Regardin the timeline: Marley started their attack on Paradise 9 years ago (when Bertholdt and Reiner broke the walls). Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie then stayed on paradise for 5 years. So the season 3 fight against Bertholdt, Reiner and Zeke (the Beast titan) happened 4 years ago.

When you first watch the fourth season, it's really hard to understand what's going on. I also thought that there were flashbacks and Falco is Rainer, that the little candidates are Rainer's team in the past.

Yes Erwin was a great commander, but the scouts were just going outside and dying with no real progress before titan Eren. And they wouldn't have Titan Eren without Armin being the one to have the idea to use him (from ep 1x7). Almost every step forward has been because of Armin's big brain but people on the outside looking in (like Flock) give all the credit to Erwin because he is the face of the Scouts.
