Good advice. I am strict with myself about dabbling (avoid the trap!) but I'm allowing myself to do it with Japanese because-perversely-I have no intention of seeing it through and will just be happy with basic interactions with people. Plus (1) I am definitely going to use it, (2) the level of English is super low, so even caveman Japanese is a big enabler (it's not like going to Germany with caveman German and it essentially being pointless), and (3) the food, culture, everything that Japan entails is appealing and will be enhanced. It will make a great trip an extraordinary one. Because I have no plan to learn it indefinitely, once the trip is finished and I'm not obligated to continue learning something I'm not 100% in on, it won't become an albatross round my neck and negatively impact the languages that I truly do want to learn and are more worthy/deserving/in need of my time. If any of that little outburst makes sense.

@@mellowasahorse that's amazing 🙌🙌. Dabbling can be the death of many wannabe fluent speakers! Avoid the trap! Haha
