Why Are Ships So Cookiecutter Now?

Look at them all! They all look the same!? Why? After the Paul R. Tregurtha the Great Lakes wouldn’t see many new ships other than the Barge Great Lakes Trader and tug Joyce L. VanEnkevort. This rock saved the U.S. and I'm going to tell you what it is, its history and how it did. After WW2 the once plentiful iron ore was depleted. The material necessary for steel production was almost gone, and in the soon coming years steel mills in the US couldn’t make anymore cars, buildings, planes, etc. So what was next? #greatlakes #ironore #ship #maritime Sources: www.dnr.state.mn.us/educat...

How This Ship Can Unload Itself History
My husband lost relatives in this tragedy 😢 I pray this crew rests in peace
The Canadian specific?
Rusty old tub with keel separated, made of scrap steel. Twisted like a pretzel, bow stuck in the mud, throttle full torque twisted the middle third Into confetti
A foolish proud captain
F i t z c a r a l d o was toast all of 1975
I've been on the ship
Wow, TIL something. Great job!
Y'know, After seeing the body discovered on the Fitz I am terrified of all wreck photos even from ships where bodies aren't there like the Titanic those at then end we're just... I can't I can't imagine what the divers thought
Hey Kid… u still around? Was this a school project or a real interest on this Magnificat boat. There’s still a lot of questions to be answered. Hope ur project worked out well.
I love this bulk carrier 💙💙💙
It was especially good to hear that the Crew escaped without incident! Far too many Great Lake vessels have killed their Crews! The most important thing is Crew safety, everything else is a matter for loss adjusters, lawyers and Courts to determine.
54806 dood ....To bad shes gone .
People are concerned, not because they don’t inspect or have rules & regs in place, but because ships often get to defer maintenance & in the past problems were glossed over, overlooked etc. Leading to the loss of lives. We have to be able to trust those in authority to do the right thing. Right. People on land at the top doin a cost/benefit analysis weighing risk to life against profits. And the rules are truly written in blood.
GET RID OF it...before it becomes a liability..like fitzgerald
The ship at 0:53 is the Stewart J. Cort, one of the thousand footers on the lakes.
I drove by the ship docked last week, the bones are showing in a major way on the ships sides.
is Arthur M Anderson another sister ship with Edmund Fitzgerld??
Thank you for this, everybody always quotes the Anderson as being the sister ship but it's not. My dad worked on the Colby??? summer of 57 and used to think it was a sister to the Fitz but all freighters from that era look alike, but not neccesarily sisters.
Many great lakes disasters were unscheduled "final" runs. Overloaded, bad weather runs demanded by the corporate masters. Money, money, money.
It was the “Fitzgerald” not the “Fixgerald”
!,
That was cool there fleetmate John J Boland well we don’t want it scrapped I’m gonna crying 😢
I was on the MV Algoway that night , I had just turned 16 yrs old 12 days before. I was porter on that ship on November 10 1975. I could not go up forward because the ship was bending and waves crashing on the deck.
Pure, 100%, 6th-grade garbage.
Blows me away how old some of the ships are on the Lakes
The one photo is the Cort
They all look (mostly) the same because they are built for function at reasonable cost using the available technology ot their time. Just as the 60 and 70 year old ships were built with the same objectives... and they all looked the same as other ships of the same vintage. The opinion that they were so much more pleasing to the eye is highty subjective. Ships have always been built to maximize cost effectiveness, and odds are they always will be.
I don’t understand this video. I heard on the news the inspection found the ship too damaged to repair and was to be scrapped. Also the crew had been laid off already. Why are we still talking about this?
The Michipicoten has not been scrapped as of the middle of August. As a matter of fact, she was just moved to layup berth by the tugs Missouri and Kentucky on August 16, 2024.
iron coffin!!
It's Mih-shippa-COAT-en and Al-GOH-ma
does anyone know were the love of god goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours
It’s bad luck to change the name of a boat.
Every time I see a Great Lakes ore hauler, all I hear is: 🎵 "The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee, Superior they said, never gives up her dead When the gales of November come early..." 🎶
Nice one! Do you know where the picture at 2:48 was taken? There is a building similar to the one in the picture in Cleveland,OH.
I have dove the DR Hanna twice. 140 to the mud and the engine room access door is the only to get inside of her. Lot of the rooms are a mess but the boilers and engine are still in place, but it is a difficult penetration dive.
She failed her inspection and going for scrap!
Also, ashland has a total of 5 ore docks. C&NW Docks 1-3, Wisconsin Central and Soo line
Nice to see you used some of my photos but no credits
Very old Lakers in action now...
The Fitzgerald hit six fathoms shoal, reported leaks and pumps on and sank because it bottomed out. Other ships like the Daniel J Morrell, Edward Townsend and the Carl D Bradley were made from steel before 1948 which was known as “brittle steel“. Finally we are talking freshwater ships which have a much much longer lifetime than saltwater ships. If she is repairable she should have many more years of good service
@maggiespeaks8555 thought so. You're DEFINITELY a company hack (either Rand or similar POS company). LCA (association of ship owners) blamed the loss of the Fitzgerald on the crew running aground. EVERY company that has ever lost a ship blamed the crew, regardless of ANY evidence. Same here. There is no evidence whatsoever that the Fitzgerald stuck the bottom. It was simply a ploy by the company to absolve themselves of any responsibility for the deaths of the crew. The tactic of blaming the crew has been used forever.
LLT's somehow mad that the coast guard is refusing to allow another Fitz to happen. To quote a gaming journalist that I admire greatly: "Let's all laugh at an industry that never learns anything teeheehee"
WTF are you teehee ing at when human lives are involved? Sick POS.
Same old story. Company doesn’t care about safety. They never have and never will. This is why we have inspections and regulations. The workers don’t have a chance without these.
$$$$$ don't care for ewe
If the USCG had had the nerve to do this to the Fitz there wouldn’t have been 29 casualties but they allowed a derelict ship to sail in the worst month on the lakes.
YEA
Ok Ricky Redneck. Connor is NOT a valid source of information.
I’m crossing my fingers that she will sail again ❤
It's no wonder why LLT/Rand Logistics has had a slough of accidents with their vessels because of the poor maintenence. Look at HALCO and their spotty history, if Rand continues like this, they might risk loosing contracts and potential lawsuits.
Nothing ever changes, these companies run their ships into the ground with no consideration for the safety of the crew and when it comes time to repair their ships they want the cheapest and quickest fix possible to get the ship out of dock and earning them money as quickly and cheaply as possible.
Thanks for the update!!
Old and neglected death trap. Algoma keeps the ship breakers busy as their ships look like salt water ships and rusty and neglected ! But could it be Algoma is running out of ships ? How is it that the Canadian Coast Guard isn't inspecting these ships every 5 years ?
i want to know Why the Us Coast Guard has not pull its sailing Papers. The Us Coast guard had no Problem with Pulling the Edward Townsend sailing papers in 1966 for close to the same damage
@@dknowles60and it's have not pulled. Not have not pull.
@@alexandersinclair9006 that is wimpy Canada that wount take away the Sailing Papers the good news is the ship is in the Us and the Us coast guard has the finial say
all of their vessels should be pulled in for inspection imo
