Lindisfarne, also called Holy Island (earliest name is Ynys Medcaut in Celtic - what is now the Welsh Language, as the Ango Saxons invaded from the east it drove the original Britons west, into Wales who some still speak a version of the original British Language), is a tidal island off the northeast coast of England, which constitutes the civil parish of Holy Island in Northumberland Aidan, th...
Welcome to Conisbrough 🏴

The name Conisbrough possibly comes from the Old English Cyningesburh (first recorded c. 1000) meaning "king's stronghold" or "king's fortified place" or also it's thought an ancient Britain "Conan" owned the land "Conan" and a seat of power "brough" It's a pretty little place in South Yorkshire, not far from the M1 More on Saint Peters Church in Conisbrough here - www.stpetersconisbrough.org/s...

The place where idiots queue up for hours to give Clarkson more money. Morons - mind you they probably all watched his TV programme. What on earth is the matter with them - quite depressing.
They mined for parmos in there, they supplied mamas pizza for years mate ;)
eston mines is a myth ;)
The name Arbeia has nothing to do with Arabs. It is a native British name, though it's meaning is unknown. None of the names in Britain are anything but local, except for a few obvious Roman Latin ones. The term Arab was not around at the time, & certainly not in Britain. The troops who occupied the fort were certainly not Arabs at any time. The very late Roman 'Tigres Bargemen' may not be the entire garrison, if it applies here at all. Certainly the fort held a normal Cohort, maybe supplemented by special river craft troops. The drains under the gateway foundations are just for the fort roads & roof run offs etc. At some stage half the gates were walled up as not needed. I don't think the rats came with the Romans. The many granaries were to supply the forts along the Wall, & maybe for moves into Scotland. The toilets would have had permanent flow of water through to keep them flushed & clean, out into the surrounding ditch, or downhill to the river.
Stonehenge has become a cash cow, and in my eyes is quite obscene. They should have left it as it was. The stones in the wall at Sarum are indeed flint nodules, and the flowers in the grass that you looked at aren't clover, they look more like Self heal. Sauron was the ruler of Mordor and wanted the ring, twasn't Sarum, but you did make me laugh. I've been to Avebury, I found it peaceful and rather lovely. And I had a great Aunt live in Burford. Am enjoying your Grand tour so far.
Thanks for letting me know. It was a grand day out as Wallace & Gromit would have said :-)
In the early 70s i spent many shifts driving a loading shovel we would take pit waste across and tip it into the sea which was always black in the summer we would have along lead in the winter storms the tip would disappear into the sea we would sè old men picking coal into bags then push tye bikes up the cliff face men would be on the beach with fires going on winter nights i was told the tip end best place for cod
Cheers for the comment, I remember in the Early 90s, just as the pit was being ran down, the huge dumper trucks going down to the beach, and the sea being black with waste coal (It's crazy how much coal was wasted, and here we are in a self made energy "crisis" in the UK). I love local stories, thanks for sharing.
Stone was taken from the fort for many a local building including St Paul church in jarrow
Interesting, Thanks for sharing. I think thats where most of Hadrien's wall went too, local building work. Thats a nice Church, with some of the oldest stained glass in Europe. I will be doing a video on that too when I get time.
Need to invest in audio app couldn’t hear so came out
I agree, This was when I was just using my phone, I have a proper camera now, you should see an improvment in picure & sound quality from what I have posted since May 2024.
@@ExploreWithTheElz Okies thanks for letting me know I’ll check it out ty.
Conisbrough is my home village! changed a lot since the 90's
I only saw a little of it, as it was a quick stop over on the longer journey, but it looked really nice the parts I saw. has it changed for the better or worse?
Love the Graffiti around Nottingham though. Also many small villages don't have things open on a Monday. plus it is cheaper too shut up shop than to have the place open with no customers. Folks open when there's good footfall about. There places might be also packed over the weekend which can then result in them being able to choose when to open up.
True, but what do people do on a Monday there?
@@ExploreWithTheElz they probably just have a night in ha
Nice one 🙂👍 Cauld, in this case, is pronounced 'card'. I'm really cold is said as I'm really card . Thanks for that, the tea rooms should be back open by now 🫖🍰😁
Cheers, we all have so many accents, even within 10 miles of Sunderland. I pronounce it "Cawld" but I was just writing it as I had seen it written in the past. im with you though, "caaard" sounds right, and on that day it was! thanks for commenting.
I discovered that village from a walk starting in Melsonby, last year. We didn't have the time to wander around A st J afterwards, your video shows that it's a lovely looking village (as they usually are around that area). Next time I'm coming back home via Scotch Corner I'll have a better look. Thanks very much for this video 🙂👍
Thanks for the comment Tony, if you get a nice day it really is beautiful and well worth a little stroll around. Like you say, the Richmond area is full of lovely little places.
Thanks for that, I can't believe that I've never noticed it! Cheers 👏👍
one thing i've learnt is if you have been somewhere many times, try a different route, go down the back street for a change and look about, you find all sorts that way. my channel is full if that kind of thing. Cheers!
@@ExploreWithTheElz Yes, definitely, that's what I do too. I've been regularly cycling and walking up and down the coast for many many years and I vary my route between the start and finish points and have indeed found many more features. I'm all for poking my nose into unknown nooks and crannies so I'll soon checkout your channel soon. Cheers 👍
I never call it "Holy Island" its ancient name of Lindisfarne is beautiful and good enough for me.
Thanks for showing us Holy Island. Lindisfarne appears to be a name of Scandinavian descent and a place where the Vikings first landed in England. It would have been interesting if you could have pointed out where the 'experts' think the Norsemen landed and where did they go? What did they do there? I got the impression the Vikings slaughtered some monks.
it isnt an impression, they destroyed the place and robbed it
The story goes they landed on Lindisfarne in the late 700's AD , killed and/or took as slaves the monks & stole the gold. and it was so easy, they kept coming back! there is no solid proof of this or when, as there are almost not written records & those that are were done by holy men so take it with the strong bias. there is a small gift and apology letter on the wall in St. Marys church from a group from Norway. There is surprisingly little facts on the subject, though they like to big up the christian & viking links to the tourists.
Thanks for showing Lindisfarne to us. Alas, it would have been interesting if you would have thrown some light on the Viking invasion of the abby. Where did they land and what did they do there? Seems to me that the very name of the island is of Scandinavian origin.
Farne is possible celtic (the local pre english language) or Norse (if it's the latter than surely theIt wouldnt have been included before the Viking raids, which apparently it was). i've added an english heritage link with a bit more history to the video below. :-)
Everyone loves cute cat videos, would you like to live on an island where all the cats are wild & outnumber them humans? Do you live in Cyprus?
Did you know of this place? what are you memories? ever seen a ghost here? If you live in the area, did you know about this place just off the A690 ?
Have you seen the film? have you visited Redcar?
What are your impressions of Tokyo? have you visited or live here?
What are your memories of Scarborough? good or bad?
Have you been to Holy Island? is so what did you like or dislike? did you get trapped by the tide?
The entra nice you found was for ventilation. Based on the global can design. The mountings you highlighted . The shafts was capped and bricked up as you can see. How with a hole.in. Drifts where to the right of were this is.
Thanks for the info!
The air intake found was an electric can housing for ventilation.
The random circle was a sports pitch built 20 years ago when the site was a collage
It was really a wonderful walk at Conisbrough! You've shared a great video, and I'm glad to watch it. The scenery was very beautiful, and the view was just fantastic!! Thanks for showing and sharing.
Eston Mines worked from 1850 to 1949 and produced some 63 million tons of ironstone. It was the creation of Teesside as a major iron, then steel, producing centre. The first collection of concrete remains was a small ventilating fanhouse for drawing air out of the mines; the second tunnel served the same purpose but had a much larger ventilating fan in front of it built there in 1869. The high stone wall was the base of a large steam engine house for hauling wagons along a railway from the Guisborough direction. Plenty of other remains can be seen when the vegetation is down. Several other sites had driftts, all now closed, where the ironstone was brought out.
Thanks for all the detail & knowledge
The bath thing was a sink from memory, that back section was part of the kitchens and the vaults were for storing food. About 10 years ago I met an old fella in his late 80s who was telling me all about it as he'd lived there all his life. Loads of those earthworks around the area and in the farm fields all contain parts of the castle. Sure that that standing section is the gatehouse
I was there too, and I see that you did the video on Sunday as I am in your background shot
Comment on cashless. I agree with you about being forced to pay by card. I went to a public toilet in Scarborough today, July 2024. On the seafront, South Bay, near this hotel. It cost 50p and it only took cash cards. When I got inside it, it was filthy. Not worth 50p and no way was the fact that no one can pay cash acceptable. No receipt was given either. It said the door opened automatically after 5 minutes but I didn't wait that long! There was a button to release the lock on the door but it took several attempts to get it to work!
I can’t agree more with you it’s a cracking hotel for the money
Can you tell where those places are?
in the Katos area of Paphos, some in the old town, but all in Paphos.
Nice having the pool
Again a beautiful place on our doorstep. Haven't been here for years.
An excellent video showcasing Brough Castle, so cool! Wouldn't mind a trip there at some point. Love that it was built on a roman site beforehand, such incredible history. Thank you for sharing
Fantastic, never knew about this treasure. Thanks for introducing me to it.
Those windows do open
Great video. Beautiful place x
Like to go again last time i was there was 2004 with school on a trip , fantastic x

sorry?
Might be interesting but can't hear commentary most of the time
sorry, shot on my phone, impromptu, I have camera now, better stabalisation. thanks for the feedback.
Cool ass place Scarborough is though. Should experience it when goth week is on that is a site to behold.
Scarborough have a goth weekend too? I thought it was just Whitby (they have 2, one in the spring and one in the autumn).
@@ExploreWithTheElz sorry I got my areas mixed up. Haha
super review of the hotel, thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it
For £73 ya definitely not being robbed. Old history and a great view of the ocean. I can imagine this place being haunted as fck. Ha
bad video!! After 3 minutes my head turn like I'm drunk!
Thanks for the feedback, it was only recorded on my phone, im intending on getting a better camera.
Positive review of a cool old Hotel I agree too but filming and sound quality awful especially out in the windy street. But well done for trying mate.
I agree Thanks for the feedback, it was only recorded on my phone, im intending on getting a better camera and using better mufflers.
Was in week day or weekend when noone was in the room ?
If I remember right it was Thursday until Monday I think.
Nice
At the beginning of the video, those are salt scar rocks. The petrified forest is further down the beach nearer the cinema. Redcar is my hometown and its lovely on a nice day ❤
Also the forest is only really visible after storms 😢
Thanks for the info!
Yes, I remember, the tide has to be REALLY low to see it. Thanks for sharing. :-)
@@ExploreWithTheElz yeah but it’s super interesting to see it when the sand has shifted after a big storm, you should visit again after the next storm uncovers it 😊
very beautiful place and the church is quiet and calm, complete peace
Its lovely, well worth a visit if in the area , especially on a summers day.
