2019 Gibson R9 Cleanup and VOS Removal
Since it worked so well on the R8, I decided to do the R9, as well. The fretboard was in DESPERATE need of being conditioned, and looks much better after the fact. The body came out pretty good and looks better than it did when I opened the case, which is surprising, since it already looked pretty impressive.
All in all, still loving this one and think it's going to be a keeper.
Enjoy!

2022 Gibson Les Paul R8 Cleanup and VOS Removal
Просмотров 50214 дней назад
I've been wanting to remove the VOS from the R8 for a while now. I've suspected that the top is significantly more vibrant than the VOS treatment lets on, and I'm finally ready to get it cleaned and polished up. Little did I know there was going to be a couple of surprises along the way. Check out the video and see what you think. Enjoy!
Unboxing 2019 Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue: DS0038 Has a Home
Просмотров 63714 дней назад
This one has been in the works for a while. Over 8 months ago, the Gibson Demo Shop listed a 1959 Les Paul Reissue for $6099, and I immediately fell in love with it. But that price was a little high, even for open market pricing on the 60th anniversary reissues. So I kept an eye on it, always keeping it at the top of my Reverb watch list because it has a "DS" serial number. And, on that topic, ...

But the guitars that were mine, not my father's, when I started off were all Fenders. And it's incredibly easy to play. They talk about the fact that the rosewood necks are all just a little bit different and that they cannot guarantee a particular shape because of that. So I feel like I've hit the neck lottery in getting one that is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to play all the way up the neck. Since I've gotten this guitar, it's spent almost no time in its case. I keep it out where I can pick it up and play it any time I want without having to open the case.

    The first thing i would do after you polish it is buy a cream Pickguard, cream Historic rings, cream poker chip and Gold 50's top hat knobs. Then that would be a really sweet looking R8. Gibson does some crazy stuff with the Mod collection. This R8 is a good example of just how off spec they are willing to go. 1958-60 Les pauls never had black plastics. I would not have even known this was a R8 just by looking at it. The age of the pu's is a strange one too! why did they put on one pu from 2012 and another from 2020? It is like the tech just grabbed whatever was in the parts drawer!🤣

      I really do think there was something about the wood in the late '90s Taylor guitars that made them sing in a way that the modern ones do not. And the fact that there are some Gibson models that are from the same era and they call them "good wood" era guitars kinda adds to the fact that maybe that was the last of the really amazing wood guitars for regular production models. I've got a '92 Telecaster that has a unique sound to it, too, and now I'm starting to wonder if they all got the wood at the same time and Fender just used it up faster than the other manufacturers did because of how fast they pump out guitars.

    Nice collection. I have a bit of a collection myself. Nothing too fancy but yeah. One thing I never got. With that push pull nonsense… what is the difference between that and the Greeny thing? Any number of LPs have that reverse thing right? What’s the difference between that and the “ Greeny” deal?

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948 8 дней назад

      So, the Greeny pickup set and sound is specific to the winding and position of the pole pieces in Greeny. The out of phase does a good job of mimicking the phenomenon but isn't an exact duplicate. Phase reversal is nothing new. It's been around at least since the late '60s, when guys would change the wiring of their guitars to get that sound. The push/pull pots are just a modern take on having the best of both worlds. There were push/pull pots early on, too, but they were not as reliable as the modern day ones. They did have a sound unique to them, though. So that is something to consider.

      If you look online there are a few that have detailed how to get your guitars finish to have that VOS look.

  • @bierce85
    @bierce85 12 дней назад

    The gunk is heavy buffing compound. For VOS they just dont buff any finer than the initial heavy compound which leaves it looking hazy. Their standard lacquer has a lot of plasticizers and tends to feel sticky/grimy even on standard production full gloss models so the rougher VOS surface just feels that much grimier/stickier.

      @66falcon99 3 дня назад

      @@Murphy_R9 I have a '68 Black Custom Anniversary VOS model, and, yes, the areas rubbed from play wear have become glossy. But, I clean mine down every time with a clean micro fiber cloth after playing it, and that probably results in the whole guitar looking more glossy. Which, I actually prefer. I am a player first, not a collector. BTW, after many years of owning and playing Les Pauls, vintage, new and reissues, this '68 reissue Custom is my favorite of any of them, and there have been some good ones along the way. It weighs 8 pounds, 14 ounces, and just feels and plays great. I swapped out all the electronics, as I usually do, but kept the original parts. I use the DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge and P36th Anniversary PAF in the neck combination - -tried and true, for me. I thought I would like the '68 repro pickups originally in the guitar, but was not impressed. They seemed fairly pedestrian to me. They take those guitars and modify them with all kinds of different changes, and the black pickup rings are one of the things they frequently change. I have a Taylor AD27E and I can say that it sounds great. I had just changed the strings. The strings I had before were very dead and it made the Taylor sound incredibly dull. However, it came to life after a string change and wow...... Really happy with it now.

      This one was with me for about a year before someone offered me more than I paid for it and let it go. I really liked the Flying V, but never bonded with this one or the next one I got. This one, in particular, was a shredder. The Dirty Fingers pickups made it scream just about all the time. I had to dial it back pretty far to get it to where I could play it without it creating feedback. Which is odd, because the Classic that I had with Dirty Fingers in it didn't really cause that much feedback.

      @ OK thanks for the response That’s my favorite year and model V. As long as I change out the tuners. I’ll find one eventually I hope!

    😆. 'speaking of cheap guitars, here's a $1,700 Martin'. We apparently have vastly different budgets.

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948 26 дней назад

      It was supposed to be a joke. About the fact that, from Martin, there aren't any *cheap* American made guitars. The lowest priced one is the D15M, which is now about $1599 or something like that. When I got mine, it was about $1199 and that was well below anything that Gibson or Taylor offered that was Made in the USA at the time. The nostalgia of owning a Martin is really the only reason that you should buy a Martin. They sound great but there are better options. Especially used.

    Difficult to say, they sound quite similar to my hears. Maybe I need some high-end cans to perceive the differences. Anyway, the J-200 is a lot more beautiful.

    Awesome presentation !!! I have one of these guitars. My first and only Gibson at the moment. I love it. Especially for the price. I got it brand new from Guitar Center. Glad I ordered when I did. It was the last one on the east coast. I'm in NY. Cool little back story. I've been playing for over 40 years, but aside from basic maintenance, I am in no way, shape or form any kind of guitar tech. I am, however, extremely "picky" about the cleanliness of the necks. I couldn't play Iron Man on that guitar the way it was when you first dug in. Almost made me cry...lol Maybe I've been doing it wrong for all of these years, but back in the band days, I always used Lem Oil. No matter what the fret board composition was. Always worked fine. I ran out of it once and needed a quick substitute. The only thing I had was Pledge Funiture polish, so I tried it. I always used it to polish the rest of the guitar anyway. Might be a huge no-no, but I've been using it ever since. I clean and polish at every string change. No oily build up, and super clean and smooth. I treated the Raven almost as soon as I got it. Keep up the good work, man. You have another new subscriber.

    Nice guitars. I agree about the J200. I only wish I had hung onto mine! I also agree about the Gibson Generation guitars. I have the G-Bird which to all intents and purposes is a Walnut back and sides Hummingbird without the bling. Amazing value for the money.

    Can you please let us know why you didn't keep the J-35?

    • @guitarsandgears3948
      @guitarsandgears3948 Месяц назад

      The J-35 was a good guitar, but I just never bonded with it. The sound and feel were good, but not amazing. I guess I was just expecting something different and, after a while of playing it, I discovered that I liked the sound of the square shoulder dreadnaughts better. I like my G-45, but even it isn't exactly what I prefer. The funny thing is that I really liked the Slash J-45 Epiphone model I had. And I really like the Taylor 417. So maybe it was just that guitar that wasn't to my liking? I'm planning to find a Gibson J45 that I like this coming year. Not really sure when, as I'm going to play as many as I can so that I find the right one for me. So that's something that is coming in 2025. And that will likely round out my Gibson collection.

    In/Out means in or out of Phase. Out of phase would be a weaker signal. Pickups that are all negative phase or all positive phase are described as in-phase, whereas sets that have pickups in both negative and positive phase are described as out-of-phase. Out-of-phase pickups have signals that cancel out much of the frequency content when both pickups are on at the same time. I have one in the Wine satin color.

    Ill take that bird anyday, it is very very versitile and has a little warmer sound to it because of the sitka over mahogany. Taylors arent hard to play if theyre set up right. I have a 2013 hummingbird bought brand new. Taylors are a little too bright for my liking and uses. I also refer to a taylor as a modern guitar and sound. Thanks for the demo!

    Just my opinion, but I think the doves build quality is better then the Sj 200 I think the manufacturing process was probably more substantial with the dove the pick guard hand engraved and the flame maple back and sides I also think the paint job it’s probably the best for all the standards models the dove just seems to have the edge to me on the other Gibson models as far as quality goes with the possible exception of the custom shop range

      It's no secret that I am a Dove fan. I currently have 3 of them (1963, 1992 12 String Custom Shop, 2022), all in Cherry Sunburst. So I am biased by my passion for the Dove. The SJ-200 is a great guitar and has a unique sound. It is a great guitar and has a place in any collection. But I will always choose the Dove over an SJ.
