Is This The Most Spectacular Drive in Scotland?
Hi Everyone!
If you watch my channel, you will know I travelled on the fantastic Bealach Na Ba road | Pass of the Cattle, or Applecross Pass as commonly known recently. You can check out my other video a few weeks ago if you like :)
In this video I film the drive back, from Applecross over the pass, and down back to near the village of Kishorn. It was too good to only film it one way😁 I preferred the drive back, West to East. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below 👇
I’ve not done any major editing on this one, just some music and the stunning drive. I’ve left the view to do the talking 😀

Hi Everyone :) 😀 If you watched my previous video, you'll know I recently went on a short, but sweet, day trip to the Isle of Mull. Taking in the sights of the rugged mountains, sea , beaches and some excellent hospitality. I obviously had the camera with me, so thought I'd film some of the roads I was driving when exploring new places. In the video, you'll see me driving from near Dervaig, on ...

Mushroom Foraging in the West Coast of Scotland
Just watched it again 🙂 The music's great too. Have you ever wondered why it is called Applecross? I have been enchanted by that name, but do not know its origins, I'm sure it has nothing to do with apples! ... The road reminds me of our Desert Road in NZ, which has a similar barren, snow landscape, and drops down to a lake (loch) - Lake Taupo. But that is SH1 - our main highway, so not quite so challenging for drivers. We have 3 mountains (volcanoes), but not like yours .... I think your video of the road to Loch Etive is the best, most beautiful .... that is how I came to your site. 🙂
@barbarathomas2561 from the archives they've said that bealach na ba is Gaelic for pass of the cattle ....Applecross got it's name from its origin Aber crossan which Iver time changed to Applecross
It would appear your question has been answered Barbara :) Its a brilliant road. Steeped in history. We have had some very heavy snowfall across the highlands in the last week, and I believe the road was closed for a while. Thank you, I’ll be back up to Glen Etive soon. Waiting for the next snowfall to capture it all ❄️ 😁
Wonderful - but you seem to go v fast - is the film sped up or is it just a trick of the camera? And how do drivers know to pull off when someone is coming in the opposite direction, you can't always see ahead, can you? Thanks so much 🙂
I'm from the US but have visited Scotland many times. It's seems crazy, but the speed limit on most of the B roads and single track is 60 MPH. It really take some getting used to ( there's almost never a shoulder). Having said that it's pretty impressive how well the system works. The Scots know when to pull over and most people respect the other drivers. Sometimes you have to back up a bit but it's no big deal. This system would NEVER work in the US, too much aggression.
@@rollingpuck Interesting comment. I'm in NZ - ppl can be pretty aggressive here too unfortunately. Thanks.
Hi Barbara, wasn’t going particularly fast, maybe 30-35mph at the most, it does always seem faster when you film on a single track road. That’s a good question, to be honest normally just instinct. I have driven single track roads since I passed my test at 17, so it’s just normal to me. I can see why some get daunted by it, especially as normally they are used to big wide roads.
Here is a tip for drivers who have never been there, so of course on one track roads use the passing places to allow cars coming towards you to pass, most people understand that, but the passing places should also be used to allow traffic behind you to get passed you if you are slow moving. So for example if you are a campervan and you are labouring up the steep incline with a large queue of traffic crawling behind you, the etiquette is that you should just pull into a passing place for 45 seconds and let the traffic get passed you. Even if you have one car behind you who is looking to get passed, just pull in and let them get passed. Many visitors are either not aware that this is expected or are unwilling....there is no room for any competitiveness or thoughtless driving on these roads, it causes frustration, especially for local drivers. Drive safe and be thoughtful towards your fellow road users.
Great tips Chris 👍
If u love the rugged landscape and drive you should go to lewis/Harris...or have u already been ?
Hi, I’ve been to Lewis in Harris but not in years. My favourite is Harris. It’s stunning, and the beaches are the best you’ll experience anywhere in the world. I regularly travel to South Uist, where I have family. The landscape is barren and rugged, but much flatter compared to Lewis and Harris.
@coasttocoast23 I'm more obsessed with the real remote islands I mean I love the Highlands, outer and inner hebrides.....I'd love to explore eigg ..foula rona but I don't do water unless it's over a bridge 😆 nae ferries .... but honestly we have so much land so many places steeped in history it's unreal ....I'd love to visit the wee italian chapel on Orkney
This doesn’t look like Keswick…
London is the capital of England is this a joke ?
The ‘Outdoor’ Capitial.
We drove the road to the Isles 4 weeks ago tomorrow...soo much easier to drive to Mallaig (Glenfinnan aside) than it was years ago before the road was upgraded. First time I went in 1989 it was single track most of the way after Lochailort. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks mate. It’s a brilliant drive. The road is fantastic compared to what it used to be.
Another great wee video such beautiful scenery ...I cannot wait to move further up scotland you're living my dream
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed it!
I've always loved that bus journey - thanks for sharing it here. It's a shame it only runs twice a day, really - especially if they're using that bus, which I was briefly on 2 years ago, on Mull. It must be hell when it's full of tourists bound for Iona!! I've walked over the old Cregan Railway Bridge, as it also carried a footpath that remained for 20 or more years after the railway closed - then hitched a lift in a police range rover, as far as Ballachulish Bridge! I assume you know that the doctor's surgery in Ballachulish is a conversion of the old railway station? Also, the platform of the one at Ballachulish Ferry can still be seen behind the roundabout at the south end of the bridge - and the one at Kentallen is part of the hotel there?? Another, really scenic bus trip from Fort William is the weekday service to Kilchoan, incidentally. It goes over on the Corrran Ferry, then via Strontian and Acharacle... Connects with the last ferrry to Tobermory, too.
Thanks Paul, Its a very nice journey. Indeed I do, on one of my previous videos I pointed it out I think. Its nice to see they have kept that railway station theme very much alive in the building. I have not investigated the platforms at Ballachullish or Kentallen, however often walk my dog across the old Appin railway station, which is on the cycle path past castle stalker. Basically the cycle path from Oban to Fort William just runs on much of where the old railway line used to be.
@coasttocoast23 Ballachulish platforms have gone. Rails did extend into the slate quarry by the foot of the sloped rock surface. Kentallen station is actually built into the structure of the hotel - it's the bit with the semi-circular windows furthest from the road; as they built another bit in a similar style in front, then extended the whole thing again! Connel Bridge was purely a rail bridge as built - for the first few years, they ran a charabanc on them as far as Benderloch; then started the shared arrangement about 1913, I think. This lasted until closure - with road vehicles not allowed to cross at the same time as a train was doing so. It competed to a small extent with the Bonawe Ferry.
Done that in a motorhome its not that bad
Spectacular place to take a motor home Geoff 👍
@coasttocoast23 trick is keep your eyes closed let the wife drive

Good value for a scenic trip.
Have travelled this route many times, but not by bus, since the late 70's. It is interesting how the route has evolved to take up, in places, the route and bridge of the railway. Also how a lot of the hillside tree plantations are now gone, the views steadily changing with the years.
Most risky thing is letting your tyres drop off the tarmac: those sharp edges will shred the inner wall 😬
Don’t miss castle arghh from monty Python. Go by car. If Oban is packed pop back to poppies and get a wonderful view of dunusfage marina whilst having lunch.,
Kyle of Lochalsh to Fort Willian (916) please. I don't see being able to afford to hop the pond again and that is one of my favorites.
Will try my best, great to get recommendations from everyone, keep them coming! Thanks, Liam
Hi Liam, I only recently discovered your channel. Thank you for all the impressions. They will help me to bridge the six months until my motorbike trip to Scotland in May 2025 and to take a look at the many beautiful landscapes I will be riding through. Greetings from Germany, Willi
Hi Willi, Welcome to the channel, and I hope you have a fantastic trip in May next year. In my experience May is one of the best months for good weather, especially on the West Coast. So I hope you get lucky with that too. Even if it’s not, Scotland is amazing. If you need any hints or tips, just give me a message and will happily try and help :) Thanks, Liam
@ Hi Liam, Thanks for coming back. Supposedly it rains the least in May and the midges in the Highlands aren't that annoying yet. I'll check out both. I travelled to Scotland with a tour group a few years ago, but this time I'm exploring the most beautiful corners of your home country on my own, slowly and with plenty of time. I won't be able to see everything during four weeks, but there will be a lot of impressions. Cheers, Willi
Hope you have a great time Willi!
lovely wee drive up to Applecross , i used to deliver garden sheds to the locals in my 18 tonner up the cattle pass road
Doesn’t sound like a bad place to be delivering Tom :)
It's not dangerous at all. It's a lovely scenic road. We did it on a motorbike last year.
Great video best I've seen of that road, drove it before and it's not as bad as its made out I enjoyed the drive
Thanks Shirley, glad you enjoyed it. Was a bit tongue in cheek when I was saying I was scared 😀 But it is some height, area and surroundings. I can’t wait to get back. Liam
Once met a 6 wheeler fuel truck on the hairpins but I was on a motorcycle so it was OK. Some times there is a star attraction. The waters across from Applecross exceed 1000ft deep and is a sheltered body of water with a defendable entries. This allows the Navy to test its submarines, including opening of missile hatches 'on the quiet' and under water. A test not acceptable in open waters as you do not know who is listening and could start a war. The road back to the north is also worth the trip and can make it a round route back to Kishorn.
Thanks Brian that is fascinating . Yes I also believe Raasay is used in military training for the marines. It’s a wild, exposed area, and must test people to their limit. I wanted to have a look at the Kishorn Port but was short on time. I do love the Song Kishorn Commandos 😀
Also there is an alternative route for those who may have larger vehicles or less experienced drivers
Absolutely, if I’d had more time on this day I would have driven back that. Apparently a beautiful road round the coast😀
Another great video and lots of memories for me. I drove it in the same direction on a clearer day and had lunch at the inn :)
Thanks John, unfortunately that’s what I missed out on..will get to the Inn next time 🤞🏻
Stop being a drama queen nothing wrong with the road
The road is daunting but it's not particularly dangerous - the M8 is another matter...

And I thought we were over the worst of it being November John!
Enjoyed your video, thank you. We did chicken out in June, we were having enough trouble on single track roads in Skye as first time American drivers, but would love to have seen this area. Scotland is magnificent, I'll remember it forever.❤
@@pattymoore8351 Thanks Patty. I can imagine it could be daunting especially considering some of the wide roads you have in the states. If you can pluck up the courage next time the scenery is fabulous. Thanks, Liam
@@coasttocoast23 We'll see! I so hope to return. For now we'll tour vicariously through RUclips ❤
I have travelled this road to Glen Etive & it seems a lot longer than I expected it, but that was years & years ago, when I was on it years ago it seemed like just an hour then it came to a complete stop at Loch Etive.
It goes on and on John. I forgot how long it was myself. It’s 45 mins minimum from the main road at Glencoe to the end at loch Etive
It's a Highland Coo.
Similar in colour to the wild Haggis, which of course are much smaller and harder to spot 😊
That's not Glencoe Village at the start of the video - that's Tigh Phuirt which is between Glencoe and Ballachulish.
Never heard of it
Drove this road for the first time a couple days ago it was the best road ever
I love it. Can’t wait to get back!
Amazing place ❤
Brilliant , I’ll be up there in June can’t wait to be back 👍🦌🌲
It’s a fabulous place Chrissy, have a great time!
Another brilliant video, well done again.
Thanks mate 👌🏻
It's an incredible place to walk and drive through but I personally prefer to enter after leaving Rannoch moor behind so the sun isn't in my eyes. Even if I'm going up to the east side of the highlands I'll always take the A82 up to Spean Bridge and then cut across via the A86 to the A9 at Kingussie. It's a much prettier run than along past Loch Ness. I'll be doing it all again at the end of October.
That’s a beautiful drive up there John. Might feature it on the channel soon.. I’m often up Kingussie/ Aviemore way. Love it.
You need to clean the screen to stop the camera focusing on the muck! 😊
Needs to stop waving the mic around too as the sound can be challenging 😁
Apologies, never realised at the time!

I recall climbing the Lost Valley as a child: there was a gigantic block up there with ‘the Devil’s footprints’ on it. ❤. Snowpoles still alongside the road. Is there still the full Highland dress Piper at the western end?
Indeed Linda, he was there last week when I was up

Cheers Niall 😀
I’ve driven across much of the western Highlands and the islands and you have to adapt to the style of driving. That’s not a problem provided you can reverse! Mull though is terrible to drive on. The roads are in a very poor state and there is a reasonable volume of traffic at holiday times. I would never take a car there these days unless I absolutely had to.
Agreed, some of the roads are in a shocking state. If I lived there I would definitely own a 4x4. I managed to avoid many tyre busting potholes. I’m sure many tourists have fell victim to the roads there.
Beautiful
💚
This summer every day seems like the spring thaw. All the spring gullies in Glencoe are full of rain water most of time.
There’s one very short length of dual carriageway on Mull, near Glenforsa , at about 37.00, but both sections are still single track.
Enjoyed this video enormously..
Glad you enjoyed it!
The road from Carnoch Bridge near Strontian to Lochaline, and many of the roads on Mull were reconstructed in the 1960s. We tried to ensure that drivers could see at least two lay-bys at any one time, and made them a reasonable size. The bridge at 6.09 was designed by a friend and colleague, and a nearby one by me.
Like most highland roads you need to 'read' the road. Passing places are mostly positioned for a purpose other than passing. They indicate a blind bend or brow, ignore and your in the ditch or worse and its a long way to a garage or hospital. If in doubt follow a local or postman. Also if you want to see the scenery get off the road and stop and not in a passing place. In season when there are a lot of tourist coaches they have there own one way system round the isle so they do not approach head to head, most passing places are only one coach long. I have been a number of times over the years as day trips from Fort William. Because of the scale of the place, it is a problem of is it a Buzzard close up, Golden Eagle middle distance or Sea eagle far away? There also a lot of sea creatures, in season, to see, Basking shark in late summer, small whales, otter, etc.. But you can not see everything in a day. So a lot of day trips, A week will give you much, Two weeks will give you most.
Thanks for comment Brian, I think buzzard, but I have seen many Sea Eagle over there. Haven’t seen a golden yet in Morvern. I’ve seen them in the Cairngorms. Majestic creatures!
Amazing. You actually found it working when you needed it!
This is a useful video for anyone planning to travel this type of road for the first time who isn't sure of the protocol. As a single driver, it's good for me too because I get to see the scenery. Thank you. As I sit here comfortably watching your videos I'll get the shock of my life when I see my car approaching me!
