    I wired a winch up with this system and it worked perfect. I then ordered two more relays and wired my snowblower (attachment for garden tractor) chute up the same way. When I energized the coil, it blew fuse after fuse. After trouble shooting, I found that pins 87a and 87 were connected! Am I correct in understanding that these two pins should never be connected? I put some old 5 pin relays in and wholla! it all worked as it should- weird. Thank You for posting though- it really helped!

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines 20 дней назад

      Your correct 87a and 87 should never be connected unless you messed up wiring elsewhere. The connection should always be between 30 & 87 or 30 & 87a. The relay switches pin 30 between 87 or 87a. The relay is just a switch that is toggled when the magnet inside is energized.

    So I understand this was a long time ago and no longer have the bike. I recently bought a 950 Adventure and I am 95% sure the last owner did not correctly do a valve adjustment. The bike runs and idles well, but in the mid range it sounds and feels like it’s un balanced. In this video you did mention that after finding TDC on the rear cylinder that when you move on to do the front cylinder that TDC is not in the same crank position and you need to use the 14mm Allen socket again to turn the crank to find TDC for the front. Here is my question: TDC in the front is not the next revolution, but the second revolution where the front piston is at the top. Am I correct? I strongly suspect that whoever did the last valve adjustment on the 950 I bought set the front cylinder timing to the first cycle and not the second so it runs, but not well. Please tell me if I am making sense. I am going to do a valve check/adjustment and after I do the rear and get to the front cylinder I think I will find that the dots you mentioned on the gears will line up and show TDC on the very cycle of the piston and not the second.

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines Месяц назад

      If you suspect the timing is off go through and recheck it again and make sure all of the marks line up. Then rotate it a few times and make sure the marks still line up again. There isn't any first or second cycle as you are suggesting. The other thing to check is that the cam chain tensioner is tensioned and that the marks still line up. Just a reminder the video and cam positions are to show you have to do a valve adjustment. But you you can also use it to find TDC and set the cam timing as well. It just doesn't have a tone of step by step details on that.

    • @trailrunnermike
      @trailrunnermike Месяц назад

      @ Now I’m more confused. I watched Ken Nelson from Adventure Machines video on RUclips titled “Adventure Machines KTM LC8 valve check” (20,000+ views) that specifically references near the end @ of the video at about 10:24 that the second time the front piston is at the top is when the circle marks on the front gears on the cams should align with the top of the cylinder head. He also states that if you adjust the valves at the first cycle up that you end up with a “twingle” where it will run exactly how this bike is running.

    I just tried this with my garden tractor and winch. The relays are clicking but no winch activity? Where does the winch get ground? If you follow the path, current goes through one relay, through the winch and to pin 87 on the other relay? How does it get ground? When I hook a battery starter up to the lugs on the winch, it turns fine?

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines Месяц назад

      You need to rewatch the video. PIN 30 from both relays goes to the winch. You get ground and + power from the through the relays. As the relays switch PIN 30 alternates on each relay between positive and ground / Negative. Around 6 minutes I draw a diagram showing how it needs to be wired.

    • @chetspencer3241
      @chetspencer3241 Месяц назад

      @@hotrod-machines I figured it out but if coil pins 85 and 86 are going to be grounded, don't they have to be jumped to 85a for a return ground path?

    • @hotrod-machines
      @hotrod-machines Месяц назад

      @@chetspencer3241 No you don't jumper to 85a, you are using the switch, or joystick to select whether you send ground / Neg. power to either 85 one the one solenoid or 86 on the other solenoid. Grounding both of these pins at the same time would make both of them close creating a short. Its one pin grounded at a time.

      The solenoid coil turned out to be encapsulated and thus unserviceable --> i.imgur.com/A5eYi4c.jpg Fortunately, I found a compatible compressor in working condition at my local U-pull. The A.L.C. is back in business! :D

      Clean the rubber really well, and let it dry afterward. Also scuff it up a bit with a wire brush or sandpaper. Then start applying. A few thin coats is better than one heavy coat.

    Thank you for this video. I already bought a replacement air compressor, but I want to see if I can take the old one apart and get it going again. I was afraid of taking it apart improperly and destroying it.

      You got this! Its just a bunch of simple pieces all packaged together. The worst part is the wiring inside the solenoid, if you take that apart the wires are about the thickness of a human hair.

    0:41 "which is kind of special order" NO. No it is not. Using two single pole double throw relays to reverse polarity has been around since there were motors and relays. 0:41 "i'm going to wire up these single pole double throw relays so that they do the exact same thing as a double" Um No. You are NOT doing the exact same thing. If you were energizing both relays at the same time, THEN you would be close to the exact same thing. Doing it this way adds the ability to stop the motor at any given position. You can't do that just using a DPDT relay. FYI on amazon you can find a harness to do this exact thing with. It is pre wired. Very inexpensive.

      Appreciate your thoughts but some of us live in parts of the world where electronics stores and Amazon are not easily accessible. At the time of this video I had access to basic hardware and automotive stores, and these were relays that you can get at almost all of these stores.

      @@hotrod-machines Yes that why I put FYI For Your Information. Generally meant as giving information for future use, or something to think about or even look into. It is not meant to be a "You don't know what you are doing you should have just use this or that". And if amazon is not accessible then just disregard. Also where do you live that you don't have access to amazon. WOW. I wasn't addressing the entire world just you. LOL. I made an assumption that if you have access to youtube to make and upload videos, I was sure you had access to amazon. You know they deliver? Not tryin to bust balls here but.....

    This video is perfect. I was trying to learn how relays can be used for various applications and I was stuck on how to build a reverse polarity system. In some circuit designs, this is similar to an "H Bridge," using MOSFETs -- but not exactly. Thanks again.

    I've watched 8 or so other videos on RUclips about this and they all did not correctly represent what was supposed to happen. not only did I replicate what you did, I was able to understand where the others went wrong, job well done Sir

    Thanks for a perfect explanation of how a reversing circuit works. I am upgrading my side mirrors from manual fold to power fold. I saw how to do this on another video, but the guy only provided a diagram. I bench tested the circuit and it worked perfectly. It came to me that it had to be a reversing circuit when I was trying to figure out if I needed to ground the mirrors to test them (I didn't). I know it works, but with your help I know HOW it works. Kudos!

    wow this video is absolutely, without a doubt, hands down the most useful, informative & beneficial video on youtube that i’ve seen thus far. with the sheer volume of DIY mechanics that self-teach from others experience solely here on youtube & log in with all different levels of knowledge & experience - most are doing so as a means to save money - or because they don’t have the money to afford the repairs to the cars they own. this not only inspires me to keep learning, growing & working at my goals within this industry - but it provides me with the means to do so & feel accomplished at the same time. for those of us who can’t afford the high dollar fixes on the vehicles we own & thus search for other ways - this is such a helpful video & this comment may seem over board but i’ve been trying to find something to help me in rebuilding my failed compressor without having to put out the money to do so …. yours is the first i’ve found & you explained it all in a way which everyone can understand. i’m going to share this to the GM tahoe yukon forum as there are many of people who will also benefit from this majorly. thanks again
