This channel will focus on the progress of my 2-rail O scale layout, tours of friend's layouts, modeling tips, and occasional railfanning videos.
Revisiting David Vaughn's 2-Rail O Scale Nickel Plate Layout
Another visit to my friend David Vaughn's incredible 2-rail O scale Nickel Plate Layout. David models the NKP at the end of steam operations in May of 1958. David's layout features sections of the former layouts of John Armstrong (the "dean of track planning"), Ed Rappe, and Ted Stepik. We ran multiple trains, operated by David, myself, and my son.
I apologize for the occasional shaky video. I was running the train and filming at the same time.

A REAL WORKHORSE OF A STEAMER!! ⭐⭐💯🇺🇸👍👍😁😁 VERY NICE!!👍👍👍👍
@@kyleking284 Thank you! I’ve always been a big fan of the N&W smaller steam locomotives.
Train greatness on Ryans Express Trains !!
@@alpugliesetrains9753 Thanks Al!
So much more realistic than that 3rd rail stuff.
@@zaraNFC It’s a great scale to model in. One of my goals in starting a RUclips channel was promoting model railroading in general but particularly highlighting 2-rail O. Personally, I converted from HO to O (2-rail) several years back and it was the best decision I made modeling-wise.
beautiful layout
Yes it is. It's especially neat that David has been able to preserve the layouts of several well known modelers and incorporate them into his.
Another great video!
Thank you, Al! Always enjoy your videos as well!
Sweet video! I haven't seen you in ages!
Thanks! I've been incredibly busy the last six months or so, but should be back to semi-regular videos.
I like the video, but could have done without the goofy music. Just saying. ✌
Thanks Ryan ! And folks Ryan has a great channel so dont forget to watch and like all his videos!
Thanks Al! Appreciate the kind words and the support! I'll have some new videos coming out soon.
When i was a kid , my Grandmother had a coffee table book of beautiful long freight trains of the W M. All steam. I used to marvel at those engines. But no matter how this guy tries to sell us on the wonders of Western Maryland, it would all be gone in a decade. Now a few scraps behind a fence. They call it a museum. Hmmm 😢.
Really awesome and inspiring! Just love the O Scale 2 rail modeling format- want to get into it in a big way! Thank you for posting!
Thank you! I thoroughly enjoy modeling in O scale 2 rail and love sharing other's 2-rail layouts as well.
When your eyes are going "bifocular". 😂
@@Mojoman57 That line gets me too…. 😂🤣
Do you have any footage of Sabillasville area??
I don’t think so.
Hurray!🎉🎉Finally, a great historic film to video of the Western Maryland Railroad!🎉🎉Love it!❤
Does anyone know where that curve was located? I'm having trouble finding it on maps.
And all that is c.s.x now and how much is left of it 2day in 2024
CSX , got controlling interest in the Western Maryland just to eliminate the competition!!!
BEAUTIFUL MODELLING ❤
@@wallsknob Thank you so much!
Less than 30 years after this film was made it was all gone. Unbelievable. My grandfather was the yardmaster on the "Willy Murphy" in Cumberland throughout WW-II, retired in 1959 but lived to see it all disappear. The stories he told about his war time service, whew. He said they could get a couple trains in from the east, break them up and put together a train headed to Baltimore and have it out of the yard on its way east in 15 minutes. No computers, no automation, no nothing, just people dedicated to doing their jobs as well as possible. 14 hours a day, 7 days a week during the war years took a toll on his health. But his story was like so many others from that time, such as the incredible statistics like the Ford Rouge plant producing a new B-25 bomber at peak of production every _ten minutes_. What we have lost...
Those old school people is who I learned my work ethics from this new generation is mostly loss anymore
The Greatest Generation, They got it done, no matter how difficult, and not complaining about it. Thankfully I was born in an era, 1962, when hard work and responsibilities were still practiced, instilled into me by my Parents and people like your Grandfather, they are the people I most appreciate, all hard working Americans, proud of their Country, pride in their jobs. Completely opposite of the self centered, lazy, welfare recipients of today!
The WM is my favorite railroad. I lived near Walbrook Jct. on the WM in the early/mid 1950s as a young child and rode railfan excursions on the line in the 1960s and '70s to Hagerstown, Cumberland, and Elkins.
You even put the correct whistle on it! Looks great!
@@UmoadoGaming Thanks! Yep, TCS made it easy as it has the I2’s sound set on their decoders!
@@ryanexpresstrains8074 I like using some of the WM whistles as well. I use the V4.6 version on my HO scale locomotive CRI&P 2319
WOW, THE WILD MARY'S STEAM POWER ON DISPLAY! THANK YOU!!!
Yes!! In all of its glory!
Congrats to that man. Now we're talking steel industry in HO. The mix of kits and scratch is impressive. No doubt it would be a dream doing ops on that layout. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video.
Thanks so much!
What scale?
God... I envy the people who got to see this stuff back in the day. Such beautiful machines, and cant forget the iconic hooter whistles...
I'm also surprised at how clean that whistle is. Most whistles I hear on models are muffled to some degree.
@@orbitsrailfanvids O scale allows you to get really good, clear sound, especially with large heavy bass speakers.
It's super refreshing to see 2 rail o scale!!! What is the selection of models like compared to 3 rail? I'm sure its less, but is it hard to find what you need?
Honestly there's a very good selection. Unfortunately only some hobby shop's carry 2 rail O, so you have to look elsewhere like eBay, train shows, etc. But I have never had an issue finding equipment. If you can think of it, it probably exists in 2 rail O.
Nice to see so much Mid Atlantic equipment, especially the B&O.
My layout is all Western Maryland, B&O, and N&W. It's proto-freelanced, but "exists" just outside of Hagerstown, MD, where all three of those roads interchanged.
I 3d printed a low detail wm challnger
I wish I could buy one scale 2 rail but I don’t have money or that stuff I want more western Maryland equipment I love the wm because I live in a town which was the main town of operations for the wm haggerstown Maryland
There's plenty of 2-rail O WM equipment available, many times at very reasonable prices. On a whole, I have found 2-rail O to be cheaper than current HO scale prices.

LIRR 39's whistle
I grew up in Skaneatles, NY and my father was very much into model trains. We had a collection of French rail cars, and many of his scenes were European villages in the Alps using paper mache for landscapes and home-made cardboard buildings. I wish I had known Brian was so interested in this passion; my father would have loved to see what Brian has created! I would love to hear from Brian if he feels so inclined.
Beautiful layout--thanks so much for the tour. What track and turnouts are you using? Looking forward to your next progress report.
Thank you so much! The track is a mix of MicroEngineering and Atlas flex. The turnouts are a combination of Atlas, O Scale Turnouts, and Signature Switch Company. All code 148.
Wondeful train ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for posting, we are traveling from Harrisburg PA to Harper’s Ferry - was looking for good train store to visit along the way. Place looks awesome, lots of “O” gauge
Definitely worth visiting! It’s one of the best hobby shops on the East coast!
This is amazing. Detailed to the max. You get the trophy. Love to see this in person.

is 1:48 two rail track not compatible with Peco O scale track?
I believe it is. Peco O scale track is 2 rail track.
Nice video Dave, thanks for sharing, HO is my favorite, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Nice job Ryan! I didn't realize this was your work when I seen it a while back.
Thanks Dave! Yeah, it was a fun project.
Beautiful work 👏💪🦫🤘🇺🇸🎁💰🤞🚂👍🔥🎉🍩🖖👌😎🎄
Thanks for the tour of your beautiful layout! Great to see your kids involved with it too!
Thank you so much!
I would love to know the grade and number of coals and tonnage. Like some have said the low end power these things had was impressive. Really missed out, and now with the future of 611 dark with the FRA inspection in February who knows what will happen.
Need more sand. ;)
What is your grade when you go from one level to the next?
This is an action packed well done layout! Is there a track plan available for this layout? Thanks!
Absolutly beautiful layout
Great Looking C&O 2-Rail Layout 😊
