first "fat" VERSION of Playstation Portable The first "revision" is the 2000 Sorry, had to point that out. Sorry.
Avoid the second sleeve case with white palma, I have it, and the internal black part left black spot that cannot be removed on the device itself
Very good comparison, I have the white and I can confirm all of your points
Thank you so much. I was waiting for the cover review!
Black is best
Thank you for making such a detailed video. I appreciate your explanations and suggestions.
Very awesome to see someone who'll enjoy the PSP.
Is it possible to replace it with a mmc card, because it's not possible to find a replacement hdd.
Indeed size-wise this hdd and mmc are almost identical, yet there is not any known way to replace hdd with mmc as the interfaces are entirely different. I remember finding some posts from a guy who tried to connect this tiny hdd to standard pc interface and had decent progress, yet unfortunately without final result.
@@mmrlckt I am trying to find the exact same pin to pin match mmc to replace hdd. There are only 1 or 2 GB maximum capacity cards that were manufactured in the past with these same pins.
@@mujtabakhan1117 That's quite interesting actually, because previously I was only looking at standard MMCs. Indeed MMCplus and MMCmobile have pins similar to this HDD, so potentially one may try to swap hdd for such mmc (max size I assume is 2gb). If I did not have working hdd I would definitely try to do so (and maybe I still would out of curiosity later :)
@@mmrlckt hmmm isnt the microdrive use CF interface as in the ipods of the era ? People are doing multi gig hdd to microsd swaps with CF to SD adapters with old ipods.
@@leventebandi Unfortunately unlike toshiba hdds from ipods (that are easily swappable for CF-sd adapters) these tiny hdds are not easily compatible with CF (hdd itself is of the size of mmc card)
had one in 2009, amazing phone. used it for internet, music, photos, games, reading... good old days. had black edition version.
I bought the 60gb version back on the day i still have it now, i even 2ent out and bought 30gb one for parts and i still have not gotten round to sorting them out, i remember watching a video of a guy updating them old ipods to memery cards i think he was running like x4 1tb cards in there and i would love to mod my Zen to have 4tbs of music and vidz, right now i am using an old xiaomi phone as a music player.but with them old school devices there is less less clutter and junk and no touch screen which gets on my nerves when drivin as i always seem to touch the wrong icon while driving. Also out here in the uk you can get fined for using your mobile device if its not in a cradle/,phone holder ..... I need to upgrade so 8 can play all my old school cds and my music.... Three thumbs up for your video tape.... I always seem to come back to old school videos...
Dude I am loving your videos. 2000s tech has such a special place in my heart. Thanks for making these 👍
Just bought an adapter and it came today! Now to wait for the memory card! - any clues where I can get the middle touch bar? It needs replacing, doesn't swoosh anymore
Update, the ZEN seems to crash out when transferring media either through windows media player or drag and drop. Did you experience this? Even reflashed the firmware. Next step is, I have ordered a card reader and going to manually put the music on then reinstall the card and hope
I would say finding a donor (even damaged/non-working) might be a good idea
Hello
Neat. I have the same mod. Running a 120GB SD card. I get the occasional hang-up but I live with it. Did you ever check if you can go higher than that? I fear the firmware can't handle much larger capaciities than intended back then. Been using this thing daily since 2007. I love it to death. Unfortunately none of the 3rd party replacement batteries have worked for me so far.
Nice! I had a plan to try bigger card but was fine with the capacity at that moment, so have not tried it yet. Might indeed be tricky with the batteries.
You deserve more interactions. Subbed
Nicely done man. still have mine next to bed in a drawer. 2003? was amazed when i could get rid of 300 cd case and have it in palm.. had a radio broadcaster hooked up to it so it would play at work over speakers. it killed ipods.. had episodes of Seinfeld on it. my girl and i would watch episodes in bed on that tiny screen.
Oh yep man, great device and fantastic memories!
Really appreciate this video. Thank you!
Great thanks. So I will try this battery. Is it known why the player dont like some batteries?
Probably incompatible battery control boards
Уже не читалка, еще не смартфон :) спасибо за обзор! Убеждаюсь, что Кант-2 это то, что нужно и его достаточно
Onyx Boox Kant-2 is a good option indeed (in fact it is under-powered version of Palma), though I believe it is not sold in EU or USA.
I love this player. But my problem is, that it never starts again, when I changed the battery. I ordered it from several companies. Always the type CS-CRTo5SL. What could be my problem ? From a Creative blog I got the info, that I should install a younger software. The actual software wouldn´t allow a change of the accu. Could thsi be ? Or which company has an accu that works ?
Hi, I used Cameron Sino Battery for Creative Zen Vision M 30GB / 60GB 1400mAh - BA20603R79914 LPCS285385 (e.g. from Aliexpress). Some aftermarket batteries (both 1400 and 1700 mAh) might work only on low firmwares or require utilization of control board from old battery (soldering needed). The battery I used was just plug-and-play with no modifications needed.
I think I know what’s going on. The screen on your white unit is slightly misaligned. The screen is position is slightly lower than the one on your black unit. After watching many videos of other white Palma’s I noticed those screens are not misaligned compared to your unit. This defect is probably present on a complete production run of white Palma’s. I just ordered a white one one so I’ll post a follow up once I receive it. 4:05
It might be combination of factors. So far all the white units I saw had exactly same issue, plus better alignment of screen will not fix backlight bleeding (which is caused by more transparent bezel). In my opinion more transparent bezel contributes the most to the visibility of black line.
@@mmrlckt Yes I agree about the bezel bleed on the white. I’ll let you know if my unit has the line / alignment issue. Thanks for making us aware of this 🙏
@@Rez-N-8 hi, could you please tell me if indeed your boox palm has the same defects as described in the video. Thank you. i am interested in buying one and this video has made me rethink it. Thanks
@@CapitanInvisible I can just mention that black line on the white Palma is visible even in official Boox video ruclips.net/video/M7ClcwxO9CI/видео.htmlsi=DZkglyaQozugcuUh&t=26 (just pause it on the 26th second)
Have you received it?
Excellent comparison. Thanks!
Wow, I was thinking of getting the white, but now I think I will choose black instead. Thank you for showing the difference!
it didn't work for me, I guess the scratch is just to deep. It still distorts the color :/
Yep, maybe that's the case. But hopefully it is still a lot less visible than before
@@mmrlckt yes it is definitely less visible
Finally my Vision M is fixed. I had the case replaced, battery replaced, 120gb SD card mod, Mic doesn't' work for some reason but it something i never used and i never will. Thank you for the tutorial.
Tell me more! I have a old zen M that needs some love. Really wanna get it working again.
@@sittingmadmanBy now, the battery is probably dead. When you will open your Zen Vision M be very careful with the battery connector on the motherboard. NOTE There is a design flaw!!! (LOOKING AT THE FACE OF THE PLAYER) the bottom RIGHT SCREW MUST BE SHORTER than other case screws. If you put a longer screw all the way it will push that battery connector on the inside and damage your Vision M. For that reason my player has no bottom RIGHT SCREW (when looking at the front of the player) Dont run you player without battery (for extended amount of time) as i damaged one of my players like that. If you need replacement battery get Cameron Sino 1400mAh battery (with the tool kit) for Zen Vision M from Amazon. For the SD Card Modification I used " CY CF Memory Card Adapter SSD HDD Adapter 1.8" Compact Flash CF Memory Card to CE ZIF SSD HDD Adapter" from amazon and "chenyang SD SDHC SDXC to CF Compact Flash Memory Card Adapter Reader Type I 16/32/64/128GB CF to SD Card Converter" and SanDisk 128GB Ultra SDXC UHS-I Memory Card - Up to 140MB/s, C10, U1, Full HD, SD Card - SDSDUNB-128G-GN6IN It was easy to install following the video tutorial You will need to reload the Zen Firmware from the computer for the Zen to work with the SD Card.
@@sittingmadmanIt seems like your ZEN's battery is not functioning properly. I recommend using a Cameron Sino 1400mAh Battery for Creative, which comes with the necessary tools. When you open your ZEN, please handle the battery connection on the main board with care. Additionally, when reassembling your ZEN, make sure to use a shorter screw by the battery connector. Using the longer case screw and screwing it all the way can cause damage to the battery connector on the inside (specifically, the right bottom screw when looking at the front of the ZEN).
@@UNLISTEDWEBthanks! I orderd some battery, sadly not the same brand that yoy mentioned. But gonna try it first and if that dont work I will order the one you recommended..i also need to get the sd card adapter:)
You just saved me €300 thank you. This would have bugged me to no end.
did you buy the black?
@ismaels3471 I have bought neither so far. The white recently became available on uk amazon but not black. I don't want to buy from boox as people report their customer service has been really bad when seeking returns.
I had one when it first came out in 2005, I really really want to get another one in 2024
Thanks for the video! Now it makes me happier with my black version (I returned the white one). I have to admit I love the white version as well since it makes it unique. The black is too ordinary, especially it looks very similar to the Hisense Hi reader. But for me, the screen is the most important. I never noticed the black line at the top for the white until now that you mentioned it. There's a black line on the black as well but it's very close to the bezel and one really needs to tilt it to see it. I did notice the backlit line around the edge of the white one. This doesn't happen on my black one. I think maybe light reflects on white surface more? Another thing I want to point out is there's a very thin gap between the white frame & the gray bezel (especially at the 4 corners). It's much noticeable on the white one apparently. Another thing is the black speaker hole & censor hole are clearly showed on the white while on the black, they're hidden. Those might be a distraction. Also I dont' like how light can bleed through the gray bezel.
Thanks, totally agree with your comments. Indeed considering all the differences I find black Palma more balances overall. Otherwise I would definitely choose white one, which is still very very good - those who got it will not be disappointed. Also using white protective case or folding-flip case makes black Palma almost entirely white, so it is nice option as well.)
I just received my white Palma today and I almost commented that mine doesn't do any of that. But, you're right, it does. I never saw the top line because I immediately set the refresh to HD. I also didn't see any bright outline while I was setting it up or reading. I've had the Palma on practically all day, evening and night in multiple and changing lighting situations, and I only saw the outline when I turned the brightness setting to 100% in a moderately lit room. I think most people won't see the bright outline in typical use scenarios. But now that I've seen it, a little bit of my joy bubble just deflated. I'm still glad that I got the white one instead of the black. I love the gentle color transition from screen to case and the absence of a black bezel. It helps the device disappear into the written page.
White Palma was my first choice and I absolutely loved it - it is elegant and has indeed more natural "paper" look. Also there are not so many devices with white bezels nowadays, which makes it rather unique. Bright outline did not bother me much and at the beginning I considered this black line as a feature (though it was visible in most of my usage scenarios). Just out of curiosity I got the black Palma for comparison and honestly I did not expect any difference. I was also afraid that the black frame would make my eyes more tired during long reading sessions, but so far I don't feel any difference in this respect. As a summary - I tend to return white one, but they are both fantastic devices.
Are you still available to see the bright outline if you change the screen settings to dark?
Thanks for this

Super happy to see someone doing mods on this particular unit. This was my go-to alternative to an ipod back in the day. This thing had unrivaled video codec support at the time, i used to be able to download all types of movies and watch them during class way back when. Drag and drop file structure for music too. Couldn't be beat. Still have mine in it's box with all the manuals and accessories and the old case i had for it as well. i took such good care of that thing.

Only wish that's it's possible to switch the hdd with an sd card, anything else that's the best music phone, ever.
Indeed - considering that original MMC/SD is exactly same size as hdd (though a bit thinner of course), would be perfect switch. I was immediately looking for this swap possibility, but unfortunately nokia developed it's proprietary hdd connection and there are no adapters/schematics available.
I was using 8gb black variant and it was damn good music player, this 4gb variant really sucks as HDD will get crashed often
Interesting!
“A huge success” You are a true Sony believer.
What an interesting phone, never thought I'd see a phone with an actual HDD inside it
Same I was also never seen
Yep indeed, only few models with embedded hdds were ever produced (this one from Nokia and couple models from Samsung). Decreasing prices of flash memory together with its much greater reliability made it unfeasible to continue development of new hdd-phones.)
Awee the first phone that my sis bought me , I remember we used to swap cases for it and put those led lights on the back that would light up when we got calls or texts and it had sort of a wallpaper. <3 this
