Brother Signature 510 Typewriter Review: An Olympic Rivalry
I have a Triumph Perfket that's almost exactly in this body style -- almost identical -- and let me tell you, everything he said in this vid is true. Even with a platen on the harder side, which can certainly be reconditioned, the machine is a dream typer. The key feel is right up there with the Hermes and the Torpedo 18b. If you can get one -- do it.
How do you remove the platen on this machine?
I just picked up a 300T for $2. My boys are really intrigued with it! Thanks for helping me make sense of it as I couldn't find a manual. Would love to see a video describing some basic maintenance to make it work smoother.
The best part of owning a typewriter is when you sell it and forget.
Does anyone know whether or not all of these models and all the different colors have the artistic script? I just bought this exact model but it's cream colored top charcoal gray blue bottom. The listing didn't say that it had their artistic script so I'm just curious. Thanks for the information!
I don't think there's any correlation between color scheme and typefaces. It just depends on what the customer ordered or factory produced. The ribbon color selector will only be white/blue if artistic script.
Okay thank you. I just bought the same model but a different color. It has the cream color top but a battleship Navy gray bottom. I'm excited! Thank you for your excellent video!
GREAT overview of this machine... Wondering if you can explain the Ribbon Return mechanism on the Contessa... I'm troubleshooting a contessa deluxe and can't work it out! Would love some help
What would be your estimated value for something like this with all the paper work from the original sale?
Hey dog, hope you are doing well. I have just got the same model but in a 12iin platen. mine has a problem, which is the paper release not releasing the paper in any position. I think the problem is the wrong size platen (diameter too large). can you measure the platen you have and tell me the size please? thank you!
I have a Chevron version of this model with Bulgarian standard Cyrillic. It's pretty boring actually, I very much like the game of colors by Olympia - white down, black up. Apart from that the only other difference is that the automatic key is on the right and it's red.
Interesting!
Wich typewriter do you recommend to write a book?
Thanks for valuable instruction on the various features. It's helping me get used to my Adler. What a great machine!
Glad to hear it. They are awesome!
I have a green and gold one 😉
It's my latest replenishment, but as the the Soviet licensed version Liubava(Любава). I bought it from a man who told me that his father have a business in Russia at the time and it's most likely for it to be brand new and never been used. It looks perfect actually and it have the factory plate with the year of 1987 written, which is so important. The polished plastic exterior is so respectful. By the way Robotron and Daro are one and the same machines and models, just different brands.
For our Bulgarian market the OMEGA 40 was known as Maritsa 30. The typewriter factory in Plovdiv, had two product lines Maritsa and Hebros. Maritsa have five models 11, that looks like a small Optima from the 50s, 12, 13 and 22, very similar to Adler Contessa, Maritsa 41 which was an electric one, 20 to 30 kg. weight, as I call it big mace because of that heavyweight, pretty much a GDR design like Optima M16 and Robotron 20 and 24, and Maritsa 30 is the latest. As for the Hebros to my knowledge there ware two models - 1300 F and 300 which is an electric one. I love the styling of 1300 F with two colored plastic exterior black in the center surrounded by oil green, white or red in the periphery. 300 are oil green, white or light blue. The interesting thing about Maritsa 30 is that the Royal badge on the left exist along our badge on the right side.
Wow. Great Information. Thanks!
I have the K-Mart 300 and damn, it's a looker! Is yours a firm typer? I suppose it's all relative, but it takes quite a strike over here to type. I do have the setting on "L." I'm just wondering because while it looks SO good and I got the green/black ribbon in the mail from you, I feel like I really have to make an effort and it's not as pleasant of a typing experience -- and maybe I wonder if I should keep it? The "a" and shift are especially firm/feels like higher tension. Thoughts?
ummm, I think it is just dirtier than I thought :).
Thise are really nice machines.
When I graduated from high school in 1979, my graduation present was an Olympia B12. That typewriter served me well through college, even letting me keep working on term papers when we had a city-wide power outage, which caused headaches for friends with electric typewriters or computers. I still have the B12. It's a great machine.
Wonderful
What material are those royaltype cartridges made of? Is that a standard plastic? Almost look like that hard glossy bakelite, although that's about 15 years after it stopped being so widely used.
Ribbon spools are plastic. Shell.is aluminum
I got one for $15 bucks. It was filthy, soaked it in mineral spirits, carefully used rustolum on a few spots. Carriage wouldn't move, found a video showing the tabulator(I think) being stuck above the carriage, and that was it,. The magic colum set button will be depressed if you have this issue. Sometimes the carriage grinds, but moves. It's beautiful, it moved with each key strike, I loaded my paper for the first "the quick brown fox..." then the RIBBON VIBRATOR WON'T RISE. I take it apart, nothing, it looks perfect. I toil away, and read forums, and look for replacements, then I find a post saying "Make sure it isn't on stencil mode" it was. Now it works perfectly, but jesus. The lengths I've gone to for this typewriter. It better be glad it's pretty. Same story with my lettera 22, took some work, but it's typing. Spool nuts were tough to find Typewriters have vibrators and nuts, it's so obscene. Great channel, tho happy to subscribe.
Great job
I just bought one of these last week for $20 and I am over the moon. I can't figure out the year, though. I'd like to find a manual so I can play with all the levers and maximize the features. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Google keeps trying to send me to the "Automatic 10", but it's not "automatic" version.
My typewriter is the B12's stablemate, the Hermes Precisa 305. It appears to have the same typeface as the B12 and personally I think it's a great machine. The industry gave it and the B12 some negative reviews at the time, but I don't think they are very fair to be honest. I'm not isolated in thinking this either. My British Hermes doesn't have the ! though, so I have to do the old trick of ' backspace . to make the !
Early laptops.
What is the difference between a Royal Royalite and a Royal Companion. Your video answered my question. I may be buying a Companion Made in Holland.
Do you know why mine stops typing half way across the page, even though the margin is set several inches further? I can’t figure it out :(
Steal….I see what you did there. Clever. 😂
Ah, I wondered where the zero was; it’s the capital 0. Thank you Kevin. I’ve learned much.
Hey, I have exactly the same model even from 1944! There is something wrong with the platen knob. It is not perfectly attached to the axle.
awesome. perhaps the set screws are loose on the platen knob?
Hey I just found one of these typritr and when I turned it on it wrote well, but now when It turns on it will not type, what can I do to fix this?
Ok edit I had to just reset the thing and something is extremely loose in there, or it's a darn coin sorry to bother
I don't think these came with a line lock
Funny you say that, I think you are right, and I'm working on an Aristocrat (same machine) and there is NO line lock.
Wonderful and beautiful machines, both of them ! As Olympia only made typewriters with metric character spacing, the SM3 is actually a 2.3 mm per caracter pitch and the SM4 is a 2.6 mm pitch (just a wee bit bigger than10 cpi).
Interesting detail. The NOMDA typestyle reference lists them in imperial 11 cpi, 10 cpi etc but metric sounds more precise.
@@toddpayne true, but that was for the American and Canadian markets, before metric was more known and actually adopted in Canada. So it made sense to use cpi, a system that was known in the US and Canada, even though it was an approximation for European machines.
I just got one. Really great typewriter. I love my old ones too.
Wonderful!! I'm lucky enough to have one of the gold plated Royal Quiet de Luxe typewriters from the 50's also !! Fun to see yours.
Thank you for the nice video! How do you actually detach an Erika Daro 41 from its case? I just got one in good condition for 15 euros, but it definitely needs some cleaning before I start using it. I just want to remove it from the case first, but can't see any obvious way of doing it. I don't want to experiment and risk damaging the case or the typewriter by accident...
And of course, as soon as I ask this, I figure out that you just lift it up. You were right about surprises; mine was only an old Läufer Corall eraser stuck under the machine though. :)
Olympia traveler é igual a olivetti tropical.
Olivetti tropical também é o maquinario da hermes baby dentro.
Hi, I just got one of these typewriters and I can’t seem to get it out of the case. I can’t find a video for this specific model either. Do you have any tips? TIA!
press the button that opens the case to release the mechanism that locks the typewriter into the case
Absolutely love your videos 👍
Thanks Doug, we had fun on this one!
I have the same sensation as yours on the SCM Corsair, however, I have yet to tackle ghosting in some characters, that I attribute to my stroke technique and not to the flimsy design of the Corsair. However, some reputed techs have pointed to design flaws in the SCM Corsair! Of note is that during my University years in the 1980's I used a friend's dad SCM Sterling with cursive type to type the papers and assignments that I had to turn in as dad's Corsair vibrated too much... Currently I have two SCM Corsair's. The older one belonged to dad. It has a Spanish language key lay out with the notable Costarican currency sign which is a C with two diagonal slashes, not to be confused with the ¢ cents sign. The currency sign of the Costarican Colón, was compulsory in an all typewriters to be sold officially to the public in Costa Rica. Dad's Corsair is due for a new old vibrator plus the paper holding rollers called here in Costa Rica the felt. He gave it as a present for his constructor to give to his daughter for her to learn to type. I bought it back from him but it was in a neglected state! I've had been unlucky to find the parts either here in Costa Rica nor on eBay. I have a second Corsair. It was supposedly a donor machine, but it came in such a great state that I decided to retrofit the ruler that was missing to make her whole! The parts came from England. I currently use it to type poetry that I find in books that I've collected over the years, photograph them and send it to a couple of WhatsApp groups that I belong to. They have my "From the Desk of Robert H. Bruce" printed in letterpress as I work in a printing shop. I ordered a Lettera 22 on eBay and it arrived from Argentina with Spanish keyboard! I started learning Italian and to get acquainted to the gorgeous language I listened and read the captions on the history of Olivetti. I was then smitten with the Lettera 22! Then I did the same with the slaying of the poet, screen writer, author and producer Pier Paolo Pasolini and there was this picture of him using a Lettera 22. The Lettera 22 in olive green has arrived in New York City to my niece's and it's headed for service at Gramercy's. I hope there is nothing wrong with it. It is a long way from Argentina to NYC and back to Costa Rica! Though I hope to have it soon in Costa Rica. Perhaps, it will not exhibit ghosting! Thanks for your report and the voice of your assistant! I hope Kevin learns to type soon!
That's great. I'm surprised your professors allowed a cursive script report!
@@toddpayne It was more a gothic cursive and not manuscript, perhaps, it was the uniqueness of the machine typeface that allowed me to turn in the papers without having to re-write them!
That’s great that you introduce your child to what I grew up with and I’m 74. Learned typing in HS at the age of 16. Been typing ever since. I only use manual typewriters. I have 18 of them. 90% the great Smith Corona. From the 40’s through the 60’s.you fantastic painting. I wish I was your next door neighbor.
Thanks so much! Happy typing!
Very beautiful machines! I've never seen the gold trim on SM machines before, so really interesting. I have a maroon SM2 with black keys, and it is easy on the eyes too. I'm glad you mentioned the rubber mounts, they are a common problem. I shudder to think how many machines may have been thrown out simply for lack of their replacement. The only remaining issue with the Olympias is that the platen tends to go pretty rock hard, and that makes them fairly loud thwacky sounding. Gotta love them though!
Thanks! they are wonderful. the hardest platens I've ever encountered have always been Torpedos - they really set the "diamond" standard :)
Very cool machines. Gordon and I have emailed back and forth over the last couple years about various machines. His collection is huge and I would love to see it. He bought one of Larry Mcmurtry's Hermes 3000 machines. I have invited him to our Plano type-ins. BTW, our next one is May 11th at the Haggard library. I hope that we can see you and your Oompa Loompas there!
Hey there. A little late to the comment party, but here's my 2c. I have a Hermes Baby which is basically the exact same typewriter as that Lettera 82. The only differences are the ribbon selector, the key shapes and the case color. Mine also has a different typeface, and quite frankly I like yours better. Other than that, same thing. Mine has the paper support, so I do believe that is probably a one off thing in the case of your machine. My parents bought the one I have a bit before I was born, sometime in mid to late seventies and it still works fine to this day. I hope you have fun with yours as much as I have fun with mine. Cool video :)
That video is so special. Good copywriting!! Love the boy reading at the beginning.
😂 love the typewriter drop footage. Thanks for this review.
Turn off the music when speaking!
Is it easy to find replacement ink?
Good to know that the lettera's 82 are all Brazilian made. I have one, yellow, script typeface. Nice video! PS: the first symbol you mention is the one we use for cardinal indication. 1st = 1º
I will be picking up the same torpedo 18 in the middle of January fully restored with original paint same color as yours with script type face it will also be the most expensive one in my collection but a must have totally worth it.
Thanks for the terrific Adler background. I have a Tippa S in the mail right now, and can't wait to compare it to my Brother Young Elite -- especially their relative snappiness. And of course, the difference of carriage lift vs. segment/basket lift. Your son is getting a nice insight into the "interconnected-ness" of it all. Would love to find a concise explanation of the DIN Ribbon conventions. Do you have any tips for someone "coming back" to a typewriter vs. word processing? And also, does a typewriter usually say somewhere on the machine which typeface it has? Thx again.
Thanks. Hope you love your machine. They will tell you if they are pica or elite by the numbers on the paper table 90+ is elite. Actual typeface is shown on the slugs with a forge code. You then Google Adler typeface and NOMDA will show up with Id of your typeface. Tips: don't sweat the typos ;)
I have one of these and still use it today. It is in my desk in my bedroom. It was my mother's until she gave it to me and it is like new. Works perfect no chips or bangs. Those rubber grommets are still soft so they work. My mother was the first owner and she only used it in 1 semester in high-school then put it away for 2 years in original case.
I have a 12. I love it. Same color. In fact, that's the primary reason I bought it, because I liked the look. However, as you noted, the platen is rather hard and could stand to be redone. Yet, despite that, the only time it tries to pinch a hole with a single sheet is the period. Thicker typing paper is a solution for that. One thing i don't like is that I also suffer from the space bar. It doesn't seem to be quite sensitive enough. So that seems to be a common downside of this model. Only problem with the case is that one latch is broken (it's still secure) and there isn't enough room for the cord unless you do it up JUST right. Common problem in those days.
