Getting Doored and Bike Safety (ChiWhoBike #55)
Definitely Chicago Bike paths are prettier Specially you're on the path to south which is Amazing!! That's my Fav reaching out 163 street and beyone :) Have fun :)
I love your story and advice. I'm in the process (could take until spring) of re-tubing and re-tiring my older bike so I can ride again. It makes me feel better, gives me another mode of transportation that doesn't cost as much money to fix as a car and I can get most of my errands done when then weather is warmer. Bikes are much healthier and easier to maintain than a car... thanks for your inspiration.
American society in general is built around 🚗. The rest of the world is not. public transportation is a must in Europe, Asia, South America .
Well that was cool. AND ueah SUV and pickup truck drivers are often aggressive. And just keep getting more dangerous. They stopped being about transportation years ago.
Oof, I know exactly what you mean about it being difficult living in a cycling unfriendly city; that's my situation currently. I still love getting around by bike, but it can feel rather dangerous, arduous, and just generally like your presence wasn't expected outside of a car. Maybe someday I can move somewhere friendlier too :-)
Fitment of your bike is so important!

I'm am an American cyclist who lives in England ( I have two Raleigh bikes , 1939 & 1983 ones) . I agree with what your saying , it's not very different over here , car drivers have become more aggressive, so much so that I now will only ride on roads that have no physical separation for car/bike road users if I'm in a group (safety in numbers). Happy biking 😊
This past spring, I returned to cycling after a 20+ year layoff. I had my bikes overhauled, and I added two more to my stable; I now have four bikes. Anyway, after getting back in shape and learning the bike again, I feel confident enough to use my bike for short trips vs. using my car. I don't see myself getting rid of my car any time soon (public transport in my area sucks!), but I do see myself using my bike more for local trips.
I'm glad that you've rediscovered cycling. You'll be much better off for it.
Love this! If anybody is looking for southside rides check out South Side Critical Mass, the Major Taylor group, and Streets Calling.
Another great one! Biking is such a fun and convenient way to get around a city; ya just get the exercise for free 😂
My bicycle is an integral part of my existence.
I still suck very bad at driving a car & I really don't feel bad about that!! I definitely hate to learn how drive a car & I also hate to take drivers education in high school!! I always & forever dangerously in 💞💞 & obsessed with biking everywhere because I totally realize that is a form of my transportation & it definitely save my life & my mental health!! I lost my ex girlfriend from epilepsy seizure in 2021!! I also lost the 💞 of my entire life my momma Remonia Simmons to cancer in 2021 3 years ago!! Last year I also lost my half brother on my mother's side in his sleep!!
Love how ambient and random this is - shows you don't have to be some uber-bije-pro = JUST RIDE YOUR BIKE AND CHILL - HE doesn't talk about it but seems to me he's kind of using biking to have a chill meditative type experience - he's right about the cost safety ratio - I split the difference by using an Escooter - I have a car but I don't use it = cost more to operate it than it's worth - I did the math = in Michigan (thanks to insurance cost ) owning, operating and maintaining maintaining an old car is minimum $6 thousand dollars a year over a 3 year period AND that's for an older car!! All to keep shareholders profits up = Fight back and join the personal mobility movement!
great thanks
this is great thanks
"When I know the person who was hit was a really good cyclist....that scares me a bit." I couldn't have put it any better.
I prefer Lawrence over Montrose for East/West travel because There are points where Montrose has me closer to the parked cars than I would like. Either will work though. I wish there was something to be done about Wilson between Western and the river. It's the only thing that keeps Wilson from being my top choice. Too tight and often crowded.
Have you tried Leland? It’s one-way East from the river until Lincoln Square where it becomes two way. It’s undergoing a project to enable Westbound travel for bikes right now. There’s also Ainslie/Argyle/Winnemac but that’s less straightforward. I prefer both quiet routes to the higher risk Lawrence lane

@@weenisw I'm very much looking forward to the completion of that project. Going west on Leland legally will be next useful.
You don’t lubricate your bike?
Love this channel. I am building the LA version of this right now.
Are you Beta as well? Otherwise, it won't be the same.
Everything is race, even bikes
Indians developed a horn language, so they actually can communicate in cars
The worst part about representing cyclists has to be listening to them talk about being cyclists. I’m sure attorneys that special in CrossFit, vegan or atheist law encounter the same stuff. Can’t go thirty seconds without hearing about it.
It's plain to me that lots of people and drivers are not going to see it like this. Bikes are like a kid's type nuisance to them, being in the way on the street and jamming them up for the driving. The only protected bike lanes I ever see where I live are an incidental matter where a wide sidewalk happens to be that's expected to be used for bikes and walkers, or a converted path that just happens to be up on the curb. They never take steps for protection or separation where they're creating something. I think most governments are like that too, not wanting to build anything.
Exactly! When people begin seeing biking as a viable form of transportation, and not just leisure, change will happen.
That looks like a really nice bike to ride!
Urbanism icon!!!
Seems like you overcame some real obstacles, especially from whatever that condition was you were making reference to ("in an out of your body working properly") and the wheelchair times. I've always just taken for granted that I could ride bikes however, or run, or do whatever kind of PT as a wished to. I did wrongly conclude at one point in the last few years that getting back to regular running was a no-go and that I was going to have to stick to cycling. That being based on my old ACL/knee state and that I was 20 pounds over high school weight. But after ramped up road bike cycling for about nine months, and all through winter, my weight was way below my high school weight again, and I felt so fit again that running seemed more approachable once again. So that part has similarities. Your body is highly adaptable, but sometimes you forget how much so.
Love biking through here! Horner park is also nearby (through manor greenway) and gets you all the way to the channel trail.
I LOVE the new riding format! Also, you are a wizard for getting such great audio with zero wind noise.
i live in london and id say a good 80% of bikers are not white
are you joking? lmao the majority of cyclists are people of color, now if we're talking competitive cycling in america, the majority of cycling is not people of color, but this video isnt on that topic, also there is a matter of perception, chicago might not have the same cycling scene as atlanta, where i live, where the largest cycling group i know is all black riders (im not black so, i was unable to join them. -_- ) america isnt part of the global cycling league really, we have our own cycling institution but, its laughed at by the rest of the world. I could easily ride down to mexico, where cycling culture is very strong regardless of what bike you ride, the problem isnt a lack of people of color riding. the problem is people under a certain income level cant invest in themselves as easily.
Are joking? You seem confused.
I'm really not sure what you're on about or what I just read!
I make bike content in Seattle, no he is not Joking, I rarely see people of color on bikes. Majority white males...facts not opinion. Majority of cycling you tube is white folks. Shouldn't be a big deal to acknowledge that.
So this was on the right side of the road? He parked askew a bit, then immediately opened the left side door and never saw you until it happened? About the only time I get really close to someone's door seems to be when I'm coming up to a light in the normal lanes (for straight or left turn) and passing close to get to just behind the lead car. I prefer doing this with the road bike and it's slimmer profile. But in that case, there's little reason for them to open the door, unless they're dumping the ashtray out or pouring out a soda or something like that. So I feel Ok with it.
🐐🐐🐐🐐
Know a few cyclists that have got hit in my area, theyre usually pushing their times in public places and take an intersection too fast and cant slow down. Its much less of a problem if youre not trying to keep up with your pb.
Exciting to see so many views on this. Totally agree, biking is faster. It would be even faster with fewer cars in the way!!🚲🛴
