Such inspiring words! Thank you.
Not a cargo bike, its a moped.
Lol ok
The Chicago accent has changed a lot in the years since I’ve been back! 😂
Having an e-bike to climb hills with a load of groceries and other shopping is a game changer.
I think that biking on the south side is better than in many north side neighborhoods, at least in terms of traffic volume. The whole city has jerks behind the wheel, but the level of entitlement I encounter on the south side is much lower than places like Lincoln Park.

Smart. When I take my friends on rides the hate me😂😂
Well 99% of people moving about are in cars, so there's that.
Yield signs and improved street design would be more efficient than stop signs.
Great interview! I love these more small-scale local discussions, it’s great for grass-root change.
She is such a sunny person! Thanks for the story.
I left Chicago 25 years ago after growing up in Lakeview. Clark and Roscoe used to be all Asian restaurants. Glad to see bikes are used for basic transport. Never used to see that.
Good for him. And you might live through a 1 mile commute. Mine is 8 miles and I gave it up when a failure to stop right on red SUV nearly killed me when I was crossing Harlem and Milwaukee. Chicago has almost nil infrastructure. It's scary. I just returned from Vienna and have biked Copenhagen and you can feel safe in either of those cities. Chicago will never be safe. Our leader cares a thousand times more about extracting fines than about biking safety. Our bike lanes are a a joke- lines painted on a bike gutter. No physical protection. Wanna cross an intersection? Who's going to kill you? The cross traffic? The turners? The monster truck or SUV who can't see you? I'd say the only safe place to ride in the city itself is the lakefront bike path and the forest preserves- both delightful. My favorite way to show foreigners our city is to have my wife drive us down to Stagg field. We check out all the architecture on the U of C campus, work our way over to Rainbow Park and take the bike path north to downtown. Riding on a nearly deserted bike path with the Lake on one side and the skyscrapers getting ever larger in the distance is one of the better scenic rides anywhere. On a hot day you can take a dip in the Lake. My favorites secret Chicago site is the Balbo column hidden next to the bike path. Where else in Chicago can you see a 1st century Roman column and the inscription "in the 11th year of the Fascist era?" It's a great reminder of the evanescent vanity of our politicians. Wife will pick us up anywhere before Navy pier and safely take us home.
Quite inspirational. The older I get the more I like bike commuting as a kid I didn't realize the benefits, and did it just because I had to. I also didn't enjoy the pain, but now I do(muscle fatigue) and I can understand all the mental+physical benefits it bestows upon me.
good interview. thx for the content
This video is a great illustration of Chicago as "the Windy City," as I thought she might be blown into the river behind her, but anyways, cute gal nevertheless, and I only wish she'd briefly described the bike she'd purchased by giving us an overview and to perhaps have learned what kinds of bike tools/accessories have worked best for her in her commuting experience. Curious also whether it's an e-bike.
We know it's just a non-electric bike, and she decked it out with a basket and the rear rack!
I don't live in Chicago but I am an avid cyclist. I just wanted to tell you that I love your channel. It is very enjoyable to just sit and listen to people talk about something that I am very passionate about. Thank you!
The milwaukee bike lane is a prime example of the worst infrastructure a city can offer.
Whats that accent?
Great video! You shouldn’t tell people where your kids go to school tho!!!! There’s not nice people in this world
Cars are just inefficient. If I could choose, I would just get rid of my car. But there are no good alternatives.
People tell me I shouldn't ride on the roads because I could get killed, but I'd rather die than give it up. I'm thinking about giving up my car as it is such a huge expense and a hassle sometimes. I like her baskets. A basket and a cargo net are must-haves for me. I really enjoy carrying things on my bikes.
Agreed. With good winter tires you can ride 99% of the year. As Molly said, on the days it's not safe to bike it's not safe to drive either. The city could be better about clearing the bike lanes of snow. There's also the issue of people pushing snow from the sidewalk into the bike lanes.
There's so much potential for Lakeview to be a neighborhood where you can bike in comfort and safety. Broadway and Halsted should be car free. I love that there was an organic example of how biking can nurture your connections with your neighbors or fellow city dwellers because you're not in a big metal box. Wild how in your clip there's more people on bikes at Roscoe & Clark than cars. Roscoe needs some diverters to reduce through traffic. Reducing the number of cars on side streets is just as important as slowing them down. Thanks for letting me know another benefit of bubbles. 💡
What a great interview! I love that the red and green line construction workers come out with their stop signs to keep the bike bus safe! ❤
I love that you guys are helping to promote bike advocacy in Chicago. Cars destroy cities.
Thank you. Been a commuter and tourer for 23 years. Through Edmonton winters, Vancouver, Taiwan, Glasgow. Such an important and valuable part of my life. Love hearing stories like this from veteran cyclists.
Great piece! Very informative and articulated! 👏🏻🚲
Bless you and your courage
The discussion about anger and cagers was amazing! Why can't they see how miserable driving is making them?
❤️❤️❤️
I have never owned a 🚙 and I really don’t know how to drive. I really never had an interest in doing so. But I do 🚲 everywhere or take public transportation. I’m really glad to know that I’m not alone in a completely 🚙 free life! Great interview!

I used to live in Chicago - would ride my bike daily, (except winter) LSD and Irving Park road and would ride my bike along Sheridan and LSD trail north through Highland Park/Loyola to Winnetka return. Living out on West Coast and now want to return. Chicago Metro Pass and a bike is all i need.
Good onya sister! Party on.🙂
Is bike commuting a common occurrence in the United States?
It varies by location but it tends to be about 1% of transportation mode share. It is steadily increasing thanks to lots of infrastructure being added since 2013 and a corresponding cultural shift.
I notice it all the time, distracted driving. I should be able to see the drivers' eyeballs, but instead I see their eyelids... Phone in hand... Does not matter if it's and old car with no Bluetooth, or a hypercar that costs millions with all the tech in the world... Phone in hand.
We love her
The fact that we still need to tell people to "look up", focus and be aware of their surroundings while driving a 2+ ton automobile is absurd and frightening. I'm really loving all these interviews, I wish there were more videos like this from everywhere in the world. My only constructive criticism is please show us more of the bike during the interview. I know it's not the point, but I really wanna see more of the fuji 😅
Words of wisdom
Since retirement my car was using half of my income and had become a huge liability so i sold it, and replaced it with 2 bikes. I can relate to all that she shared as a full time biker now.
She is wise beyond her cycling years!!!
Ride on!
Hahah, 1993 for me…
So 120% increase so the city really needs to move forward with protected concrete barriers. You know they really need to move forward with that take away one lane it’s only gonna make the city look better and make more investments happen more often in the city.
How do you know where to rent a place in Chicago though cause you don’t wanna be in a bad neighborhood so how do you know where to go? I’m from Northern Maine. How do I know where to rent?
Anywhere with a college is gonna be great. Rogers is great, Edgewater, Lakeview, river north, Lincoln and Wrigley are all safe places. They vary in price. Rogers and Edgewater can be cheaper.
There's also a good reddit post on r/askchicago that goes over all the different neighborhoods
I learned you don't want a car in Chicago on my only visit...
More power to this lady. The way she speaks reminds me of the way we _used_ to speak to one another. Thinking ahead of what to say and how to say it; not being afraid of a brief silence while she thought/articulated. Wish that would make a comeback.
