A customer brought by a couple of bowie knives for me to sharpen. Took care of ‘em on my Kalamazoo 1x42s. Edge leading with Red Label Abrasive belts. ⭐️🔪⭐️ #sharpeningservice #carsoncity #knifesharpening #highdesert

Great video. I'm getting into hobby sharpening and I made a lot of the same mistakes you did! I can't wait to go pro with better gear and a simpler workflow
Hello, how’s that Bucktool 1x30 working out for you? Is the low speed too low for the leather stropping wheel? I enjoyed your initial review of the sander and was curious if it’s getting a lot of use in your shop? Thanks
I use the Kalamazoo 1x42s as my primary belt sanders. The Bucktool is mainly used with the attached leather wheel. The Bucktool is nice but I like the Kalamazoos way more. They also cost way more 😂. If you want to see someone using the Bucktool primarily check out the RUclips channel of Al’s Mobile Sharpening.

Great video, you might have to change the name of your channel to “chiseled by jones” with those muscles!
Thanks! 😂 Just trying to keep this old body active.
Seems professional sharpeners accumulate sharpening systems. I didn't seen a Twice As Sharp for scissors.
I agree. We do tend to accumulate systems. I’m actually pairing down and selling my complete Tormek system. I don’t use a Twice As Sharp system because I get very good results sharpening scissors and shears on the Edge Pro systems.
Instead of repeating over and over how much you like the new system, it would have been more informational for people like me who are unfamiliar with Edge Pro, if you had shown how to sharpen a knife on this system, and discussed what makes the new system better than the previous one. For example what holds the knife stationary? Magnets?
I agree 1000%. Already have plans to make a hands on review as well in the next few weeks.
For the volume of items you plan to sharpen with your belt grinder, what do you expect your cost of belts to amount? For your Tormek, are you using the original aluminum oxide stone?
I’m actually selling the Tormek and the 2 CBN stones. I find that the Edge Pro BevelTech and Apex do most of the same stuff that the Tormek does and I like using them more.
I’ve been using ceramic belts and trizac belts and they both last a long time and the cost is pretty low.
Could you put a variable switch on your receptacle and adjust the speed on the hobo freight one. Like you would a light switch.
People have converted the harbor freight machine to using a variable speed sewing machine motor. Check out videos by Cliff Curry to find out how.
Thanks for sharing. Can you say why you have a number of sharpening systems. Do you have some for very quick sharpens and some for more precise work on more expensive knives.
Exactly. I use the belt sanders for the bulk of my sharpening work. The Tormek and Edge Pro systems have generally been for more high end work but I’m selling the Tormek because I find I prefer using the Edge Pro systems.
Thank you for this review! I was looking at this belt splitter and the Seller doesn’t provide much detailed info, pics, nor video! Does that use a single edge industrial razor blade, or a utility knife blade?
Utility blade… I think…. you know I haven’t even taken it apart to look 🤣 I’ll check today and try to remember to reply later…
Yep. Ben and Cody at Edge Pro are the most generous and wonderful people who are more concerned with ensuring you have a great sharpening experience rather than hype you full of marketing rubbish. And whether you are a newbie or a pro, there system is THE BEST.
It really is a great and versatile system.
Is that the sharpal?
It is.
Where can I get the angel adapter for belt
Curry Custom Cutlery
Great machine
I agree!
What does the angle guide look like?
Check out curry custom cutlery’s website to see the angle guide - shop.currycustomcutlery.com/products/angle-guide
GRUDGINGLY, thanks for the Beveltech envy. More seriously, I became and Edge Pro fan about five years back when I recognized those mocking individuals for not developing muscle memory were the real wannabe experts (see EndNote) in the sharpening world. More specifically, I figured out the reason it took so long to get nowhere sharpening was, just tipping your blade a degree or two could set your/my sharpening efforts. After I bought the Edge Pro, I had truly sharp knives for the first time in my life. In fact, I was talking with wifey and we commented on the problem with potatoes. Maybe they were just old and soft. Then it dawned on us, we, both, had grown up with poorly sharpened knives that, to get through a potato you had to rock you way through. THEN, after getting and using the Edge Pro, it seemed like the knives were all but falling through the potatoes. The Edge Pro is a simple to use sharpening system. It doesn't care what you throw at it. I loved the Edge Pro so much, I wanted more, and yet do. To that end, I looked at the Wicked Edge, the ONLY real competitor to the PRO. What an amazing system it is too. All you have to do to get it is, mortgage your home, at least two if not three times, and spend four times as much effort to use it, as you move through various blades. Going down the Wicked Edge road there are a many twists and turns. Too often, you need very expensive upgrades. THEN there are the complications of operating even the basic tools to sharpen an array of blades. In the end, rather than spend over a thousand dollars to enjoy the benefits of a Wicked Edge, I build my own version. it clamps the handle of the knife, rather than the blade, so I don't have to buy a clamp to use on the clamp, to avoid conflict with the stones. it does have a support post for the blade (blah, blah, blah). END NOTE: On that muscle memory crap. It works, if you use it religiously, for one, maybe two things. Of note is, not one of the promoters took me up on offers to allow them to show their expertise sharpening my: (1) Lawn mower blades (2) Axes (3) Draw knives (4) Chisels (angles all over the board, depending on the function) (5) Lathe knives (angles all over the board, depending on the function) (6) Hunting knives (7) Filet knives (8) Hand planes (9) Carving knives (angles all over the board, depending on the function) (10) Jointer and planer blades (11) Scissors (12) Machete (13) Kitchen knives (angles all over the board, depending on the function and whether JA-Pan or other (14) Pocket knives . . . .
Thanks for this. What's your preferred source for good quality belts? Looks like the 1x42 is out of stock at Kalamazoo sadly
Curry custom cutlery or red label abrasives have been working well for me
Nice, always nervous when edge leading and not on the angle guide.
You and me both!
I have owned one of these for a decade. It is a superb machine, completely trouble free despite heavy use and made in the US.
Great to hear. Glad it’s worked well for you.
I would think some businesses wouldn't want the extra administrative overhead with offering a service and sub-contracting the work out. It might be easier for those businesses to refer the sharpening work to you directly.
I think you’re right. For some business that would make sense.
Great video. I like the advice regarding equipment not mattering. The goal being to sharpen your customers knives to a high standard, in a timely fashion for a fair price. Once you've outgrown your basic 1x30 belt system, would suggest on the next level up in sharpening equipment?
Great review! I'm enjoying and learning a lot from your content while trying to up my game.
Thanks for this review. You mentioned that you have several ways to sharpen seredet knives. Can you please show us how you go about? Thanks already for your reaction. Gr. Peter Mosk from Holland
I posted a shop tour short and I hope to start posting more actual sharpening videos in the future.
Yeah looked it up it’s 80$. Great for serrations and a hawk bill knife. About the belt splitter, which one is the one to get? Different prices.
@@robertmunguia250 hello, for just the belt splitter, it’s $40. For the belt splitter and the belt bar, it’s $60 and for the ultimate which includes the splitter, belt bar and the 1/16 inch plates it’s $80. The additional plates allow you to create more custom sized belts.
new sub here really appreciate the sharpening content. Just got a TS prof but im really hesitant to use it on my Spyderco's lol!!
Thanks for the sub!
Great review of the belt splitter
Great review
Thanks!
Looks like a sweet setup! Very nice review.
Thanks!
Thank you for the great review!
My pleasure!
Handy tool design. Any plans to offer the stl/3d file for personal use? Happy to compensate for your design work
@@KennyFlagg unfortunately not at this time.
Love your videos, Warren. I'm learning and may take the step. You mentioned that you would buy an angle guide for your Bucktool 1×30 from Amazon. Do you recall what make or model angle guide you referred to?
I purchased my angle guides from Curry Custom Cutlery.
With greatest respect, I don't like any sub-contractor model especially if it is a store that doesnt even provide knife sharpening services. Imo, you would be better off with a drop off and pick up kiosk. Unfortunately with a subcontractor model, the customer is their customer. You become part of an arangement that makes you similar to an employee.
So far we’ve had a very collaborative relationship. I imagine it’s different in every situation and if it’s not working out then moving on is always a possibility.
Thank you for so much info. Trying to learn this.
I think yours is the best video I’ve seen so far. Thanks very much for all the great tips and info. You’re going to do great.
Glad it was helpful!
What’s the income like? I’ve loved sharpening and the feeling of using a sharp knife since I was a child. I have a great career but am considering sharpening as a side hustle
Hard question to answer. Some people are sharpening 5 hours a week and some people are sharpening 40 hours a week so I’m not sure what the average would be.
What exactly did you have to do to mount the angle guide on the knife makers platen? Thanks.
I’ll try to make a video showing what I did. In simplistic terms the platen was too wide so I used an angle grinder to narrow it enough so the angle guide could slide on.
@HonedByJones Thanks Warren, you're awesome.
Great video. Would you consider making a video showing us your set up and actually going thru a knife sharpening process from start to finnish? I just bought a Kalamazoo 1"x42" Variable Position Belt Grinder and the knife makers platen. (How to install and use the hardware would be great for someone just starting.) Thanks again for all you do. Cheers.
Yes I’m hoping to do that type of video soon. Although if you can’t wait go to Cliff Curry’s RUclips page or Stephen Sharpens RUclips page you’ll see almost exactly how I sharpen. I didn’t reinvent the wheel. I followed the setups and belt progressions of successful sharpeners.
Nice letter opener
Hi, here are some pointers from a guy who opened a sharpening business in 2011. ( I’d already been sharpening knives for 20 years by then.). FYI I sharpen all knives by hand on water stones. If this is the method that you like most stick to it. Eventually as your skill grows you will be the guy people want to bring their knives to because you do it by hand. Best of luck to you.
Thanks for sharing!
For that long a blade wouldn’t it be better on the harbor freight going away laying on back?
I’m not sure.
That Kalamazoo does edge leading?
Open the switch box and move two wires to reverse it. Kalamazoo customer service will explain it.
Mine does because that’s what I prefer but as the other commenter mentioned it can be changed.
I appreciate you sharing. I'd like to offer sharpening services to people in my neighborhood.
Go for it!
Great info! I follow a couple of those guys. I’m definitely going to try out that buck belt grinder. I need something to get all the chips out of a blade quickly and do finish sharpening on the Tormek.
You popped up on my feed. Nice review. Retired guy and been watching Cliff Curry. I as many others who wanted to get into sharpening to sharpen tools, kitchen knives or just general sharpening have purchased the Rikon 50-161VS. After seeing this video I have to say all your points are spot on. Thank You for an excellent post. Good luck and prosper with your new found business.. This machine is a cool piece of equipment for any small shop. Thank You
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the review.
Lots of good tips. Im a novice, trying to figure out how to sharpen my own knives for just my use. Would've made a lot more sense to just use a local sharpener. Lol.
So ironic! I just collaborated with a culinary store to do their sharpening for them as well. Great idea, especially for people who haven’t gotten their name out there quite yet.
Awesome
So sharp
Thanks for thoughtful ideas. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
That bad boy is sharp!
And Sharp it is!
Sounds like the key is alot of restaurant contracts
Most of my customers are not restaurants so far. Mostly just people who want their knives sharpened. I do sharpen for a couple of restaurants too.
Honed by jones sounds like a porn channel / name
