Hi i didnt watch the video but i want you to answer my one question Can i export my game for android without paying?
[SOME SPOILERS AHEAD. PLAY THE DEMO FIRST] Hey! Just played ur game... for like 2 hours. Didn't complete is sadly there is a bug with the mushroom arena where I crash from anything after a certain point. Stil... I'm giving this fucking celeste/10. And I know getting called a game copycat aint the best argument but I don't literally mean: I want copies of celeste so ur game good. NO. Ur game good because u managed to achieve the same thing they did. Make the grind feel good. I have about 130 deaths on second area and 89 on first. So just... I failed a lot. I also scratched my head on puzzles a lot. I kinda... have like no criticism on ur game. Somehow both aspects of it, dialogue and platforming (which are the ones i most love in games) U have done perfectly. Important character have sprites, they're likable, interesting even. Again I can't complete the demo but you bet I'm doing all that again when it actually releases. Imma buy that shit. I love the tether mechanic. It felt a bit unnatural at start but when actual challenges came my way, chaining tethers slowing down time, choosing the right place to disconnect yourself so u don't die quick enough to teleport yourself... masterpiece. Frickin love it. And mushroom kingdom made it feel even better. There is literally no speed cap. I found myself being able to do like a 4 jellyfish puzzle with 1 jelly and snaps. U know how u made the character do a lil jump when she doesnt have the gold energy to tether. Yeah um, that stacks momentum. So jellyfish combined with that is literal celeste wavedash except who cares for the floor or even aiming LMAO Ok I actually have one criticism. Jellyfish. Please on dear god heaven and the holy spirit, add the possibility to aim in them. Ik the difficulty of them is to choose the time to press X at the right time so the angle is right and all, and don't get me wrong when u finally get down the perfect angle it feels fucking phenomenal.... but in the continuous aspect of it i think it will rather draw players away. So some aspect of aiming even if a lil scuffed as the thether is would be really great One HELLA BIG praise i have got to give u. The city. Oh my god the city. Change nothing ever ever ever about it. The style is beautiful, the characters are funny silly shapes saying silly things. But most important i love the parkour in it. I found only one hidden cave there idk if there are more but i had great fun doing math with gold charges to how to preserve them so i could pass 2 ice barriers. And i also kinda love how confusing the platforming in the city is... like that's weird I should want it to be simple and understandable but no. I fucking love it. Especially the aspect if ur on the wrong roof? just slide off it's not like the building the roof is actually on has a hitbox. I fricking love that I have 12 funny flowers (sorry they have a long name I don't remember) And you bet i took my sweet time (and dogshit gaming skill) to get them. Really loved going into each room once again from the previous to just have a lookie at the spikes or possible holes in the ceiling that could lead to some challenge Now the story... really gets me. Its kinda cliche and I don't relate at all but at the same time. I root for the character. When the cutscene with the read pain surrounding us happened, i started mashing the fuck out of A. And when it happened again i did the same and felt sad knowing this time i couldn't have saved her as she fell. The neglect she gets from the elders makes me feel really confused cuz like after all, they aren't the bad people here. Tbh no one is. They just wanna protect her and not in some bullshit abusive way, no, truly protect her. And the character is well a teenager that doesn't agree with their point. And she has a supportive mom! I love that segment when the mom flies in and basically just says, farewell and don't forget to change ur underwear loll. The stealth segment at the night is really lovely and i kinda dig the fact there is no explanation for the stealth mechanic. Just figure it out: well it's really simple so it makes sense but I'm just kinda tired of boxes saying how stuff works. I like finding mechanics myself For the last praise. The tether itself. First of the mechanic feels great to use. And I'm kinda repeating myself but u really just feel cool and energized when spikes will kill u in 1.5 seconds and u need to twist ur funny ghost around a wall or spikes or manage to go thru an ice wall really fast. I also love how u incorporated it as like an actual part of the culture. Like this is a tribe and the adults can just do this. And ur a kid so u can't do it the best, but u try ur best. Man i just really love ur demo. And I will have a big dilemma playing either urs game or Big Catch but I will definitely give you my money and time. Great work man <3
Making videos games is so much fun. Your literally a god building your own world. Deciding how the physics work and all that
"Its something my team and I constantly stress over" Honestly, i think this will have the best outcome. I always have this mentality of perfectionism and striving to make something that is just amazing. And sometimes that causing stress and gets overwhelming. Constantly people tell me "good enough is good enough", but like, i dont want good enough, im not making Doodle Jump here! I wanna make something thats special! If you quit when its good enough, and never stress over making it special, itll never reach that step.
Oh. Interesting. I was wondering why pixel art lingered around. I find that the issues don't affect me too much, if I were to dabble in game design. I want to do a turn based RPG. So precise movements isn't necessary. I also have strong art skills. In the past, I have been able to character pictures on a digital art program and import the pictures to Godot. That is a nice way to make visuals even if I don't have much video game design experience. Maybe a game that has heavy focus in story and 2D drawings would be my style. The weakest reason for pixel art is nostalgia. I think nostalgia and tradition are so overrated. Don't get me started on conservative politics. That stuff is vile and atrocious. I think it is a good thing that video games and movies have better visuals with the CG. Old stuff should only be used when that stuff is good. One shouldn't adhere to tradition just for the sake of it. I guess there is one old thing that I like. The first two generations of Pokemon had great creature designs. Later generations are usually not as good because they are overdesigned. There was crappy pixellated graphics for the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. The creatures had to be simple so they read well in the pixels. This led to much better designs. I think of the poor graphics as a blessing in disguise. Maybe pixel art is good as an excersise to dicipline creature designers. That would be in development. The designs can still be used in good graphics and look fantastic.
what is the game at 3:03 ??
Jusant
Vector and/or pixel art is hard. Basically art 😩
Look for tutorials not only on how to make a video games but also on how to read the documentation. I've never code before so everything is new and strange. At the beginning I struggled reading anything, but a weak ago I noticed that I was able to scan through the doc looking for what I needed. So eventually it does get better. Use your doc, ask for help in forums or even AI to learn how to read. Try to write your own code, though. I am about to get into the second month developing something really small (I'm just looking for 20 minutes of gameplay). It's a marathon guys, so keep running even if it's just 1 hour after your day job.
What you definately do need to make games is friends. Even if you're capable of doing all the work yourself, the game needs to be tested by someone who isn't the developer in order to find bugs and to judge the visual apeal.
Super huge part of dev for sure.
I try every day to code, I always learn something. Then I become confident enough that I can make something and bam, I realised that I know only 0,1 % of Godot and that I understand no shit about it. Then the cycle repeats
If you tried to make something every day for 1,000 days and improved by 0.1% each time.. you'd hit 100%.
I just tried to watch a tutorial and make a platformer yesterday. And I gave up cos its hard, I'll try again some time.
Gmtk has a flappy bird tutorial that helped me get a better hold on the basics. Made that game every day until I didn't have to use the tutorial.
I did the same when starting to learn godot but when I coulnt finish it i decided to make ping pong on my own and only watched tutorials when i got stuck for specific problems like how to make the ball bounce I actually encourage not learning by following tutorials unless stuck but by experimenting and trying stuff on your own
I would really like to play the game but unfortunately, it doesn't really work well on my Linux machine
I started with as little knowledge as possible. I had just started to use RUclips and Google and that's when I learned about indie games. I learned from RUclips mainly until I had a good enough understanding of code to use Google more. after 2 or 3 years I got Tomas Brushes course which unfortunately didn't have anything to offer me. I started using ChatGPT last year and would highly recommend! I now have a rather strong understanding of how to make 2D games and love making top-down shooters.
GameMaker is a great engine, but I personally switched from it to Godot as Godot is completely free and I find it to be much more powerful than GameMaker. Godot has a huge community behind it, has great tutorials, supports multiple programming languages, and is constantly receiving awesome updates! Engines aside, I agree with Jordan 100%: You can learn to make games today! Just push through the first few days/weeks and you will make great games!
Great video
I think only the free version of Spelunky was created in Gamemaker. The devs made their own tools for Spelunky and Spelunky 2. But another great game made using it was Crashlands. (And I think the upcoming sequel.) The Butterscotch Shenanigans team have been big proponents of GM.
Excellent call-out
If you want to make games then shut up and make games. That simple. If you need any help with certain parts just google it.
bug fixing is the worst, and the game may be working perfectly on your computer but in other is completely broken; can never completely get rid of bugs
What game is shown @0:24?
I see another person asked, Octopath Traveler.
*Great video. And it's just called "GameMaker" now* 😃
This is seriously great news for me lol. "Gamemaker Studio 2" is a mouthful...
That looks like a fun game.
thanks!
Some bugs are caused by chaotic gameplay, lol I've learned to always expect people to try to do everything they possibly can, even if it makes no sense to do so in the game, so when testing, act like you're crazy lol. Like that one pixel in the corner of your tutorial when pressed crashes the game or when rapid pressing buttons, sometimes the inputs are faster than the calculations and limitation blocks...
Love the little gameplay/future level tease at 1:54! 👀👀 I hate to admit cuz I know it caused you hours and hours of annoyance and work, but I LOL'd at the various bugs in town after the ceremony cut scene😅 Happy Holidays O. & Co.!
I was wondering if anyone would notice! Happy holidays :)
I think the gold standard when it comes to fixing bugs and adding quality of life features is Factorio. Every studio should take notes on how Wube handles all that stuff.
Legend say that if you tether ghast to another planet, to save your sister, and confront your nephew gone mad, you die peacefully 😢
huh?
@OandCoGames cough, the last jedi, cough
I wish game maker debugger could detect when a specific variable is changed, would save so much time fixing bugs.
The main reason why pixel art is still so popular is because it's an "Art of Freedom" for giving devs better time at doing everything else in the game Meanwhile there is an ever growing ULTRA realistic style that, even though looks hella cool, is: 1. Expensive 2. Hard 3. Very limiting in its nature And those stuff are the things indie devs should avoid when doing games
Am i the only one weirded out by that video about bugs not explaining how you fixed any of them? I feel this could be a good way to get into some of the more technical stuff and show how the tools you talked about actually help you debug the code daily (a subject a lot of programmers don't know about nowadays, unfortunately), especially since this is such a huge part of gamedev. I understand this is supposed to be a non-technical devlog, but it felt like i watched only the first part of a video about fixing bugs and it just stopped there. 🤔
lol yeah you're totally right. I should make a follow up video that gets into the technical aspects of it.
He should have returned with 7 cartons of milk.
For real though. "Get a carton if milk." (1 milk) "If they have eggs, get six." (+6 milks).
You should seek therapist at this point
This is great to see and very encouraging for someone to approach bugs in such a way. Thanks for sharing everyone!
2:54 that's me! Sorry Jordan for giving you headaches hahahhah
They're necessary lol
bug = a whole lot of print statements (a least that’s how I squish them)
lol for sure. I also have a debug mode where I draw variables directly to the screen during game play. I really should have a video on details about that, stepping through frames, using the debugger, etc.
bugs don't exists, it's just an interaction you never code, like if a+b has no result. 😅
Instructions unclear. I hired an exterminator and the guys that came had no idea what to do.
a spider is not a bug though
I see you were served thumbnail option B…
Colloquially
According to whom? Spiders are bugs!
Always a good day when O and Co posts a new video!
4:07 the elder ring...
Never forget.
Love hearing about your process and seeing the incredible progress you guys are making on Tethergeist!
Just as deah and taxes are a constant in life, bugs are a constant in programming
This is gospel truth.
I’m the 12th viewer! Keep up the work!
Thanks for tuning in so early!
You bet!
I’ve been playing so much hollow knight that when I saw the word ‘bugs’ I immediately thought of hollow knight bugs, and didn’t realise it meant bugs as in glitches
bahaha, it's funny when I searched for "bugs in video games" Hollow Knight showed up way more than topics about glitches.
Xd
why everyone is so obsessed with that game??
Because it’s awesome! You should play it if you haven’t.
1:07 you are right! and i will help make it even more special in anyway i can !
You are a wonderful human being :)
@@OandCoGamesnot just human, a geist! 🔎👀
Played the DEMO for a whole day now, this is a sleeping giant <3 the look, music, atmosphere of the setting AND the gameplay mechanic is on the same track as Celeste! the track to our HEARTS! Tether Geist will be very important. thank you!
We sure hope you're right! It was awesome spending time with you on your stream!
@ pleasure 💙
Pixel is just a simple but effective way to express art. More like you can use the best out of 50x50 canvas
i thought splasher was a known platformer, it was design for speed running too.
I'll have to check it out!
Love this!
