Other ways to avoid being pickpocketed by these organized gangs that are in the major European cities is to get securable bags. Bags with locking zipper mechanisms. Bags with steel mesh in the nylon that can't be cut open with a knife. Bags with straps that have steel cables inbedded in them that can't be cut off your shoulder. Bags that have detachable, lockable straps that you can wrap around the table leg of the cafe table you are sitting at, so if someone tries to grab your bag and run they will take the whole table with them. PacSafe makes them. Check them out. Also, if you can, when in Rome, avoid the subway. This is the center of this kind of activity. Take a taxi, or an Uber.

Be careful of taxis to the airport in Rome. 2016 wife not well decided to take a cab to the airport. 3 cab drivers at the train terminal. Asked cab driver how much to the airport. 60 euro. No thanks 2 tickets first class to the airport 24 euro. 2nd cab driver "look is a on a the door 50 euro". I turned back and said "and what is he going to tell me? 40 euro" I looked at them and said "you can all sit here and make 0 euro" and walked away.

3 weeks ago we were at Rome train station to go to the port for our cruise. I bought the tickets online just didn’t know what track. As I opened my phone to see the tickets and look at the board a gentleman came up to us and said he could help us find the right track. He didn’t have the trentailia logo on his shirt so I immediately knew he didn’t work there. We told him we got this. 15 minutes later he came back to us and insisted on helping us. But we already found a ticket employee to help and we were just waiting. My husband got angry at him. He left. Now if I would have handed my phone to him to help us he would have ran off with my phone. Big scam.

italy is full full of crime. some of it is migrants, some is roma gypsy people, some are drug addicts or foreign fugitive gangs who run lots of tourist-target scams. its everywhere, in taxis that drive you endlessly and super-charge, in supermarkets that on purpose dont give the correct change, its a nightmare and your story unfortunately is super common.

Now I may be somewhat presumptuous but as a Canadian you seem like over apologetic friendly Canadians, maybe I'm completely wrong? However what I say to people as a season traveller myself and having lived in Medellin Colombia for 2 years , don't be so damn Canadian..lol.. When your "Spidey senses " are going off and there's police around don't be shy to yell at the person and tell him to just leave you alone and believe me they'll get away from you especially if there's a police presence around. I know pickpocketing is a huge huge thing in Spain and Italy . And I'm going to say it, especially with the gypsies , there are very , very organized gypsies living there and they are very, very skilled at what they do. Traveller beware..." When in Rome'...

Swarming by young girls happen in many cities in Europe, especially in subways. The group surrounds you, pushing themselves against your backpacks/bags while dipping their hands inside your pockets/bags/pouch. They quickly leave the subway coach before the door closes, pass their loot to male cohorts. Happened to us in Madrid, Nice, Rome, and Milan; however we were able to avoid any loss, except in one case when they got away with a bag of inexpensive items. When confronted. Raise your voice to alert cops who patrol popular sites.

Well done, Chris! Thanks for sharing. Look, I'm Italian, so I come from an advantageous position. Last year, I was on my own, enjoying a month of Italy's natural wonders. At Termini, as I was getting my ticket from the kiosk for the Leonardo express to fly home, it happened to coincide with the end of the Roma soccer game. 2 men who appeared to be good Samaritans to the rescue wanted to help me with my purchase. The instant I began speaking in a Roman dialect, they were gone. Once I returned in a position of peace, a tall Canadian gentleman said he was about to shove both potential thieves out of the way. He commended me on keeping my cool. But yes, even if you are on your guard, accidents can happen to anyone. Constant vigilance is paramount.

The takeaway is do not talk to anyone on public transportation in Rome.

A few years ago my wife and I went from Athen to Rome, We booked a limousine to take us to a small Hotel near the Vatican for 40 Euro . Was much more convenient then subway and Taxi from the train station. When you are in a strange city and you travel 2 or more persons its cheaper and safer then public transport. Christof in Toronto

I was with you until 4:51 when Jim said, "It's not unusual for a group of girls to tell me to follow them, so I follow them, that's why I follow them." And then he gets this weird grin on his face. He continues with this theme when he gets in the elevator with this group of girls. It does not make sense. It makes him sound and look like a creep. Why did they follow these girls? At 5:46 Jim says, "The girls pulled me into the elevator...What do you do, guys." She says, "They surrounded him, he loves it." Creepy and stupid behavior.

I live in Italy and I don't help out anybody in subway stations. Just this week I was coming back from work a lady comes to me and ask my help her buy tickets. I just said No. And kept moving.

I was walking in Rome with a friend while they explained the last time there, gypsies took a passport and tried to sell it back. Before the story is finished, suddenly we are engulfed by 12-15 small dirty children pushing cardboard at our torsos so they can pickpocket. Simultaneously a woman appears with the plastic baby (just getting ready to toss it in the air so we will reach to catch it and free our money/cards to them. I push my friend away and yelled “run” and instantly they all disappeared. They did not get anything but it all happened very fast and just the way you read about. Other incidents at Spanish Steps, Barcelona and London. I use a thin neck safe with shirt, sweater, jacket. Always get your back against a wall to regroup. It’s a full time business for these people-they are partners and clearly it’s quite profitable.

Thanks for heads up on this. Am planning to go to Rome in the next few months. Incidentally I was in Barcelona couple months back. Took train from airport to town and while we were looking at the metro map, a gentleman gestured me to the ticket machine. Then after buying the ticket, we went to the opposite platform which was a mistake. So we walked back, crossed the overhead bridge which wasted about 15 minutes. Same gentleman appeared again and pointed me to the right platform. I felt a bit odd as trains are leaving every 5 or10 minutes. Wife was alert as always suggested we move back, stand against the wall, look at the approaching train directions again, take our time, we are not in a rush. Wife later told me she saw the gentleman talking with a lady even before we bought our tickets and still there after we got back from wrong platform. Many trains had come and gone already. Perhaps we are overly suspicious type, then again no one will help us if we were robbed in anyway. Or maybe we are Asians and we can't speak Spanish, so in a way it is difficult to converse with us. Having said all these, Spain and Portugal are great places to visit. People and food are super.
