Quitting Games Won't Fix Your Problems
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always heard people tell me that one day I’ll grow out of video games because they’re for children and I’ll find more productive things to do with my time. The last time I checked, I’ve entered into what many would consider adulthood. Therefore, I think it’s high time I explore why this sentiment doesn't actually hold any weight.

Why You Should Finish That Game You Hate

Why Gaming STILL Isn't Respected
Просмотров 514 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Have you ever wondered why, despite being around for decades, video games and gamers still seem to have a stigma attached to them? While it's not nearly as obvious as it was back in its early days, it's hard to deny that gaming still feels like a hobby for the outcast. In this video, we explore why that is and if we can do anything about it. X (Twitter): derajjp Instagram: instagram...

1:31 in the Spanish translation, Rex says: "Si ellas dos estuvieran aquí..." "Ellas dos" means "those two", but "ellas" is used only when all the subjects are female, otherwise it would be "ellos" (All male or mixed). that means he's definitely talking about Mithra and Pyra.

I really dont care if anyone hates gaming. If some guy came over to me while I am playing something like Bloodborne and talk shit, I would just ignore and keep playing. Gaming is about accomplishing and having fun. Whether you are playing Minecraft with friends or Kicking Gwen Lord of Cinder solo in Dark Souls. Gaming is meant for everyone. Its also the best memories personally. Mainly cause I played so much skylanders with my brothers as a kid.

I come back here, I think not just as a hobby gaming needs more respect but how many people do you know who still do not respect the grit of getting good at a video game? compared to how many people you know do not respect the grit involved in getting good at a sport, so many people I try to share with are like "It's a game" or "Anyone that good is addicted" (normally other gamers who say that who are not real good which is fine but respect the effort someone puts in to get good at a game) addiction is real to just saying to

If anything for gamers sake, you should play the earlier xeno games of the series such as xenogears by squaresoft (still available in the PS store as a PS classic as of 2021). Also, the xenosaga episodes one thru three developed by namco should be taken into consideration. Although to find and expensive to purchase these ps2 exclusives, they are. The great Yoda has spoken. 8:40 that is a non issue. I like video games despite being really not good at so many of them. I still like the Contra games even though I am really bad at playing them properly. My timing is always off the charts and I misjudge enemies movements. Same for fighting games. But in couch co-op this can be a fun thing to experience and to see how I start to synchronize my play style as time flies. I like video games since they did their magic on my during the 80s. When I saw these arcade machines for the first time. Dig Dug, Pac-Man, Xain'd Sleena, Wonderboy in Monsterland. Man this did it for me. Also playing the Atari 2600 was kinda weird and fascinating. The NES, The Sega Genesis/Megadrive, The PS1, N64 and so on. I saw and experienced it all, even owned many of them myself. You don't have to be good at something to enjoy it. The overall appeal matters and what connects you to it.

Video games still have a stigma because the majority of people still thinks in competitive patterns. Video games are seen as a threat to sports activities, overall human health and social & political propaganda. People playing video games are more immune to outside nonsense. They shield themselves away from harmful nonsense we can hear, see and experience every day. Most humans still think that theory of evolution means to compete against ourselves on every level. Of course this is nonsense and neither what Darwin ever meant nor what every evolutionary biologist ever claimed. But humans are humans. Especially with this competitive gaming we have for over a decade now. This makes gaming now look like your ordinary game show. An entertainment for people that can catch a glimpse of what gaming is about when watching these competitive apes losing it over video games. And that makes gaming seem wrong. Let's say I was born twenty years ago and I would have seen these gaming competitions as a young man. I always knew that this competition among humans is neither evolutionary nor healthy in other ways. I would have avoided playing video games entirely. Bragging rights? No thanks. Social and political agendas? Leave me alone! People bringing those stigma about themselves. Gaming was never more than a nice niche. Now every jerk wants a part of a cake that is artificially bloated. And everyone can watch and wonder why we are wasting our time like that. I stay out of this competition BS and play games for fun and personal experience. Nobody ever calls me a loser.

"Video games are a waste of time" coming from hollywood and new york people who, drink, smoke, hire "escorts" and get venereal diseases spending ludicrously crazy amounts of money on drugs, go to clubs to sit around with other people or dance mindlessly, binge eating to the point that people have mental conditions based around vomiting, spending money on beauty products and spending hours in the bathroom, people who visit rich people islands to commit "leisure based crimes", not to mention the people who waste their lives being workaholics (which is it's own form of entertainment as toxic as that is) all of this cutting their lives short by about 20 years, and some risking jail time for their habits. If this is being an adult, adults should be imprisoned! People who play games are the same as people who read books. We just don't waste time on the weird quasi-suicidal crap you guys do. This scene is anything but overlooked, it's a core part of the hero's journey: The fifth stage on the Hero's Journey is the Abyss, or disaster. In this stage the character goes through some major loss. This may be nearly dying, *failing to save others,* being imprisoned, *dishonored, seriously injured, robbed of their Supernatural Aid,* or on occasion all of the above. The Abyss is the major turning point in the story when the hero is broken down to an all-time-low.

I think a minor amount of gatekeeping is always going to be healthy for any arbitrary circle of interest. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to take over discussion of certain topics and lowering the common denominator of a fandom dilutes what makes it unique. So as much as the waste of time argument annoys me, the people making it are generally people I wouldn't take advice from anyway. Keep them out.

  • @belstar1128

i think at this point pretty much every man i know under 40 and every woman under 25 is at least a casual gamer .i think that a lot of older people will never change their mind no matter what. i think that when tv was invented there were simply more young people because older generations had more kids so the opinions of those generations became less relevant more quickly you also have gen x that is kind of a strange one since video games existed when they were young but were not very common yet so many people of that generation wouldn't even see a video game until 1985 if they lived in a rural area while others had the lasted games as soon as possible and most women were scared away from video games because it was marketed as something masculine. and i hope people wont take this the wrong way but women are just less likely to try out things that are new and unpopular and experimental its starting to change with gen z but a lot of relatively young women still have this penalty . also another thing that may be politically incorrect but i recently saw a lot of anti gaming comments from certain people online but turns out those people were Indian in countries like India video games were a rare luxury until the 2000s or even 2010s .their mindset about gaming right now is like America in the 80s so an Indian born in 1990 didn't grow up video video games while an American born in 1990 did so the Indian millennial has more in common with an American boomer .with the internet you can sometimes have these strange culture clashes were they don't realise they are talking to an international audience. also it seems like the media really hates video games more than the average person so this can distort peoples view of history they make it seem like playing video games as an adult was socially unacceptable .like playing a game boy in public was like playing with toy cars and you were seen as crazy but in reality nobody cared they just didn't get the appeal of it .

7:00 i noticed that in some other countries anti tv hysteria was a thing until the 1980s but America and the uk was ahead of the times when it came to tv and you also have to keep in mind movies had existed since the late 1800s .so this was just a way to watch them at home and you can even argue movies themselves were just pre-recorded theatre that is a form of entertainment as old as humanity

4:40 to be fair in the 1970s video games were very rare you had a handful of arcades in major cities were they were mixed in with pinball and nobody owned a console or pc until the rise of space invaders and pac man when gaming became more of a major thing but at that point he was already teenager. and while the nes was good the nes marketing made it seem very childish so any adult was going to avoid it same with most 80s consoles

Videogames are such a part of me that I can't really imagine my life without it. I still have other hobbies and I'm not addicted because sometimes I take accidental breaks, but if I'm being honest whenever I "screw up" such as staying up late, not studying enough or skipping a workout its mostly a roll of the die, sometimes its Reddit, sometimes its RUclips, sometimes its Videgames. At the end of the day, I've accepted usually the problem is myself and that's OK, videogames just happen to be a convenient scapegoat because they usually have a longer runtime than other forms of media. I do think you should diversify your media consumption and definitely exercise or at the very least make attempts at taking care of your body with a decent diet and good sleep, but if I'm being honest life would be kinda boring without games.

This is a topic I've always been passionate about. I love video games, and to see people continue to promote this rhetoric about everything being an addiction is so frustrating. If it weren't for some of my favorite series, I wouldn't be who I am today. Video games are a part of me, and I love them. Art, through any medium, is NEVER pointless. There's always this idea about it "not being reality," and that's so wrong. It is an art form; it is entertainment. Art is made by humans based on their observations of the world. It is inherently tied to reality; it is *real*, and it is *human*. I could go on, but it isn't necessary. Good video, man!

Thank you! Yeah, I agree 100%! I understand when people argue that fiction in and of itself isn’t the way the world works and therefore not “reality,” but what intrinsically makes a movie or video game any less of a “reality” than say, a book? What then is their definition of reality? Great points!

I played a lot of Smogon Singles in the competitive Pokémon scene before I eventually put it down in college, after my online friends quit. While I didn't enjoy it anymore, my time spent was was far from a waste: it taught me how to think abstractly when I brainstormed new builds for the ladder, as I could conceive of them as ideas and pieces. It let me center teams around unpredictable movesets with actual plans, and enhance my rhetoric on forums.

Boomers: "Video games are a waste of time" Also Boomers: *proceeds to put 60,000 hours a week into Candy Crush* In all seriousness, I think that certain games ARE a waste of time, but most are not. There are certainly a lot of games that exist primarily to waste/burn time... for example, I find there is little point in playing online shooters or something of that nature aside from just burning time or getting good. And hell, a lot of f2p mobile games are literally INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to waste the time (and money) of the player. I prefer a game that will have some sort of obvious positive impact on me. Xenoblade has had an immense impact on my development as a person and my core beliefs, and many other games have also impacted me positively on a smaller level being teaching me a lesson, or helping me come to terms with things. Even then, depending on how you play said "time-wasting" games, they can still have a positive impact such as developing friendships with people you play with. I might not care for shooters, but if a group if friends has a blast together playing a game, then that is a great thing to see and I'm happy for them. It's downright silly to say that video games as a whole are a waste of time, because if that was true, the same argument could be made for every single TV series, every single movie, every single BOOK... frankly, EVERYTHING we do could be considered a "waste of time." If some activity has any semblance of positive impact on a person, then it was NOT a waste of time for that person.
