What was the pride on them
I've been selling them 20 each or 3 for 50, but it will depend on your local market.
Cool project
Thanks, Jason. Working on an update video with some new designs right now!
Pro tip; turn your nail gun so that it is parallel with the edge instead of perpendicular to it. You rarely ever have a blow out.
Thanks for the comment, but that's actually not correct. Brad nails are thinner on one side than the other, kind of like a 2x4, and that thin side is oriented so that it comes out of the gun much more likely to bend to the left or right of the gun, as opposed to along the same direction (forward or back). Of course, things like wood grain direction and knots will affect things, but in general, you should nail perpendicular to the board you're driving into. That way, if the nail flexes left or right of the gun, it's far less likely to come out the side of the bottom board because it would need to flex forward or back along the thicker profile to do so. I've thought about making a video about this, but haven't because both Brad Rodriguez at Fix this Build That and the Honest Carpenter have already done comprehensive videos on it. Maybe I'll do one anyway, or maybe I'll mention it in the follow up video I'm working on to this one right now.
Nice job!...appreciate the explanation. If we have time, we may make these for our upcoming September show.
Thanks, Bill. I hope to put out an update video in next few days with some new designs too.
How much do you sell them for?
20 each or 3 for 50. But that's really going to depend on your market.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking That's what I had in mind. thanks! I live in Az
Where did you get the item you used to push your wood through the table saw.
That's the Microjig Grr-Ripper Pushblock. It's awesome. In fact, I have a couple of them. I added an Amazon affiliate link to it in the video description for you.
Great idea!
Thanks Andrew! I'm going to put out an update video soon on some new designs for these.
Really neat! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Very well done
Thank you!
Some damn fool always has to come along and screw up evertthing!!!
You mean the formula?
What is the height of your sacrificial fence? I have the same saw and love that idea. Thx
I just checked. It's 4.5 inches, about .5 less than the fence, but not by any specific design. It was just an offcut piece of 1/2" plywood I had in my scrap bin at the time that was around the right size.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate the help
Thanks for sharing! Thinking of tackling this this year.
No problem, glad you liked it! I'm going to do a follow up video in a few weeks with some new designs.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking Nice, Looking forward to it!
Thanks for show the cross flag. Made 3 turned out nice.
Awesome! Glad to hear it.
Dude, thanks for the video, but you have a very expensive saw, and it's foolish not to buy a dial indicator to check the saw blade and fence.
I did after a while, and it was perfect. I would expect no less from an expensive tool. I've been using table saws long enough that I would have known after a couple of cuts if it was off.
Great craftsmanship !!!
Thanks, Ed!
tom did u use a cnc program to do the carving on the cnc
I'm not sure what you mean. A CNC is just an automated router that runs on a Gcode file. The Gcode file is generated by CAM software from a design file created in some kind of CAD software. So, every CNC requires software to generate the code to run it. At the time I made this, I was using Fusion360. Now I use Vectric VCarve, but there are a lot of different software brands and types that do this.
Very nice video and informative and it was not to long. Last night I dreamed about my shop and what could I make for my area to sale and what would sale good around my area. It was a cross I didn't know what kind to make so when I got up this morning I went and did a search on crosses on You tube and wow there was your video, then I knew that was a sign to make these. Thanks you for making this video for us. I enjoyed watching it. I made one and I like that it will help me get rid of all this scrap wood. I make American flags and I have a lot of 1 1/2 inch scrap.
Yes! These are perfect for all that scrap! That also gives them a very high profit margin since you're not paying for materials, especially once you get better and faster at making them. Make sure you watch my videos on the assembly jig and Star Templates I make for these crosses, they are game changers in batching them out. I also have a video on the bottle openers that are also made with the scraps from flags, so check that out too.
Unboxed mine last night and installed the mobile base (not the ICS Hydraulic one). Trying to get the saw off the pallet and on its "feet" was scary and very difficult (my girlfriend and I are both in our late 60's, and the weight was just too much). Since I didn't want to call my neighbors around midnight (I'm impatient), I came up with a plan... using a Hi-Lift Jack and 1000lb straps, I got the saw tilted about 30° before I ran out of lift capacity of the jack. Then I recalled Archimedes statement, "Give me a big enough lever and a place to stand and I will move the world". Well, hell, this HAD to be easier than the world, right? So, I got a couple of 6' long 2x4's, and alternating between the two (Lever it up with one 2x4, then push the other in next to it, a bit further in; rinse & repeat), we managed to get the saw upright with no damage or serious injuries (I did sprain my finger trying to lift the table end, prior to the strap/jack/lever process. It's ironic that I hurt my finger assembling a saw that I bought to PROTECT my fingers, LOL). If I had a do-over (or a shop crane), I'd do it differently. Next: on to the extension tables!
Yeah it's definitely too heavy for 2 people. That's how I originally tried it, with 2 big dudes in their 40s, and we couldn't do it without causing damage. Glad you got it sorted out. Hopefully the rest of the assembly went well.
Great video(s). Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the reason the supplied push stick is somewhat pliable is, the more rigid push sticks are made of a different plastic that is prone to shattering when it comes in contact with the blade in certain ways, spraying plastic shrapnel all over the place. Wood is your best option, but the soft, foam-ended aftermarket push sticks work really well too, if you want to spend the $$$. Thanks also for the table-leveling/co-planar solution - that would drive me nuts, too. And by the way, what OCD REALLY means is, PUT THE DAMNED THING BACK WHERE IT BELONGS!, LOL. My 1.75 PCS is down in the shop right now; I only unboxed it enough to get to the manual so far. I'm in the middle of installing our new kitchen cabinets, and we can't order the granite until the lowers (and island) are installed & leveled, so that takes priority. Thanks again for the in-depth explanations of what you ran into - lots of peeps hide their mistakes, which makes their videos nothing but "fluff" pieces. Enjoy the saw.
Thanks Tony. Good point about the push stick. I know that now, but didn't consider it then. I'm actually quite fond of it now, though I use a micro jig gripper more often than a push stick. I don't remember the OCD context from this video and maybe I mischaracterized it a bit, but I deal with it in a lot of other ways like being adamant about the exact positioning and location of things, counting in my head to a very specific number (25) for every little thing I do (steps walking, sanding strokes or buffing circles, counting down time, organizing things by amount, etc.), among other ways.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking Got the PCS 1.75 assembled & "tuned". Oddly, my tables all lined up pretty close to perfectly. I just snugged the bolts and tapped with a mallet in the places that needed tweaking. Didn't have to do the mod on the end wing adjustment screw. Biggest challenge was getting it off its side and onto the mobile base. Used a combination of Straps, Farm Jack (Hi-lift), and finally, some 2x4's as levers. Thanks Archimedes, LOL. Ironically, I sprained one of my fingers pretty badly trying to lift the saw enough to get the strap under it. So the saw I bought to protect my fingers...*sigh*. There's just no winning. Now I have to convert the miter bars on all of my (many) jigs & fixtures to fit the new saw.
I made some of these for last year's Halloween, but I never thought about making a ghost.that looks pretty cool
I made a few others as well, like an owl and frankenstein. The frankenstein was the three most popular of them all. I'll probably do a follow up video on those soon.
If you ever need any CNC work let me know. Thanks, John
I liked your video. And subscribed. Like your presentation style. Id like to see a video on your dust collection system and watching u connect it to the SS
I recently got a dedicated dust collector and will will be seeing it up and doing a video on it soon. Before that I used the rolling cart from a couple videos ago. It worked, but not great. I'll try to show the before and after set ups in the new video.
I would really like to have a sander like that is much need it :)
It's been great for me for about a year now. I will eventually upgrade to a more expensive one though.
What eventually you gonna get? Im after one of those, they vary from 190 euro to 240 euro which ia Maxxt, next one is 3m which ia like double the price and then even more expensive Mirka... @@maverickdesignswoodworking
I use a 1x6 and it works just fine with less work and same money when i sell them
I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to the proportions being correct. Since I use 1" laser cut stars, I need the three stripes to be 1.5 inches. At 5.5", your stars would need to be 1.5".
From what I gathered the nozzles, the basic ones only work upward, where as like the T8000 work both directions, so it maybe just be something to do with that… I’ve been looking at a couple different ones trying to figure out difference and that’s only thing I noticed on packaging was direction of use.
Interesting. I never considered that. Thanks for the info.
huge improvement, you will have some fun now with that big drill press :)
Definitely. It's been a huge improvement.
Those jigs are perfect, thank you for all your tips to make these flag projects.
Thank you, and you're absolutely welcome!
Thanks for the videos. I watched both. I’m awaiting my new SS PCS 3hp 36”. This video has been very helpful for when mine shows up. Definitely gonna need some horsepower to get her into the shop and onto the industrial base. Dandy videos. I’m also subscribed.
Thanks Kenny. I'm glad you found them helpful.
Cool project Tom. 👍🏻 Well done!
Thanks Dave!
What is the measurement of the union template?
The union for this flag is 4-3/8 x 6-3/16. I use a flag dimensions calculator that's free. Here's the link: www.inchcalculator.com/american-flag-size-proportions-calculator/ Just type in 8.125 for the width (hoist) and hit calculate, and it will give you all the recommended dimensions for a flag this size. Hope that helps.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking thank you sir for responding so quickly, have a blessed day and how much are your flag template, they are beautiful and look like it would takeoff a lot of time making these. I love my America 🇺🇸 I spent 20 years in the Army National Guard in Georgia, and got my veteran status in the Gulf War during Kuwait and Iraq.GodBless you and your family and friends.
Thanks David. I've spent time in Kuwait and Iraq myself. I haven't designed a template for this size yet, but I will. I'm currently on vacation for the next couple weeks, but I'll work on that a soon as I get back. Email me at maverickdesignswoodworking@gmail.com and I'll send you the details and let you know when it's ready.
We are the only ones that go over our woodworking with a microscope. There's always the scrap bin. I always hear, no, no, no, don't toss it. Nah, I can't live with it.
Yup, I know what you mean!
The Hercules job site saw is a very good choice. It is essentially a DeWalt without the price. It is a saw that a home owner can use for a ton of projects around the house. If you’re going to build fine woodworking, then drop the coin and by a Laguna or SawStop at $3-5K, otherwise quit complaining about precision cuts and options. I’ve had a Hurcules for a couple of years and have built shop fixtures/furniture, outdoor projects with absolutely no problems. Lastly, EVERY saw manufacturer sells their saws with a basic blade; even the high dollar ones. If you want a better long lasting cut, spend a few dollars on a different blade and the same goes for miter gauges. ALL of them come with a cheap miter gauge. Reviewers always compare a contractor saw with expensive free standing saws. I watched a reviewer criticize a $8K shop grade saw saying it didn’t preform up to his expectations. ????
I basically said the same in this review. Not only is it a very good saw, but the blade that came with it was quite impressive. My only real negatives were the inability to take a dado stack and the extension lock that quit working.
I wish I watched this before ruining my piece! So thick. Immediately wipe off. Didn’t work well for me. Your description of gumming and rolling spot on. What a pain. Getting my sander ready now. :-( Also thank you for a great tutorial.
Watch the part 2 to this video. Basically, I tell you to use the solid stain instead of the semi transparent and compare the two. The solid works great, just like the original formula.
verrrrry niiiice
Thank you!

Hey Tom, just wanted to give you a shout and say that the star template works great, also love the jig for making the crosses. I just got all my wood cut for 25 more crosses and once I get them stained the jig and the stars template will get another work out. Thanks again for the great products. Very well constructed and thought out 👍👍👍
Thanks so much, Robert. I'm really glad you like them. I forgot that you had the star template already. I just used it for the first time a couple days ago to film this video. I had great results with it as well, otherwise I wouldn't have released this video, lol. It really shines for the bigger flags, as it reduces the amount of time to put them on dramatically.
Love the cross jig! Will definitely be ordering some of these as well! I appreciate the video brother and can’t wait for the website to drop
Glad you're happy with it, Kevin. I'm really trying to get that website up by the end of July, but I've been saying that for almost a year now, lol. If you want the star template before then, just reach out through email again.
How much for the cross star template
Awesome jigs for sure. 👍🏼
Thanks brother!
hey bro i was wondering if you would sale the file I have 2 lasers and 3 cncs and would love to use this in my cross making. I follow your design and give the crosses to vets and sale them to those that want them. but give them out for free more.
Email me at maverickdesignswoodworking@gmail.com and we'll work it out.
I wish I had seen this video 2 days sooner. Just got some of the semi-transparent stain while it was on sale at Sherwin-williams. I've been trying to find a stain that will hold up better in the sun. People like to put them in the sun. Another flag maker at a show said they use oil-based and it holds up well. I plan on testing the 2 new formulas and oil-based. I do finish with total boat's halcyon for uv protection. The stains i've been using are Plaid's Ultra Dye, Transtint, unicorn spit, whitewash, and then recently just thining out paint. I also do a full burn and clean them off for my flags.
Well, the good news is you can still use that stain, it's just a pain to apply and get the results you want. I cover my technique in the first one of these 2 videos. As far as outdoor use, it's only going to be as good as the finish you use on it. I've never used the total boat stuff, but regardless of how effective it is, it will require constant maintenance like anything else. How constant is a matter of how good it is, but more importantly the level of harshness of the environment. Alot of direct sunlight will break anything down rather quickly.
Would love to purchase this jig if you still make them or have any. I cant find a website or link anywhere.
Absolutely. I've made and sold over 30 of them now. The final design is significantly more elaborate and elegant than the prototype in this video. I'm still working on the website, so I'm taking orders through email. Hit me up at maverickdesignswoodworking@gmail.com and we'll get you sorted out.
@@maverickdesignswoodworking I had just found your email address in the replies and sent you an email! Thanks!

Omg
Lol. I admire the dedication to your frustration.
Love your videos, but you talk too much. Sorry, just get to it
I'm sorry you feel that way. I'll continue to improve as I go, but it's impossible to please everyone. Thanks for watching.
Awesome! Congrats on the new bandsaw. 👍🏻
Thanks Dave! Got this last year, and it's a great saw.
My alexa was going nuts while I was watching this video. 😄
LOL. Yup! A couple others mentioned that as well. 🤣
Thank you for your service Tom.
It was my honor.
The saw came today and I'm currently putting it together. I was able to put my saw in the base with my best friend, Mr. two ton hoist (at 70 years old, hoists are a very good idea). It is definitely very heavy, my shipping label listed 149 kg (328 pounds), but once it's in the base, it glides beautifully. This video was a very big help.
I'm glad you found it helpful. There are some good tips for assembly, including a work around for a problem I had with mine, in the second part.
Beautiful flag. Have you tried putting in the keyhole slots using your CNC? That's how I do it.
Thanks! Back when I did this, I hadn't figured out how to do that on the CNC yet.
Just found your channel this morning and subbed. Great stuff. Love the flags and flag crosses. Hope you've built that jig by now. 😃
I did! There's a video on it. I've made and sold around 30 of them. Check out that video.
