Dashing Dan's Trains
США
Добавлен 28 мар 2022
Dashing Dan's Trains is my channel for people who want to learn about using technology with O gauge model railroading, and follow my journey of building a layout in a brand new location.
I have been an O gauge model train collector for years after doing it with my father and grandfather when I was younger.
Moving into a house soon I have the rare occasion of sharing with youtube the process from beginning to end of building a layout. Additionally as a software developer by trade, I will attempt to implement technologies such as CMRI and JMRI as part of my layout and show you how along the way.

6:03 I think that 5th whistle is supposed to be the air whistle that the caboose uses when it reverses
What I like about Lionel is they make sets of lesser known railroads.
Bro, please stop moving the camera back and forth so much and so fast. We're going to get motion sickness and not be able to watch. Get a camera stand/mount of some kind and gently move from one "scene" to another.
you could say that nicely
Nice set! Love the color
Great review! Like the unboxing music. We tend to model what we see. "Big ups 👍 from Chicago "Train Dawg "!
Nice set . Looks nice running with the number it passenger cars that it comes with . I like Horn # 4 and the Bell that it comes with
Great set!! Thanks for sharing it.
Nice showcase of this set. I couldn't tell but are the pilots on the locomotive kinematic or fixed? The trucks didn't look like they were attached to the pilot.
Thanks! The engine does have kinematic pilots
@@dashingdanstrains no problem and thanks for the clarification.
Reason for the hancock whistle is because the RBMN 426 now RBMN 5033 used to have a hancock whistle on it. I don't know why the railroad added it. But when i was working there before going to BNSF. When the unit was renumbered back to 5033. I think it was removed then and back in freight service more sitting in the deadline at Penobscot.
Deeble is Correct, the whistle is not on the 5033 (426) anymore.
I'm fortunate to live 25 minutes from Jim Thorpe, so I can go see the gorge train anytime I want. I wanted to get this set from lionel, but RBMN repainted the blue cars years ago. It's not the current scheme, which is why I struggled whether or not to get this set. In the end, I passed on it. It's still a gorgeous and I wish you many years happiness with it.
Thats cool! I was curious why when i rode the train it didn't have the scheme that this train was. That makes sense now! It would've been nice if the 2 add on cars were the red scheme thats current
Really nice set!
Thanks!
The strange horn I believe is the air whistle that the caboose has when they run the train backwards. They use to operate that train in a push pull service and the caboose would need a warning whistle, hence the sound.
@@DJHProductions ah cool! I didnt know that, that makes sense though
There also an aux 3 feature that has the station master at Jim Thorpe telling people to stand behind the yellow line. It’s a pretty cool set. Only issue I had is for whatever reason they skipped car #214. They did 211, 212, 213, 215, 216, little strange. Also for your reference the R&N stopped running this version of this train around 2015 era, and just replaced it with their R&N fleet with their GP-40 diesels. Last time I was there I think all of the blue cars have finally been painted red, they lingered for a while though. Enjoy!
Reason for the hancock whistle is because the RBMN 426 now RBMN 5033 used to have a hancock whistle on it. I think it was around 2015 it was added. It was a separate valve to control that whistle while the horn valve was on the control stand itself.
The whistle on the cabooses is just a simple air whistle not that one on the set.
Cool Set!!
Great vid
Really nice set. Love the colors
Thank You! really glad Lionel got the colors right!
Wow what a great set! Great add to your collection man thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you!
Very cool set!
Thank you!
Nice
Thank you!
Hi could you list the items so I can buy them to make these thanks
@JimSmith-j9u thanks for watching! A breakdown of all the parts with the links are in the description of the video.
Thats great i loved and remember the amtrak commercial !
Very nice.. I have the Mth 5 car set and some Williams. I need the proper engine but I run the Mth 559 Amtrak with them.
Dang it, I want some O Scale Superliners now!
Speaking of the double decker type cars, the Arizona Railroad Museum in Chandler, Arizona. Has some original double decker cars from the Santa Fe (AT&SF) and you can walk through them! Their beautiful cars
This is great now I can repair my trains👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very nice good information
Wry nice my o gauge friend
there also is METRA/METRO coaches like those too
getting those double deck coaches through a tunnel is the biggest challenge. the 2 on my layout they may just fit by a tiny margin. it depends on the coach height. chrome plated ones look best, but they all look rather good.
I am glad to see such variety in the Superliner cars. I model the Santa Fe Railroad from the end of steam to the beginning of the diesel era some Superliners other than a model of the old first generation Santa Fe high level Budd built cars would be out of character on my layout. But anyone modeling the modern Amtrak era with a western route they would look great. As for VIA I hope they can keep the old dome car Canadian running for as many years as possible. I got to ride a few dome car trains when Amtrak first started and miss that forward view from the dome car. My favorite ride was near the end of the Rio Grande Zeypher runs going through those Colorado mountains.
VIA did seriously consider buying Superliners, but ultimately declined. Also, you showed Amfleet/Viewliners running in the end segment, instead of Superliners.
Cool video! I have a couple of MTH Superliners and a K-Line Transition Sleeper. My Bi-level cars are Chicago commuter cars Metra and Rock Island from MTH's 2011 run with CNW being K-Line. Also have a couple of Golden Gate Depot Viewliner cars. "Big Ups👍 from Chicago "Train Dawg"!"
The california does exist they run mostly out Sacramento
Are all GGD Superliners 21"? They don't have lengths on the website/order form.
@drtbgd theyre all the same length, he didnt make different sizes so they should all be scale at slightly under 22 inches
@dashingdanstrains Thank you.
If Lionel had made their Superliners in 21" length, the Golden Gate Depot versions would be irrelevent. Lionel had them right, tinted windows and all else, just no sale length offered. The windows on the K-line are just to big and square with stark interiors. The Williams scale length cars were ahead of their time. I own a set an although I have GGD cars now, the Williams remain in my collection.
I have the first edition 6-car Williams set of 15" Superliners bought when new (# SL600), since at the time I didn't think I'd ever have enough room for 072 curves. Well, years later that changed somewhat, so now I not only still have those (since I've never run them🙄), but I have 15 MTH Premier cars in Ph.IV, a 4-pack of K-Line 18" cars (2x coaches, diner + sleeper) and 4 Lionel coaches (plus another Lionel 4-car set I bought sight unseen at York that turned out to be a Ph.II version). I basically went nuts with Superliners after I decided I was going to model the _Auto-Train_ . Crazy, I know. :D To that end, I also started acquiring the MTH 75' Auto-Train autoracks (modeled on the old CN cars), amassing 10 of the Phase IV, 2-4 of the Ph.III cars (never used after I decided to concentrate on Ph.IV and up) and two more in a fictional CSX scheme that I had custom-painted into Phase V. Put together with nine of my MTH Superliners, modified with LED lighting since the stock incandescent bulbs pulled a half-amp _per car_ , and I ran the consist with a four-motored Williams Genesis pair: ruclips.net/video/UQTmqdmNDu8/видео.html (Bear in mind that the above effort played out over the course of ten-ish years starting in the mid 00's) I haven't been able to run that particular train since (time constraints and too much other stuff to run), but in the meantime I've added six more of the 75' autoracks, this time a factory Phase V release, three more "trilevel" cars that MTH released in a Ph.V scheme imitating the AVC's used today, and twin MTH Genesis units, the last ones they released before conveying the tooling to AtlasO. I know the emphasis in this video is on the scale or close-to-scale SL's, but I have a couple of curiosities regarding the MTH versions: (1) their RailKing 15" cars modeled a Superliner 1 truck. Premier cars have trucks more like the SL-2's (2) the Premier cars have squat toilets in the lower level bathrooms (the engineers in China must've went with what they knew), but you can't see them unless you remove the shell 🚽😁. I discovered this during my LED upgrade.
@RailRide I'm extremely jeolous, I've been trying to collect those phase VI autoracks but they are very hard to find, im going to have to check out that vide you posted!
@dashingdanstrains i got lucky with the Ph.V cars...I had them pre-ordered thru a friend (he did most of the subway-set voiceovers and supplied much of the documentation that allowed them to make almost all of their subways, and as such was granted the privilege of being able to order directly thru them). Unfortunately, he was stricken with brain tumors in early 2019 and passed away that same year...the year those cars were to be delivered. When I found his wife canceled his orders, I had to do a thorough search of the dealer network and finally found a six-pack at Nicholas Smith. Given the circumstances, I was very lucky to score them.
Amtrak should make more superliners instead of liberty acela 2
Grreat video ❤ ny central superliners😊
bro's living the superliner dream
How do you have the camera follow you?
It's a feature of the gimbal I used, it didnt work as well as I'd like it to 😆 going forward ill have to turn off follow when I dont actually need it to follow me.
@@dashingdanstrains haha yeah it was funny watching it move when you lifted up one of the superliners lol
Yupp...thats what i get for buying an off brand gimbal 😂
Very nice! Those big, E units are just plain cool. I'm a big passenger train guy and I like running them the most on my layout. You have some great ideas for your layout. Subways and lower-levels add a real neat dimension to the operations. An excellent video, for sure.
Nice!I subscribed
Nice video!
What a great collection!!! I put an order in for the golden gate depot phase vi superliners, can’t wait to get them!!
I have never seen a video with all the superliners in one place! great vid, even better collection!
Nicely done!
Thanks!
VIA rail superliners!? I didn’t even know you liked VIA 😂 Great video
Via? Never heard of it
😯
This was a really Cool and informational Video Dan.👍🏻🚂 What about Right-of-way industries?
@railchief74 thanks! Im not aware of right of way making any superliners. Overland made 2 rail superliners, those i dont have since i cant run em on my layout
Nice coverage Dan. The Amttak California Superliner actually does exist. After Amtrak California took delivery of the California Cars, they also repainted a couple of Superliner Cars in Amtrak California colors to add to the equipment pool. They are still in use today but are eventually being replaced by the Seimens Venture cars
Thanks!!! I had no clue those exist!!
Every now and then one or two cars make their down south to run withe surfing cars. Basically almost every car in California is owned by the state dot but operated by Amtrak if it's not a long distance train
I have the Alaskan set. Only issue is I'm missing 2 of the curved glass windows on 605. Do you have a source for Superliner parts? I've tried Lionel, Trainz, and a couple others but no luck. Thanks and nice video.
@Glenn_Mead unfortunately your only option would be to buy a 2nd car, or searching at train shows, i checked where id usually get them also and theyre not in stock. Good luck!
If any of the remaining windows are loose and replacements are _completely_ unavailable, you might try casting a copy with silicone rubber made for moldmaking. Basically, you build a box big enough to contain the window with one edge even with the top (with a decent amount of space around it), secure it so it stands up in the center, then pour the liquid silicone (with hardener added) all around the window casting, filling the mold box till it's even with the top of the window casting (the exposed edge is to give you a means of extracting the window). Once the silicone is cured, you extract the window, leaving a window-shaped cavity in the rubber. Next you would mix up a small batch of clear casting resin (also mixed with its hardener according to directions), pour it into the mold and let it cure. This should produce a copy of the original. I'd check out a number of videos on the subject of silicone rubber moldmaking (with a particular eye toward two-part molds owing to the curved glass if you're unable to get it to stand upright on its edge) to familiarize yourself with the process.
Those Superliners are sharp, but I really like how you go through each version that was released over the years. Great work.
