Preparing a Series 2 X-Panel for a Watercolor Painting PART 2- Painting the Pine Marten
I love the results I get when I paint on panel with watercolor. And the good feeling just gets better when the panels are X-Panels. Their quality really ups my game. If you haven't watched Part 1 where I apply the ground, please go back and watch that. In this video I go into the ins and outs of watercolor painting on ground and show you the gradual buildup of color on this piece. I hope you enjoy this video!

Whether I am painting with watercolor or oil, I really love painting on X-Panels. They have a quality feel that is totally unique and after the first time I used one I found that my old substrates just no longer cut it! Here I will show you how I build the surface with Daniel Smith watercolor ground until I achieve the texture I want for the painting. My subject will be a pine marten - probably...
Paint a timber wolf in watercolor. Here are some painting and art tips and techniques you might try.
Просмотров 619Год назад
In this video, I show how I went about painting a timber wolf in watercolor. I'm using Arches 300# rough watercolor paper, and Schmincke and Daniel Smith paints. Even though my opinion of Schmincke paints has deflated over the years, I am still using them because I will not be replacing any colors until these are gone. Yep. I'm thrifty. I am using 4 different types of brushes. I talk about 3 of...

Tracing vs. Drawing. How I REALLY Feel
Просмотров 6284 года назад
Is tracing an image for a painting bad? Are you cheating because you trace to improve your art, and do you pretend you don't trace? Is it really OK? Is there an Art Nazi looking over your shoulder? Stop listening to that Art Nazi. In this video I lay it out plain and clear. Yes - you MAY trace at will if you so desire, and you also may feel good about who you are as an artist. Art Nazis go get ...

Who doesn't love Przewalski's Horses? I certainly do. Painting a Przewalski's horse in watercolor is a natural extension of that. In this video, I show you my entire painting process from the first brush stroke to the last.

A Beginner's Guide to Painting Water Drops in Watercolor Paint with Sandra J
So fun to watch Sandra! I love hearing others take on [products. The Silver Black Velvet are a real Squirrel hair mix with Synthetic. They trap squirrels too. Sad, I love Squirrels. I gave all my Princeton Neptune's away because I hated them. I ordered a lot and none had the best point and too soft. I have some sables also when I 1st started out years ago and rarely use them but do on occasion. Their death cannot be in vain so I use them. A couple real Sable quills that are good. I also will never buy another Sable hair brush. I have the Cosmotop spin too and I got rid of it. LOL! The Princeton Elite brushes are my go too now but still reach for my 1st , inexpensive Princeton, Heritage often. Don't worry. They don't kill the pig just for the hair. But when they go to market, to be slaughtered, they harvest everything they can from the animal, that's killed for the meat.
I'm glad to hear you are thinking about how your brushes are made. As artists, we have a responsibility to more than ourselves. I have begun to work much more in oils than watercolor these days but what I have found is a complete turn around from the days when I was chasing after the elusive brushes that would make me a better artist. These days (except for those first animal hair brushes I ignorantly bought), I use very cheap brushes, and I use them for both oil and watercolor. My brush collection is quite embarrassing, but now I just reach for Royal Langnickel Zen multimedia brushes, which sell for just a few dollars each. I love them for oils, and the rounds have a nice point for details. The more brush miles I put in the more I realize that nothing is going to make me a better artist except time.
I have Rosemary rounds and daggers, I do like them. I try to avoid most squirrel brushes, including Princeton Neptune, and most Silver Brush Black Velvet because they are limpy! They stay limpy in the middle of painting unless I immerse the brush in water and reload. You were trying Black Velvet #6 and flat (1/2"??). They seem springy. Are they still springy? Princeton Elite is a good brush. This line has a quill which holds quite a bit of water and much springier compared to Neptune. Perhaps this may be a good brush for washes in small medium you are using. I want to try Escoda Ultimo Mop because they are supposed to be better than Elite. What do you think?
Hi Windsurfer. I haven't had good luck with any of the Princeton Neptune's except for the largest rounds. Yes. I agree they are too mushy. I do still like my silver flats. However I have started oil painting much more than watercolor now so they aren't getting much use. People always have their favorite brands and that's great but I have learned that what suits an artist one day may not cut it the next (well almost). It is fun to try new materials! So I say if you are interested in a brush try it!
@@SandraJSchultz Hi Sandra, the Neptunes are designed only for glazing in watercolor if you are trying to avoid lifting the existing paint. You can sell them to me if you don't like them :-))
You were so clear in your explanations of each stage you went through, and I really appreciated that very much. It all made sense as you went through each step as well. I am going to attempt it and probably many times, but I'm so inspired after watching your tutorial. Thank You, Sandra.
I'm happy that the video helped you! Sandra J
Hello, the only corn in that website is DENT CORN, is that the same as Field corn?
Yes. I think so.
Thank you. The concept of the water drop as it relates to light and shadow was so important to me. A great lesson in how and why it’s painted to achieve a realistic droplet.
Yes! Understanding your subject is a huge part of painting it accurately. I'm glad I was able to help! Happy painting!! Sandra J
would rather see them paint not just listen to someone talk about them :/
I'm so glad I found your channel. Love your technique
One of the best tutorials on the subject. Very well explained. Thankyou
Actually, those animals used to make the brushes are raised in captivity- and just like cows, if people stop buying natural hair brushes or beef...these animals would likely go extinct, because there are few places left where there remains enough of their natural environment to support them in the wild- so the humane thing to do is to actually buy animal products. Seriously, how is it any worse than them getting eaten by predators in the wild? I LOVE animals...but this whole 'don't use animal products' thing is really unrealistic, and a product of the minds (however well-intentioned) of people who have never really thought it through).
In Russia, most are still trapped the old fashioned way.
@@Renilou2 Ah, so that's why the Russians make the best Kolinsky sable watercolor brushes!
Michael’s has Royal & Langnickel. Fabulous and under $13 for a set of five!!!
I see you sketched the Egret out first. Zink White. I tried to find Zink White , but others also like it, and usually the area for that White paint is empty. I like your choice of Music, some use a sleepy, soft romantic music , that puts me to sleep. I like go beat when I work that is full of ENERGY. However, I can see why their music works for them, because I tried it when working on more delicate parts,
Crikey Daniel Smith will not suit my style at all might try Smincke but you can't beat the old paints for watercolour landscapes
You know Silver Black Velvet brushes use a combination of animal & synthetic bristles. Nice brushes but I don’t buy them anymore 🥲
I don’t like the Cosmo top spin brushes either - no point. Trader Joe’s 👍😁. Thank you for sharing
I have the same problem with long handles. I like Silver black belt and Mimick kolinsky. I don't like nNeptunes, too compound
Try using a canning funnel to fill your ziploc bags. Place the funnel in the top and hold it down while you put in the first spoonful. It should then stand by itself. Then gently lift the funnel up as the bag is filled. I do this all the time when I fill freezer bags with chopped peppers. Very easy and less messy.
Excellent suggestion!
No one comments about synthetic brushes being plastic (vinyl is plastic) and plastic is made from petroleum. Also, think about all the microscopic plastic fibers that break off and become part of the food chain. Hmmmm.
I know. Maybe the solution is to paint with our fingers. As I'm aging I do seem to be reverting!! :)))
Yes, i think of this often. Have to stop using so much plastics! So why is our detergents, canned goods, beverages in plastics now? Didn't used to be in my day. Its causing more havoc than plastics that are kept and used for a very long time.
I keep hens for eggs, just love them. Love the way you are painting this chicken, Thank you so much. p.s. I'm a Sandra J also
Thank you Sandra J! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Very nice tutorial. I learn somethimg new every day. Bless You
Hello! I'm glad you enjoyed! Thank you for watching!
YOU CAN RESURFACE THEM WITH WHITE CHEAP CAR PAINT
White Nights blend, but you have to pre mix them with water first. They are made with honey, so you can't use them straight from the pan. They don't flow that way.
Your Neptune wash brushes on smaller paintings use them for skys only and premixed washes for your sky you can also drop in sixe these brushes and they work very well Try a panting with an 1.5 flat. Then try a painting with an 1.5” a3/4” flat then a number three rigger I learn water colour with these three sizes and the Irish artists book water colour paint box and after the 9 lessons in the book I sold my first water colour using his limited palette of 8 colours
Excellent advise! I now paint almost exclusively with flats!😁
I have mastered water droplets, but I have learned also with this video.
Great! I'm glad it helped!
Out of curiosity, why do you discourage heat dryer and use of paper towel for soakage? TYSM for this video.
I was talking about a hair dryer that blows paint and may (probably will) negatively impact the natural movement of your paint.
@@SandraJSchultz right, of course.
Best water droplet video I’ve seen, enjoy that you are teaching with speech also and just not drawing. Also enjoyed the roasting coffee video! 👍🇺🇸
Thank you Joy. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos!

Это восхитительно!!!🤩
Thank you!!
I have a brush addiction issue; cheap and expensive lol
I know about that! I started out that way and have a ton of them! So I use the cheap ones! Haha
Hello how are you doing?
Wot crap is this video 😂
You have to be more patient with the pans, you have to soak them more to get more pigment out.
Loved this! Great explanations, concise, informative & superb demo. Thanx. 🇨🇦
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it!
Thanks for your help today
Thank you for NOT using animal hair brushes & thank you for sharing your likes & dislikes in brushes 🙏
