m54b30 head porting (just description of what I did)
This is not tutorial of what to do while porting m54b30, but just for demonstration purposes for you guys that wonder what m54b30 head ports look like and what could YOU do. Compared to the head ports of the other engines, bmw or non bmw, this is by far the worst I have seen so far :D
This engine is still running great, it has been over 3 years since this video clips were recorded.

any plans for different intake or some diy approach for ITB setup?
@@ivanfilipovic3296 Yes i do, nobody is talking about n52 single stage disa intake manifold. I believe it would do great on m54 engine without any drawbacks. Making ports for injectors should not be a problem, but time and money is :D. Also I dont know if it would fit in terms of size and angles. Apart from n52, n54 manifold with spacers is really interesting and tempting to me. ITB could be good, but its the most expensive route.
@@TomoReso so happy to not hear m50 2.5 intake for once, overjoyed actually. Around x-mas i will port and polish my own head and have it as spare so race is on for the biggest outputting m54 NA in Croatia :)
@@ivanfilipovic3296 Its a deal. :)
You can polish the entire exhaust port for extra flow. Looks good from what I see.
I should have done that, I have searched and found out that dimples work too, but at the long radius. All of this is really addictive stuff to me, but there is less and less time as life goes on... :)
Thanks for sharing. I would've done something very similar as well. I'm surprised your exhaust valves/seats weren't pitted.

@@TomoReso well, 0-100 seems quite good, ~5 sec. then from 140km/h it couldn't catch up breath. for daily street driving I guess it's fun to drive. I've got M54B25 and was thinking about M62. for street purpose it would be enough I guess.
@@luptakt its just like you said. For b25 it would make a lot more sense, if you can make it for cheap, its a great little mod.
@@TomoReso one more thing. M62 was used on US 3.8l cars. so it depends what you expect from supercharger, what is your power goal. the problem of this is, that with turbo, if the power gain is not enough, you just replace turbo, give it larger intercooler and you're fine. with eaton M90 or M112, you need to start from scratch. custom bracket, custom piping, another belt, etc. nothing fits. I'm not going to race with it, but I'm sceptic... so exactly as you said, if you can dyi it completely for cheap, then it's great little mod. unfortunately I have doubts that I can completely dyi it. :D
@@luptakt m62 is easy to fit as its quite small, the biggest hussle is to make a bracket or carrier for it and align it perfectly so the belt is nice, tight and straight. The rest is not a big deal. You forgot that tuning supercharged engine is far more simple then turbo, and does not require often a new ecu/standalone. IDK, if you were close id gladly assist you.
Amazing work!
Hey Tomo. Any tips on how to do this properly? Planning on rebuilding an M54B30 this summer. Thanks!
There was a forum with head flow comparison, m54, m50, s54 etc, and there it was clearly shown that m54 stock intake is the worst. I can make a video of what I did, basically I have cleaned up the intake port, there is a lot of cleaning to do. Not only the cast marks, but uneven transitions etc. Most of the time ive spent around the valves and valve guides, I did not enlarge the port openings even one bit. I did the same for exhaust side, but there was far less job to do as I remember. Do not port the shorter radius side. You want smooth consistent ports with nice transitions, larger is not always better. You want the size to be efficient and just enough to not choke the engine. What I did also was add an angle to the valve seat and the valves as well. Ive also modified the chamber side of the head as well, when valves open a bit they have a flow path all around them now, unlike before. If you are not in a hurry I strongly advise you to look up David Vizard on yt, he Is an elderly man extremely experienced and has a lot of videos explaining what works and what doesnt. Also put video speed at least to 1.25, youl get why :D. I really think I did a good job, there was gains and no losses, but sadly I can not prove it now as I do not have the logs no more and an engine is supercharged. I could tho remove the supercharger and make few more maf logs and compare it to other engines. I urge you to do logs before and after.
@@TomoReso Thanks a lot for the super detailed reply! I was planning on installing an M50B25 intake manifold (which ideally needs port matching - hence the original question, why not go a little further, especially with the cams!), Schrick 272/256 cams, Mahle forged 10.5:1 pistons... the goal is to make it a nice OEM+ street engine with proper pulling power up to 7k. The car has currently got an M54B22, and I definitely believe a few horses have left the stable. It already has a 3.38 diff from the factory and even with the cams and M50 manifold, the B30 will make a good bunch more torque than the 2.2 so I'm fine with that. As long as it pulls hard above 4k and sounds good, I'll be happy :D What tools did you use for porting? You did everything yourself, without any professional help, correct? I'll definitely look up David Vizard. I was planning on learning how to log and remap with this project too. A friend has experience with remapping on E85 so we'll work on this together. Especially given how much info there is out there! Thanks again
@@nvl2691 M50b25manifold produces awesome sound above 6500rpm as to where m54 dampens the sound a lot. Powerwise dont expect a lot from it (manifold alone). It seems like a cool project, will sound and feel nice. All of the work I did myself, using basic cheap tools. Electric drill with cord extension if its called like that, and various bits i got with it. Also spraying wd40 on aluminium or the bits every now and then keeps the bits from filling with aluminium, makes for the better work. Took me about 15+ hours to port the head and valves. Could be done faster ofc, but I always think like i have to do it only once, slowly and patiently, and ive made no errors in process. I actually quite liked the porting job, was fun. Always glad to help if I can so no worries.
Great results and advice, if you could take the time to make a video and discuss it, I'm sure it would benefit the M54 community. Thanks!
@@TomoReso what do you think about porting m54 exhaust ports to the same size as the exhaust manifold and the gasket?
What about the fuel? since you are using the stock ECU, did you make some fuel adjustments after you added the SC? I'm planning to do something very similar, and for the first part of the project I want to use the stock ecu

I really want to do this but without raised rev limiter. I see the in-gear acceleration is visibly faster even in the stock rev range (up to 6500 rpm) so it should make a difference regardless
It will, yes. There is quite a lot ignition advance on this little engine.
Btw this looks quite slow, maybe u have clogged DPF. I advice u to gut it or get a downpipe. That allows you to push 240hp 500-530nm with lower EGT.
It does not look fast yes, but looking other videos on yt, it does seem on par or faster then many...
lol slow what u mean thats very good for 220hp and its weight why talk nosense.
You can't push that much torque on stock turbo, if you have dyno figure with that much torque then it's a fake dyno. Do a 100-200 kmh with dragy or gps and check it.
@@piovo1 yes you can push that much on b47. You need intake and downpipe

You should be worried, the car was my brothers, then we sold it to a friend. It has known history and was serviced every 10k km. His timing chain broke in the morning on literally no no throttle, 50 meters from his house, at around 1000rpm. There was no chain noise, i have changed few chains already on other cars and i know what noise to listen to. So, my advice, if you like your car and would like to keep it, plan to change the chain. Dont go for cheapest chains, but swag brand is durable enough, best would be oem.

im considering to buy a e46 320ci, but the problem is it has a mileage of 250000km, which is alot. its sold for 6000 euro, and idk if its worth it or not. its been recently eu certified untill 2025. Do you have any opinion on this?
Those engines are bulletproof if maintained properly. Same goes for e46 as a car. Engine as an engine is really reliable. IMO if it does not consume much oil, like 1L per 1000km, you will be fine. If it does not consume oil, the rest is simple, few gasket changes, sensors, rubber boots, not a big deal if needed. Its a great car and an engine to own if you can do the simple mechanics yourself. The community is great, many parts available, and its an never aging design. I will own one e46 ci myself one day. Its a blast on a track day with it, beautiful daily car with just enough of tech with it. If you do decide to look it up, please take it to a lift, check for cracks at the subframe mounting points on chassis as well as front suspension tower cracks (if its called like that). Check for corrosion too.
6000 is way to expensive. I bought my manual 330Ci M-Sport II for less than that and with 223'000 km (it's my profile picture, miss it terribly). I just bought a 320i 2.2 Touring manual with 289k km for... 300 euros. Running and driving

Is the 3.64 open diff good for daily e30 320i? 129hp
That was my car setup originally, its decent yes.
b22 has very low stock ignition timing for high rpm, even compared to other same series engine maps it strikes out as it was limited on purpose.
Exactly, maybe in near future i will go and remap it again, this time loaning a dyno, to see what is it capable of.
@@TomoReso You could do knock map whit rr it was around 30 some for me if i remember correctly, throwed 50€ b30 cam there but base tune is useless whit those and most gains come from ignition tune anyway since its so mild.
@@TomoReso You might want to eyeball b25 fuel maps and full load maps a bit once you go closer to knock limit whit ignition tune.
@@winha1435 that is more or less what i did here, i went slightly more agressive then b25 with ignition. Fuel is not needed to adjust. Weirdly enough b22 has more ignition advance at low to mid rpm, less up top. I dont remember what i did with vanos and disa. I did do small adjustments too.
@@TomoReso it has so much so at low that rr register it as knock, b22 factory bin is a fuking mess :D theres some randomnes on b25 maps too, it looks like b30 is only one that is ironed out.
Whats ypur offer , 3.64 or 3.45 m52b28 +zf 5 speed on e30
3.45 is probably the best.
Somebody saying 1 and 2 very low with 3.46 . Whats your top speed with 3.64
@@aniluzun2321 yes, you need 3rd gear to reach 100kmh, very short gearing, but in my opinion by far the best ratios, really gets the most out of b28 engine. Top speed with 195/50R15 and 3.64 diff (e39 gearbox) was about 210kmh @7200 rpm, gps speed. For 3.45 diff @7200 rpm it would be +10kmh, so about 220kmh gps. 1. gear max 53KMH 2. gear max 88KMH 3. gear max 135KMH 4. gear max 185KMH 5. gear max 225KMH I currently use 2.65 and for daily its great, but it kills the acceleration a lot even with m54b30 (3.0l) engine.
@@TomoReso whata your offer for me bro, i have m52b28 engine Zf 2.8 5 speed gearbox 15 bbs with 205/55/15 / 215/55/15 3.64 or 3.45 i. I could not decide. I don't want it to be bulky either.
@@aniluzun2321 well, best improvement i ever made on e30 was 225/45r16 handling wise, and the feel is just right! I would go with 205/55R15 which is right dimension for E30, or 205/50R15 which is wrong, it will read wrong KMH, but looks better. 3.45 is very good ratio for E30 with around 200hp. 3.64 is maybe a little bit short, but good as well.
Hi Tomo, I'm doing the same conversation now. :) Do you have a picture of the bracket for the throttle cable and did you use stock cable?
Sadly I dont. I do remember I was cutting it and welding it, you can see the placement ive made on this video. I dont remember about the cable either, I usualy work with what I have at hand. The cable had to make 180 deg turn to pull a throttle, which isnt optimal but it worked flawlessly.
@@TomoReso yeah i saw. I think I might gonna use a rhd cable to get some extra length. 🙂 Did you change anything in the tune for the bigger injectors?
@@FilipBorjesson yes, ive used m52b28 pink injectors for correct spray angle, and ive had to change fueling by some percentage, i cant remember how much, i think it was 10-15%. Maybe i can find the map, i think a friend of mine has it still on a laptop, as back then i used his laptop for the tune :D
@@FilipBorjesson here you go, to the left is stock m52tub28 fuel map and full load enrichment, to the right is m50 intake on it and pink m52b28 injectors. I see i have actually added more fuel, not less, meaning they were smaller then original injectors... i.postimg.cc/65DW7WHv/image-2023-08-13-193315368.png Also, there are gains in ignition timing and vanos settings (even with original intake manifold). But this is best to be done on a dyno. Also its worth to mention ive used wideband o2 sensor to dial the fueling, 14.7:1 idle, about 12.5:1 full load.
@@TomoReso I'm now complete with the conversion but the car runs very bad. I haven't used your table yet for tuning but the pink injectors should be bigger than the stock long tip ones. I might change to green m50 injectors and try if that will improve the engine.
Transmission zf ?
Yes.

@@TomoReso zdravo naisao sam na vas video Dali ima uputstvo kako mogu ga sam cipovati na stage 1
hey what happend after the video ? did you stil use them, did they crack even more?
Hello. I sold them after the video to a friend that used them for drifting and burnouts, for cheap. I have replaced them with a set of new nankang ns2r, also 195 50 r15, and im really happy. I just bought a 2nd set of ns2r in 225 46 r16 which are now on the car. No negatives compared to rs pro tyres, everywhere better a little bit, and no cracking.
Gain nothing
very little
@@TomoReso gain more top end because air flow into cylinder head more efficiently and since valves will be closing faster that little bit of extra air that can go in the cylinder is very important
@@sun6262- I am really curious what ive done with this porting. I am sure that i didnt lose anything at the very least :D I was thinking of dynoing it many times now without a supercharger. I just as well might.
@@TomoReso on a stock engine just a ported head alone will maximum give it 5-8 more hp cause added CFM but a head with more mods like a better cam that has the intake valve open longer will help even further, those two mods alone with a good tune possibly adding 40-50hp
@@sun6262- I agree, I'l try and make a video of what I did, mostly showing how bad ports are in m54 and m52tu heads. I am sure porting can be beneficial, I'm planning to ditch the supercharger I have and go for a regrind camshafts, custom intake manifold, and maybe make exhaust headers even longer. I bet I could squeeze 280 crank horsepower, which would be enough for my E30, anything more would be just great.

Hello. Motor is double or single vanos?
Motor was double vanos, m52tub28, with m50b25 intake manifold.
@@TomoReso Ok. How you connected ecu and wire throttle body? originally is cable + wires
@@mladenrs4203 Throttle body is m52tub28, original. Electronic jack is connected as original too, the only problem was steel throttle cable holder, so i made an adapter, not hard to do.
