    2:56 I had the first Everquest auction on eBay; 1000 platinum on Tunare that went for $750'ish. There's a long conversation about it on the Everquest usenet group.

    • @Noglegz
      @Noglegz 5 дней назад

      bit more info; The thread is titled "1000 plat forsale on Tunare Server" in the alt games everquest usenet group. Despite some of the replies on there, I didn't start that thread or tell anyone else to. The only person on the server I initially told about this was Kaylum. I remember telling him to keep it between us and how I wasn't sure if it'd get any bids. He offered to buy it for $20 if it did go bidless (I vaguely recall him saying something about skipping eating a pizza for a day or something like this but might be wrong about that, lol). Used to chat frequently with Kaylum and viewed him as an outsider amongst the high(er) level folks on Tunare. Didn't want the entire server to know! At the time I created that auction, I had something like 3500 platinum. I was Sutekh on Tunare.

    • @computergamingyesterday
      @computergamingyesterday 4 дня назад

      Something you'll find in the book: the developers were absolutely stunned when this began to happen. They had no idea anyone would want to pay real money for characters and items in the game. It was a different time, wasn't it?

    • @Noglegz
      @Noglegz День назад

      @@computergamingyesterday Yup, my thinking was that it'd have some mild interest and may get $50'ish, but also had some thought it may get no bids at all. Was shocked when it took off within a day after listing. It was over $1000 for a bit, but these bids were removed prior to it selling (unsure if people retracted bids later or if they were removed by eBay itself). I can't pull the original auction on eBay anymore & I remember asking them some 5 yrs or so ago if they could retrieve it from their archives so I could save it, but was told this wasn't possible. I remember being run off eBay when they caved to it being "intellectual property." Unsure what caused this, lawyers from Sony itself, customer complaints, etc. I do remember this Jonathan Yantis fellow having some legal background and him not buying this argument and starting up his bulletin board and contacted all the big sellers to sell on his storefront, which became the primary place for a bit after eBay stopped allowing sales. This later became the mysupersales site which he sold for, what, 20 million or something a while back? I forget exactly.

    According to the one official guide, apparently SimCity 3000 has a tile by tile value on each tile of road, road by bus, rail, subway, and other things like getting on a bus station and swapping between one method to another, like car to bus station, etc. I seem to recall it coming out to something like this: Roads, directly from one zone tile in a straight line to another zone tile, can go about 1/4 the map Roads by bus go slightly further Rails about half way across the map Highway I think is equal to rail, except via a car or bus Subway can go across the entire map Then there is the value to transition travel methods. If you have to drive to the train station to reach it, it takes a bigger chunk of time than a single road tile to switch travel methods. Meaning having to drive more than a block to a train station to get to work can greatly reduce the effectiveness of bothering to take the train. It can also just generate even more local traffic issues driving to the train station, especially if you use the IRL logic, a person might drive a few blocks IRL to get to the station. However, this is compounded by the fact that industry born traffic checks can't go by bus or subway ever, and means industry always needs direct access to roads or rail, and by extension, both limits how far away industry can be from the other zones, and also means you might have to run undesirable trains occasionally through residential areas, at least until you get to 100% clean industry and can put them right up against stuff like residential zones. This results in annoying things, like a R to R, R to C, R to I, C to R, C to C, C to I traffic can all use subway to travel the entire map, but your I to R, I to C, or I to I traffic can only be at most half a map away, if you use trains. Also, apparently there's at best an 80% chance or such, WITH ordinances, to use non personal vehicle travel. Meaning if you want to ensure 100% successful traffic attempts, everything has to be built confined by road travel restrictions. I used to love SimCity 3000, even while not fully understanding the traffic for years, as overall I thought it was the best city sim made (until Skylines). But I always wondered why traffic flow felt so, weird. Now I know. And when I built a recent city using all this in mind, and built things in squares around bus stations and later subways, I began to realize that an ideal city seems to require building a ton of mass transit entry points directly in range of zone tiles. This most recent city, once I got the ordinances going, was the first ever where I eventually saw road traffic almost disappear after getting subways and trains everywhere. Also, while the game doesn't have physically rendered traffic jams, at least in SimCity 3000, there is supposed to be something to calculate being stuck in a traffic jam via the simulation, that's supposed to increase travel distance per tile, which can reduce travel efficiency, and result in a failed trip. And apparently the game will try to recalculate future travel attempts around the jams. So SimCity 3000 does have traffic management, just not in the same overt, physical way. At this point, it's still a good game, but by understanding how to better manipulate the road traffic to nearly not exist, and get people on mass transit, I kinda feel like my zoning strategy has become super cookie cutter by necessity. Skylines, however, as you point out, actually follows some sense of IRL logic, and you can actually get people to travel all the way across town to a job, and not just two blocks away.

    I've seen some people and families destroyed during my time on EQ and EQOA for the PS2. EQ wasn't the culprit, but it was the medium by which these things occurred. I saw some things play out that I didn't really understand when I was a 13 year old playing my dark elf shadowknight. Now that I'm an adult in my 30s I am slightly disturbed. Ultimately these issues are people issues, not video game issues.

    Compare the amount of dopamine and time to delivery of everquest to call of duty, you had to work for lateral hours for even the tinyiest of advancements in stats, and that tiny hit of dopamine was so powerful it kept you coming back months after months. Comparatively call of duty floods your system with dopamine rewards and diminishes its potency

    By the time velious was released the dev team of everquest had become adversarial to the end game top guilds, so much so that the final dungeon of velious was designed with intent to punish the number one guild in the server, once the four warders were killed, they were gone permanently from the server, denying the experience to every other guild who may have been slower

      Because, as sad as it is , the AC franchise along with many others got "normiefied" or dumbed down/simplified so much to have amass appeal to a large audience while losing much of the original or quality features it once had. That's why I stopped playing AC after Syndicate because I saw it coming, I knew it was going down hill.
