So it's oppasity
Getting the right level of opacity is important
This was really informative, thank you got the content
You’re more than welcome homie, there’s a free patreon to stay up todate! The RUclips algorithm isnt the kindest
Thankyou for the informative video. Ive been painting with oils for little over a year and i still learn new things.
Great video. Love oils!
thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! You and Luke converted me into painting with oils and I haven’t looked back. I’m just figuring out how to not leave brush strokes lol.
haha im glad buddy, if you ever need help follow the free patreon for all the updates advice i give there
Thanks, again a very motivational video! Currently I am painting an acrylic project (moonstone miniatures) but after that I plan to start an oil project with a restricted palette (Zorn). I have there 2 sizes, one is a normal 28-32mm miniature and one bigger, 72mm. Which one would you take as a beginner with oils, the normal one or the bigger?
Hey buddy, I would suggest using the larger model first as its kind to more experimentation. I'll have a 75mm model on the patreon very soon
We went to the Holborn museum in Bath earlier this year. These paintings are truly amazing when you can get up close and see how the brush strokes were applied.
Absolutely Frugal. Nothing like it!
You*
@@TheEnd haha thank you!
@OmegaonEdge, I couldn't help but notice your brush seems very damaged on the tip. Is that on pourpus or you just haven't gotten a better one yet?
For this process a shaper brush wasnt needed, though if you want to get very detailed which I probably would do going back in, you’ll want a shaper tip. Just depends how refined you want it. However, you can get a more splayed mark if the brush is less sharp.
Hi, great videos, :) my good sir. They are inspiring me to try oils, but I would like to ask for your opinion on the Floow oil paints from Scalecolor. From your experiences, is this paint range good for someone who wants to try Oils for the first time and not invest a ton of money in artist grade paints? There are like no reviews of this line, and most of the other creators on YT are not even showing this paint range.
@@AdeptusTerra1990 I could do a review for them if needed but I think they’re a great alternative. Only issue is that you need to guess the opacity. Check out my review on the ABT paints. And I painted 2 models with paints from this range on RUclips- check the rest of the profile
I had no issue applying acrylics on top of oils in the past. Maybe first letting it dry a bit though?
When you apply acyrlics ontop of oils there will be a bonding resistant film over the surface. It’s less noticeable when the model is dry but interrupts consistency and can cause to texture build up in that area. It is almost impossible to apply over oil when its wet.
"We are going veteran because wr played Space Marine 1" 😂💀💀💀💀 I think normal is already hard ^^
@@CerxiS I was absolutely destroyed
Great video Boss! Did you put your oil paint on a wet pallet?
@@mr08evox thanks dude! Yes indeed but always depends on what I’m doing
Thanks for the video. I paint more in your style than others using oils on utube. So its nice to see a better painter painting in a style i understand.
@@garyjenson1326 word! I’m much more about doing things properly and in a way that’s easy to follow and understand. This should give you the more refined results you’re after
"Negative reviews from the oil painting community": Yes, compared to top-of-the-line oil paints like Schmincke Mussini, Blockx, Old Holland, Talens Rembrandt etc. the Abteilung oils are of an inferior quality. They contain a lot of oil (as a filler instead of pigment), their coverage is not so great, some are rather roughly grinded, some colors are off (their black is a dark brown) and so on. There is a reason why they are so cheap compared to premium oil paints. This is not that much of a problem if you use them for what they are marketed - weathering. But if you really want to paint with them...nah. Buy "real" oil paints. I have and since then my Abteilung oils are rotting in my drawer. Honestly, the better oil paints are better for weathering too. But as I said, they are quite an investment unfortunately. At least they will last you forever ;)
Its new version show the pigment, PR4 PO13 PY1 PG8, not so lightfast if it's trustable. and ridiclous 🤣PY41 NBk6. In simple, worse than i thought.
I love your stuff. I have a pile of the old range (mostly because coming from acrylics I was unsure what to buy and they were sold in all the places I got models from). It didn’t take me long to realise there was no opacity labels! I really appreciate all the stuff I can pick up from your videos!
@@credo3612 yeah me too I have the entire old range. Definitely glad the opacity labels help a ton and now it’s clearer to understand what you should use
You mention using a brush with a sharp tip. Any recommendations for a decent brush to use with oils?
👆 This. What would you recommend?
@@frugal10191 hey hey brother Frugal, brushes I recommend are Rosemary &Co sable brushes. Or Windsor & Newtons Series 7. With brushes you’ll just need to make sure you clean them and paint gently. None of this smashing or splotching the paint on our minis. Hopefully that helps!
Great video! I'm a bit rusty with oil painting on minis, haven't done it in a while, only just got back to oil washes recently. Using baking paper is an interesting idea!
Thanks buddy! Yeah, it really depends on how you like to work and what you're doing. I don't tend to use paper when im not planning to thin my paint as much.
Arachnophobe plays Space Marine 2
Fab video! Thank you for your kind words about my angel! I'm so glad you liked her :)
Ah it was you! brilliant, really eye catching and probably my favourite of the show! Keep up the great work

thank you!

Thank you well chuffed

Great video man
Appreciate it. Was good fun homie will definitely do it for future shows
Great vid!
So cool 🦎🖌
looks really good! i like the way you broke down your process with the references and all!
Where are the other oil fundamental videos? Or is this the only video labeled this way? Part 5?
Hey homie, the others are on my patreon
Brilliant, loving the tutorials, the figures look amazing 🤓
Glad you like them! Hope they’re helpful
Thank you for this video. It really got me thinking again to start painting oils.
You should! Hopefully these guides will get you more comfortable
Thanks for your time and effort. Im painting with oils since 3-4 years and I cant go back to acrylics, so much fun. Relaxing Video mate thanks !
You are so welcome!
Hey, currently I am thinking to paint some models with oils using the Zorn palette, can you tell me what is/was the drying time of this models? BTW, very nice channel and you are truly inspiring me to start with the full oils, keep up the nice work!!!
thanks for the kind words, this model took around 3 hours to dry to paint and 6 hours to cure fully
@@omegonedge if I can, I would have an another question: on what type of surfaces did you paint the oils? Matt, satin or gloss after priming and zenithaling the miniature? This is the part which is absolutely not clear in oil painting for me
Great to see another dedicated oil painter on RUclips. You and James Wappel are the only ones I know of currently putting out videos regularly. Would love to see you go back to fully cured painted models and work with glazed to pump up the contrast and saturation even more. Also would love to see some more videos on vehicle painting and weathering with oils. Thank you!!!
Glad you like them dude! Theres so many subjects to cover. I tend not to go back to finished models once im done with then. Maybe at some point ill go through the models and refine them even more. Probably not for now though. As for vehicles that’s definitely on the way!
I was wondering when the alpha legion stuff was. Guess I’ll be checking out the Patreon.
Been focusing on the fundamentals but the cooler stuff is coming!
Wow, the process is nuts. At first it looks... pretty bad, but holy as youkeep going this really comes alive and becomes beautiful. This takes so much more time and patience, love the result.
Hahahah i try not to think of things as bad at that stage, its all about developing and finishing it off. Glad you enjoyed it though
@@omegonedge I stress over that stage so much myself haha
@@ErgonomicChair comes from doing it a lot and knowing what something should look like when it’s done init!
Great video! Do oil paints dry a shade darker like acrylics do? Just wondering if that needs to be taken into account when mixing your colours.
@@clive_maloney thanks homie! No they remain the same way as when they’re first applied- it’s one of the great benefits !
This is awesome. I've never seen anyone paint minis in oil before. Looking forward to seeing more from you.
More to come!
Liked and subscribed. These models are looking pretty cool.
Nice unboxing and thoughts on the set! I'm very interested in this release, it's been tempting me for a while now!
@@SamDavies94 yeah I’ve been enjoying it I’m excited to get onto the Stormcast though!
I use acrylics for details over oils with no problem....
I agree about investing in artist grade oil paints. I actually find the expensive brands like Old Holland or Michael Harding much easier to use because of their high amount of pigment and how easy they are to dilute to the concistency I desire. They are also more forgiving when you stipple them on the miniatures.
Oils have really changed the game on my painting journey. Really appreciate videos like this that show more appreciation for oils in our hobby!
@@LeonValenti it’s great fun glad you’re enjoying it homie
I'm patiently waiting for mk5 armour, aka the "Heresy" armour, ya know...the armour named after the heresy due to it being the most common type, its as if GW forgot that
Ahah i want my Mk2 homie! Been waiting way too long
@@omegonedge my point is the poster child armour of the Horus heresy game should be mark 5, it's literally named after the event and was the most common, but no, we got the mark 6, the mark which was rare and used near the end of the heresy, really annoying
Very helpful I’m starting a tyranid army after finishing my death guard army in oils. Trying to figure out the most efficient way to get the skin and carapace finished.
Glad you enjoyed it dude don’t miss the other parts if you haven’t seen them already
