- Finally, I managed to get the gorgeous pocket Sony Vaio P series I dreamed about back in 2009!)
00:00 - unboxing and overview
11:06 - disassembly
21:40 - SSD upgrade
Found one in mint condition, boxed with all accessories, specs: Intel Atom Z540 1,86GHz, 8” (1600*768 - higher than all laptops back then), Intel Media Accelerator 500, 2GB RAM, 80GB mechanical HDD (1,8” ZIF), Windows 7 Home Premium (updated to Win10 by the previous owner).
Swapping ZIF HDD with 256gb SSD using mSATA mini PCI Express SSD card to a ZIF 40 port adapter. Behind the scenes, hdd was cloned to SSD (including recovery partition) using mSATA to USB adapter.
Pay attention to the fact that such Chinese mSATA to ZIF adapters can differ even if they look alike. As far as I am aware:
• some adapters may have ZIF contacts located on the opposite side of the connector (so that the cable should be inserted other way round),
• some may have too thick ZIF connector (so that some nonconductive tape should be applied to the backside of the cable to ensure the proper fit),
• some might have both of these features.
In my case, everything worked well first try, yet it is recommended to boot up the system and ensure that SSD is detected before putting all the screws back.
Some of the features were not working properly with Win10 (i.e. TrackPoint buttons), so using the recovery partition I restored Win7.
With SSD it runs quite well for a decade-old underpowered prestige-segment gadget. Anyway, nowadays this is mainly a vintage toy of esthetic value rather than any useful device…
I could still remember when I was young I saw this laptop’s commercial on a magazine. A man holding it and put it in the pocket of his jeans. After all these years, still want to handle one of these cool products in my hand.
This video helped me so much disassembling my Sony Vaio. The downward slide you have to do to remove the keyboard drived me nuts!
Probably because there is another video on youtube, disassembling this subnotebook while using a spudger.
DO NOT try to do that. I broke of some plastic clips of the casing and even after that it wouldn't budge.
If Sony released this thing today with an AMD APU 😮💨
i want this one beautiful sony mini laptop years ago before i went to the mac's world
Great DIY video. Adding some voice message would be fantastic ☺️
I love these little keyboard with screen mini laptops, I've got a NEC 790 pro, and of course my ASUS eee PC 901, though it's not a wide format, the keyboard was easy to use, I used to use it for writing and am now wanting to put ARCH on it so I can do coding on it. Might end up building a mechanical keyboard with one of those ultra wide format mini screens. Probably have to make it a cyberdeck for prototyping and then clamshell it. I kind of want to weld together an aluminum case for my 901 to make it even tougher if that's possible.
that would be wonderful. any updates on building one?
Good vídeo bro🇧🇷❤️!
Same boat as you, am waiting for my P that I really, really wanted back in the day to arrive! Got mine for 90. Arriving some time next week =)
Where from at such a good price?
Tengo unas de estas pc intacta me encanta su diseño pero a la fecha ya no es funcional a menos que sea con el ssd
it would be cool to see this again with modern specs like 3 ghz cpu, 16 gb ram & replacable m.2 storage.. while using for usb c port for data and power..
Yep, that's indeed what many people are wishing for
@@mmrlckt heard of the Toshiba nb 520 ? A netbook with USB charging function and speaker function via 3.5 mm headjack when it's not on..
@@drifter4training Checked that one - indeed nice ideas implemented for that date. Only had one Toshiba laptop - that was gorgeous 17,3 gaming Qosmio with 3d glasses etc. Back in 2012 that costed me a fortune. Had an impression that 3d would be the tech of future...apparently not. Eh, good memories.)
@@mmrlckt indeed, there's also the Acer iconia 6120 and dell XPS m2010..
Installed W10 with only 1-2 gigs of RAM?
Could you advise on the model # of SSD you used? I know some SSD's don't play well with this P series Vaio in addition to what you said. I found a few for a great price(and in my favorite color). I'm looking at doing this upgrade as well. I want to run music programs and hook up my NetMD recorder to it. Thanks!
Hi! Geat plan. If I'm not mistaken last time I used Transcend TS256GMSA230S
did the same but windows 7 locks up when copying the files to the ssd on the instalation...
I remember I had similar issues - If Im not mistaken the solution for me back in a days was to clone Win7 partition entirely from HDD to SSD (e.g. via AOMEI) so that there is no need to make clean install on SSD (neither from recovery partition, nor from external image). For that you will need mSATA to USD adapter.
Got my P, stuck SSD in it. Now what to do about the OS and drivers...
For me solution was to clone hdd to ssd first.)
Can the Vaio P's Ram go past 2GB?
As far as I am aware - nope.(
Hi tou have a tv digital driver for this vaio?
Hi, nope but you can check on enthusiasts forums (reddit, 4pda) - I've seen driver packs there
Pena que o carregador, não é o original, pois este vem em 2 partes, uma delas, tem a conecção de rede e VGA
True, I was also disappointed
does that mini laptop have a fan? because I bought one (second hand) and it gets very hot
Nope, it has completely passive cooling
What is the SSD size and the adopter plz ?
SSD - mSATA 256gb (like Transcend 230s)
Adapter - mSATA mini PCI Express SSD card to a ZIF 40 port (no-name)
Hello dear friend!
Do you could provide the drivers for this computer? Make a mega link or other. Thanks! :)
When I was making this vid I found drivers like this - google "4pda sony vaio p" and then use google translate on this forum to find the links
Any chance I can DM you to ask your opinion on my Sony Vaio P that won't spin up at all?
Hi there, at the moment I dont have access to my vaio p - I would suggest to check respective forums
@@mmrlckt any forum suggestions? Thanks for your help 👍
@@KH-yu4do Sure, I would try to search it on reddit first
what kind of SSD does it use for upgrade, does not seem like classic 2.5 inch?
More details are in description
@@mmrlckt I need ZIF 40 port adapter?
@@paparazzo80 you need mSATA mini PCI Express SSD card to a ZIF 40 port adapter
@@mmrlcktthanks, that is rare to find...impossible here in Bosnia.
Performance is 10-30-50% better?
I did not benchmark it prior to upgrade - so my subjective opinion is that overall boost should be around 30% (with a lot less hesitation). Also processor+ram is the real bottleneck there.
@@mmrlckt ok, thanks
@@mmrlckt can that be upgraded too? This reminds me of modern Gpd however Sony's design is much more elegant.
@@heinsdasein1523 Unfortunately there is practically no room for simple upgrade apart from ssd
It was 899 usd

Great Video but still wouldn’t call it retro.
