Edison Amberola 1A: "You're a Grand Old Rag"
Most people do not know that the original title of George M. Cohan's hit song was "You're a Grand Old Rag." That proved to be so controversial that it was soon changed to "Grand Old Flag." This early rendition was released by Edison in April 1906. It is being played on a late 1909 / early 1910 Edison Amberola 1A, which was a very upscale machine for its time, priced at a lofty $200 (over $5,000 in today's inflationary dollars). It could play both 2 minute and 4 minute records, and featured storage for 100 records as well as an automatic shutoff. The sound quality of the properly restored Model 'M' reproducer can't be rivaled.

This recording of the song “La Fée Verte” was performed by a famous singer of the era in Paris, Adophe Bérard (“of the Eldorado”), with a song written by Émile Spencer. It was recorded on a black wax Edison cylinder circa 1906. The song was one small part of a very large campaign to demonize the drink Absinthe, which was the single most popular alcoholic beverage in France (and some other parts...

Edison Fans

Three Edison fans of the 1890s: six-blade bi-polar, Ironclad, and four-blade bi-polar. Two small corrections: the Ironclad was not changed to ball bearings in 1898, when the bi-polar styles were. It retained sleeve bearings however that was the year that the motor in the Ironclad was redesigned with cylindrical commutator instead of flat, and the rear window was eliminated. The speed was 1000 r...

Fascinating - never seen one, not even in a museum or older mansion.
Rene fantastic demonstration over 200 people turned up for your public exhibition i can here da audience really enjoying da different voices and to be able to capture it on your Tinfoil Phonograph it's as good if not better sound quality of a brown wax cylinder I'm fascinated with Tinfoil Phonographs would love some day buy John kruesi Tinfoil Phonograph replica i have a Goodwin Ive Tinfoil Phonograph it's not as dear as John kruesi is $5,000 thanks for sharing this video demonstration 👌🇮🇪👍
Hi Rene outstanding voice Recording and a great video you have a beautiful collection your obsession with Tinfoil Phonographs and your incredible knowledge I bought your book that you wrote on Tinfoil Phonographs outstanding read I would love to have your Autograph on a picture with you doing a voice Recording I'd pay for it if your interested as I'm very keen Edison Phonograph collector I done a voice Recording on my Goodwin Ive Tinfoil Phonograph on RUclips and came out quite well now our son who is 5 he's name is Lennon and he's obsessed with Edison Cylinders listening away to music coming out horns ha ha all da best from Ireland 🇮🇪 😀
Rene I absolutely love your coin operated machine in superb condition sounds amazing I hope to buy one some day I just bought Edison Opera I waited year's for it ha ha great video thanks for sharing 👍 😀👌🇮🇪
Fantastic! An intersection of genius and madness. A beautiful horn on it too.
I thought it was going to take off when you put the speed to high.
This car ( or one similar) is in a Clive Cussler book I've read!
Amazing!
Hard to imagine living without electricity or common appliances. While I'd be interested in visiting the past, I wouldn't want to live there. This fan sounds insanely powerful though.
It's crazy how we basically use the same light socket even to this day, even if the method of switching it on/off is different.
I imagine this would have been in a bar or hotel room back then. The edison machines usually were in lobbies and phonograph parlors, but they used headphones as not to disturb everyone else, but this one has a horn implying it was to entertain several people.
Never even thought about this idea,so neat,now I want one,thanks for sharing😮
A most beautiful machine!
Could I use this on 115 volts? And where can I find such a devise??
When do they chop the queen's head off? 🐸

incredible! Who is the inventor of this engineering?
Hello sir, I have a same machine but missing some parts for the coin operator, is it possible if you can send me the photos for the coin operator so I can know what parts are missing? Thank you so much
Well, that's pretty cool. Make a video with some good 70's rock played through it.
You should consider a modern compressor or at least a modern drive motor for the compressor. The compressor is extremely loud going by the video. Also, you could regulate the air better for quieter amplification.
Very nice❤❤
You sir have an amazing collection.
Dangerous, vintage, electric fan
Very nice machine Rene! A concert grand that could convert to playing standard two minute cylinder records. Not even Edison could have come up with that?
Extremely beautiful and rare! That must be the largest motor fitted to any acoustic phonograph.
Must sound marvelous! Have any other tunes for it?
Nice machine! what song is it?
You would think a commercial machine would be much better built and use a better cylinder yielding better performance. There is no reason the cylinder couldn't be 3 times the size. The only down side would be having to re-record a new master at the bigger size.
Last fan said self oiling, what does that mean ? did it have oil already in it somehow ?
I have one, including a spare motor (in its original wooden box). Tried it once and the thing nearly caught fire.
I can see why this didn't take off
Wow Dc fans were THAT OLD
the blades are perfectly balanced which is amazing for such an old fan. What a beauty.
It's very quiet. Why don't they have those now?
Tin
Incredibile!!!
Near death experience
That's a beauty.
The only Bettini item I have ever obtained in my 45 years of collecting is a original Bettinii horn. Nice Columbia AD machine, thanks for sharing!
so it's a 2 speed
Thanks...
I bet that's expensive!
I suspect this would do much better on a Triumph.
Seems the price of a 1A has not changed!
Beutiful yet the rattling sounds makes it unusable.
4.5V DC - almost identical to USB power!
10/10/10
Thanks Rene for the explanation on its operation , Have one here that I could not understand how to wire for low and high . \
One of the Most Famous Cars from the days of Early Race Cars. I started reading about it when I was 10 years old!! This is the first time I've ever seen it coming to life. I have 50 year old post cards of this car. You made my day!!! 🎩🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸🎩
