So true! It's a rollercoaster ride of emotions learning a language but such fun! The trick for me is to occasionally stop and see how much I do know and remember the first few lessons where I knew nothing and then be proud of how far I have come, irrespective of the time it has taken. Most of all I enjoy the journey. Thanks Pat for making this journey laidback and fun!

The difficulty with language learning is that it's not like learning software development for example, where you can say "here's an app I created". It's just a slow, unremarkable process of absorption where you have moments of feeling the thrill of understanding, but most of the time you're just plodding along. Once you get into it, you're not nowhere but you're not really somewhere either, just somewhere in between. I'll admit, that's a bit frustrating as I come to the end of a year and all I can say is I'm better at Polish in some general sense :)

@laidback.languages Thanks for your reply. I'm going to copy some texts with vocab that interests me. I already write YT comments and journal entries in French. Years ago, I learned copywriting in my native English. The textbooks there suggest copying good adverts by hand to inculcate their principles into my mind. And I've heard of aspiring fiction writers using passages from classic novels in that manner.

NORMAL. BAN DEI. I was in a position which a great number of Americans and Brits now find themselves. They discover they are being LIED TO and cheated by their government in the language they are native. My fame in Spanish came from a sincere decade long HATRED of DEI and racism against Whites, which I am. I was banned on social media, I´m constantly shadow banned on RUclips and yet, I didn´t give up. I taught MYSELF to fluency in Spanish and then helped change the entire world with the current US election, and I'm brimming with pride over it!! When we had our election stolen in 2020, I decided TO ACT. So, that´s my motive, my passion. You must have THAT in some form to learn a foreign language to fluency. And believe me, NOTHING at the A and B levels is worth talking about!! You won´t feel a sense of satisfaction until you're well into C1 and can talk about emotional depth, epigenetics, theology and deep critical thinking, unless you're just an idiot. But you must find a way to SIDE WITH the target culture, even against your own, something that Brits fail miserably doing. With Spanish, you come to realize, The Black Legend is true and you share in that guilt. Then you have a goal to erase your stain and help the people of Spain, instead of just bitching because they don´t drink tea and have your crappy breakfast.

I saw another RUclipsr talking about how you shouldn't bother memorising vocab but should instead acquire it and I agree. I just keep reading and listening to things in Polish, compare it to the English and over time I just find I know what the words mean... If I was setting myself exercises like memorising and reciting a bunch of words, I might introduce needless performance anxiety.

Disagree. I watch a channel called Easy Japanese listening, where the host talks softer and slower to help you understand. The key is actually repetition and hearing the same words, then your brain will be thinking ‘I’ve heard that one before’. You may RECOGNIZE a word, but you have to have a DICTIONARY to know it. Example: without looking up a dictionary, what does かわいい (kawaii) mean? You probably KNOW it means ‘cute’ because you’ve heard it a billion times and you’ve looked it up or ASKED what it means. But what about ボンキュッボン?… That is a word that you don’t learn from a dictionary or ANY books. It is ‘bonqiu-bon’ and means ‘thicc’.

Great points! I think the biggest misconception of language learners who fail is the idea that they can somehow "force" the process; sure, discipline is essential but anything that causes self inflicted stress is terminal to the process. I like the positive energy notion you propose. Languages are like vast universes that should fill the beholder with wonder and excitement. Ask any honest polyglot and they'll happily admit to having made thousands of mistakes but it's never an issue for them. The sheer pleasure of exploring the unknown and patiently enjoying the process will achieve the best results.
