Is The Fuji GW690 Medium Format Rangefinder Just a Texas-sized Leica M3?
The legendary Fuji GW690 has been described as a "The Texas Leica", but I think it is more akin to a Texas Yashica.

      It does not have a battery- the meter has a sensor that doesn’t need one. Selenium, if I remember correctly. Which means there’s a pretty good chance that the meter is probably off and you might want to use an external meter to set the exposures.

    Actually, while they’re about the same size, it actually uses 357 silver oxide batteries which have an ever so slightly higher voltage. You can use LR-44 but the light meter might not work as well as it could and/or your batteries might not last as long as the silver oxide will.

    3:05 something I did because my solenoid meter WAS working, but it wasn't accurate. What I did was use a light meter (or digital camera etc) and find what the exposure should be. So let's say I'm pointing at a tree and I'm using 400 speed film in the Minox (which has a fixed aperture of 3.5). Let's say my digital camera reads that tree for 500th of a second at f/3.5, 400 iso. I now don't worry about setting the Minox to 400 ASA but only to make sure that when I aim it at the tree, the needle on the minox is reading 1/500th of a second. Neat little trick. (I haven't developed a roll yet since I did that trick LOL... so take it with a grain of salt. Can't see why it wouldn't work though. Unless the solenoid fails in an exponential way, where maybe super intense light or super low light will still be out of wack?? who knows. I think it's better than just setting it to the ASA though, unless you know your solenoid meter is working accurately).

    Yeah, got myself a PhotoPlug and the app just to take some measurings, the disappointing part is that their app leads to belive it will measure up to 1/4000, but not really. Frankly they should give a good update on the app, or at least make it open source for those who'd like to contribute to such project. Say if you got an old camera and want to find out the ballpark to where the shutter speed is after all the years, it's a rare option. Lastly, instead of having to attach a light sensor, it would've been nice it the app could use the phone's camera instead or as an option.

    I tried that app. and I couldn't get on with it, so I decided to put a film in a camera that I knew worked and fired off a shot of a Kodak grey card and grey scale. Removed the film and loaded into the camera that I wanted to test, wound the film past the previous shot then fired of test shots of same grey card and grey scale at all shutter speeds with corresponding apertures. The comparison of grey scale patches to the first shot will indicate any degree of error in 1/3 stops - after development of the film. Under my enlarger I used an enlarging meter with 1/100 stop sensitivity to measure densities. I'm thinking of using my Canon 5Diis' sensor to do similar for my Hasselblad lenses using lightroom to compare densities.

    The D represents the best of the knob wind Yashicas. The more "advanced" series is the crank wind. I have both, but prefer the D because its is lighter and has an accessory shoe on the left side, which lets me place a small light meter in it (or a flash gun, though I seldom use flash). The crank series does not have this shoe, but instead has built-in meter, which aren't very good. It's dead only Yashica Mat LM. My F has an f2.8 viewing lens, which gives a brighter view than my LM, which is f3.2. The D also has double exposure capability, which the crank series does not. Be careful!

    I haven't used my Yashica D for a few years. I'd like to shoot with it again. I had a vague recollection that you had to keep that button pushed in every time you winded on the film which I found to be a drag. It required a fair amount of pressure and if it was mounted to a tripod, it could potentially shift the camera's position slightly. Other than that, it's a fun camera to use. I brought it out of storage recently and noticed the shutter is sticking with some of the slow shutter speeds. B is fine though. I'll shoot some long exposures of the local creek and small waterfall as we've had so much rain here. It's been an incredibly wet winter. I'll load some Fuji Velvia 50 film and wait for an overcast day and whip out my 3 stop ND filter.

    • @joeheptn
      @joeheptn 2 года назад

      So far, I’m really digging the colors. With the Sony I never really felt that I got an image that was what I was envisioning when I pressed the shutter button and that hasn’t been the case with the SL. One of the lenses I traded in for the Leica was the E mount version of the Sigma lens that I paired with the Leica so I feel I can make a pretty good comparison. I always use the EVF when shooting and sometimes I have found that it appears that focus is hard to find and I wonder if the image I took is in focus, but it always is in focus. That could mean that I need to get the diopter dialed in better. Thanks for watching and good luck with the search.

    I just picked up the 20 mm and the 50 mm module I'm deciding about what to do with them any experience

      I haven't used the modules, but I would bet they would both be great for street photography. The 20mm would give a wider field of view making for photos with more context than the 50. And I bet the 50 would be great for inside candid shots. Good luck and happy shooting.

      @@joeheptn thank you stay safe the 50 m m also has macro abilities. I'm on the hunt for a minolta adapter too for the m module
