April Reading Wrap Up // mostly "meh" disappointing books
I just stumbled upon your channel and I’m so excited to have found you, and by extension some great book recommendations! Marmie sounds so wonderful, it will definitely accompany my next annual little women reread
Memoirs of a Geisha was an amazing book, and I was underwhelmed by the movie. Northanger Abbey is my #2 Austen, and I only have one left - Mansfield Park - which I really want to read this year.
North and south is my favorite by Elizabeth Gaskell.
Yay ! I binged the Silo trilogy after season 1, loved it, esp Shift, getting to see the origin of the situation! So glad you Iiked it!
I really like when the day comes
Love your haircut! I liked Little Women. Definitely interested in reading Marmee.
ohhhh so sad to hear you didn't get along with Black Woods Blue Sky. I may still give it a try but it may not be a priority. I have a few Jodi Picoult's still on my shelf. One of them might be Plain Truth. I need to read Maeve Binchy! Might have to add Marmee to my TBR. 😊💙
Disappointed to hear about Eowyn Iveys book, I’ve been looking forward to it but I don’t like weird books so I’ll probably skip it. Thanks to you continuing to talk about Maisie Dobbs I’m listening to the series and enjoying it!
Really enjoyed your recommendations, and I always enjoy hearing about your child and middle grade recs too!
Thank you, Jessie! 💕
I haven't started the Masie Dobbs series, but I want to. I loved Only The Beautiful. Books I own of a buddy read interests you is A Fall of Marigolds, From Sand To Ash, Apples Never Fall, I Was Anastasia. I do have Voxer and am very flexible with buddy reading. If interested, let me know.
I absolutely would love to buddy read! Let's do it. I'm "gzthompson" on there. We can do one in March or April. Let's start a chat and we can pick our book and month on there. 😊
@GloriaZThompson I found you and added. Thanks!
5:12 ugh I hated that book too
I'm so so happy you loved Marmee❤ I can definitely see that comparison with Martha Ballard!
Ok yay! I'm a little more removed from reading Frozen River so happy to hear you'd agree.
I have Miracle Man on my TBR, but I've never heard of Go and Do Likewise so I'll have to look for that one. Marmee sounds like such a good book too! Glad you found some books you enjoyed, even if some of them didn't work out.
Love your reviews
Thank you, Cindy!
💕
Ooooo! Wildflower Emily! 😮
I love anything by Maeve Binchy!! A Week❤ in Winter was great!! I love Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs books!!
What's another Binchy book you'd recommend?
Yay!! Marmee!! I could do without the sex scenes though. It’s like this author has to do it for shock value with each book!
That was Maeve binchys last book before she died. I never read it but i loved others by her!
I've not heard of her before December, but am intrigued to try more from her. Which ones are favorites for you?
@ the books I read aren’t part of a series but I think they should be seen as one because there are recurring characters. So here’s the order I’d go. Evening class, Tara road, scarlet feather, Quentin’s, nights of rain and stars, white thorn woods, heart and soul, and minding Frankie. A week in winter was written after all those and they in publication order. So I wonder if we see the same characters in a week in winter. I never read that one. So I guess you go in publication order.
@ ok good to know! Thanks for the tip.
I read a lot of Amish books so I liked plain truth.
I wonder if I’ll like the Laura Dave book. I own it and now I wish I had just borrowed it from the library.
I also didn’t love these Silent woods! I felt like he was very selfish and it was hard for me to feel sorry for him! And what he did to her grandparents? I get you love your kid and all but… no!!
Yes, agree 100%!
Your hair is amazing! That's the cut I prefer although I don't style like that (unfortunately 'cause I love that style!!)! The book about Marmee sounds good as I love Little Women! 😊
Thank you! 💕
P.S. forgot to tell you, like your haircut!😁
Thank you! 💕
I DNF’d Black Woods Blue Sky but I could definitely see giving it the same rating had I finished. Incredibly dark and weird. Yes! I have a six year old and that is not at all the way they speak haha
Ok glad I'm not the only one! It was too weird. Such a bummer when an anticipated release doesn't work well.
Black Woods Blue Sky was also high on my anticipated reads. I have it on hold and will give it a try but I’m definitely guarded now. I DNF’d To the Bright Edge of the World twice, it feels so bleak and exemplifies why I don’t normally like magical realism. Also, I’ve GOT to check out Marmee! I think I’ll read it alongside a couple of nonficfions about her I’ve been meaning to read, one is more of a biography of her and Louisa and the other is her letters.
Yes, don't be afraid to DNF Black Woods, Blue Sky if you aren't feeling it because it's definitely the weirdest out of her three books. Bright Edge also felt bleak and this newest one has a similar vibe. I can't make up my mind about magical realism, but I don't think it's for me the more I read about it. On the other hand, Marmee was incredible, hope you love it too!
sorry you had a few hated books 🙁 I read Plain Truth so many years ago - but can't remember what I thought about it. I loved the pictures in Clover and the Emily Dickinson story/book looks like such fun! I have Marmee on my TBR - love that cover too.
Most of these I haven't read, but I have read Plain Truth. I couldn't find the empathy at the end, either! But I just looked up the Hendrix books and Wildflower Emily. No luck in our provincial library system. I do want to read Marmee! Glad to hear you loved it. I have March by Geraldine Brooks on hand and haven't read it yet. Have you?
I need to find the Wildflower Emily book! Looks fabulous ❤
Thank you, Cindy!
Oh no. That Ivey book sounds very weird. Thank you for the review. I might skip it.
Yes, a beastiality component too which is ugh. It was just too disturbing to be enjoyable.
@GloriaZThompson 🤢🤢
I also LOVED Marmee.
I just finished The Book Thief yesterday. This was definitely a wonderful book to read from cover to cover. Salt to the Sea is also a great read! Thanks for sharing.
I need a reread of Book Thief, but glad it still holds up after all these years!
Just finished The Frozen River. It will probably end up in my top reads for 2025. Gonna add marmee to my list. I’ll be looking at doing Middle Grade March with you.
So glad you loved Frozen River!
OH DANG!!! I was looking forward to Black Woods Blue Sky, but no longer. It sounds horrible. I think I'll take it off my library request list....Thanks for the heads up on this one!
It was just so weird and disturbing, I don't think it's worth it. A bit of a beastiality thing going on too. Just disappointing.
OMG! That's the last thing I need to read about!
Marmee was my first book of 2025, and it’s still my favorite read so far. Love the short hair. ❤
@@jenndflash One of my firsts too, and I’m so happy! It’ll definitely be on the favorite lists for the year. Love when that happens.
Love the shorter hair! ❤💇♀️ I have Marmee on my Goodreads list, but your review has me wanting to read it sooner rather than later! Thanks!
Thank you! 💕 Oh it was sooo good, hope you enjoy it when you pick it up (no pressure)!
@GloriaZThompson 🤗Thanks!
Marmee was one of my favorite books of the year a couple years ago! I’m glad you loved it!
@@JennaSmith-o4i It was so wonderful and loved reading it this time of year too. ❄️
For a long time I've thought that Marmee from Little Women and Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird are the best parents ever written in novels. It's so wholesome that Harper Lee based Atticus Finch off of her own father and Louisa May Alcott based Marmee off of her own mother.
I have read Marmee, too. Also Caroline and Marilla. Marilla was my favorite and I think you'd like it also❤
I need to reread To Kill a Mockingbird (read it in high school), but have heard that.
Thanks for the tip Carla! I will definitely get to Marilla and then Caroline after I read the Little House books.
I read The Frozen River in Jan. I did not like it at all. The only redeeming part of book was Martha and her husband's marriage. For me, it was ruined by the explicit detail of 2 men raping a woman. I DO NOT read books where women and children are abused. I have Marmee because I am a HUGE Alcott fan. Little Women has been my favorite book since I was 12. I collect nice editions of it and re-read every 2/3 yrs. I have been in Orchard House many, many times as I grew up in Lexington Massachusetts (Revolutionary War started there) and went to a private h.s. in Concord. Alcott is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetary in a section called Author's Ridge. She is next to Thoreau and Emerson, if I remember correctly. I LOVE epistolary bks. Louis as father was a real jerk and did not provide for his family. Emerson paid their rent the ENTIRE time they lived at Orchard House. At the end of their lives, Louisa took her father to live in her place in Boston. She died the very next day after him.
Eileen -- I lived in Acton, MA for a few years growing up ( 1971-1976 ) before moving to Hanover MA. I have a niece that teaches in Lexington too - what a community here on You-Tube. I have Frozen River to read - but may have to skip over the parts you reference 😐
When you said Marmee reminded you of Martha Ballard, I was sold! Immediately went and ordered that book! I loved The Frozen River, so much and just read it this past January.
I hope you see the comparison too when you pick up Marmee! It's also told in a similar diary entry kind of way.
Good to know about the Eowyn Ivey book! I was wondering if it would be too weird for me & yes, sounds like it would be!
Yes, if you don't like "weird," then I would definitely skip.
Love your haircut!
@@natashachesney178 Thank you!
Love children’s literature and graphic novels thanks for sharing ❤
@@ChakaLovesToRead No problem! Thanks for saying hi.
I'd like to read the Marmee book.
@@clarepotter7584 Please do! And I hope you love it like I did.
Clover looks so cute!!! 🥰
Such a fun little picture book find! Love when that happens.
Love love the haircut!! ❤ & also agree I think more blonde would look so good!
@@WhitneysReadingJourney Thank you! 💕
Have you ever read March by Geraldine Brooks ? Any thoughts about that one ?
@@michaelreeney81 No but I own it, and after reading Marmee I want to pick up March. I’m just waiting for the audiobook to come in on Libby. Otherwise I would have read it in January immediately after finishing Marmee to compare the two. Keep an eye out for a review of it hopefully soon.
March is a really good book! I loved it!
Love the Jesus picture books🙌🙏🏻
They were fantastic reads!
I love your haircut! It looks great!
Thank you! 💕
I love how no nonsense you are if you find a book to be pointless❤. Thank you for being real
Always will be! I have no issues being “unpopular” with my opinion.
