First Tram Ride on Parramatta's New Light Rail Line. Yay!
Parramatta's New Light Rail Has opened. This is video from the first tram on the line. How cool eh!
In December 2023, we got an early Christmas present when Parramatta Light Rail started trial running - we thought trams would run mid 2024 - but didn't happen. But literally one year later we received another Christmas Gift when it was announced with just two days notice that the line would start running on 20th December 2024.

14th December 2019 is a date that feels like a lifetime ago. The black summer bush fires were raging across Australia, the first cases of covid-19 were being reported and amongst all of that doom and gloom - there was one bright spot, because 5 years ago the Sydney CBD and Southeast Light Rail opened on the 14th of December 2019 To celebrate the fifth birthday of the lines we'll take a look at ...
BACK TO THE FUTURE Light Rail Lines for Sydney
Просмотров 11 тыс.4 месяца назад
Recently, BACKTRACKS published a video on ALTRAC’s proposal for Sydney’s sixth light rail line. Tucked away in that document was a map showing possible lines beyond the Parramatta Road to Green Square line. In this video, we explore these proposals and do a bit of speculation on where else light rail could expand. As the video is based on ALTRAC's proposal, it focuses on the Eastern side of the...

There is a proposal to extend the Sydney Light Rail network even further, with a new line connecting Taverners Hill, Parramatta Road in the inner west to Green Square in the inner south via Central Railway Station. This video takes a look at the possible route of this new line. As we know, the Parramatta Light Rail Line Stage 1 is called L4.. and so we could easily assume that Stage 2 will be c...
The Watson's Bay Tram Line - Once The Busiest Of Them All
Просмотров 7 тыс.7 месяцев назад
The Watson's Bay Tram Line was a nearly independent line within the original Sydney Tramway Network. While just one line, it was bigger than Hobart's and about the same size as Newcastle's network in terms of number of trams that operated on it. By the way, videos on this channel are not meant to be 100% accurate historical records. Having said this, we try to ensure they are factually correct ...
New Zealand's Trams. Once Were Wonderful.
Просмотров 5 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Trams were everywhere in NZ 100 years ago, but then by the second half last century they weren’t really anywhere. In fact today they don't form a part of a official commuter public transport in any city. But in spite of that, NZ's tramway history is rich and varied, boasting a fleet that included horse-drawn, cable, electric, funicular, and even battery-operated trams over a century ago.
Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 - It's Happening!

The second stage of Parramatta’s light rail project has finally been given the go-ahead - seven years after the former government first announced the proposed line. It was meant to start construction before 2020. But hey, lets celebrate this win! If you are interested in finding out more about Parramatta's Tram and Light Rail. First Parramatta Tram In 30 Years

We got an early Christmas present last year when video of the new Parramatta tram started trial running in the middle of the night. The first trams to run in Parramatta since the Steam Tram museum burnt down in 1993. The first of two lines runs 12 kilometres between Carlingford and Westmead, via the Parramatta CBD. Which was the first city in Australia to have a fully electric tram network up and running? One would probably guess Melbourne or perhaps Sydney. It was actually Hobart, the capital of the island state Tasmania, Australia. In this video let's look the tale of how Hobart at one time led public transport in Australia - with the first ever fully complete electric tramway - but today has lost its t...
Newcastle's Trams - A Castle Collapsed, But Rebuilt (sort of).
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.Год назад
The Newcastle, Australia tram network was a tram system that operated from 1887 to 1950. Up until 1923 it was a steam network, when the first lines of the systems were converted to electric operations, and then 7 years later in 1930 it was exclusively electric. A referendum was held to keep or close the network - and the 'close the network' won by just 1 vote. And so the trams were gone. In 201...

Fantastic video! Thanks! Did the trams stop at Woollahra?
Excellent video. I remember when the tunnels were used as a car park.
Perth has teased light rail so much, even until now. I wish We could do what sydney did and put them back in
Perth would be a perfect city to reintroduce light rail - running on street in the city centre and then on reservations into the suburbs - but metronet seems to be coming along well. Lots of new lines / development?
@backtracks.channel big heavy rail development with metronet for outside the cbd, so getting to the city, or bigger suburbs is far better now, but not very much in terms of getting to the stations, or going across suburbs
I went to Parramatta from Dundas last weekend to buy some guitar strings. Left home at 1pm and got back home at 1:30 😮
That's great to hear already useful for you.
i am so glad that you agreed with me the difference between light rail and trams Neil Forbes gets very confused at times between the two.
So what?? We've got fkng world class SYDNEY METRO which many states and countries would only fkng HOPE. Stop complaining and don't take things for granted, appreciated what we've got.
Mona's wall of carn'ts is a bit rugged.
Rebuilding destroyed heritage buildings is a waste of funds. Why can't they spend our taxes on hospital beds instead?
Went and saw it yesterday, lovely bike ride alongside. I’m so glad you got that video of the gates opening!! Especially seeing your origin story of the Eastern Suburbs line opening, being the same age as you, it was one or two “rail mania” eras ago. This current era really is the best one 50 years either side, I’d speculate.
Yes the bike ride is great.. in one of my earlier visits I rode my bike long the whole length.. until you do you don't realise how high Carlingford is (as it long uphill climb on a bike). yes I was surprised no one else was there at the depot.. I was even doubting myself I had the right day at the time as nothing much was happening there... :)
And agree.. feels like a good era for public transport..
Another place for the smarties and poli friends to get their snout in the trough
Can hardly wait to use it! Parramatta is big enough to deserve infrastructure like this
i'm hearing tourner de la vide somewhere in the background 🎶 literally a metal snail ya got here 🐌 👍
Don't disagree with the speed of the tram at some points.. just was in France last week (so appreciate the french reference) and trams certainly run faster there (but not as fast as Amsterdam which from my personal experience are some of the fastest!).
please avoid filiming people
So Parramatta has light rail now wonderful
It’s so good to hear the cheers for proper light rail. Something we won’t have in Brisbane with our fancy bendy buses.
Great video. Many thanks Marty.
Cheers for watching!
Its nice how people still turn out to see things like this.
My son and I waited till around 9am to hop onboard at Fennell Street. Only went to Westfields but I was happy to see how nice the light rail went. Thanks for posting, Marty.
GDay - Its great to see a modern lightrail system operating in Sydney finally...Its decades overdue!
Hi Marty, thanks for sharing this excellent video. I rode on the Parramatta Park Museum steam trams several times during the 1970s and my last visit there was in 1983. Also, my dad actually rode on one of the Parramatta steam trams heading to the wharf in about 1941. The light rail conversion there reminds me a lot of the St Kilda and Port Melbourne lines down here, which are light rail tram lines previously converted from train lines. You were at the opening of the Eastern Suburbs Railway?? Wow!! So was I, though I am not sure if I saw the very first train. Hey, you should have given me a wave!!! LOL. Incidentally, when I was very young, my dad took me to the newly opened Circular Quay Station. I remember seeing some teenagers sliding down the hand rail areas of the escalators. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
What great memories. Thanks for sharing. And for your posts as always. Circular Quay would have been a big event - you are lucky to have been part of that.
Congrats to everyone who helped build this new infrastructure for Parramatta and surrounds!
I wonder why they didn't use the new trams like the ones in Sydney.
A short video on the potential expansion to Newcastle light rail would be great. I think Newcastle in the next few decades is poised for major growth especially with the talk of fast rail to Sydney.
They really should work out way of connecting to Epping, giving connection to heavy rail and metro
Can't wait to try this out next time I visit Parra!
10:50 I was at the opening of the Eastern Suburbs Line with my parents and brother in 1979. I remember it well. The only other inaugural I’ve been on was the first Canberra-Sydney Xplorer in 1993 (?).
I may have seen you :) ... I have a memory of walking down a very long set of stairs at Central Railway Station - with crowds of people - not sure why we were not on escalators? I seem to recall it wasn't fully open at the time.
Since we are really getting into improved transport infrastructure, we need to concentrate on HOW we build them, where we build them and the experience for commuters. The construction period is enormously destructive and deadly for anyone, particularly businesses unlucky to be in the way of the overly long and mostly late construction times. They are being built in some very odd and inconvenient locations by people I am almost certain will never use them. The stations do not integrate well with or add to their neighbourhoods. They are almost universally dull, and dead, often with difficult or restricted access that slows down the journey. There is no life, no bustle, no community, no social interaction, no personality around the waiting areas. A result of the engineers who design the infrastructure. One thing I notice is despite there are hundreds if not thousands of poles and other essential structures there does not seem to be any attempt at design for mass manufactured efficiency with style. The shelters are suitably boring and sanitised but everything else is weld jobs and a lot of stuff just to make it stay up, not much else. That and a heck of a lot of unattractive carbon generating concrete.
Thanks for sharing some great thoughts. For me also everything is completely over-engineered. (I am not an engineer) I have just been travelling in Europe and ridden some networks there in France and Switzerland - and everything from tracks, to overhead wires and stations are much more paired back - if we didn't 'over build' our light rail perhaps we would more easily be able to get more lines built as they wouldn't cost so much.
Will it extend to Epping?
Wouldn't that be great - however I can't see any formal discussion from government on any future plans. If you do see anything - please post here as the discussion may make for a good video.
Never imagined ever seeing this...
That Carlingford line whilst historical seemed pointless and they just never started developing from industrial into residential or mixed. I hope the tram changes that. A lot of wasted land when we have a housing shortage. I think that extension will be a good one....... Also called it Melrose Place and use to live a few streets away.
Made it in at the start as an extra in the blue shirt! It was a fantastic day for Parramatta, and a fantastic day for Public Transport and the revival of trams which are desperately needed! I love all the work you do describing the old tram lines in detail! It helps me a lot with the stuff I do! And it’s given me a few extra bushwalks to do on old tram lines! Thanks again, Matthew
HI, thanks for watching and commenting.. and thanks for your cameo appearance in the video :). Yes I do enjoy researching the old tram lines as well so glad you enjoy that. For me the good former tram line walks I like are at Manly / The Spit, Balmoral, Watsons Bay, and around the former Rozelle Depot.
Gee Jo Haylon was already in the tram leaving the depot….
Actually yes I think it was. I didn't notice at the time nor when editing it. I just had to watch it now.
HOW DUMB ARE YOU? HOW CAN A STATION BURN DOWN IN 2016 AND BE REBUILT IN 2007?
they should have extend to Epping! Going just to Carlingford is just ok if it was extended to Epping metro that would been the best option.
I know right... it was a no brainer.. although not easy to build.
I rode the bike from the Harbour Bridge up to Epping (especially lovely under Gore Hill freeway) and it’s such a strange missing link to Carlingford. The whole time I’m in that weird zone, I’m non-stop thinking about where a tram might go and a bikeway might go. Most certainly there’s a good quiet space on the southwest corner of the road bridge, and it should be closed for traffic for the trams or bikes or both. But at least for pedestrians. I made sure to give my feedback to the bridge rebuilding project, to allow any possible decisions that are still available to future proof for this. That entire shopping strip is choked by cars. The M2 is the intended bypass and there’s no more necessity to maximise the traffic flow through the former “A2” route.
I don't know where they would put the line? There's seriously steep hills between Carlingford and Epping.
@@AbitLippy tunnel, epping station deep underground
@@hi9580 yeah it's the only way. Super expensive though. I'm sure they'll do it one day if it's technically possible.
6:17 wow it hasn’t really changed a lot in the area
And not too long ago (before the light rail depot started construction) there were a few remnants of the old tram station / racecourse entry. I wish I had captured some of that on video.
Thanks Marty for the very informative journey of yours. Keep doing more videos
Thanks for watching!
Is that Jo Haylen on the tram leaving the depot
Actually yes I think it was. I didn't notice at the time when filming (trying not to get run over by all the trucks on that road) nor when editing it. I just had to watch it now.
Wow, thanks for putting this together for us, great stuff. It's great we have an opportunity to celebrate another tram line in Sydney.
Cheers for watching. I'm glad you liked it - more trams are definitely a good thing. But will be a few years before I get to make a video like this - hopefully when Parramatta Stage 2 opens.
Hang on did I get this right? You said "my mother took me to the opening of the Eastern Suburbs Railway back in 1979....", does that mean you are easily past 50 or close to 60? No way you dont sound that old.
Just past 50 :)
My dad is 92 but sounds 50, well, older adult.
@@backtracks.channel I honestly thought you were a teenager or young adult just based on your voice haha! Awesome video mate as always I also paid it a visit on opening day but not early in the am though, not that dedicated 😂
had no idea this was finally running lol good to know!
Yes was a surprise - only 2 days notice they where starting - most expected it to be in 2025 after the recent issues with testing.
I can see myself in the video! It was very exciting to ride the first service.
Ha, yes I am also expecting me to be in other peoples videos as well..
Nicely done
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it.
Well done thanks Marty.🚉🚊🍺
Thanks for watching! Cheers
L4 to Epping
If they are replacing heavy rail with light rail it would be like the St Kilda and Port Melbourne lines.
sydney always 30 years behind,
Not replacing, integrating. Sydney has the most integrated public transport system in the country. My understanding is that light rail services pockets of the city that don’t have or are too small to have the suburban rail system present.
Weird, I always just assumed you were in your 20s; turns out you're around 50!
How do you figure he’s 50
@ because he was there for the Eastern Suburbs Railway in 1979, 45 years ago and was “very little” at the time which probably means 3-6 years old.
Young voice
I was on the first tram out of westmead at 4:58am! I believe i was on the tram that was filmed at 0:51 edit: no i dont think i was
Great stuff. Something you will always remember.. and tell your kids (if they like trains / trams :) Yes that maybe right.. as that tram came in after the first tram from Carlingford arrived.
How did you like the experience today? What was it like at Westmead on the first tram?
@@backtracks.channeli’m only 14, long way away from kids lol
@@backtracks.channelreally nice experience, pretty packed with rail enthusiasts mostly geeking out
Very smart looking new Tram, (be good to have these over here NZ)
Thanks for watching.. Not sure if you got to see the video on NZ's trams.. As an Aussie, who lived in NZ for many years... I can say NZ was way more into trams than AU on a per capita view... but like AU got caught up in the anti tram mania of the 50s and 60s... I think ChCh at least was a city that should have kept them.
Slow as, just like it's L2 and L3 Snail Rail counterpart.
Yes I agree... I have been fortunate enough to just have ridden on trams in a few French and Swiss cities this last month.. and our trams do feel like snails are driving them.
@backtracks.channel come to Melbourne to see what tram.travel.is all about. Multiple road side stops, fast acceleration and speed along both shared roadways and reservations. Please do tell why the L2 has mostly 40 or 59 kmh limits even along road reservations. Could not figure that out!!
