The Amateur Runner
Великобритания
Добавлен 21 янв 2024
My Running Vlogs... I found my love for running through lockdown and since then I have become a keen runner, continued to progress and achieve a lot. Most notably to date in 2023.
However, 2024 sees me embark on a new challenge to run my first marathon distance!
So, with ‘amateur’ being the key word I thought why not vlog my journey and hopefully engage with like minded people to share experiences, advice and even inspire!!

Well done on the Lightning Bolt PB! You're showing up in my notifications again. Good to meet you a couple of weeks back at the Melksham park run, it was a good chat. I got a PB taht week and over did it a bit so I'm waiting for an aggravated IT Band to heal up a bit. I'm using it as an opportunity to concentrate on some strength and conditioning ( that doesn't involve knee and ankles. Hope to be running again soon, see you out there and good luck in Calne next week!

I ran that day and one of my fellow park runners walked past you at the start. I wasn't too far behind, aiming for a sub 21. I finished 20.16. I should have tried for a sub 20 finishing the 5th in 3 minutes 45 🤦♂️
@@JasonWasey next time!! 👊🏻 Impressive 5th k too btw. I can usually find it in me for a sprint finish but I got caught out having the finish somewhere else in my head. Generally though over a 5k I’m always quicker at the start and try to hold on.

I'd love to hear more about your training. I'm around 21:30 and I've been chasing sub-20 for ages. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I hope Cardiff went well for you!
@@thesouthendrunner thank you and thanks for watching! Cardiff went very well! …video to come soon 😁 I think a good mixture of runs in your training is key. Easy runs, long runs, speed sessions. I incorporated some hard speed sessions into my Cardiff half training to try and help me with both. A mixture of 400 and 800 intervals at sub 5 and 10k pace with minimal rest in between. On these sessions I was clocking 14-15k and I think these sessions definitely helped. The course was also a big factor for me.

@@SwimBikeRunStu thank you Stu! Unlike any other Parkrun I’ve done. Watching everyone make their way over to the start line was amazing. My wife was even more surprised when the stampede headed straight towards her 😂
Yeah this is my local park run. it's a flat course and great venue. It attracts alot of people, but do consider that first KM working your way through the crowd and obstacles, unless you are at the front, it's actually much harder to chase a PB here than the other Parkrun's nearby. We are blessed to have such a big turnout each week, but really vital to consider the above if coming down for a PB attempt.
@@shaneroymitchell you make a very good point. You could lose a fair bit of time if you found yourself caught up in the crowd. It was such a great Parkrun and I will definitely be revisiting at some point in the future.
Well done 👏 Now to do it consistently 😅 the drive won't have done you any favours either. Looks like a lovely Parkrun but a bit far from South Yorkshire lol. Good Luck at Cardiff HM 🍀
@@vickyshaw1709 thank you!! 😁 I’m told that once you dip under 20 you will continue to do so but we will see if I can do it consistently 😂

@@SimonBanfield congrats! massive achievement! I’m sure I will feel the same, from not being able to run a lap of the park to running a sub 20 5k will be huge! Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Nice day and a nice route
@@nicksrunningandadventureschann going to try and do these trail runs as often as I can now. They make good training runs too with them being hilly
A good run , just an observation and not a criticism so please don’t take it the wrong way , I’ve noticed on a lot of your vlogs that you start of saying why you probably won’t get your sub on a course , so in a way you almost set yourself mentally to not achieve your goal . Be positive and dig in I reckon you’ve got the ability to it , just leave the doubt at home and hang on for dear life, good luck 🤞 you will smash it , you still need to do faster runs too bud
@@nicksrunningandadventureschann not at all, I think you are completely right. I had noticed this watching the footage back myself and have already said to myself that needs to be different at the next one. You are also right about it being a mental thing. I need to find away of switching off when it starts getting really uncomfortable and just dig in and go for it. Thank you! And thanks for watching!
@@CarlTheAmateurRunner I had to hang on for dear life when I broke sub 20 and 19 it was hard , but I believe you’ve got what it takes to do it ,good luck bud and thanks for taking it the wrong way
@@nicksrunningandadventureschann Sounds like you run a quick 5k, what’s your Pb?
If the hill wasn't there you'd probably have got it
@@francolive5718 Hi, thanks for watching! Yeah, quite possibly. It’s going to be hard to find a pancake flat park run without travelling too far so maybe I’m just gonna have to practice hills!
Nice one mate my pb still remains over there 22:30, really nice local parkrun 🙂
@@Matt.Doughty thanks mate! it was a nice parkrun to do. Very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be returning here at some point.
Right, we're going to have to find somewhere where I can pace you round to sub-20min. Let me know what you have lined up and I'll see when I can get over to you and help out.
@@garymacalister That would be great!! Very kind of you to offer Gary. Although I still have a good chunk to find I think someone pacing me is exactly what I need.
You two need to do Poole . . . It is fast and wide for the first 0.7km. Third fastest Parkrun in the UK (2023)
@@PaulBeverley funny you should mention Poole. I’m eyeing it up for this weekend!
@@CarlTheAmateurRunner It's worth it. Nick Bester did it same weekend I ran it ruclips.net/video/QW2-g3tuTzk/видео.html&t= and he got 15m 16s time and didnt even get first place. We stayed at "Poole Park House" which is 100m from the start and you get a parking spot in the drive. Anyway, give it a go, make sure you get a good starting position, do a video and I bet you go back next year . . . I paced my wife to a 26m 49s time and we didnt even come i the top 400 (but she went 49 seconds quicker than any other Parkrun)
@@PaulBeverley just watched the video, looks great. Want to do it even more now ha. If not the next park run I will definitely be giving this one ago at some point. Early start of if I do, 55mile away.

Not sure why I only just saw this video pop up, I was there somewhere it was a lovely day. Glad you didn't get me on there, the last thing the world needs to see is me running! Great job pacing though, it can't be easy getting just right, especially at the start.
@@andyveale I’ve done a few videos since, hit that bell notification to make sure you don’t miss any! I’m really enjoying pacing, I’ve paced a couple of races now too. Something I’m gonna do a lot more of in the future.
I've watched a couple of your vids mate and you're so close. Please be patient and do your easy runs easy. That sub 20 will come and before you know it you'll be chasing 18. I know it sounds mad but do your intervals hard, easy runs easy and that sub 20 will be a breeze. Best of luck dude
@@Randybeast thank you! And thanks for watching! So many have said that once you break 20 you’ll be running sub all the time. Mad to think a 30min 5k was an achievement for me not so long ago! I’m looking forward to returning to some more sub 20 attempts. Currently trying to get myself into shape for Cardiff half and hoping the varied runs I’m doing for that will also help with my attempts. Because of my injury 5k 2-3 times a week was all I could manage for a while and I think I just got carried away with going out at race pace trying to reach my goal, in the end I just burnt out.
@CarlTheAmateurRunner you're not the first person to go full out on each run and you won't be the last. I've only been running 6 years but the last year has been the best. Structured training with an experienced coach makes a huge difference. 19.50 to 18.49 difference
Great vid Carl 🙂 I'm going to do this one, did the Stourhead one a while ago that was also a great route 🙂

@@SwimBikeRunStu this one was great and a completely free event too! There are a couple more localish I plan on doing too.
We all have days like that mate and give yourself chance to put a little training block in to try different types of running etc. take the pressure off from racing and times, then go for it on a race or day that you can do. Maybe a 4 week block? You'll get there absolutely zero doubt.
@@Run_Like_a_T-Rex I’ve been running a lot of easy runs lately like you say ‘without the pressure of racing’ and I’ve been enjoying it. I’ve even been pacing and helping others to Pb’s instead and it’s been a nice distraction. I’m hoping that when I return to the sub 20 challenge throughout my Cardiff training block, I can find a bit more time again.
The long easy runs for half marathon will help with your aerobic endurance then throw one or two speed sessions in working just below and above your target pace should see improvements in times. I took a while to hit that sub 20 and get stuck at certain points but have consistently been running 19:xx parkruns for last few months. Dont neglect the strength and conditioning as well. Good luck for the half marathon 🙂
@@vickyshaw1709 thank you! 😁 yeah that’s what I’m hoping that the half marathon training will help my sub 20 attempts. I have been guilty of neglecting my s&c but since my recent injury I’ve started to prioritise a day a week for that. Not only for injury prevention but it can actually produce extra speed too I’m told?
@@CarlTheAmateurRunner yes I think that's what's helped me. I've been doing some basic core exercises and weights at home with some mobility work. Contemplating joining a gym which also has a running track so I get my money's worth !!
@@vickyshaw1709 that sounds perfect! I have thought about track sessions once a week for intervals/speed workouts but it’s hard to find any availability.
Sorry to hear about that, looked like a warm night and there are always too many factors when racing a 5k as if one little thing goes wrong, most of the time that's it for your time, youll get there mate, its mainly mental and once you have clocked under once youll be doing it every week 👊👊
@@raleyadventures I think it was a mix of work, heat, and race pace fatigue and it just wasn’t gonna happen on that night. That race is a series so I may try and get back there and redeem myself!
