Audrey Adventures

Добавлен 3 окт 2011
Hi, I'm Audrey. But on trail, I'm known as Glowstick. In 2018, I quit my amazing job in Washington, D.C., to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I loved every second of it! Now, I'm living the dream in Boulder, Colorado, hiking, skiing, and paddleboarding in my free time, and dreaming of my next big adventure. I'm here to share my joy for the great outdoors and adventures big and small. I share information about thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, hiking trail spotlights, how tos, hiking gear tips and tricks, vlogs from my backpacking trips, and more. Follow me on Instagram @audipayne and feel free to reach out if there's a specific trail or topic you'd like me to cover! This is what it’s like to hike the Manaslu Circuit in Nepal!

Thank you so much for Nepal as your travel destination. Manaslu Trek is one of our favorites too, as it is less crowded and also has more cultural involvement. This region lies under a special permit, so the government has made it necessary to have a guide and also proper insurance. Happy to hear you enjoyed your trek in Nepal. We eagerly anticipate your return to the trails of Nepal.
Thank you for the shout-out Audrey!! Made me tear up a bit. I think we met in line at the little convenience store- he was buying a razor and I made some comment on how he couldn't go the whole trip without shaving, haha. Will always love VVR!
Crazy how the smallest conversation changed both of your lives in the biggest way!
Trail communities aren't asking people to flip flop, from everything I've seen the trail towns are BEGGING hikers to come, and were absolutely devastated to see a 30% reduction in thru hikers for 2025
@@bflagg94 Take it up with the ATC: appalachiantrail.org/official-blog/10-reasons-to-consider-a-flip-flop-thru-hike-in-2025/
Approximately how much did this cost... Not including your airfare???
$1400 for the trek, which included all expenses for lodging, food, guides, transportation to the mountains, etc. That did not include airfare or any expenses in Kathmandu.

@@suemoore1965 Hi, Sue! This hike was definitely gorgeous! ❤️
lovely overview. Do you know how long those suspension bridges are, they look quite long on camera.
Thanks, Ken! I’m not sure how long they are but yes, quite long! Back and forth, back and forth across the river haha.
Beautiful!
My wife, who was recovering from knee surgery, and I hiked from the visitor center to South Meadows campsite and had a wonderful time in a beautiful area in 2000. I recall that there was an old structure in Big Meadows that had to do with a haying operation a long time ago. I wonder if it survived the fire. Those two days were refreshing and restful.
That bottle you found at the 9:07 mark was probably radioactive. LOL

Your creativity and passion definitely deserve more recognition. 🌟✨ Looking forward to seeing more amazing videos from you. Stay awesome!
Thanks for the kind words and support! I appreciate it. :)
Thanks! I really appreciate the insights. Especially the very last one. Do you think a UV purifier would help with preventing viral transmission? I doubt that I'll ever get there but seeing your enthusiasm is so enjoyable.
I've heard mixed things about those UV purifiers so have never been inclined to get one. I think they're generally less effective than Sawyers but since they are purifiers instead of filters maybe in cases of visiting countries with unregulated water/ waterborne viruses (like Nepal)? Maybe worth doing both if someone doesn't mind a little extra work for their water. :) I definitely wouldn't have trusted the Sawyer to filter water in Kathmandu (I drank only bottled water there) but since the water at the huts is collected from rain water I felt okay about it. I'm definitely not an expert on waterborne illness though haha.
Yea, uv isn't very effective against cysts or parasites, and filters aren't any benefit against virus.I have been tempted to Cary both. Filter first, then uv. But I have never done anything except a sawyer filter. I might be tempted to do both if l ever managed to do a somewhat third world trip. Maybe the cost and slight weight penalty would be worth it. Your willingness to do these international adventures is impressive.
What an amazing adventure! On my to-do list for sure. I remember making apple fritters with my mother when I was a kid.
Thank you! Definitely recommend this one. The local cider mill in the town where I grew up had apple fritters but they were totally different from these ones. I wouldn't turn down either kind though hehe.
Good video. Scratch the golden for me. I saw an amusing YT video yesterday of two goldens in a pool and their ball is on the bottom. They are discussing how to get it. Our goofies loved to dive completely under water to grab fish/balls/ or the minute maid frozen lemon bottle that tey loved. The bottle used to be made of a very heavy palstic that was soft. The dogs loved to fetch it and chew it. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
She would love that - she loves people! Hahah that video sounds great. Did they ever get the ball? Wow I'm amazed your dogs could catch fish! I've never seen a dog do that.
@@AudreyAdventures Kachina was a swimming fool. She would jump off of the dock at the kennel where we got her and try to catch fish. Kinikinik was the one who could catch the fish when he dove off of the dock. Martha said that he didn't know what to do with it the first time he caught one so, he brought it to show her. The fish wiggled and he swallowed it. The expression on his face had Martha in hysterics. The kennel newfies saw how much fun our two were having and joined in. Many preferred to just stand in belly deep water and wait for the fish to come around. Sometimes, I'd stop in on the way home from work with dinner for everyone(people that is) and there would be a dozen goofies standing in the water watching the fish. It was a funny sight. Good Luck, Rick
@@richardross7219 Oh my goooosh how cute!! That sounds like newfie heaven! Also I love how you call them goofies haha.

could you make a video on budgeting/saving for this hike? i’m trying to get an idea of how much i’d need to save up. if you could include gear or things you need to buy before the hike that would be awesome!
@@cammykisses3255 I have a video on how much I spent during this hike - you can find it in my Colorado Trail playlist. I treated it like a vacation though so you can definitely get away with spending less! I also have a video in that playlist on gear and resupplies.
great job!
Thanks!
Any word on how bad Hurricane Helene tore up the trail? I'm getting reports from my AT friends in the Carolinas that Uncle Johnny's in Erwin was hit pretty hard. The bridge over the Nolichucky River is gone and there's a lot of damage along the trail around the Roan's Mountain area and as far north as Damascus, Virginia. Stickman AT class of 2010, 2012, and 2018
Here’s a good resource: thetrek.co/appalachian-trail/hurricane-helene-repairs-on-the-at-are-well-underway-trail-clubs-ask-2025-hikers-to-consider-flip-flopping/
Of course this book you wrote is amazing...
You forgot to mention places to receive resupply mail-drops! Little know fact: you can mail packages to yourself addressed to Your Name, Care Of General Delivery (insert town, state and zip here). Make sure that you name on the label is exactly as it is listed on your Drivers Licenses. Best places to send and pick up your resupply packages are Jefferson CO, Breckenridge or Frisco CO, Leadville CO, the gas station at Twin Lakes CO, the lodge at Mount Princeton Hot Springs CO, Salida CO, Lake City CO, and Silverton CO. Sergeants CO, Saguache CO and Creed CO are a bit of a stretch but doable if you're lucky hitching a ride into town. I found the Large USPS Bulk Rate Box can be filled with enough food and other items to get you to the next town.
I have a whole video in my Colorado Trail playlist about resupplies. I don’t think it’s super necessary though. The only places I’d suggest them is Twin Lakes and Silverton.
@@AudreyAdventures My bad! Stickman CT class of 2018 and 2020
Thank you for posting this list! 🙏
@@AudreyAdventures why do you think it’s not necessary? Do you just hitch to a near town instead of mailing things to yourself? Planning for CT this year
@ Yes - you can just buy what you need in most towns, and that way you’re also supporting the local economies along the way. For example, I sent a box to Lake City and regretted it. The grocery store, church, and bakery there have everything you could possibly need, and the people there to out of their way to help hikers so the box was not needed at all.
🎯 Nice review. When it comes to sun protection, wickability, etc.; lightweight is great. SPF 15 doesn’t bother me. Another analogy is: SPF 15 equates to 1 hour of Sun exposure for every 15 spent in the Sun. (We all need a little vitamin D!!!) Plus, that “exposure” is as gradual as it gets. Happy Trails ‼️
Excellent analogy - thank you!! 😊
30 videos on the Colorado trail, thank you, planning on it next year. I will definitely start digesting all of it. El Camino full Portugal last year, Tahoe rim this August, Colorado trail after that. Appreciate everything, looks like you had a great time. Any trouble asjusting to altitude in the beginning?
Thank you! No elevation issues for me but I live in Colorado.
I’m the same way, after any physical activity, I take a break and cool down real fast and have to put multiple layers on, even in the peak of summer, but I stay cold for a long time afterwards. It sucks. Cold sleeper also.
Ugh it is the worst!! It’s especially tough while backpacking because it will take me forever to heat up my sleeping bag!
thanks for the tips!
You’re welcome!
Good advice. On my thru hike in 1990 only a couple of hikers had trekking poles which to this date I have never used while hiking. The one place I would have liked to have them was to ford streams especially in Maine. Since I didn`t start until May 5th I didn`t have any cold weather until the Whites but by then my body had adjusted easier to the cold gradually. It seems now a number of hikers stop and get a ride into town every few days which didn`t happen in 1990. I resupplied every 10 -14 days unless which meant carrying more weight.
I bet your pack must have been so heavy, since gear was heavier plus the 10-14 days of food! I bet that was such a cool experience though - doing the trail before it was so busy. Okay I was sooooo skeptical of the trekking poles but now I totally love them! It's like I get to become a 4-legged creature haha.
@@AudreyAdventures Yes my pack was 78 pounds when I started. God rid of alot of unnecessary weight at Neels Gap! Once I got to Hot Springs I had my pack weight down to 45 pounds. I tried to resupply where there was a store close to the trail. I had only 1 mail resupply in Gorham for my 0 degree sleeping bag after going thru the Whites with a 40 degree bag. Of Course it warmed up t0 60 degrees in the 100 mile wilderness and I had to sleep on top of my new down sleeping bag, Finished my hike on a cold windy day on October 9th.
Always good to get advice from an AT thruhiker on anything AT related. Travel insurance, I never really thought about so very interesting. Ticks are always my biggest concern when hiking in general. Always good advice. I wish you thruhike the AT again. Maybe one day 😊. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
I'm lucky in Colorado that we don't have to worry about ticks much, so I always have to remind myself when I go back to the East Coast haha. I'm shocked how many ticks I always see at my parents' house in Western NY now. We never really used to get them there and now they're all over the place. It's scary. You and me both wish I would go hike the AT again haha! I'm confident it will happen again. Just not sure when. I always say if I ever get laid off the AT is gonna be my first stop!
I've really enjoyed watching this series! Never Ending Peace And Love! 😍 That's awesome. Were the other hikers feeling OK at that point?
Thank you! Nepal is amazing in so many ways. A couple of the other hikers took diamox (a med to deal with the altitude), and one other person did not take it but was feeling crappy on pass day, but everyone else fared pretty well! I think Yullia and I had it the easiest. She is a mountaineer so lots of experience at high elevation and of course I have the benefit of living in Colorado.
Read Warren Doyle’s two page book on hiking the Appalachian Trail. It contains the 13 Statements of Wisdom. Remember hiking the trail is a trial. Find it on his webpage. Cheers!
Good advice.
Thank you! 😄
Looking forward to whatever your hiking plans this summer are. I'll definitely follow along. If anyone reading this hasn't seen Audrey's book, I recommend you check it out. It's a verry enjoyable read.

@@kennethschaidle5995 Hehe thank you!! Have you been writing any poetry lately?
Very good video. You may find that your auto insurance or AAA offer a decent travel insurance(medical and cancellations). There are 9 tick diseases in CT and along the AT. I find that redoing the Permethrin every 4 weeks is more realistic. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Ah thank you, Rick! I had no idea that auto insurance also sometimes offers travel insurance so I will have to look into that! Oh yes you know I tend to forget about the other tick-borne illnesses because I’m less familiar but you’re exactly right.
I’m wondering when you experienced the 6 degree temperature in Georgia mountains on your AT hike? It would help in planning. Thanks 🙏🙂
