Chum Kiu on the beach in Iceland
When I was in Iceland in July I came back from a day climbing volcanos in the Westman Islands (you can see them on the horizon in this clip) and my old friend Gudrun and I went for a walk on the most beautiful black beach near the Herjolfr harbour.
Mind blowing and not bad surf actually (bloody cold despite being mid summer though!))
I was fully rugged up and it occured to me that a little Chum Kiu was in order 😁
First in Iceland? First Wing chun form in Iceland?
Unlikely, however boxing was actually banned there until the late 50’s and only recent has martial arts taken off, so who knows.
Hope you enjoy it!

Chi cultivation Absolutely should be part of your Wing Chun practice!

Cultivating Chi, the life force, is an essential part of advancing in Wing Chun, once you've got past the fundamentals. People don't do it because firstly they disbelieve its existence, and / or they think that it's an impossibly high skill reserved for the very very rare few Masters. Ask any Chinese kung fu person and they will tell you that it absolutely exists and that without it you're not ...

BEAUTIFUL SPRINGTIME - The name sums up the Art!

Chinese friends of mine have told me that there's no connection between the name and any kind of meaning to do with spring or Chi rising. Chi may be that elusive ingredient. It may not come for every enthusiast but understanding that is real is made acceptable once it has been experienced. Then it may seem more elusive but will fuel your hunger . My experience from sigung was in 1996 . Training with Susanna in Hong Kong one afternoon. Her chi sau was magnificent . We were the only two at his apartment and CST was watching us closely. Then he stood behind me with what felt like four finger tips lightly touching my spine slightly below my shoulder blades. I couldn’t feel and physical change. However , Susanna smiles each time he did this to me , saying “yes” with a widening smile. Then “yes” again. “ That’s it” ! As I recall . His touch was so gentle but the effect was significant. Truly a great man.

      What a classic story Rob, so cool to get the chance to train privately with Suzanna and the Master. I can see it all happening in my mind's eye, when you see two people communicating in pure energy like that you know it's real. And being the recipient does change us doesn't. One thing that's always amazed me about Sigung is that he never held back these things as too secret, he showed them openly

    Hey Dave! You are right in saying that it helps if we believe in it. It is so easy to believe in it when you had the chance of feeling it! I had that chance and it kick started the process for me (after over 20 years of mechanical Wing Chun!). It was still a lot of work though! 😉

    • @WingChunMindForce
      @WingChunMindForce 20 дней назад

      It's like that saying believe it and you'll see it rather than see it and you'll believe it. I think we all did our time with mechanical Wing Chun. It's a shame that we didn't have teachers who could show us this from the start but at least our students have that chance. I have only one student but I've shown him all this from the very get go and he's coming along very well indeed . In the school I started with they had this idea that while doing things physically is not really right it gives you quick fighting abilities, but you can work up to chi after you've been here a couple of years. Which to me is just nuts because then we have to disentangle ourselves from the bad habits. Cheers, my friend

    Dear Sifu. I have met quite a number of people under Sigung's lineage and saw youtube videos of many others. It seems many long term practioners are kind, gentle modest and , compassionate. Do you believe practicing Tsui Sheung Tin branch of Wing Chun changes character?

    • @WingChunMindForce
      @WingChunMindForce 22 дня назад

      Absolutely! It's so powerful because it is actually the real kung fu. I believe it's the essence of Shaolin and that spirit of the gentle warrior Monk. The total soft power emphasis requires that you have as little ego as possible and ego is the main cause of aggression and nastiness in this world. There are so many people claiming to be the real wing chun but when you look at it logically how many real acknowledged masters came out of that area of Futshan? Not many, it was never a mass produced art, is actually attracts its own people who have the right spirit. People with the wrong spirit usually give up within the first couple of years. Or they changed the art into just another strength based boxing style. Master Chu Shong Tin is beloved as he was the epitome of the gentle kung fu master, powerful beyond belief yet humble smiling kind. I feel extremely lucky to have found his lineage to train under. Thanks for your cool comment.😀🙏🙏

    Dear Sifu. It is really relaxing to listen to your thoughts. It is very informative. I have one question on your Nim Lik Video. At what stage does one can be considered to have obtained Nim Lik? I study under Tsui Sheung Tin lineage. These days many people are able to relax and use SLT movement to generate power with teachers guidance like I see in Sigung's footage posted by Sifu Nima. This happens quite early on. Would you consider this to be Nim Lik? Thank You

    • @vikingsuperpowers
      @vikingsuperpowers 28 дней назад

      Hi, i'm very glad to hear that you like my videos and that you find my voice relaxing😀 It's always good to find relaxing things in this life that is often stressful. Thanks for your great question, many people think that Nim Lik is only a very high-level Power that very few ever achieve. I disagree based on the writings ofMaster Chu Shong Tin himself. he tells a story where he says that if somebody unexpectedly had to jump from a 6 foot wall, that if he tenses he might break his ankle. But if the person stays relaxed then he will land okay. He then says that this is Nim Lik. He's not talking about kung fu here he's talking about a natural quality that we all have. So yes, I think that when people start achieving some effortless power that is definitely Nim Lik. I have been told by people who were direct students of his that he said that children and animals have this power naturally and that we just need to let go of our conscious human mind to allow this Power to appear. A great Australian Master was once asked the same question and his reply was that just like there are ordinary drivers of cars and then there are racing drivers so it is with this kung fu mind force. It's extremely important in our art to think for yourself 😀 CST himself said that he had no idea how high this Art could go, what sort of power could be developed. He has said to have been attempting to move things without touching them near the end of his life, apparently he couldn't do it but he didn't discount the possibility. Very best wishes, David

    There used to be a show called "Fight Science" which used high tech equipment etc to document the science/physics behind fighting. One episode they had a guy come in to study "Ki/Chi" . They were really skeptical to do this experiment, even had medical staff onsite. To prove that Ki is real, they smashed the guy in the abs with a baseball bat , full force. Then they did a X-ray, and as the monk told them, he was totally fine, no broken bones, no pain. The scientist outright said "I can't explain it, but this machine is correct. He's fine."

It's very hard to tell what Master Yip actually taught any more but this concept would seem to be an old one which he would've no doubt taught. My understanding and practice is that you seal off the bottom part of your torso and connect it to the top of your head and everything expands naturally. It's about getting used to feeling really subtle feelings that eventually become more intense and can really take you by surprise. My question regarding this topic where is your weight on the heel on the center or on the ball and why

    • @WingChunMindForce
      @WingChunMindForce 4 месяца назад

      Weights over centre of foot. That's why my Sifu taught us to wear the old-fashioned cotton soled kung fu shoes so as you could pivot and work on that idea, so that your heel and your ball both slide pivoting around the centre imaginary point of your foot. In reality you're not going to be able to do that with most ordinary shoes or bare feet but it's more just a mental feeling of the absolute centre of your balance. It's a good training exercise but eventually you want to be floating on imaginary water with your Tai Gong sealing off your pelvis as if it's a ball and connected to the top of your head and feeling absolutely straight up and down. That's the chum kiu stage and then when you move to Bil Gee, you keep that same feeling but you can move it anyway around an imaginary point in the centre of your body.

      Spot on mate! I am really into my Viking research now and I've been finding some amazing connections between the Vikung Age and the principles of Wing Chun. I know a lot of the conservatives in our lineage would turn up their nose at such things because they don't like stuff out of the ordinary, but get this, in the ancient book of Viking so-called myths it says that 'wizards come from the tree of intent'. How's that! To me that sums up Wing Chun and the type of mine that we use. Hope you're well catch up soon.

    Please provide instructions on how to do this

    • @WingChunMindForce
      @WingChunMindForce 4 месяца назад

      Excellent question, this video (at bottom) is one of many I've made that are about finding the Nim Tau state of mind and specifically to find a feeling in the back of your head where you reside there and stop worrying about what your body is doing. This is not easy when you're just trying to do the form or especially if you're rolling arms with somebody. It's too easy for your conscious mind to kick in and start trying to control what's going on. My balance exercises are really really useful for this and if you go back through my earlier videos, you'll find a number about walking on fences and also balancing sticks on your fingers. I think people often dismiss these videos thinking that they're not Wing Chun but the truth is they are fast track exercises to find that feeling. You can't balance unless you can enter that mind State and allow your subconscious mind to take over the balancing work. So once you can feel that mind You should practice switching it on when you're just sitting around watching TV or driving the car or whatever. It's a definite feeling in the back of your head. The next stage is where you tell yourself. basically your conscious mind, to sit still back there and whatever's happening in your body Don't try to leave that place in the back of your head and go out into the arms. Does that make any sense? I used to imagine that I had a little lounge chair in the back of my head and I would sit back there and look out the windows of my eyes as I was practising the forms. The next stage is when you are so aware of the difference between the two minds that you work on getting emptier and emptier and trying less and less. The secret is to feel that your arms are as light as feathers, and no matter what pressure put people on you Just ignore it. It doesn't matter if they collapse yours, arms or in inverted commas beat you just ignore it. What you want to do is believe that absolute softness is absolute strength. This might sound like a load of crap but when you experience it, it's quite aweinspiring. I first got it when a master was demonstrating amazing Mindforce on our group and he was crushing everybody's arms, and I've been listening to him so when I put my arm out I just did nothing, I literally stood there as if I was just reaching for an apple on a tree the master couldn't move my arm and was very impressed and he said how are you doing that When I told him he was more impressed and he said not many people worked that out for themselves. I just said I listen to everything you tell me and meditate on it and this is the obvious conclusion. Keep asking questions if you need more or just tell me how you go ruclips.net/video/DglK2g7c4Sc/видео.htmlfeature=shared

The Sifu I train with always pulls me up on my footwork. I’m starting to think he is not that good of a teacher even if he is high level in his own wing chun skill. Rewatching this video. How can you maintain that power whilst curving your back, crouching like boxers doing? In a fight, it's unusual to stand upright and not practical.. Also, have you researched stuff about the psoas muscle? Is that the muscle that's being triggered?

    • @WingChunMindForce

      That's a really great question and an important question. This is quite an old video now, but I still agree with it, I would say for quite awhile my emphasis has been on feeling yourself as being a floating unified torso. So the training of the forms always has that straight connection between the Tai Gong and the top of the head going on no matter what you're doing.But then in your experimenting and testing and pressure testing where a partner is putting force on you, either, your arms or your legs or your torso, and you move them effortlessly, that's where you feel this unified State so that nothing can affect you doesn't matter what position your spine or your body is in. You could be flat on your back on the floor and this is where Wing Chun becomes extremely valuable for wrestling or jujitsu practice. a physical fact that your spine is a double S shape and can never actually be straight. Anyway, the straightness is really just that idea of a connection between the floor of your pelvis and the top of your head. Have you ever seen that second terminator movie where the policeman terminator is made out of liquid metal? That whole concept and the way he moves for me is a really good visualisation of what I'm trying to say here, that you become jointless and you don't think about your spine or any of the internal mechanisms You just move as one thing that morphs around in 3D space. Thanks very much for writing as always mate and please keep asking if this doesn't really make sense, I'm happy to keep talking about it. As you realise this internal Wing Chun is mind driven which literally means it's a lot to do with imagination but imagine imagination that's not just a fantasy. It actually creates power, you could say that it conjures power . Cheers

    Hi Dave! Again a great video! You say so much lately! I loved the idea of "discovering" the internal with the practice, as you mentioned in the beginning. I agree at 100% about this. In my experience, it is not about developping something that is not there yet but, tuning up to something that is already there in each of us. I also loves how you described the progression in the system by transporting the internal principle from SLT to the other forms and more motions. 😎👍

    If you ever had the opportunity to ask him , I believe CST would have told you he’s ‘still learning’ . His greatest wish was to teach his students to be better than himself. I agree wholeheartedly on training all forms but will always come back to the foundation. All of the answers are in sui nim tao. I recently commented on a RUclips video of someone demonstrating chum kui and was totally dismayed by his apparent limited ability. Obviously no understanding of sui nim tao. These people are also teaching wing chun. Unbelievable 🙁

      I wish so much that I had met him! It's stories from people like yourself keep me going and I can tell the sort of man he was from his writings. The sad fact of the matter with Wing Chun is that the majority of practitioners have learnt from people who learnt from people who learnt from people who didn't really get told what it was all about. So much of Wing Chun that I watch is people's valiant attempts to work out what the true power is about. Very hard to do on your own. Even in our lineage I see people who started their own schools way before they were ready and over the years have learnt the other forms by copying without really getting good at the first one. Chum Kiu is super necessary before moving onto the higher forms because that's where you learn to move that State you create in SNT. Eh mate!😀 In the end, all forms are SNT because SNT is the mindbody state, not the movements. That's where people get confused. One thing that's always frustrated me is I'm here to be used by anyone who wants to come and get me or ask me to their school, but because I wasn't a bloody blue shirt , I'm not taken seriously. That's the legacy of the Academy unfortunately. It's that human reliance on ranking which often doesn't reflect whether somebody really knows the art or not. I judge myself by my own performance and feeling and also by the judgement of my true seniors. But in the end Wing Chun is a 'Way' and a personal obsession for all of us. It's not like we belong to some great big multinational chain of schools where there is a fantastic career waiting for us. Ha ha wouldn't it be great if you could actually make good money out of teaching the real thing. Maybe it's possible. Anyway I get a buzz out of it and I know you still do. Cheers brother

      @@WingChunMindForce be satisfied with the enjoyment it brings to you. Albert didn’t bother to go for any gradings beyond 1st level. When asked why , he just shrugged his shoulders , smiled and said it doesn’t mean anything. I remember some instructors going to Hong Kong , wearing their blue uniforms and being asked about their badge , “first level” ? And being directed to the fish tank and pointed to the label “water level” 😂. The blue uniform didn’t mean anything apart from separating students from instructors . I recall many new blue uniform instructors being very cautious about which senior students they would spar with. Sad. I get a buzz just from chatting with you. The tiny bit we’ve done together amounts to nothing yet. When I can dedicate time I’m certain you will teach me equal whatever you gain from my ability. Looking forward to that mate 👍🏻👍🏻. Thanks.

    Cheers mate. I’m going the wing chun route Dave. I pretty much stopped doing yoga except for a 5 min warm up stretch. I don’t do meditation either. Siu Lim Tao but I’ll put in 30mins a time. I’m trying to increase the minutes but it’s hard not to let the brain wander. I’m on it though. In class I do as taught at home I do as I feel. What I understand from what you are saying is that it can be anything that gets you into that relaxed state. I do the first section as shown for however long it takes to really start to feel my elbow cos the initial minutes are needed as I cannot immediately fall into it but after a time it comes or I think it comes. This is where I don’t know if I’m kidding myself on or if I’m starting to attain the thing. Today I felt tension in the trapezius on the left side or it may have been the supraspinatus who knows, it was round there somewhere. I physically felt myself relax it. Hopefully this is what you mean and a series of little events like this will allow me to attain the thing. What do ya make of all that Dave? Cheers

      Great stuff mate!! I'm terribly sorry that I missed your comment, I have been caught up in all sorts of other things just lately but I'm glad I came back and found this. You are really on the right track really boils down to his relaxing and knowing that you've got this perfect animal within you that is like a deer in the forest or a tiger in the bamboo😀 When Wing Chun is done the way it should be it feels like nothing, as if you are watching this creature perform with effortless yet massive force but you are somewhere else. It's great that you are mapping your body, what Sigung Chu called making a mind map. Have a look at the videos by Mark Ho from Sung Wing Chun, his teaching about Yi or Yee is fantastic. I have some videos here explaining what I understand of what he says and how it applies to what I have learnt. Have you tried my approach to using very light plastic balls in your hands when doing the forms? See if you can find that video it's awhile back but it's a really great practice that I still do. It's all about consciousness and you're well on your way . Cheers Dave.

      It's a catch 22 thing. There is much supposed Wing Chun around but it's usually based on trained athletic strength and really just kicking and punching, young man's kung fu, and I watch people trying to compete against superfit hard men boxers and wrestlers with this silly 100 chain punches approach. I was a JKD principles guy in the 70's and sparred full contact in the ring but there was little art to it, just what I had learnt from my amateur heavyweight boxer father (good stuff) and from my Tae Kwon Do 3rd Dan teacher who was really into Bruces concepts. I know this sounds like a cop out, but if I was 30 and could do what I do now I would definitely get in the ring, but now I'm 66 having had multiple concussions in sport through my life, I just can't afford to die in the ring from getting hit hard. People who are good at the mind -based art are generally older, because it takes time and patience to get it, it doesn't really make sense to young strong people to give that away to search for something more powerful but less easily understandable. The very best martial art is to avoid fighting, and be cunning, to put up with insults from thugs, who outnumber you all might be carrying weapons, do not smart, mouth back and get yourself in the poo, to find a way to slip away. Obviously, if you have to fight to protect yourloved ones then you fight and you fight ruthlessly. I think real Wing Chun is a very ruthless Art. That's why we don't spa, because sparring has the wrong attitude, sparring goes in an out in an out, touching and releasing where as what we are taught is to go in and stay in until the fights over. No piss weak chain punches, every punch or kick should be devastating. I think the idea of Wing Chun punches being weak just comes from the fact that most people who think they are practising Wing Chun are not, it just looks like the art. Cheers, Dave
