RETROTEC: America’s Quintessential Framebuilder
Curtis has been building bikes under Retrotec and Inglis Cycles for over 30 years. In that time, he has perfected the swoopy silhouettes of the high-performance beach cruiser. Doing anything for 30 years is no joke, and today, we get to hang out with him in Napa California.

    The “vibe” of going through the process of getting a custom bike frame is truly something that merits both a passion for art and craftsmanship plus the desire for riding something that sings on the trails. I have had the luxury of getting a few custom frames built. This video is super cool and I appreciate you taking the time to make it.

    Beautiful bikes that stand out and also remind me of my old Typhoon. That's a good thing. There's plenty of art in there. There was a Mixte of sorts that you flashed by with curved twin laterals. That looked good as well. I had never heard of Retrotec, so thanks for bring this to the internet.

    I'm very grateful for this tutorial! I'm stuck at, 21:09 where the chain-stay centerline gets the 11 degree dimension, and then the 2nd arc/angle is given a parallel constraint with the centerline. I can't seen to get fusion to give the degree dimension option when clicking the 2nd arc/angle and hovering over above straight line...it just tries to get me to define a radius for the 2nd arc/angle instead. The parallel constraint is also not an option for the 2nd arc/angle. Maybe this is an update to how fusion works? Anyone got any pointers?

    • @Daniel_Yang_ARTEFACT
      @Daniel_Yang_ARTEFACT 7 дней назад

      I might be misunderstanding what you are trying to do: Inorder to dimension the angle, you need to click the two lines, not the arc. Admitedly, that section was a bit messy. I was trying to show different ways of constraining and using dimensions, but it may have ended up being confusing. You can arrive at the result multiple ways!

    It's amazing & sad that it's cheaper to subcontract building bike frames in Taiwan & having them shipped over sea for two months rather than made domestically. I believe Jeff Lindsay (mountain goat cycle fame) attempted starting a frame manufacturing hub during the 90's to compete with Taiwan manufacturing only to have it be ultimately unsuccessful.

    • @Daniel_Yang_ARTEFACT
      @Daniel_Yang_ARTEFACT 13 дней назад

      For sure. I think its really wasteful to have to ship things back and forth across the pacific ocean. Unforunately bikes are at the bottom of the totem pole global supply chain. On the flipside, Taiwan has more expertise and equipment for building bikes than the USA. Also manufacturing is not very glamourous. Luckily, bike frame factories are not hazardous or dangerous, but it is pretty menial labor. The imported frames allow you to create other local jobs, like building up bikes, repairing them, and leading rides. I wish it were not so complicated, but its the reality of the complex world we live in!

    Thanks for video, I always enjoy frame geometry discussions because I learn something every time. Way back, mid 1980's, I rode the first mtn bikes when everything was 26" wheels, rigid, and designers tinkered with steeper angles (Salsa). As someone that worked in trades back then with physical work, it didn't take long before hand, wrist, and arm pains started. I stopped mtn biking and stuck with road bikes, and long bike tours. I came back to mtn bikes in 2019, when I wanted to ride the GDMBR touring. I bought a Ti hardtail with Fox 34, a long wheelbase, and massive down-tube. After five years of seeking comfort by trying different stems, bars, tires, and riding half of the GDMBR with arthritis in hands, wrists, neck, I sold that bike. Even with a long wheelbase it was too stiff. I reverted to an old school design with drop-bars, steel frame, 29er mtn bike designed by someone I knew back in the 1980's, he stayed in the bike industry. Immediate comfort with the compliance of a steel frame, and drop-bars, even with a rigid steel fork. My return to racks and small light weight panniers front and rear for off road touring became a full circle realization of common sense. If you're not a racer on the Tour Divide route, and not a big drop jumper mtn biker, steel frames are the best way to go for comfort. And that's for road and off road. Drop bars on a mtn bike you'll go a little slower and more carefully downhill, but make you'll it up on the flats and long open spaces rolling faster and more comfortably. Happy Trails ☮

    Curtis is a super-cool guy who was kind enough to give me a bit of guidance some years back related to building. Being able to bend tubes like this looks easy enough, but keeping them in one plane can be challenging. The adding a bend in another plane? Then creating the mirror image? Definitely pro-level work that he does very well.
