Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109 (Marc-Andre Hamelin)
Hamelin masterfully plays one of Beethoven's greatest sonatas, part of a set of not widely available recordings from a live show he did in Warsaw in 2006. The audio quality is quite good, especially after I did a decent amount of remastering.
I believe that Hamelin is a criminally underrated Beethoven interpreter. He has the superhuman clarity and precision to really bring the music to life. He also captures the neurotic energy, and haunting beauty, of late Beethoven works very well. However, he still knows where to give things a more sweet, romantic feeling. His unmatched virtuosity in the most difficult spots goes without saying.
Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Liszt: Ave Maria Practice, Big Arpeggios (Self Taught)
Просмотров 6252 года назад
I usually wouldn't upload something so rough, but I figured I'd show people that I started to learn the 2nd half the piece a few days ago. I'm still going to upload the first half alone by August, but I hope to have the whole piece done within a year. This part is much more difficult in some ways, especially getting the jumps in the left hand to sound smooth, although it's only been a few days....
Marc-Andre Hamelin: Toccata on "L’Homme armé" (Sheet Music)
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
This is my first attempt at a sheet music video. I decided to do this piece by Marc-Andre Hamelin because 1): The sheet music for it isn't available on RUclips, and it's a really cool original work 2): I wanted to try something challenging. While this is not Hamelin's most difficult piece, it is definitely one of his most musically mature and original. I really hope he continues to compose in t...
Liszt/Schubert Ave Maria Practice (Self Taught): Improving Bravura/Dynamics
Просмотров 3782 года назад
An improved version of me playing the climax of this piece. After working on this part for around a week I think I'm getting closer to at least getting the dynamics right. Really emphasizing the F octave in the right hand and the C octave in the left hand is difficult though since the C is over half the keyboard away from the note before, and the F is in an awkward position. Would love feedback!
Liszt/Schubert Ave Maria (Practice, Self Taught): The Climax

Finally here, hopefully over one of the last hurdles of this piece (since I'm only learning the first half). Really proud of the fact that I didn't use the "cheat" on this part that many people use, including virtuosi like Katsaris. The "cheat" is playing the d-e 32nd note octaves at the climax with the right hand only rather than dividing the top/bottom notes between the right and left hand an...

Liszt Ave Maria: Practice, 10ths section (self taught)
Просмотров 2382 года назад
I started practicing this absolute nightmare of a section 5 days ago. Here are the results... the melody is now in octaves, and the jumps are now in both hands. On top of this the right hand has 10ths. I'm playing the minor 10ths normally, but I'm rolling the d to f a little because even though I can reach it, it's hard to reach accurately at tempo. Although because my hands are bigger, I'm abl...
Liszt: Ave Maria (page 2 practice nightmare) (self taught)

I recently started page 2 of the Liszt Ave Maria transcription, this is a short clip from practicing. The second page becomes much more difficult in terms of voicing and rhythm since there are so many melody notes packed in between the accompaniment. Not sure if I'm playing it right or how much better I'll be able to get it. This part is especially difficult without a sostenuto pedal, so I'm wo...
Practicing Liszt/Schubert Ave Maria while Sick (Self Taught)
Просмотров 4082 года назад
Got sick a few days ago, decided to see how well I could play with a fever. Definitely far from perfect, but an interesting experiment. My main goal was getting the left hand octaves soft (I think some were too soft even though I hit them), and also finally learning to play that one LH note (F in the LH at :38 is extremely hard to voice) that Lisitsa and others leave out. Sorry for bad audio qu...

Hamelin is adding a layer under this style brillant piece, enriching its soul, leaving us with things to reflect over. Truly in line with Liszt's spirit, who while playing mostly operas arias arrangements and style brillant pieces in concert, composed "in secret" thoughtful and masterful pieces, also from the point of view of the form. I have been for a long time thinking that in Liszt (like in Paganini or Wienawski) there was nothing behind the virtuosity, and I have completely changed my mind; and Hamelin played, like he does again here, a good part in this.

Even for Hamelin, the sonata is clearly a struggle. The only pianist I ever heard who cleared all the hurdles accurately and yet maintained the huge dynamic range Beethoven required was Earl Wild. And I believe he was close to 80 at the time. He recorded it too. Where (at Harvard) did this recital take place? It sounds like a padded cell: absolutely no reverberation, unnatural.

@@JG_1998 Chopin is not easy for Hamelin, he struggles in Ballads, in the 2nd sonata, tons of mistakes. Godowsky version is MUCH easier to play than originals, as Godowsky was a traditional pianist so he knows how to write, the tons of notes decorating around are very comfortable, while Chopin had such unique technique and tortuous style that his works remain among the most difficult and risky to perform, as there are no technical exercises to prepare you to them, so the pianist has to invent new exercises, which will be of no use later.

Godowsky's versions are much harder than Chopin's and that is very true, but the annoying thing with Chopin etudes is that they are so well known in standard repertoire and Chopin's writing of the etudes is so simplistic that any mistake would be so easily exposed. When you combine those two things together, you can see how Chopin's etudes are harder to perform. Plus in the Godowsky versions, you can hide mistakes easier because of the way they are written compared to Chopin's. But still, it doesn't take away the fact that the Godowsky etudes are among the pinnacles of piano technique.
