    Legally you're supposed to have the most current version of the aircraft maintenance manual to perform the maintenance on the aircraft. Liability insurance if anything goes wrong is also super expensive. Sadly those two items can eat up all of your profit if it's just a side hustle

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit 15 часов назад

      The manuals will eat your profits very fast. I always suggest ATP HUB but depending on how many manuals you need it can eat all of your profits. I have been very lucky in the most of my clients keep a current manual for their aircraft, some of the others are available from the manufacturer for free, but to your point, yes. Also liability insurance is not required in texas and I was quoted 15k for a 1,000,000 dollar policy.

    Hello. Im 16 and a senior at high school. I'd like to get my A&P from a school. Im confused though on 3 ways to go about life after my A&P. I want to get a job at a small airline for a year then enlist in the marines/army to work on their aircraft and build up experience from both then work at a major airline. Not sure if thats possible or viable at all.

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit 20 часов назад

      I think it might be best to get your A&P first, obviously. Then join the Marines. I don't know if you plan on doing 2, 5, or 10 years but make sure you go into aircraft maintenance. Then when you go to a major airline you have that service on your resume. Just my 2 cents but I'll say this you have a much better plan then most guys your age. Go after with intensity and you'll be sitting pretty by age 26

    I am also an instructor at a 147 school, and have seen all kinds of tools. I have had good luck with the Icon line from Harbor Freight, stay away from Pittsburgh except for tools to cut, grind, and weld. I also really like Tekton tools. They are very nice tools at a very reasonable price, and also offer a discount for students. In my opinion Tekton is about 90% the quality of Snap-on, often at less than a quarter the price. However they are a bit limited in what they have, so you still can't buy everything from them. I always tell my students to spend the money on really good tools where it matters, like specialty tools for a specific reason, but for everything else that name is really just a status symbol, any decent quality tool will work fine. Agree that U.S. General tool boxes are great, especially the new Gen 3.

    You fogrot some HUGE expenses like liability insurance, taxes, and as an IA 'side job' you need (per the FAA) ALL the tools required to perform your job.... that's also thousands of dollars in tools. And you cal program must be documented, and you need A&D research...... side jobs are doable but you really, really really sugar coated it.

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit 2 дня назад

      In texas, you do not have to carry insurance (not saying that's a great idea, but many guys i know don't have a policy) As far as taxes go with deductions and expenses I'm not paying a crazy amount. You are right. Tools are expensive but total, including my jacks I've only spent about 2.5k but that's a one time cost (that obviously doesn't include everything like wrenches just the stuff necessary for an annual) The calibration every year runs me about $600. AD research is free on the faa website, just a pain to use. The most expensive thing is a subscription for manuals. I've been very lucky in that all of my clients keep current manuals for their planes and even more lucky the ones that don't are available from the manufacturer.

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit 2 дня назад

      Depends on the route you go. Some 147 schools cost as much as 45k. Others that are community colleges 15k. You can also take a job at a GA FBO and go the 30-month practical experience route. As far as the IA, I went to a crash course after I met my 3 year requirement that cost 1,400 for everything. Not saying that this is a great side business for anyone, but if you are already an A&P and work at like an engine shop or something, you could branch into it for a little extra cash.

      Depends allot on your situation. A 147 program is the fastest but will require your devotion to it full time, which makes keeping a job very difficult. The other way is to try and get a job without the A&P and then after 30 months apply to take the test and self study for it or go to a prep course/ crash course.

      I actually talked a bit about it in my last video but the short of it is. When I worked at the FBO the IA I worked with was offered a much better job in the training department of a 135 so he left. Him and I still stay in touch and I have helped him on several of his projects. I digress after he left I realized I needed to get my IA to take over his position as Shop Lead/ DOM. I tried to self study for the test but it was daunting so I ended up going to Bakers School Of Aeronautics in Tennessee. I will probably make a whole video on it tbh because the whole story was full of treachery I actually ended up getting in my first and only car accident the day I went to the FSDO.

    I have a friend that drives for a high-end race team in Europe. They concentrate on endurance series racing of 12hrs or more. I was walking the paddock at the Nurburgring about a month ago with him, and we were chatting casually with all of the different teams and I observed that one team had row after row of Sonic toolboxes. When I remarked that it was a pretty impressive display of tools, my friend laughed and pointed out that ALL of the teams were now using Sonic. He personally felt that SnapOn had slightly better torque wrenches, but that Sonic(s) approach to "tool control" with the foam trays, and tool identification was superior to SnapOn. Most of their stuff is made in Germany and Holland, and seemed like a really good quality for the money.

    Thanks for sharing your personal journey. I am soon to retire as an airline pilot, and am starting my A&P certification at a local Part 147 school next year. Your videos have been incredibly valuable to me. Thank you very much!

    Being a new aircraft owner, I really thought about doing my first annual as an owner, assisted one. This video got me rethinking that a bit only from the standpoint that, yes, I’m somewhat mechanically inclined because I’ve written the motorcycle or two that is needed stuff done to it, and as a kid of the 70s, everyone had a car that you had to tinker with at some point.but I must confess that wrenching is not a passion of mine, or something I necessarily look forward to doing. So that made me think maybe I would just be in the way. I would like to know where things are, panels work, how to remove a tire. But I’m not dying to do any of that. So it’s an interesting conundrum for sure. Anyway, new subscriber, and thank you for your content!

    You’ve got great friends, and incredible wife because their advice was spot on! This was a really great video, from the standpoint we got to know who you are a little bit in the aviation space. I really appreciate it, and I do watch your content, especially as a newairplane owner. Of course, maintenance is going to be pretty large on my radar screen, no pun intended, so folks like you who do what you do are very important to folks like me. But this video was definitely a breath of fresh air, and definitely fun to watch. Take care, and keep thriving!

    Thank you for the videos, they really help on my aircraft maintenance journey. I have one question, im about to graduate a part 147 school, and im not sure where to go after. I know you mentioned maybe wanting to have gone to a commercial airline after school, but are you happy with having gone into general? All ive ever worked on is general aircraft so thats what im drawn to, but some people have told me ill never make much money. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

      For me, working on general aviation is fun. But the company I worked for, for 6 years, at least the last year and a half that I worked there, very quickly became a place I did not want to work. It was all about, rush, rush, rush, and making the money over all else. If you find the right spot in general aviation, I’m sure it will be good. I got out and now I am in corporate. Making more for way less stress and not having to deal with my old employers BS.

      I love the airplanes and the community. The reason I sometimes feel I should have gone to an airline is because I want to see the world, and that would have opened that door. GA is all about who you work for you will meet some incredible people. There are also a handful of bad apples.

      IT is tough to figure out the best place and what to work on. I'd say OPEN up the dream part of your brain and think of the MOST interesting JOB that makes your heart race ! That impossible job ! Personally I love Cessna Caravans and the new 408 Would love to work on them and maybe fly them too MY wildest dream is to get some experience then go to Botswana Africa, where they use these planes to take tourists out to the game reserves. Check out BUSH PILOTS BOTSWANA ! There are camps there where foreign pilots live / waiting to see if they can land a pilot job. How interesting would it be if you had to check for elephants, lions, crocadiles, cows, hippos - before landing ! Little known fact, you can fly commercially overseas with 250 hours.

    You say that you would post less aviation videos because your side work will be more routine annuals, and that may not be interesting. I disagree! It is precisely those kinds of videos I want to see. For those of us in the field, seeing an 147 Instructor doing routine annuals would actually be very entertaining and informative.

      I teach everything but here lately have been doing a lot of PowerPlant. We have hired a few new guys, and since generals are easier, that is what we have had them focused on.

      @@brycebuildsit Very interesting Would you say the ''state' colleges and tech schools pay the lowest ? Friend of mine who I went to A&P school with me 25 years now teaches there but refuses to tell me how much he makes, he's in one of those $5,500 full course schools. I'm sure places like Embry Riddle pay great but want all kinds a certs and experience. Doubt schools like AIM, NATIONAL AVIATION pay much, they are just cert mills and don't teach shit but rip you off for $40,000 I think PP would be the best for me because I've built many automotive engines from a Chevy small block to an Alfa Romeo 4 cylinder - AN ENGINE IS AN ENGINE, no matter what it's used in. NOW, I know ZIP about turbines, NADA Could get interested in something like a PT6 though I am a Canadian too, I could work up there, I think the CAD is so low vs the us dollar the pay up there would be very low
