I Remember Radio

In 1964 Murray the Record Promoter makes his usual stop at K/MEN in San Bernardino.
It was October of 1964, and the Inland Empire was in the crosshairs of eager record promoters. These promoters knew that if they could get a record to chart in the Inland Empire, it would catch the attention of major Los Angeles stations, offering a golden opportunity for greater exposure. At the time, K/MEN was trouncing its competitor KFXM in the ratings, thanks to a powerful lineup that included Huckleberry Chuck Clements, Marc Denis, William F. Williams, Bill Watson, Brian Lord, Ray Morgen, and Jim Mitchell.
One afternoon, a record promoter named Murray made his usual stop at K/MEN, but this time he brought his son (who had just turned 20) along. Murray was there to push a new record f...

93 KHJ-Sam Riddle. The lost interview. Recorded 8 months before his death.
Просмотров 4346 месяцев назад
Until 2 weeks ago, I thought this Interview with Sam Riddle was lost forever. It is presumably the last interview Sam ever did, recorded 8 months before he died. . The reason I thought it was lost is my associate who recorded and was engineering the video, Billy Smith, also died. I was unable to access Billy's files after he died. . 2 weeks ago I was chatting with Ken Levine (who hosted this pr...

Reliving KMET Sunday evenings at 6 PM with Dr. Demento
Просмотров 7410 месяцев назад
It was early 1972 I discovered Dr. Demento on KMET. He did not fit in with their programming but that was OK. I continued listening for many years after. As I remember he was on Sunday evenings from 6-10. I reconstructed what the first 20 minutes of his show sounded like from memory, and I also attributed his website as the inspiration. It's amazing how those songs are seared into my brain. So ...

Godspeed, Chris Roberts. Over 50 years of broadcasting distinction from KFXM to UCLA remembered.

I received a phone call this afternoon from Jhani Kaye that made me very sad. Hall of fame sports broadcaster (and Jhani’s close friend for over 50 years) the voice of UCLA sports Chris Roberts departed us this morning. Having done a few programs with Chris, I found he was a warm, extremely likeable fun and funny guy. Rather than dribble on I just edited a recording we made 2 years with Chris. ...
3 KFXM DJs working consecutive shifts 50 years ago all went on to have HUGE careers in Radio reunite

It is very possible that there have never been 3 Disc Jockeys in a secondary market working consecutive shifts that all went on to have such giant careers as the 3 legends in this video. Jhani Kaye was born in East Los Angeles, raised in Hemet, and is considered by many as one of the true geniuses of radio, Kaye refined the idea of flow as it pertains to the sound of a radio station. Sam Riddle's last recording with David McGiffert recorded in January of 2021
Thanks.
Sam Riddle was lucky to be picked by Debbie Duncan in the Jet Set contest and was off to Hawaii! RIP Sam and all the original Boss Jocks. I have that book on digital format!
I grew up in the Central Valley of California. On AM radio we could hear KFI, KNX, and KMPC. Our stations on cable at the time were 5, 9, 11 and 13. My favorite traffic reporter to listen to was Bruce Wayne-KFI In The Sky! That’s how I would know how the freeways are, mostly Interstate 5 over the Grapevine. Bruce Wayne was my go to guy! I listened through my high school life. Two days before I graduated, Bruce’s plane crashed at Fullerton Airport. I was deeply saddened. I listened to other reporters, mostly Mike Nolan and Mark Denis. Even Bill Keene. I went to college here in Orange County, got married and, moved away. Once back in So. Cal, I was a traffic tipster for Tommy Jaxson, and Jim Thornton. Thanks to Tommy, I met Mike O’Brien over the air. Tommy retired, and I continued my reporting to Jennifer York. One day, she had me wait until she talked to Mike. I belted out, Tell Mike That Tipster Rod Says Hello! We had a good laugh. Thank You, all for the memories of days gone by Like my CHP friends say, This is Tipster Rod, Going 10-10! (Off Duty)
ICONIC
I worked for Sonny Bono and Nancy Sinatra blocked me on Twitter...We have something in common.
Bruce Wayne was the Honorary Mayor of the City of Buena Park. Sadly it was also the city where he died.
Great interview! The late Paul Drew back in the early 70’s sent me an air check of Jim Carson when he was doing mornings at KFRC along with one of Frank Terry. Sadly they both got washed away by hurricane Katrina. Later in my radio career I got the chance to meet Paul Drew when I was out of work as he let me go free to his radio negotiations seminar in Houston if I could find a way to get there which I did and another friend me stay at their house. Never worked for Paul but have the ultimate respect for him in so many ways!
Very cool tribute to you Jahni! Thanks for showing me around LA so long ago!
Mike… so happy the connection was made to do this interview. Ken really brought him out! Plenty of great stories about Sam!
It is to know he passed away. I always listen to K Earth on Saturdays. May the angels guide him to his next journey. Unique voice.
Fantastic interview! I grew up near Fresno and Boss Radio KYNO was the #1 station we all listened! Jim Carson was a great Boss Jock and more importantly a good person. I never had the pleasure to meet him in person but always heard him for years at KRTH101! He would for years, every birthday day of mine, say nice thoughts on Facebook up to 2023. I was so sad to hear of his passing. May he spin the hits in heaven! Thank you Dick Lyons and Jim Carson!
I am sad to see him go. I was lucky enough to have met him about two years ago and we shared many beers and spoke often since then. I'll miss him. A more kind and intelligent soul you'll never find. Truly a legend.
This was GREAT! The stories! I loved Jim Carson first time I heard him doing mornings on KFRC. Great war stories about radio. I really enjoyed this show. A+
Thanks for posting. I use to talk to you durring those phone freak days, do you remember.
Jim has passed away. An amazing guy, baseball encyclopedia mind both minor and major leagues.
Light of my life, Wow! It was my favorite part of the old show. Around 6:00am you could here the rerun from the day befores episode. It was so great to hear the recordings on RUclips. I remember an evening stand up show featuring L & B at Magic Mountain. They were such a good comedy duo. How Al could keep track of all his charactors during the radio program always amazed me. What a talent!
Boy did this video bring back some old memories. I believe "Sweet Dick" worked for KFI during the Catalina Invasion only because Bruce Wayne, KFI in the sky led the attack air force. The bombs used were cotton balls. What a great event. Second, also at KFI was the dinner in the LA River. Sweet Dick was a great entertainer also. Thanks for the memories!
total shot in the dark vain attempt to ask, was it KINK that had the TV ad in the early 90s, that had pictures of different food tied to different music, and at one point showed Kenny G with vanilla ice cream? It could have been k103 or q95.. speaking of the former, would love to find the k103 "special to be with you" jingle..
Dick Whittington has a small part in the movie Duel. That's where I first knew him from
I grew up in San Bernardino and studied music at San Bernardino Valley College (1974-77). I remember the Swing Auditorium. It was destroyed when a plane crashed into it in 1981.
I was one of Dick's "regular" callers on a radio show he did (Rotten Vicious 9-year-old Kid). Dick took me on a tour of his station (different than L&B at the time) and then I was allowed to tour Lohman and Barkley's station with them, too. I see that this may have been from Dick's friendship with Al Lohman from what he says here. I later learned that many little boys were calling shows pretending to be me, but Dick's central premise was because I was the polar opposite to what he named me, so them trying to call in and be nasty to people didn't work at all.
I used to call Jim at KIQQ every single day after school and request Wildfire, and he'd always ask me how my day was. I eventually got to meet him in person at a celebrity softball game. Great memories!
Dick Whittington was radio gold, and at the beginning of this interview he made what I thought was a very astute observation, that most radio people are extroverted introverts. As someone who was influenced by L & B in the early 70s, I too went into the radio business, got to be a DJ and did all sorts of radio jobs. But I have often described myself to other as being an extroverted introvert which is why I really embraced his comment. Man, those were the days in L.A. radio with all these great personalities.
Jim was the first jock I heard in the morning at KFRC when I was going to school in the Bay Area. He was my favorite. When I graduated from High School I went straight to Elkins Institute and College simultaneously to get into their Radio programs. I was on the air at KTSA by February '73, just months after graduating High School. I made a career out of Radio for 24 years working in San Antonio, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Tulsa, etc before moving to on air TV. Thanks JIm for your inspiration and Dick for such a great channel. I love talking Radio.
RIP Mr Roberts
I remember the day that he died. I was listening to KOST and I used to listen to his reports.and remember waking up and hearing the DJ hosts on KOST were worried about him on the air because he had missed a traffic report that he usually gave at a particular time. Then there was a report about a plane crash near an airport. After they announced his passing, a lot of people called in to offer their condolensces and how much he and his reports meant to them. Thanks for this video about him!
I am now 92 and I used to listen to him every morning on my way to work. So entertaining and fun. He He made my day but not like Clint Eastwood.
That never happened. Parker never left the United States as he’d be stopped at customs and exiled back to Germany for questioning over war crime(s). Back then, Hawaii was still considered part of the Volution Islands-visas were needed.
KFI's strong signal can easily be heard 200 miles away during the day (that includes Hemet). After dark, KFI can be heard alot further
Funny how much Ron Jacobs looks like Col Parker. He could have played him in the Elvis movie....
That is neat.
My late Dad was a "Boss Jock" on the Big 55 KAFY about a year after Dick Lyons left. I remember listening to Jerry Clifton doing 7 til Midnight. Dennis King also was at the station using the name Jefferson Stone. I was just a kid but remember it well.
Sure do miss the Johnny Helms Show!
Your dad was at WABC - then went to (top 40) WMGM (1050) New York where he did the "Landslide" show - and I believe at WMGM he was on 7 to 11pm. Then - on to Los Angeles. He was also host of KTTV's version of "Wonderama" for a short time.
If you guys talk about Visine, i'll hug ya's!

Nice memories! Greetings from the Philippines. I have an hour's worth of KINK here from 1973 on CD.
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing this!
Bruce also worked at KGIL in the mid to late sixties as I recall
Mayor Sam... are you still here?
Really nice job Chuck. Bruce was a voice from my childhood.
I remember Bruce Wayne but I was too young to have listened to the radio for the traffic reports. In the late 60's to early 70's, my folks blasted KGIL and Dick Whittington every morning. Always interesting. Always funny. He was a big part of my lifelong love for AM radio.
Thanks for another great episode!
Grew up hearing him on my parents’ car radios. Got to meet him in Upland when he was Grand Marshall of a parade. Such a nice guy. And what a terrific broadcaster. I have airchecks from KFI and other radio and TV stations after the crash. A terrible day for his loved ones and all of Southern California. Rest In Peace.
he's one slimey lookin SOB.
I enjoyed this. Never heard this story
Maybe because it's not true ?
That was a waste of time. This wasn't a "confrontation". It was clickbait.
Clickbait-😭😂💜💜⚡️⚡️
Ron Jacobs had the most annoying voice.
And the point of this was? DJ’s aren’t the brightest folks on this planet.
Liberation that made the world worse than better. Look what is happening!
