Vega Alta, A Town About A Beach and…
Просмотров 229Месяц назад
This week we visit the small town of Vega Alta, or “vegalta” as my friend Jorge Seijo would say. We visit the beautiful Immaculate Conception Church, or “Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción”, the Gilberto Concepción de Gracia Square that sits right next to it, the José Rosado Negrón Pedestrian Walk (or Paseo Peatonal José Rosado Negrón), the new City Hall building by road number 2, the Lin-Manu...
Corozal Puerto Rico. Can You Guess How This Town Got Its Name?

Today we visit the town of Corozal, in the north central region of Puerto Rico. It’s a peaceful, even quiet, town that’s not laden with tourist attractions, old Spanish forts or turquoise beaches. It has none of that! But what it does have is exuberant vegetation, wonderful vistas and a natural charm that comes natural to Puerto Rico’s mountain towns.People from Corozal are called “plataneros”,...

Today we explore the beautiful town of Barranquitas in the central mountainous region of Puerto Rico. We start at the beautiful Barranquitas Bicentennial Plaza that's one of kind on the Island. Then we enter Saint Anthony of Padua Parish. That’s right! It’s called like the Catholic church in Guayama, except that this one was open. Oh, and did I mention that it’s gorgeous? We also go by City Hal...

This week my wife and I visited the town of Aibonito, flower capitol of Puerto Rico. We started at the beautiful San José Parish, that will be celebrating its 200th birthday in just a few weeks. Then we took a stroll around Segundo Ruiz Belvis Square and ended up at City Hall. From there we visited the Old Tobacco Factory, where we bought an avocado the size of a large grapefruit. Not one of th...
SALINAS… Seafood Capital of Puerto Rico [2024]

Salinas is, without a doubt, the seafood capital of Puerto Rico (I’m biased). It was also one of Puerto Rico’s sugar cane capitals. But that was so “last century”. The food thing is RIGHT NOW!!! In this video we explore the “Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate” Parish, City Hall, “Las Delicias” square with its wonderful salt shakers, the Aguirre Sugar Cane plantation, el “Albergue Olímpico”, the “M...

After visiting 23 towns in Puerto Rico, producing 23 videos, writing 23 extensive blog posts and and updating two of my Puerto Rico travel books in 2023, we thought a month’s-worth of rest and relaxation were well deserved. Besides, Christmas events on the Island fall on the “news” side of things and they’re short lived after the period is over. Last January 22 we picked things up again and vis...
San Juan Botanical Garden, Just The Facts

Websites can be deceiving. Case in point, the University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Garden (www.upr.edu/jardin-botanico/), also known as the San Juan Botanical Garden. By looking at the website you’d think that it’s something like the Washington, Boston or Brooklyn Gardens. But go there in person, especially on your own, and it’s a different story. My wife and I did exactly that on the morning ...

Arroyo, Puerto Rico | What To Know Before You Go

Arroyo, Puerto Rico was one of the towns most affected by Hurricane María back in 2017, and it shows everywhere you look. But above all the people are nice. Visiting this southeastern corner of Puerto R...

Sorry Sir. But supposed rising sea levels from global warming is entirely debatable, and little confirmed by science. And certainly not by unintentional human consumption. But that said, wonderful videos on the beauty of PR.
I produced a podcast about science and technology for over 13 years, so I could give you all sorts of scientific proof. But I’d rather not waste my time. Instead, I’ll just leave you with three words: “look around you”.
Climate change and rising sea levels is not confirmed by science hermano. But that, nice, informative vids on PR.

I haven't been to PR in 6 years but i will be visiting Loiza in two weeks and I'm so excited to go. I can't wait
It’s a nice town with many beaches and eateries. The Catholic church is one of the oldest on the Island. However, it was closed the day that we visited.
Im glad that you Know the story of this town, aplausos para usted!
Thank you. We had a great time in Cidra.
Thank you for this video.
I’d like to say "my pleasure”, but it wasn’t. I would have much preferred to give a positive report. But it is what it is.
Very accurate video thank you.
I do my best. In fact, my original business is called Accurate Communications.
Sounds like traveling in Italy. Thanks for the informative video. You have a new subscriber from North Carolina.
I've driven in many parts of the world and Italian drivers are among the craziest I've seen. That said, New Yorkers and Puerto Ricans aren't far behind.
@@puertoricobygps Hahaha. I just got back from Patillas and we thankfully had some good drivers. :)
I really enjoyed your video. This is a place my grandparents lived.
Glad you liked it. We had a great time.

Glad you liked it.
my family is from here 😁
I am so proud to be aibonitena . I have been living in NY for over 50 years but I don’t forget where I come from. God bless my town. I was born en el barrio Llanos Adentro .God bless my town ❤
We had a great time. I loved Aibonito.
You took the long way too NARANJITO. Get hip next time.
I wasn’t in a hurry and the bridge was closed.
mi pana jafet trabaja en el albergue olimpico saludos
This is the first of your videos that made me feel sad. It's sad seeing a town in that kind of shape. I have an uncle (by marriage) that's from Arroyo.
Sorry for the sentiment. It has never been my objective to make people sad. Appalled? Yes. Angry? Maybe. But mostly aware.
Generations of my family were married and baptized in that church. From 1805
It’s a pity that we couldn’t see it.
I don't have any personal experience with Cidra. I've never been there for anything, don't have family that is from there, and if I went through it, I didn't realize it. But I like it. I love mountain towns, and it definitely qualifies.
The caves and Pilones sounded right up my alley. I love caves, and I love a river swimming spot. The guided tour sounds great, especially for the reasonable price.
When I visited Puerto Rico last month, we took a trip to Patillas to visit a friend. We came from Rio Grande, and took the eastern coast route, which provides some great coastal scenery. On the way we found this restaurant called EL NUEVO HORIZANTE in Yabucoa, which had an absolutely incredible view. The kind of view that you feel in your stomach.
I’ve been there but we don’t cover private business concerns.
The "company towns" is new to me. I became aware of some details that made Puerto Rico seem like a "company island" for Domino Sugar Company under Charles Herbert Allen. There were some details of money conversion, and other injustices that I really didn't totally understand. This is probably a big part of why Pedro Albizu Campos came back to PR, instead of pursuing one of the many offers and opportunities that he had available to him. I imagine he came back to fight against this type of injustice.
Not being a nationalist, I am not an expert on Pedro Albizu Campos and his work. However, I have always considered him a true blue Puerto Rican who wanted only the best for his people. There was a point when all Puerto Rico was basically a huge company town. I guess it could be considered the crudest form of colonialism. But hey, that’s what colonies are for: to exploit them. Much of the same still goes on today, albeit in more refined ways.
I will buy your book titled “PUERTO RICO BEACH BY BEACH”!! Thanks for sharing your lovely stories and awesome videos with the world.
My pleasure.
Excellent video, very well put together & narrated. I love Aibonito.❤
I loved the town. The people are nice too. Thank you for your kind words.
My first job as a teacher in Quebrada Negrito and La Gloria Judith love it😂😂❤❤
I have 2 specific memories of Salinas. One was going from Carolina, where I was staying, to La Pista de Salinas back around 1990. It was back before GPS, and I felt accomplished making it there to see the races. The second memory was stopping to eat, while doing one of the "around the island in a day" drives. And yes, it was seafood.
A lot of good memories there. I was from el barrio ricon de Gurabo the countryside.
We had a great time visiting Gurabo. The mayoress assigned people to show us around and promoted our info on social media. Great town.
All towns in PR.has in the center the same estructure catholic church, city hall and between the public square.
It stems from our Spanish heritage. The Spanish, in turn, inherited it from Rome.
This was 5 months ago in what year. Yes, Arroyo like many other towns in Puerto Rico became worst after Maria. Many of them are usually devastated by bad weather. But let me clarify for you, many towns were in bad condition before Maria. Before they were beautiful Places. Most of them had small store fronts around the Town Plaza and there was plenty of life back then. But I will tell you something many may not know. When private Developers assisted by our politicians, began to build Huge Mall Developments of private entity, the town were left abandoned because the small business owners could not compete with these big developments. Nevertheless, there are still many beautiful places to discover. For one, I recently visited Arroyo and I found it reappealing. I know because I am a native of Arroyo. I see how it is revitalizing. If only Politicians would have use that 1% of taxes collected, that was suppose to be used to Vitalize and renovate the towns, it would be a different story. Show me a politician that has left office being less wealthy than when they enter an Official Government post. They are the ones who manage the economy so who is really to blame. Sad but true, as far as I am concerned. But there is still room for change. God Help us all.
Just so you know, our RUclips video, and its accompanying blog post, were both published in November, 2023. Furthermore, every single word that I wrote is true. For better or for worse, I tell it like it is. I have very little to add to your comments. You said it all so well. However, don’t forget that I make these videos for my entire audience, which isn’t too large to begin with. If I were to be as blunt as you I would be left with half of them.
I was the viewer that commented about being surprised that you weren't Catholic. I would have put money on it. For you to praise Cerro Gordo Beach the way you did, has put it on my to do list for the future. My personal favorite on the main island is La Playuela (aka Playa Sucia) in Cabo Rojo. That whole lighthouse area is magical to me, so I'm drawn to La Playuela because you get to enjoy that as a backdrop. I don't mind that it doesn't have facilities, or shopping, or food, etc. I love that it feels so remote and natural. As a kid, I shared the Lin-Manuel Miranda experience. While living in NY, my parents would send me for a month during the summer breaks to PR, and I would spend it with an aunt who lived in Canovanas. My most recent visit to PR was last month, when I went the funeral of that aunt.
Sorry for your loss. I like La Playuela, but for me it’s two and a half hours away (I live in San Juan). In my humble opinion, the best beach on the larger Island is Luquillo’s “La Monserrate”. Not because of anything that the municipality has done, but because God simply made it superb. Actually, I wrote a book about Puerto Rico’s beaches. It’s titled “Puerto Rico Beach By Beach. My wife and I actually visited the Island’s best beaches and produced detailed written information, photographs, a video of each beach and the GPS coordinates. In total we covered 53 beaches. Of course, Puerto Rico has many more but some are contaminated, others are behind fences and others are what I call “eye candy” (great to look at but deadly to swim in). If you’re interested in the book, there’s a banner on my website. Thanks for following our work.
It was either 2013 or 2014 when I went to PR on vacation, and specifically timed it to be in PR for the Flower Festival in Aibonito. My wife and mother-in-law love plants and flowers, so it seemed like it would be a perfect event to work into our trip to PR. I also took a guided tour into the Canyon about that time, which I really enjoyed. I didn't tour the Degetau Museum, but we did visit Piedra de Degetau Lookout, which provided great views of the city.
I hope you come back soon.
Mi Pueblo bello ❤️🇵🇷
A great video! However, your comments didn't quite cover the paradise that is Maunabo! My spouse is native to PR and a year ago we moved to Maunabo from the US. We love it here because of the beauty, but the main reason we love Maunabo is because the people are so nice, and there is pretty much zero crime. I don't know what the people at the church were talking about when they said the church was not open because of vandalism. Maunabo is a small town where everyone knows each other to some point. I grew up in a small town WAAAAAY smaller in Nebraska (120 people) and I know how small town people overreact to minor mischief that is legally considered criminal. The people at the church, I suspect, told you they weren't open to the public everyday because they overreacted to one one minor instance in the past but I could be wrong. There really is no crime here simply because we are such a small town that everybody knows everyone else's business. Maunabo is special because the society, overall, holds on to the old way of life. But, as a transplant from a small town in the US, I can easily see how people here are overtly cautious for no reason. Maunabo is really isolated in PR. Anyone wanting to visit really needs to make an effort because of its geographic location. There are only 3 roads to Maunabo so it is isolated and that, I think, is what makes this place so amazing! I'm in my 50's. I remember when I was young and people could get credit at a business just on their word. That still happens here, which amazes me! People treat each other like friends rather than just customers. At the time you visited the black sand beach Maunabo had just started a restoration project on the beach to redirect the river on the beach. Also, if you would have went a mile down the road you would have found a HUGE parking lot at the beach rather than the most inconvenient way from the lighthouse on the cliff.
We loved Maunabo, although we felt that ot doesn’t live up to its possibilities. As for the church vandalism issue, it didn’t come from the Maunabo church at all. It’s something that we’ve been told repeatedly, just not in Maunabo.
The easy way is by bayamon I always use that route

Thank you. Enjoy the Island.
We spent 7 days and nights in Corozal last month (on a finca) and absolutely loved our time there!! This was our 3rd trip there from mainland US~ each time we visit a different area of the beautiful island! 💜 your videos!
Thank you.
Another video, Yayyy!!! Thank you, great job btw.
My pleasure.
My memory of Corozal is some horseback riding that we did with a guy named Rafael Torres with PR4Less Tours. He took us horseback riding on trails, in rivers, and on the roads. The roads made it feel real PR style, since you often see that while in PR. The roads was the scary part, since you feel like the horses are gonna slip and fall. After watching several of your videos, I thought for sure you were Catholic, since the Catholic churches are always featured in your videos when visiting these towns.
I always visit the Catholic temples because Puerto Rico has a Catholic heritage. And,believe it or not, there are tourists that go around the world visiting old churches. Case in point: Rome, Seville, Toledo, Segovia, etc.

My pleasure. My wife and I have a lot of fun making them.
I've been to Charco Azul twice. The last time was especially enjoyable. We stopped in Guavate FIRST, picked up some food to go, and brought it with us to Charco Azul. And yes, you better believe that we cleaned up after ourselves. Charco Azul is definitely deep in sections, and jumping off the rocks into it, is fun. Just visually check the area that you are jumping into, for peace of mind.
One idea might be to jump in feet first before jumping in head first the secpnd time. Glad you enjoyed it:
Whoa, the information on El Monumento del Jibaro is news to me. I just visited this month, after being away for 10 years, and I had no idea that the parking area had been eliminated, and that access has pretty much been cut off. I've made several stops at El Monumento over the years. It's always been a nice "rest area" stop to stretch our legs, and think about my jibaro roots. Jibaro to me is not a bad word.
I'm so happy I found this. Thank you for taking the videos and telling what you could about the town. My maiden name is Arroyo, and this is one of the places I'd like to visit some time in the future. Hopefully one day it will be restored.
My pleasure. I hope you can visit soon. Puerto Rico awaits.
