Fe 290 D coil rpm limiter igniter. ohms
The igniter bolts right behind the rev limiter. After removing the rev limiter brown wire 10mm bolt it sparked again so I cut the black line right next to the male plug in your picture & just left the short black part connecting the coil to the igniter. No rev limiter used now. Goes good again.I used a mirror to see what I was doing. You cant just disconnect the wire from the coil going down to the rev limiter. It needs the small igniter box as well.I have no high voltage to charge the battery as well .Thats the Voltage regulator at fault.
@lomasck yes the wire coming out to your battery from the voltage regulator need to read 13.5 to 14.5. If it reads less than 13.5 time to replace it.
@lomasck correct just the ground wire from the rev limiter to regain spark. Should replace it as well, it protects your motor from over reving the RPMs .

I’m having trouble reading ohms on my multi meter. Is the coil supposed to be grounded normally?
No, while testing no. now to operate while on the engine it naturally is grounded to the motor. so to answer your question is no.
This video is so helpful but I am still struggling to figure out what is going on with my 2003 club car ds. Is there any way that I could contact you direct to see about helping me out with this problem? Thanks. Jeff.
What does the igniter plug into.... took mine out but it wasn't plugged into anything
If yours was not plugged in and the unit does run. It's because someone has changed. The coil or pick up coil at the flywheel. And it is now in that coil your system has been converted. That being said , if it didn't start and run and what's unplugged , there's only one Leave, that would be exposed.Just hanging there, not plugged in right.Any further issues?Call me after four thirty michigan time 9893950913 nick
This is a very good video how to troubleshoot these components and the progression of checking. I’ll be working on mine tomorrow thanks.
my carts full throttle when turn key and wont shut off?? any ideas what would cause this?
This vid should have million views, thanks man! Perfect answers that I’ve searched for for a looonnng time!
Hello I know this video is a year old, not sure if you are still replying to comments or not but. I'm trying to fix my dad's old golf cart that has a 1999 kawasaki FE290D-AS17 engine. The Problem it is having is intermittent spark. some times it will run great all day and other times it won't even drive out of the shed. The problem has been getting getting worse over the past two or three weeks and now it's very unreliable. I've tried removing the rev-limiter, still does the same thing. This does not have the igniter behind the rev-limiter plate just a wire that goes under the heat shield. Does the 1999 model kawasaki FE290D-AS17 not have an igniter or is it somewhere else? I've noticed if I take a screwdriver and ground out the plug wire for several spins of the engine, it will start sparking again for a little while before then stopping again. Not sure if that helps with the diagnosis or not but...
A hard start to your issue is to evaluate all of the equipment wiring. The connections that allow Spark to exist, and stop. Do you possess what they call a spark tester?
I know this sounds simple, but have you replace the spark plug? My concern is that there’s a crack in the porcelain if it’s the old one.
@@Contractorrepair I don't have an inline spark tester but I tested with a screwdriver in the plug wire and the spark is very inconsistent and sometimes it won't spark until I ground out the plug wire on the head for a few spins. The plug is new and I tested it in a lawnmower that ran fine with it.
For Anyone having the same issue. I was able to confirm that the 1999 model has the igniter built into the coil and that was the issue in my case. I replaced the coil and it's doing good again now.
Does the voltage regulator hook up to ignitor
It does not , the igniter acts like a capacitor. Your voltage regulator comes off of your starter generator leads into the black box. It regulates the power that comes off of the surge generator and ensures that you have a sufficient amount of voltage in your battery for the next time, the engine startsand keeps it charged as you use accessories like lights etc. that would draw off of the battery. An igniter is in your start and run system which is separate. If you need more information and you’re able to you can call me it’s 989-395-0913 ask for Nick.
To describe it a little better inside the black box weird throttle control is just behind your seat. That’s where the vultures regulator would normally sit down in there, so the starter motor is two phase it first turns the engine over at a certain RPMs when the engine itself starts up it converts into what they call a alternator/generator. It delivers power down to the voltage regulator, and that determines how many volts are put into your battery most the time you want to provide more than 12 V some run 13.5 and up to 14.75. It all depends on the strength. I have seen the mounted outside where someone had removed it and then mounted it outside the black box somewhere it’s about a 3“ x 3“ square flat with one hole right through the center of of it that mounts to the bottom of the plastic box the black plastic box.
Best I’ve seen! Thanks man, quick and very informative.
Thanks Chad.
Rev limiter
For the revolter
Do you think you could do a video of the entire wiring?
I’ll get working on this great idea!
I was wondering if the red limit would work on predator 212 and do you know what the red limit is?
Appreciate the video sir
This video was extremely helpful . To bad I found it after digging in myself. Ended up being a bad coil. One heck of a job in a club cart.
Thanx So Much..!! I'm just getting into a 2000 Club Car Gas and I'm "Learning Before Burning"..!! Thanx Again..!!
I have a 1996 club car carryall 1 with an early FE290 that has a weak spark.....I installed a new coil but my tech helper said he forgot to set the gap on the new coil install....could that make that big of a difference? It'll arc spark to the block but not to the end tab of the new spark plug....seems weird to me...Thanks...Ken in N.C.
great video----thanks
best explanation I've seen
This info is priceless!!! Thank you my friend!

Nick - Great Video. I have a 95 Club Car DS Gas with the FE 290. I was driving it and it would run great get down the road, stop and it would not get going again. I would go get my trailer and after 20 min of cooling down it would start running again. I have replaced my coil, but it still is doing the same thing. Should I replace the rev limiter or coil igniter next?
I would disconnect the riv limiter at the brown wire First. Run and test. If the spark still fails then replace Igniter and test again. Keep me updated.
@@Contractorrepair I removed the brown wire to the rev limiter. I tested and the cart did the same thing. I let it cool down and the spark came back. Do I replace the igniter then or the rev limiter?
Replace the ignitor/ and or Ignition coil.
I don't normally leave comments on here....but i reached out to this dude and he gave me the time of day that isn't normal anymore. Has the wisdom, knowledge, and patience to get most folks through a golf carts ignition system over the phone. Also does what he says he's gonna do. Use his services! He's worth it! Thank you Nick!!
I'm so glad things worked out for you. I help people because there was a day back when I was a young man and I was struggling and no one would reach out to help me.
My starter motor keeps burning up. Previous owner removed Rev limiter and adjusted the governor. He used it in his driveway with no problems. But now that I have it, it’s driven more frequently and longer trips. Thats why it’s failing. Will installing a new rev limiter and voltage regulator solve my problem?
Well, It could be a multitude of things ,now adjusting the governor down. Just slow the speed down to about eighteen miles an hour I suggest. You will know because does the cart will travel slower. second of all and I say this with 30 years of experience. A silver line brand starter gen/ remand of non club car . There is a 60/40 chance the starter will fail. I have had some fail in 600 yrs brand new off Amazon. I'm sure you get my point. Are you brushes going to hell? It might be easier just to give me a call 989 395 0919 Nick

It's an igniter back there.
Somehow I missed your post I feel terrible. Did you find it? Again sorry. Keep in the loop if I can help.
It would be great if your asking questions on a problem and possible repair, Follow up with the results for others and for (Contractorrepair) he is helping you and he will sometimes ask the results if it helped etc. and no response from anyone. Its like get your answer and forget to thank him or even pass on the info to help others with the results. Sorry to say however if I were him, I would unsubscribe you from the channel and never answer another question for you. Simply rude to get free help and just ignore everything from that point on. Just my thoughts, anyway, thank you for being there and offering your knowledge and years of experience ( Contractorrepair ) to put videos together to help people DIY and help them save money and learn how to do repairs themselves. Great job and thank you.
Very informative and clear presentation

Thank you very much. This was a big help.
I clicked vid. To see location of limiter. Didn't even show it. Lol
Directly under your valve cover about 4 inches .small 3x4 inch black box.
here ya go
I know this is an old video but I just got my first cart. It's a 87vor 88 I think. It's getting weak and intermittent spark. And other times it's great spark and runs fine other then a back fire. Any idea??
Adjust the valves to start with. Then check the end of the plug wire at its connector and look for either wires that have or are not making contact with the plug end. Then goes to the brown wire coming off the Rev limiter ( black square box lower of the valve cover down in front of the motor. The brown wire will be connected to a bolt. This bolt grounds the Rev limiter. Unbolt it, let it hang free strat and run. See, at this point, we have checked to see if we have a good connection where we need it, and with brown wire off, we are checking the Rev limiter for intermittent failure. If your engine stops, miss firing we have found the issue . A Rev limiter, if it fails, literally shuts down the spark in the event you engines RPM are to great . This Rev limiter saves the engine from taking out your govenor.so we want to ensure this Rev limiter is functional at the right time. The backfire is a traight of a loss of spark at some point . Following what's above, we isolate why. After this we then check all wiring near the Rev limiter and see if the black wire running into the fly wheel area may have worn the coating off it and is it shorting the coil out intermittently . I lift the rear of the cart wheels off the ground and shut off all the light and watch for arcing.neear that area.
@@Contractorrepair thanks so much for responding. You the man! Went out sanded all grounds and every connector I could find. Still just weak to no spark. Disconnected the rpm limiter something. Got annoyed came back little later and turned key and had great spark. Drove it around till I got bored back fired 2 or 3 times when letting of off gas. I don't know how I can have spark randomly and not have it others. You don't have to respond don't want to waste your time just confused lol. Again thanks for the response.

Can you bypass the rav limiter
Yes
Yes you can.
Just unhook the ground wire
@@timbower-ms8xw yes
What the heck is the point of this vid? You should nothing. You have zero information.
What if the rev limitor is reading 7.4 does that means it’s bad?
Bad or will be soon.
When is disconnect the white and black wire from rev limiter it runs when connected no spark figure I could use your knowledge thanks
I'm trying to fix the same controller. Two IRFIZ48Gt are defective and unfortunately a pair of charred resistors where I can no longer read the values. Do you perhaps have a photo of the board with the large capacitors? Would help me a lot
I wish I had that engine rear end in cradle
Thanks for the video. I picked up a rev limiter to try and put on a small engine that doesn't have one. My wire with the ring is red. I'll give this a try.
Standard belt size???
Are you asking what the belt size is ?
1016203 China. Look on Amazon. 13.00 to 19.00
I recently got a 550 mule with the fe290 engine, i put a new carb on, it has good spark but will not crank or even fire. It is blowing misty fuel?/smoke out the carb intake. i adjusted valves with no change. You think it could be that the intake valve needs lapping? I could post a video of what its doing.
Time to pull the head. Valve action ( poor closing of the intake and it's call blow back. Our piston at Top Dead center or in lamins term 90 before the piston return back in to cylinder. Once the pistons come up to the top off the cylinder that's call TDC.se under compression both valves need to be closed and I mean closed. I great way to check is once we are at TDC is to pop the valve cover and wiggle the rocker arms and if we find lots of play or it tighter than hell it's time to adjust the valves to 0.06 both will the piston up at TDC. If there's still blow back out the intake the intake valve is ether hanging open and or bent. This my seem like a lot of info. But start here and if that S.O.B. still blows back get the head off its time to see under the plug and valve seat area.
Do you have a compression tester. Take a reading before the heads removed then after the new gasket ( head gasket ), is reinstalled check it again. What's you plug the original one look like wet and oily or dry and black chalky looking.
Bye the way it's club car DS gas same motor I feel like the igniter has come off unless it is attached to the ingnition coil if it is whey would they run that wire threw there like that not room for ntn can't even see if it is plugged in on other side they made everything easy to replace but that ingnition coil man what a night mare iv replaced everything on this club car but that .
MIKE . call me I can help better over the phone with you infront of the cart. I'll make it easy.
Yes it is an event to change out the coil. Have you removed the mounting plate that hold the Rev limiter yet . There is a section of this video that shows you the two 10 mm bolts to remove and unplug the harness 2 places in order to even see if to do have an ignitor. Once that plate is of flip it over. It's chrome small and one wire may go to it . If there is not a igniter there you coil is all in one and doesn't need a ignitor. I can talk you through it. Call me you have my number next time you ready to dig in to it. Nick.
Yea mine is set up just like the video u have where u got it all out on paper about what to test for ur ohns but if the igniter was attached to coil would that black wire be running out there where it goes thru beside that motor bracket iv took that plate off hell I can't remember if it was on there not damit thing run good crank up be riding just stops like I took my foot off pedal then it might start might not but more not than yes.i feel like I've been pushing it more than riding lol
I got question I got that same motor is the igniter behind the rev limiter u got the rev limiter the there a plate behind there ok there's a black wire running threw there what does that plug to the igniter or rev limiter is the igniter on the coil or is it on that plate.i hooked the wire coming off the rev limiter coming off the spliced wire is that right or wrong still no fire to engine I can jump it from silonoid will not fire off unless I jump it any idea what problem is also I got new rev limiter it's a little bigger than one came off is this one wrong have not hooked up yet the wires are opposite brown wire is where black wire is on old one.
