Don't give up, it's important that you keep practicing at least a little bit every day while you're at the early stages of your training. If you find some of these exercises too hard, feel free to slow them down to 0.75x speed and then slowly progress. Consecutive is the hardest interpreting mode in my opinion, it takes time to develop a solid foundation to be able to do it successfully.

Hi there! You can definitely start learning and practicing on your own - that's exactly what I did back in the day, even before I decided to enter University. There's a lot of methodology, technique and principles involved in interpretation, and it's important for interpreting students to learn them. When I started on my own, these books were essential to my early learning: translationandinterpreting.com/translation-books/#Interpreting I'd say it doesn't hurt if you just jump into the exercises and give them a go, but eventually learning and practicing proper technique will become essential. When it comes to consecutive interpreting, it's perfectly normal for interpreters to do 2 to 5 minutes in one go... sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. That said, it does depend largely on the context. Sometimes, you can agree with the delegates to work in shorter chunks - especially in medical assignments, which are more 'personal' and there's a bit more flexibility. But it's always best to practice the long form and ensure you have a solid note-taking technique, because you'll definitely need it at some point.

Feel free to slow down to 0.75x speed for practice, and if it's still too fast, there are other (easier) exercises in the channel as well. There is nothing wrong with slowing down the exercises when you're at a learning stage, I used to do that when I was studying. If you're doing consecutive, remember that the point is not to 'get everything': interpreters always have to be selective when taking notes, as it's not humanly possible to note down everything a person says. The notes are meant to be just memory prompts. The key to a successful consecutive interpretation is a mix of carefully selective notes and a strong short-term memory. Keep practicing, it takes time and dedication to get there! :)

@@mjacob3663 Got it. It's perfectly normal to struggle if you're still undergoing your training, but don't let that demotivate you. Feel free to slow down to 0.75x to practice simultaneous as well, and always check the term list beforehand so you know what to expect (in real assignments, preparation is always essential, so it's okay to do it when practicing as well). Check other exercises too, different speakers have different accents, paces and styles, so it's good to get exposed to a lot of variety. It takes time, patience and a ton of practice, but you'll get there (every single interpreter had to be trained, it's not a skill that people are born with).

Hi there! If you're practicing consecutive, you shouldn't be pausing: the point is to practice note-taking and then render the speech into your target language once the video is finished. Feel free to slow down the video to 0.75x if you feel it's going too fast. In consecutive interpreting settings, it's normal for you to interpret chunks of speech lasting 2 to 5 minutes: your notes are the key here. Keep practicing, it takes quite a bit of time and dedication to get there :)

If you're on the early stages of your training, feel free to slow down the videos to 0.75x at first (it's totally fine to start like that, I used to do it myself). 🙂 Just remember that consecutive interpreting is not about taking down detailed notes - the notes are just meant to be mental prompts to help you remember what has been said.
