For non-Tamil speakers, Interview with Shyam at 45min.40sec and Deepa at 1hrs.01sec I'm sorry but I don't know any Sri Lankans who speak Tamil who think the language was perfect. Btw I am a Tamil living in Colombo and personally, I found it painful to hear the language spoken so badly. It is telling that Deepa rather defensively passes the buck to Cheran who admits the language is not correct and then passes the buck on to Shyam, even mentioning thrice that Shyam himself doesn't speak Tamil and couldn't have known, and admits that scenes were changed in the movie (which I assume are the scenes about police deterring rioters or helping people affected by the riots)

Great insight and all or most questions are explained and answered. It was a difficult journey. Deepa and Shyam should very proud a great achievement. In the end Cheran explains variant Tamil and how he handled it and it very good of him to say all three languages should be used to make this film work. Dubbing was done as best as they could within Covid restrictions.Overall I think it was an excellent output. Give a few years and perhaps there could be a sequel story. For the perfectionist perhaps a funny boy II with all the Canadian pundits can muster.

After listening to this I feel there needs to be a movie on the making of funny boy. There are three primary players here, the author who does not speak Tamil, the director who does not speak Tamil, the consultant who says the author should be responsible. So we broke Deepa heart? Cry me a river Deepa.

I listened to the whole conversation. Unfortunately I have neither read the book nor watched the movie. But it looks like Tamil diaspora in Canada has legitimate issues with this movie. It might not affect the overall reception and recognition of this movie since most of it is going to reach non SL Tamil audience. I can clearly sense the issues are casting and the use of Tamil language and to some extent perception of the Tamil's cause of displacement. Language can be rectified by dubbing but casting cannot. There were so many barriers in completing this movie. I didn't know why they thought this movie had to be made in SL? They could have selected other locations like Kerala. Definitely Metha and her team has made some compromises for this movie to be shot in SL even though she vehemently denies it. I can understand that being a north indian she has to rely on her team especially from SL on making decisions. During interview she became upset and defensive which I didn't like. My feeling is everyone worked to satisfy her rather than pointing the reality and ground situation. She was putting bulk of the responsibilities with Cheran. I communicated with him one on one. He took charge only the tamil language script with some flexibility to suite casting. She was with Shyam and local artists in Colombo, shot the bulk of the movie. Unfortunately Shyam was not familiar with Tamil language or culture even though this movie was presented as Tamil. Later when they found out things were going wrong they again approached Cheran for corrections and dubbing at last minute. Apparently he did the best within a short time but not to his full satisfaction. All in all they may have rushed this movie for their benefits especially the credentials and awards. Ultimately they may achieve that but at the expenses of reaping full benefits for the Tamil people with it's potential. 🙏
