Tales From the Loop (TFTL) - Starter Set Unboxing
Very nice review. Removing the hedge was a great idea. It makes it more terrifying especially if you make it that they are something and go look then see the rats up close.
I have 2 questions for anyone. Firstly, if I buy the suggested 3 core sets and am now wanting an expansion (like Clan War) do I need to buy 3 of those as well or just one? Secondly, what is the card pool limit of each deck or is there not one?
thank you for the advice, i will be changing the scenario to address these issues you have brought to light.

Just played this. The pre-gens had great ties to each other and fun to play. As a player, it was disappointing we found the safe Mac knew about but we couldn't open it. Lol.
Wow! That is a really great Keeper's review. Thanks! I'm running it very soon. Another prep that I did was to watch the movie GHOST SHIP (2001) to get some additional atmosphere ideas.

I understand. It was actually just recently announced that there will be a new L5R video game. There are also a couple boardgames on the horizon for the IP. We’ll see how they shape out to be…

17 Emil decks...nice
It’s tough work but someone’s gotta do it
what's you feelings on the new university library that was announced today?
Sorry forgot to reply to this. The change was in my opinion was a great one. The possibility of 4 extra cards a turn was too powerful. It's still a strong Haven even with the nerf. What do you think of the change?
My personal opinion is that Emil is too _cheap_ for his cost. He's got a double 2 stat and, for all intents and purposes, 2 _very_ powerful abilities. I'd happily bid 2 for Emil. His major drawback is that it's never really been clarified _what_ events he can ignore and _why_.
Agreed, the double 2 stat makes him one of a kind. Both abilities are very good. His power is partially tied to the City Deck, will be interesting to see what kinds of events are in Rio. Also agreed in regards to the events. There’s answers to them but they’re somewhat scattered throughout the discord server and from things Matt Hyra answered at Gencon. I think those answers should be consolidated and posted in a document as a part of the FAQ or perhaps it’s own page.
@@thecardsmiths1262 there is a consolidated one done by satyrjester.
@@thecardsmiths1262 It would be great to get some definitive answers from Hyra on the mechanics of Emil ignoring events, but he' notoriously cagey when it comes to answering more complex rules questions.

This is a compilation of short Call of Cthulhu scenarios. These scenarios started life as 1 hour introductory scenarios for conventions and game stores. They have all been expanded slightly but they are still SHORT scenarios. Claiming they are not "Full scenarios" shows a clear lack of experience with the Call of Cthulhu RPG. Those of us who have been playing for decades know that not every session has to be a 15 hour deep dive or 18 month campaign. Call of Cthulhu works just fine as a 90 minute one-shot... IF you know how to run it.

Thank you for watching! We’re glad we could be of help!
Can you just buy one core set and then an expansion set instead of having to buy 3 core sets? or you always need the 3 core sets?
You actually only need the 1 Core Set to play. However, your deckbuilding options with a single Core Set will be very limited. But you could expand this by either adding additional Core Sets or through expansions (which are a more fun way to go as you’ll gain new cards and characters instead of getting additional copies of the cards you already have). I would recommend buying an expansion instead of the additional Core Sets. The only reason to buy additional Core Sets is to have more than 1 copy of most of the Core Set cards. To make a long story short, no you do not need to buy the second or third Core Set and can grow your collection through an expansion. Hope this helps! Have fun in Rokugan! Max
@@thecardsmiths1262 thank you it actually does! So 1 expansion set would be enough to have 3 copies of the expansion set cards + 1 copy of the core set ones. Correct?
@@GuillermoRiesgo Yes, that’s correct!
Didn't even know it was live. Wonder how much the end product will change from the prerelease decks I bought?
Glad we were able to inform you that it is! To be honest it will like have quite a few changes that have been made. I know they’ve already made a number of balancing changes and they may implement a few more if any balance issues arise during their PAX Unplugged and/or Tabletop Simulator tournaments. At least on the bright side the changes made are in an attempt to make the game better / more balanced. I definitely see why it would be frustrating from the perspective of someone who purchased the demo decks though! Maybe you be able to use the demo decks to show people the game before the Kickstarter fulfillment if you decide to back it. Or if you don’t back it, you could use those same demo decks to play going forwards!

Interesting to see a Root and Ahoy fan not covering Oath.
Hey, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I think part of the reason for that is because I own Ahoy and did own Root but I’ve never had my own copy of Oath. I’ve played Oath 4 times with friends as one of them has a copy, but it is a bit more challenging to make certain videos without having a copy of a game myself. I actually had plans back in 2020 to make some videos covering Oath but as you know, those never came to fruition hahah. I personally feel as though Ahoy is the better of the 2 games and if I’m going to be making videos for one of those games going forwards, I would rather devote that time to covering Ahoy. That said I do appreciate how unique of a game Oath is and have enjoyed my plays of it. It’s just unfortunately much lower down on my list of videos I’d like to make and games I’d like to cover. In regards to Root, if you’re interested, in the most recent video on the channel I get into the reasons why I sold Root (as this pertains to Ahoy). Thanks again for watching and hope you are well!

^_^ What do you think of the later cycles? I am concidering buying someone's collection but it contains the first 3 cycles, not the Dominion or Temptations cycles. I don't care much for competitive play but I do care a lot about cool stuff.
Great question. Personally I found the coolest cards to be within the Elemental Cycle. I enjoyed the non-human characters that cycle introduced like Tengu Sensei and the Reclusive Zykugen. The clan packs also introduced some very cool cards as well. In regards to the Dominion Cycle I would actually say that cycle is best avoided if you're just looking to play casually. That cycle is much maligned by most of the game's playerbase. It introduced the Rally keyword which is highly controversial and believed by many, ourselves included, to have been really bad for the game. As far as the Temptations cycle goes, that cycle does introduce a number of very cool and thematic cards. At that point of the story darkness was really rising and there was the growth in the use of Maho Blood magic inside Rokugan's boarders. This is reflected in many of the cards and that is pretty cool if you are interested in that. Lastly, if you play multiplayer at all Clan War and Under Fu Leng's Shadow are amazing options. Under Fu Leng's Shadow also offers a solo/co-op mode and challenge mode which are fun as well. All in all, Dominion Cycle is not needed and Temptations Cycle is not either, although it does contain some cool cards and themes.
@@thecardsmiths1262 Wow thanks, that is very informative!

For a new keeper what would be a good first scenario to run
If you are comfortable with a shorter game (~1 hour in length), there are 3 scenarios in Gateways to Terror (www.chaosium.com/gateways-to-terror/) that are very simple. Of those, I suggest starting with What's in the Cellar. There is a video about that scenario on the channel. If you own the starter set (www.chaosium.com/call-of-cthulhu-starter-set/) Paper Chase and Edge of Darkness are both good options that are not too complex. I'd start with Paper Chase with only one player, as it will be easier to manage. Alternatively, if you're looking to try the game out without spending money, I'd combine the free quickstart rules for the rules (www.chaosium.com/cthulhu-quickstart/) and Lightless Beacon from their provided free adventures (www.chaosium.com/cthulhu-adventures/). Lightless Beacon is the simplest of the free adventures. Don't hesitate to let me know should you have further questions!
@@thecardsmiths1262 Ok thanks for the help, I'll look into these options
To bad you didnt continue this :(
Hey thanks for leaving a comment! Fun fact, despite this not being the first video uploaded to our channel this was the first ever video we filmed! Honestly, the video didn't get many views and got no comments so we didn't really think there was much interest for Arkham playthroughs, especially with much bigger channels like Team Covenant covering the game. Hal is a lot busier these days, but if there is enough interest perhaps I could try filming some solo Arkham Horror adventures. That would require me getting a new camera though. I have also been busier and that wouldn't be a priority for the channel so no promises but it's something that's possible. Regardless, we are happy you enjoyed this video!
Sad but there's a reason this game is died 😪 now..... You should play original L5R 1995-1998 amazing Every friend that gets tired of magic ...I get hooked on the original L5R. Great in multi player as well ...
I believe the L5R LCG's death can be attributed more to FFG, Asmodee, and the game's mismanagement, rather than issues with the game's system itself. Pinebox Entertainment revived Doomtown and has kept it running ever since out of a devotion to the game and a willingness to support the community. And Doomtown is a more complex game than the L5R LCG (which is a knock I often hear on the LCG). That said, I have heard great things about the L5R CCG. Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately we aren't looking to get into a CCG as we prefer the fixed distribution of the LCG model. We will have more cardgame content coming to the channel in the future though that we hope will be of interest to you!
You like the 1995-1998 years better than the Emperor arc? I'm about to get into Emperor arc with my little brother ^_^ It took me quite a long time to figure out what to go for. I barely found anyone talking about the older arcs so I went for that later one, because people generally seem to think fondly of the ruleset compared to Ivory arc.
@@thecardsmiths1262 I also highly prefer the LCG system. Looking to get into L5R LCG too at some point. If only out of interest from a card design standpoint. If you are interested, these were my notes on apparent design issues between old L5R and new L5R before I get to play the games, based on online player feedback (these are not my opinions but opinions that were repeated or that stood out): " Both had two major problems: The complexity of its ruleset compared to other card games. And the imbalanced meta at any given point in time. The CCG specific problems: Snowballing. Cost. / Need for large card pool. Watered down after Emperor Arc (players enjoyed the complexity). The cards were too wordy. Specialized decks could completely lack player interaction. And the LCG specific problems: Match length, being a problem specifically for tournament play. (Long and exhausting in a tournament setting.) Lack of feedback during play (did I make a bad move/good move/was it luck?). / Unsatisfying learning curve. Far too many rules changes and bans to keep up with in a casual manner. Thematic incongruity. (Cards and their stats.) Lack of deckbuilding options. The turn structure was convoluted and made the game take long. Unlike in MTG where passing can be implied or assumed in casual play, there were a lot of essential moments where you need to pass in L5R. The board state changed too much after every action. Having personalities disappear so easily meant that situational abilities on personalities never came to fruition. Making defensive strategies hardly feasible. The honor bidding felt obtuse and unnecessary? Too many of the rules weren't obvious (not on the cards but in the head). The ruleset was clunky unless you were competitive knowing every card and trick? Required too many (types of) tokens to keep track of things. Deck construction too limited (not enough splashing into other clans to make many archetypes feasible). / Neutral card pool too limited and sucky. (Especially too few neutral conflict cards.) Duels didn't 'feel fair'. (I suppose players did not initiate duels unless they knew they were going to win.) Too many cards released later on that messed with the 'already poor economy'. Clan-locking too many actions. The eb and flow created by the fate system DID allow for the LCG to avoid snowballing (advantages and setbacks were only temporary), unlike in the CCG where suffering a single battle loss often meant game over. Though this tension of the one battle in the CCG, was also viewed as a positive by some. " From these notes and observing some games played, I am thinking of a new L5R ruleset that I think people will find enticing. Just for fun.
That "there always has been a Rat catcher" and that the mayor has paid Gurteen or that Gurteen never had to pay in the Pub are in my opinion good indicators. Also the museum in Appleton can be a good source of information. It allows you to mix locations and hints. You should never just stick to: only person a knows information x Let other people know of the poem. Etc
Finally got it to the table. 4 player game, won with Malkavian agendas (or conspiracies, whatever u call em)...rather enjoyable.
Ooo that's awesome! Hal and I finally got the game to the table over the Christmas holidays as well but we only got to play a couple of 2 player games. I haven't had the chance to play Malkavian yet, I played Toreador and the Thin Bloods from the first expansion. The conspiracies seem cool though, especially in multiplayer. Keep us posted if you get to play more, we'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the game and the other clans :)
@@thecardsmiths1262 2 player game seemed lacking to you guys? I forget what the Toreador specialize in? Howd yall like the thin blood potions? Will let yall know when I finally table it again, I think 1 of the guys in my group wasn't too fond of it, so no telling when that'll be.
@@foyoGames 2 player was fine and we had fun but I think the game would really shine with 3 or 4. A lot of the cards such as Schemes and Conspiracies seem better suited to multiplayer. The Rivals element and the interplayer dynamics of multiplayer seem interesting as well. Would love to try out multiplayer sometime and see if these predictions hold true for me. Toreador specialize in Social Conflicts and at attaching Retainers. I quite enjoyed playing the Thin Bloods, it was cool to see how the swarm faction performed in this game and I thought the theme of their deck was really strong. I found the potions to be pretty good as well. Increasing a base stat is pretty strong but that's balanced by having to exhaust the character for the turn to brew. Ah gotcha, that's totally fair. I think it's going to be difficult for Hal and I to table a multiplayer game of this as well.
@@thecardsmiths1262 oh yeah, gotta be much better @ 3 or 4. Ah, gotta tap a turn to digest the potion...& Toreador sounds intriguing too. The sad thing is any given Saturday you can find 20 commander players in a place, but not 1 will want to try out something like Rivals.

Thank you for watching!
They would last longer if it was more like tcg
Perhaps, but a company has to have a certain volume of players for the randomization production process of a CCG to be practical and affordable for them. It's possible the L5R LCG could have had this however, the game was just coming from the CCG format with AEG so it's understandable FFG wanted to attempt their LCG business model on the L5R IP. Also, there's certain people who prefer the LCG/ECG model where you know what you're buying, can own all the cards, and don't have to chase down certain cards on the secondary market. Personally, I am in the camp of that I very much prefer that business model for a game I'm playing. I much prefer being able to pick up fixed expansions and have the ability to more affordably own all the cards and know that I can have access to the complete experience the game has to offer if I want to. That being said, economically I don't think an LCG/ECG will ever be able to compete with a CCG as collectability sells, so the most economically successful, widest reaching cardgames will always be CCGs. I also understand why some people prefer the CCG format as it offers a number of good things such as sealed and draft play. If you're more drawn to the CCG format I recommend checking out Flesh and Blood if you haven't already. I've heard a lot of good things about it.
@@thecardsmiths1262 You can simulate sealed or draft play in LCG games ^_^ It does take some work to make it happen.
@@lystic9392 Great point! Android: Netruner even had draft packs made for it. Generally it is much harder though and I haven't really seen people play LCGs that way, at least in my own personal experience. I always wanted to try Netrunner draft though. Did u recently pick up a Call of Cthulu collection? How many people do u play lcgs with?
Hey, thanks for leaving a comment! Great deduction, it is the Call of Cthulhu LCG! Yeah I bought a small CoC collection and then added a bunch of expansions to it from Asmodee's website as they have a number of them on sale. Historically I've typically played LCGs with my brother (featured on the channel) and two of my friends. The Star Wars LCG multiplayer format was the go-to-game for the four of us for a long time and the game remains to this day one of my favourite games of all time. I've also played 1v1 LCGs against each of them for many years. I've been fortunate in that I have friends who are/were into LCGs so I've had people to play with. Beyond that I also played the Android: Netrunner and Star Wars LCGs at a couple of the local stores in my area and played in a few tournaments as well (a Store Championship and a couple of Regionals). How about you?
@@thecardsmiths1262 call of cthulu ...Huzzah! I recently picked up the core, the most common big box & like 5 asylum packs. Must be great having a tabletop brother! Then I moved to Little Rock, got on my grandma's schedule & still managed to have a star wars destiny league & a UFS tuesday group ...tried to get some of the destiny guys to play sw lcg ...they wouldn't bite. No way, that's crazy you also recently felt the call of the Great Cthulhu! Yeah, I'm definitely fortunate in that I've historically had a number of people interested in playing LCGs with me. That's great you had so many events and opportunities to get out and play while in Dallas. That's nice you were still able to have Star Wars Destiny and UFS groups in Little Rock as well! SW LCG is quite dense so it's not too surprising you weren't able to get your Destiny group interested. That's too bad though, it's such a great game. That's cool you've been able to table over 40 different cardgames, do you have a favourites or favourites? I know that's a super difficult question to answer haha. Yeah maybe if/when your schedule changes you'll find more opportunities to play. In the meantime, I know Doomtown Weird West Edition and 7th Sea: City of Five Sails both plan to support online play and even offer some online tournaments for people who aren't able to travel to an event and/or don't have the opportunity to play in-person. I know that doesn't come close to replacing in-person play, and in-person play is something I'm more inclined to support on the channel but maybe that'll be a way to get some games in during the meantime if that's something you're interested in. And here's to hoping you're able to find a person or a group to play some LCGs with in the future!
@@thecardsmiths1262 @The CardSmiths Yup, it was time that I heed the call of Cthulu & let him gather dust on the shelf. One of my Destiny guys claimed that alot of the card pool's combos were broken or something...he got a box of argent saga instead & that shortly died as well. My favs - 1. Force of will 2. Magic 3. Codex card time strategy 4. Lo5r 5. Dragoborne ...something like that, more or less. Really Eternal online is my real fav. When it comes to playing online, it just usually seems so much easier to bootup eternal, but considering 7th sea & doomtown may be proprietary programs vs most card games being on tts or untap or something, maybe they'll be more user friendly, gui & right up my alley. Like I was telling my friend today, out of nowhere, dude posted in the keyforge group out here, let's get some tournaments going on thursdays ...& it fits my schedule! ...Prayers semi answered ...probably still won't result in the all around lcg buddy ...but better than nothing. Looking forward to u guys' doomtown & 7th sea coverage, gunna cover solforge too?
We all must heed the Great One's call. I'm not too surprised to hear there's many broken combos given it's FFG's first LCG and has an enormous cardpool. Looking forward to playing some more games of it though. The core design by Eric Lang bears similarities to the Star Wars LCG system which I greatly enjoy and believe offers a lot of depth. I've also been pretty into the theme lately, the Syndicate faction in particular really appeals to me. 1920s gangster theme is just cool haha. Nice, I haven't played any of those but that seems like a very solid top 5! I've played L5R but the LCG from FFG and I'm guessing you're referring to the CCG? Yeah, I'm really looking forward to 7th Sea. I'm curious how their online platform for the game will look. I'm a bigger supporter of in-person play than online but I think it's great they're planning to give people the opportunity to participate in the game and the community through online events as well as many people either can't or wouldn't make it out to an in-person tournament. That's awesome that just after you were talking about wanting to find someone to play LCGs with some Keyforge plans manifested themselves! Who knows, maybe it'll evolve into some regular LCG play or maybe not but either way that's great! Thanks! We aren't going to cover Solforge and honestly likely not Doomtown either. Maybe we'll be able to get a Doomtown gameplay video up on the channel eventually but Hal and I have both been a lot more busy so that may not end up happening. I do have plans to provide 7th Sea coverage though and thanks for the support :)
good stuff guys. keep it up
Glad you enjoyed the video! We have 4 other Star Wars LCG videos to check out if you haven't already and are interested.
Running this today. Thanks for the tips!
Hope they were helpful and your session went well!
Re: at 13:00 the comment about 'How do you stop the investigators simply leaving?' the live play I heard of this the first manifestation of the creature was that the cellar door slammed shut, trapping the investigators down there. It's an easy one to throw out there if an investigator decides things are getting too creepy and decide to leave.
Awesome way to handle that!
Such a great video. Best L5R gameplay footage on RUclips
Thank you, we really appreciate it!
