This eBay Buyer Thought I Was a Rental Service!
Join with me as we discuss the difficulties we face as eBay resellers when dealing with unfair policies regarding returns. Too many times, buyers take advantage of eBay's loose system of returns to scam sellers though practices such as "temporary rental of inventory" and bait and switch tactics, swapping broken or defected goods for those that were ordered. Is it time for eBay to make wholesale changes to these very policies to give sellers more autonomy prevent the abuse of the return system? What changes do you think would be in the best interest of sellers, while also being fair to buyers on the platform?

Cost of Goods: 5 Profit Building Tips for eBay!!
One thing I refuse to sell is Halloween costumes just for the possibility of a rental. I'm pretty sure I've not had to experience a rental return situation. Great subject and vid! 🤠
Returns suck but it is part of the business. And returns are the reason I almost never offer free shipping. But then again if they are using INAD as a return reason that doesn’t help either.
I didn’t know you had a rental service. I’ll check your store out right now!
I've been getting returns back where they say the item was not correct or it was damaged. But when I sent it out, it was perfectly good. My husband says they are probably buying products to replace what they already have and sending their broken or damaged items back saying they are ours just to get their money back. He says that scam has been around forever.
The switch out is certainly something that can happen. Some sellers use a small mark on their item for identification in case of a return. Not sure how that works when trying to process a case with eBay but it sounds interesting. It stinks that any of us have to deal with dishonesty, but unfortunately it seems to be a part of the process. Thanks for watching!!
Great show and subject! It definitely happens this way or seems to. I guess we never truly know which is why it’s best not to get torn up over the possible rental purchases! I actually didn’t get any costume returns this year thankfully
Thanks buddy and agreed!! I honestly don’t get too worked up over returns for the most part, just feel like it’s an area that eBay could use some policy refinement. Returns are the cost of doing business as a seller!! Y’all take care brother!
Justin and that mask! I think he sold that during his week of accepting all offers too! People are so entitled sometimes. I got two returns in one week, because they didn't read the measurements. I am now including them in pictures rather than the description. I also don't do free returns. On a $10 item, even when I resell, it breaks me even, and that can be discouraging.
It is definitely discouraging when that happens, especially with the added return shipping costs. I also transitioned from putting measurements in the description to taking measurement photos. I think it helps as most people seem to be more visual anyway! Thanks for watching!!
Love the thumbnail. I had a Wii sports rental lately. That’s why I don’t do free returns
Thanks brother!! I’ve actually thought about doing no free returns but I feel like free returns gives a good enough sales boost to offset the cost of the returns.
Check the serial number for a swap and also check if they did not open it and remove some parts. I do seller protection is getting better I don't think that's a feasible request since it would cost them a lot more money with how many scams there is they will not do that.
Good point!
Check the serial number for a swap and also check if they did not open it and remove some parts
Great advice! I’ve even heard of some resellers putting an intentional mark on such items to prevent swap outs from happening. Thanks for watching!!
Sound fishy to me. No one waits that long to test an electronic. Secondly, in the message, they were laying it on a little too thick. If I got an electronic that was poorly packaged, testing would have been the first priority. Could be run of the meal buyers remorse, but my guess is the dropshipper got a return request. Sorry that happened. Hopefully, it's working upon return so you can resell it. Generally, I don't get to bothered by dropshippers because you usually never hear from them again, but in this case, I would block.
I couldn’t agree more!! The whole situation just felt a little off from the start. But of course, returns are just part of the business, though I do think I’m going to block them if the unit still works properly!! Thanks for watching my friend!!
Do you prefer to use auction or buy-it-now listings for selling lots/bundles?
@@CrowdPleeza I pretty much stick with buy it now 99% of the time. Thanks for watching!
You may want to start pricing with Discogs and not Ebay you are a little high on some of these prices looking at the covers some that you think are original pressings are not I am not a expert by any means but especially with the Beatles records I believe you are very high on however if you can get these prices more power to you my friend BTW the Introducing The Beatles is the most bootlegged album of it's time and you will need to make sure they are not boots
Your becoming the go to guy for music and media! I know ive been blown away with ever thing youve bought. 😊
What the heck man! Your subs are going up fast! 😊 Im loving watching your growth! 😊
You have to know music a bit better, not easy being a younger fella 😉. That was a bit patronising, you backed your instincts, love that man...But it makes a huge difference to how you look at collections, read up on music. For instance Vanilla Fudge are pretty famous, but not uncommon. Love are amazing, they did several hugely respected albums. Captain Beyond are great hard rock...Beatles records are so common, I don't get too excited unless it's a rare one... No one really buys Count Basie, sorry Mr Basie😊... But, I kept seeing good records, nothing exceptional (you also never know if someone or many others have been their before you)... It's frustrating you didn't pull any records out of their sleeves, just spot check condition. I've been dealing in vinyl a long time, I find this sixties and seventies stuff harder to sell and less interesting. I'd buy more genre collections like heavy metal or indie rock these days. Anyway I think it was a good buy dude. In England I spend about £2k a month on people's collections. This Saturday some guy brought in a set of Oasis 12"EPs in that cost me £200 and a bunch of noise LP's I paid about the same for. It's an education for me too.
Good God, man, get to the point.
I may be wrong but I don't think that Wall is a first press with a barcode on it.
Nice find. What amazes me is that collections like this still exist.
Excellent video, still learning what to look for. Many of these I haven’t seen before
Neil diamond jazz singer is mofi …check it again
I’ve had the chirping crickets many times…which pressing is it and what is the grade on the vinyl?
It’s the Label 55 Pickneyville, IL pressing. I would say it’s good to very good. Some crackling when played without cleaning and noticeable surface marks. Label is really nice.
It's all about condition. If you're selling a record for more than $50 that has only been graded visually, the buyer is taking a risk on whether it will play well and will not pay top dollar. A buyer can clean a record once they get it, but they can't fix groove wear or play surface damage that may not be visible.
The ring wear in the white albums can sometimes be dry cleaned. We offer that service but if you want to try it yourself and try putting the time into it, a white erasure should clean them up pretty good.
Those cheap ones if you’re not careful will damage your records due to lack of water temperature regulation. One alternative is our ultrasonic cleaning subscriptions. We use a fleet of Degritters and you get fresh sleeves and IS stickers saying that they were cleaned. DM us if you would like more info.
Dang, Had enough for a part 2! I'm trying to catch up on everyone's vids. Been inundated with family over every single day for weeks. Can't catch a break to do anything. Great job Josh!
If you think you’ll have access to record collections long term, it may be a good idea to invest in a cleaner. In my experience the manual machines are not a good purchase. You may also find a local music store or to see if they resurface - some place like McKays or Great Escape. Most city’s have a used record shop and give you a bulk deal to resurface.
Another thought you could get the nice machine and then make money charging to resurface for others. Sellers on eBay do it or could set up in your flea booth once a week/month.
Hey Andrew! Thanks for the info. I did a quick check and didn’t find any local places advertising cleaning online, but I may have to call around to see. I might just go ahead and get the entry level ultrasonic cleaner. It’s still less than $200 and I definitely see myself targeting more vinyl in the future. Thanks for watching buddy!
That’s a good idea too that might be worth looking into. Good way to offset the machine cost anyway.
Hiya just found your channel, I would definitely get a cleaning man for the records, I'm in the UK so some of those records will be rare here, great video and finds, I have subscribed to your channel, keep up the good work, cheers, Dave
Thanks so much for watching! So do you have experience with the manual cleaners like the Spin-clean? Is the Vevor ultrasonic worth the extra $100?
I didn’t get bubble mailers. I only have the poly mailers so I’ll do the cardboard and bubble wrap around the cd. That should be enough right. Also, how much does it cost to ship that bundle of cds in the 6x6 box?
@@ThrifterPicker yep. I’ve done the same thing before myself.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Hi Josh. I wish I could help. I cherry-pick records & obviously pick ones in visibly good condition. I don't attempt to grade & say so in my description. I pretty much put everything at Good condition. I will describe the cover & inlay condition and say if the record has scratches. If there are scratches, I listen to it & will only say it plays without skipping. The only cleaning I've done is a damp cloth to get off the dust 😊. I was hesitant to sell records initially because I had very little knowledge. But after many vinyl sells, at this point, I just go for it. I thankfully never had any pushback or a bad experience. I think, in essence, it's because I under promise and over deliver. Don't get analysis😊 paralysis. Get them listed.
Thanks so much for the feedback Miss Lashay!! You are so right about falling victim to analysis paralysis!! lol!! Unfortunately, I am the prototypical overly analytical personality in case you haven’t noticed. And I do think that under promise and over deliver is a good rule of thumb for reselling in across the board. Other reseller friends have offered the same advice due to the grading gray areas with those who collect vintage vinyl. Really appreciate you watching and hope you have an amazing 4th quarter!! 😊
I can’t get any hits on my cds at all. Like they aren’t being seen at all. Even though I see some in the Solds
@@ThrifterPicker They can be really slow movers sometimes if the sell through rate is slow. I have some that have been listed for months without much action. I would give it some time but you may also have to look at different ways to create lots/bundles, check titles and item specifics of other similar listings for searchable keywords you can add, use promotions if the market is flooded, and double check to be sure that your prices are in line with both the sold comps and current listings available.
Hi from the UK Great video & advice, we started in June this year, looking forward to next year.
Awesome!! Thanks for watching good luck moving forward in this reselling adventure!! It’s a blast for me!
Great advice. The more movement the better in Q4. Anything to keep your algorithm spinning!
Absolutely!! I try to be active periodically all throughout the day.
Hope there is some zappa in that pile.
Just one if I remember right. Thanks for watching!
Great video god bless! New sub!
Appreciate that brother! Welcome to the channel and God bless!
Your promotional albums are only worth higher prices if the record label says promotional. If not it's just a sticker on the cover.
You are absolutely right. So far, they have all checked out. Thanks for watching!!
Double check to make sure stuff even is listed. I found 2 pairs of shorts in my shorts bin that wasn't listed. Take care buddy
Yeah I’ve heard others talk about that happening to them. So far so good here, but I’ll probably find something missing before I’m done. Thanks for watching brother!! Hope all is well!
Great content ! You ended paying way to much for this collection. 2 pieces of advice from a seasoned seller. Use the goldmine standard... it's the bible for record grading. I would never use mint or near mint it maks you sound inexperienced. You need to know about discogs. You need to also need to use a resource called popsike. Terapeake really does not work as well as popsike . Hope this helps. A rule of thumb is to spend 1 dollar to 5 dollars each if you buy a whole collection
I appreciate your perspective and advice. I will definitely look into those resources and grading standards. I am a greenhorn on records but I hope to get my education going through this collection. Do you think an entry level ultrasonic cleaner is a good investment? Thanks for watching!!
The most importent thing ,what condition is the vinyl in ?
So far, most of it appears to be in very good to excellent condition. Thanks for watching!!
Working on something like this and hoping to report some info on it
Awesome!! Let me know how it goes! Good luck!!
Thanks for the video always love to see the sales and find the words of wisdom useful.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found the video helpful and I hope your sales continue to go up.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
You too my friend! 🙏🏻
When I’m doing a search on the eBay app, I can’t find an option for scanning bar code. It’s only an option to take a photo. The bar code option doesn’t come up until I’m listing. Am I doing something wrong?
That’s odd, I’m not sure. Any time I use the app and go to the search icon for research on my phone and the camera opens, I have a toggle option at the bottom of the screen with both image and barcode listed. I can choose between either when doing research or listing. You might be over looking it, but if not, you might check your app settings and see if it’s an option there to change the setup.
I bought like 1200 cds for $200 and kind of instantly regretting it. Seems like it’s taking forever just to clean a handful without even listing them yet. I know most cds don’t bring much profit at all. Is it worth it? Any advice?
I would think at $200 that you would be able to make good profit. Cleaning is definitely not the most fun part but it has got a little faster for me the more I’ve done it. And often I find they don’t need much but a quick wipe. I keep disinfectant wipes and a bottle of windex spray handy with a couple microfiber cloths. I would suggest cleaning, comping, and sorting by artist/genre all at once if possible. Many of them will need to be lotted up in order to sell them more quickly. I would individually list only those with good sell through rates and values of $8-10 or more. Since you are only into them for less than $0.20 each, I would think you could do well. I just sold a mixed rock lot of 16 for $25 yesterday that I had $2.50 into. You could easily list lots of 10 for $19.99 and only have less than $2 of cost involved which should give you close to $15 profit per sale after fees and COG with buyer pay shipping. With 1200 CDs you could potentially repeat that 120X if all sell. That would be $1800 profit which I think is pretty ROI. But of course some may not sell, but even if you only sold half at that price point, you do 4X your investment. And that’s assuming you find no gems in the process. So, I guess it partly depends on how you look at things when determining if it’s worth the time to you, but I enjoy working with music so it doesn’t bother me as long as they are in pretty good overall condition and the potential profit margin is really good. Hope this helps!!
@@BamaJaybirdResell thank you so much! A lot of them have cracked cases that will have to be replaced and some just have small cracks on the front. Is it ok to sell the ones with small cracks?
@ I sell them all the time. I just make a note of it in the description or under the condition and show it in pictures. If it’s terrible I will try to change it or if it is a really valuable cd and everything else is super nice, then I will change it I think it will increase the selling price enough.
I try to avoid mainstream and buy weird stuff. :P
That’s always a good plan! The ones I’ve never heard of are often the most valuable. Thanks for watching!!
@@BamaJaybirdResell My favorite so far was a German print of a Frank Stallone CD. I saw it at the bins and just bought it because it was hilarious that Frank Stallone put out a CD. Turned out to be worth $65! :P
@ 😂😂 He’s not too bad actually! There’s actually a guitar shop with a RUclips out in California that Frank goes into pretty regular. They have a lot of famous musicians come in.
@@BamaJaybirdResell Cool. I live in a super small town. Nobody even breaks down here. :P I recently bought a collection of 1200 CDs at a yard sale. The woman's step mother had passed and the step moms CD collection was extremely similar to mine. Some goobs picked over it and took all the popular stuff. I just wanted the unusual stuff anyway. :P
@@ljwhitmire200 super rural here too, but it has its advantages too. Much less competition.
Thank you for sharing. Prayers you have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
H
Thanks for watching and for the prayers! I hope you have a blessed day as well!
Not possible for an item to have a STR above 100%! That violates basic elementary school age math. 100% STR = All sold 0% STR = None Sold You can't sell more than existed. A 150% STR is like saying you had 100 widgets but sold 150 widgets. So how did you sell 150 widgets when only 100 ever existed? You arriving at 150% because you are not using the correct formula and you are not accounting for items that were listed but did not sell. STR is computed using the following formula. Items Sold / (Items Sold + Items Still Listed + Unsold Expired Listings) You are also not allowed to cut Priority Mail boxes in half and use them as storage trays. That is postal revenue fraud.
@@consignmentwares1433 Not aware I was doing anything wrong using the boxes like that but it does make sense. These were left over shoe boxes that no longer were cheaper for me to use after the ground advantage rate change. Nevertheless, note taken and will definitely change practice going forward. As far as my sell through rate calculations are concerned, it is admittedly a liberally adapted interpretation of the concept. The figure that I use reflects the percent of an items current listings likely to sell within the 90 day period as accounted for by the sold listings and intended to illustrate when the market supply is unable to match the market demand for certain products. That’s why it is sometimes referenced as having a STR over 100%. It is also understood that the total supply of a particular item for sell over the same 90 day period will exceed the current number listed on any one day as new listings are always going up. The intent is merely to easily identify which items sold on eBay have a demand higher than the current available supply and which ones don’t so only the best items can be targeted. And if the current listed supply is 3X the number sold over the last 90 days, it stands to reason that without adding any new listed items, it would take approximately 270 days for all the current listings to sell. This would be reflected as 33% of the current supply selling every 90 days and provide strong support for not adding such items to ones inventory. Maybe there exists a better term to use for this measurement, but STR, though erroneously applied, is the term most commonly used in the online reselling community and I think most people know what is meant when it is used in this way. I’m no expert economist nor do I claim that title. And as a social science teacher I do agree that in regards to pure economic terms, we are not accurately representing the concept when using it in this manner. But then again, I don’t think most viewers of reselling content, myself included, are looking to hear a detailed lecture on economics when they tune in to a reselling channel. Lol!! I’m looking for the simplest actionable information available that is easy to master and apply. 😉 Thanks so much for the quality input and for taking time to watch. I think you may have inspired the teacher in me to provide some clarification on this subject in an upcoming video. 😁 Have a great day!!
Great show and advice as always!
Thanks my friend! I hope the tips are helpful!
Thank you ! Just starting.
Good luck with your sales, I hope this video helps. Thanks for watching!!
Solid advice👍. I started out picking items I thought were good & boy, did I end up with a bunch of stuff. Thankfully, it was media purchased very cheaply & I quickly learned to make lots😊. Now I check STR for everything unless I've sold it before. Additionally, since I have some experience & knowledge under my belt, I can take some chances on things with slower STR. Sold a book today for over $35 with no sales history one eBay in the last 3 years, but I knew b/c of the subject matter & the limited copies out there, it would sell eventually.
Always love reading your comments!! I did the same thing, especially starting out. But you’re right, I think good picking is a combination of the science of STR and the art of a good eye! Have a fantastic and blessed week friend!! 😊
