The average LPGA pro has a driver swing speed that is only 2.6mph faster than the average male golfer who swings his driver at 93.4mph. To address this, Golfing Focus completed another comprehensive analys...

How Much Does 1 Degree of Loft Affect Driver Distance?

Because golf is such a hard game, and regular golfers are typically time-constrained when it comes to getting better, they often search for quick solutions to complex problems. And given players are always on the search for more distance when it comes to their drives, a speedy solution which is often considered by many is simply to change the loft of their driver. But given driver loft is 'dyna...

Very insightful and as usual well researched
Many thanks Oliver. Much appreciated 👍
Interesting question is why do players seemingly prefer i210s over the newer i230s? Maybe the i230 players are the newer members to Ping's roster and where never given the choice of the i210s, or maybe it is something else I speak as an i210 player who has tried the i230s and found they were slightly lower spinning clubs As for the shafts as i80 Steelfiber shaft player I am not surprised that it is popular on the LPGA tour - I have a similar club head speed to them, just not as much talent! I have been told in the past that Steelfiber shaft play a little stiffer than the designated flex so a regular is closer to a stiff shaft than a normal regular
Agreed Justin and definitely interesting to discuss what you can take from these decisions. Looking at the changes since we last did this analysis a few years back and they definitely seem less willing to change irons than drivers especially. Also seen quotes from some players, even sponsored ones who won’t change unless the launch monitor numbers show them a clear benefits. As for the graphite shafts really wonder whether LPGA pros use of them will persuade more amateurs to use them.
What's the brand/model the unsponsored players play the most?
I recall reading somewhere that it is PING
Have had a number of requests for this and looking to see what we can pull together 👍
Charley Hull plays a full set of bladed irons and she's remarkably beautiful! Coincidence? I think not! The only question remains is: Do only very attractive people play blades or do blades make you attractive? 😂
I started to play the Nippon PRO 950GH neo and love it. I played their Modus 105 for a while and it just didn’t seem to work for me as well as the 950GH. Given my swing speed, the LPGA is much closer to my game than the PGA. Some people aren’t shaft sensitive but I am.
That’s great. Delighted you’ve found a set of shafts that work well 👍
I really enjoy the content you are giving a unique and interesting view thanks
Many thanks for the feedback Ron. Is much appreciated 👍
A nice little 30 second summary would go a long way, great video as per usual though. Will continue to watch thank you.
I’m really surprised none of the pros are playing the Fujikura Axiom shafts yet. Every reviewer I’ve seen has really liked them
I’m sure Fujikura are hopeful they can translate their dominance with wood shafts into irons but for the moment it seems True Temper have a big strangle hold on the iron shafts of the top pros. Nippon shafts definitely finding some favour too though albeit well behind True Temper.
I wish people would distinguish between cavity backs and hollow bodies. T100 vs T200 for instance
It’s an interesting one. We’ve done videos in the past breaking the iron categories down more - blades, players irons, Players distance irons etc - but feedback was to keep the breakdown to cavity backs in it’s widest sense vs blades. Something we can look at again though for future editions 👍
Interesting vid. So Scheffler altho playing standard grips, with the layers they’re actually playing bit bigger than midsize if I’ve understood correctly?
Many thanks and delighted you found the video interesting. And yup the players tinker with varying amounts of tape wraps under the grip to create a size that matches their specific requirements. For some pros a midsize grip is too large for their liking but a standard size grip is too small. So they will add extra wraps of tape underneath in order to get that grip size absolutely spot on.

I was gifted a full set of Adams Tight Lies carbon composite irons. It was a tough start. 20+ yers later, I own a set of Nike Vapor Fly to play on course so I only go to the range with blade like clubs. 😅
Great work
Many thanks. 👍
A drive here is on very hard ground. Therefore it rolls a very long way
Many of the modern irons, especially those in the game improvement category, are virtually mini hybrids. I’m 67 years old and was always a good iron player. I currently carry only up to a 6 iron ( 7 iron distance is 155 ) . I currently carry a 7 wood along with a 4&5 hybrid. I’ve experimented with a 6 hybrid but I prefer my 6 iron ( Cobra Forged Tec X ) Most information video on hybrids and how to select which ones to carry that I’ve seen. Thanks
Many thanks Matt and delighted you enjoyed the video. Love the experimentation you've been doing to find the right set up and sounds like your iron distances are still well up there. Would take a 7-iron 155 carry distance myself any day 👍
While I think you're correct, most amateur men have more in common with LPGA golfers than PGA men... I think a WiTB dive is only relevant to pros without a sponsor deal. Id like to know what pros would play if they weren't paid. When Adam Scott's deal with Titleist expired, he was playing Miura irons by choice. It also seems to be trend for pros to play more forgiving irons due to the penalty from a mishit blade. I play blades and probably shouldn't but a missed shot (or 4 missed shots/round) doesn't cost me a ranking and quite literally $millions$. I love the look and feel of blades too much to give them up but I know more forgiving irons would be a better choice.
I'm with you on the blades Bruce and can't give up my MP-32s myself even though I certainly should I suspect especially around the 4-iron, 5-iron mark. The sponsorship question is an interesting one and like you are many of our viewers who think there is nothing to be learned from any sponsored pro when it comes to clubs. I think there's no doubt it affects what they play but still think there's lots we can learn from all of their set ups particularly on the LPGA Tour. However for many there's no doubt its a big issue when it comes to potentially following what the top pros use.
age 72, have played golf since age 12. Have been fortunate to retain flexibility with no physical limitations, hc 6. Hit my 7 iron 160 yards stock. Can press it to 170 if needed. Irons are 2 year old Callaway Rouges with AreoTech steel fiber shafts. Believe those shafts are making a difference for me distance wise. Driver distance is 240-245. Seems a bit light compared to my irons, but good enough for me. Playing the country club course I grew up on this Thursday. Will play it at the tees I used in my late teens and early 20s, which was the last time I played the course, basically 50 years ago. Am really interested how where my drives and approach shots end up compared to my young years when I was using a Power Built persimmon driver and WS blades for irons.
Those are great yardages for sure and especially with the irons 👍 All the best playing your old course and would be great to hear how you got on!
Did some research into the graphite shafts played on the LPGA-- Steelfiber by far followed by KBS TGI with a few UST Recoil. I'm very surprised there's no MMT, LA Golf or Axiom.
I play Steelfiber, just an incredibly stable unfussy shaft for someone around LPGA tour average swing speeds
Upcoming video due on that very subject soon 👍
Recoil is the best graphite iron shaft in golf! Especially for their swing speeds!
That’s because the average male golfer also thinks he should be playing off the tips when in reality he should be playing from the whites.
For sure. Don't think the Tee it Forward campaign is having much of an impact unfortunately !
Yep. I see it every time I play golf.
Sponsorships I guess distort what would be best but if they weren’t good then they wouldn’t be used. Also I did enjoy your club fitting
The sponsorships one is a tricky one for sure and I agree that there's still loads to be learned from their set ups and choices despite this. Thinking of having an interview with an expert club fitter though to get their thoughts on the best aspects of a pros clubs regular players can learn from is that would be of interest? And delighted you enjoyed the club fitting 👍
Thanks, really appreciate it. I've tried to watch LPGA tournaments over the years (sadly, harder to find w/o a cable subscription) because it was clear to me that I would do much better modeling their swings and course strategy as something I might achieve than the admittedly exciting hero shots on the PGA; those are great to see but no where near what this mere now 68yo fit mortal can achieve.
Glad you enjoyed the video.
The average golfer should take note of this. Very well done. Agree that as example, if Ping (no knock here) is paying lpga players to use their irons and PXG is not of course the player is going w ping. They need to put food on their table and get through the tour. It’s just math. Good review. 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback. It is much appreciated. 👍
Most used? Putters.
Big dominance of Nippon 950gh pro shafts in irons……
Nippon iron shafts certainly do seem to get well used across all the Tours. True Temper obviously dominate a bit more on the men’s tours but Nippon certainly seem to have a lot of pro users
I love these analyses. However, it seems to me that sponsorship certainly skews these choices. I would sure like to see an analysis of players that actually spend their hard-earned money on clubs. Do any such players even exist?
Many thanks for the feedback and the issue of sponsorship is a really interesting one for sure when it comes to what us regular players can take from the clubs the pros play. Has been a recent GolfWrx article on what free agents are playing in the PGA Tour but not found anything comparable yet on the LPGA side. Will keep digging though. Also think there’s still lots to learn from their set ups even taking account of the sponsorship point. Wondering whether an interview with an expert club maker would be of value on this point specifically if it was of Interest?
I don't think any LPGA player in the top 100 spends money on clubs. At that level, you get whatever you ask for. Sponsors do skew the data but looking at all the players still playing Ping i210, I think there's a lot of freedom but also a lot social norming. That's just how women work biologically. Ping i210, Callaway Apex, Titleist T100, Srixon ZX7 are the most popular irons, NS Pro and Steelfiber are the most popular shafts.
I wonder how far down the ranks we need to go before reaching players that are primarily self-funded (college? High school? Haha!). Also, these days, I have swing speeds more like the LPGA than PGA players so I'm very interested in those players.
@@mdwags99 They don't exist. Vast majority of unsponsored college and grade school golfers are funded by parents. We need to stop with this pure individualism as a virtue nonsense. Individualism and authenticity culture have failed.
@@mdwags99 More videos coming up on the club types of the LPGA Tour pros 👍
In future, kindly refrain from inserting the six seconds of ghetto music, which is always most offensive to discerning ears.
Very interesting, particularly the lack of popularity of Mizuno and Srixon, considering the fact that connoisseurs speak so highly of these brands.
Indeed. A lot of people suggesting they would be much higher or on top if there was no sponsorships involved but difficult to tell for sure of course.
Not connaissor… sponsored!
Mizuno doesn't sponsor near as many players as the other brands. I know that they are among the most popular clubs among unsponsored players on the PGA Tour, I'm not sure if that is true on the LPGA Tour as well, but I wouldn't be surprised.
@@Trivi10 I'm with you on Mizuno and I've still got my old set of MP-32s which I absolutely love. Not sure on the free agent point though on the PGA Tour. GolfWRX just did a recent survey on 14 free agents in the top 100 world rankings and only one was found to be using Mizuno irons.
i strive to get to a point where this information will be relevant in my game
Wow the first bag at 56 seconds in looks like mine! Love it. Keep up the great gear related vids.😎👍
Thanks for the feedback Mary and that’s v interesting regarding your bag set up. All this LPGA info is definitely making me re-think my bag also and question the top end especially. Bit of my ego tied up in their too I suspect which doesn’t help 😂
Good video 👍
Many thanks Matthew. Much appreciated 👍
If you are pass 60, use a 12 degree driver. Period.
But what if your swing means a lot of dynamic loft is added on top of the static loft? Wouldn’t 12 degrees then mean you hit the ball far too high?!
This was very reassuring to know I think I have the right setup . 10.5 driver, 16 degree 3 wood, 20 degree 4 hybrid, 6-P irons, 50 degree , 56 degree.
Great stuff. Delighted you've found a set up that works well for you. You're missing a few clubs out there though aren't you? Do you have more hybrids in there beyond the 4?
there must be quite the gap between your 6 iron and your 4 hybrid
@@inflatablemooseadventures 6 iron (cobra radspeed one-length) with a game-improvement modern loft of about 24 degrees , 4 iron (mizuno fli hi) designed not to be a distance hybrid but simply a 4 iron replacement (similar spin characteristics). The gap isn’t consistent but I would estimate the average about a 20 yard gap. It’s reaching the top end of my bag so the next gap to 3 wood is about the same, and then between 3 wood and driver is about the same. It’s just how I’m delivering the club. The gaps between my irons are about 15 yards each.
Interesting stuff
Delighted you enjoyed it 👍
Excellent video! I do not know my driver speed but my 7 iron is 84-86mph. Current irons start at 5 iron, 22 degrees of loft. Looking to see what loft hybrids I should get to add to the 5-UW irons.
Many thanks. Delighted you enjoyed the video 👍 And best of luck with the hybrid testing further up the bag!
The improvements in the ball and clubs since 1990s has been unbelievable. In that period of time I have gone from 30s to 60s and only lost a little distance. BUT I no longer try to hit say 4 irons and the longest iron I have is a 6 - switching to Hybrids and Woods (7, 9, 5, 3) was the best thing I ever did. The second was using a softer Urethane ball - the Pro balls are great to chip and putt, and also with the Driver, but with the PW 9 8 7 irons I lose 10-15 yards. Get the right ball and clubs as you age is the best advice I can give. My 7 iron goes 140.
Absolutely agree and no doubt the change in the ball in the last 1990s / early 2000s was huge for the game. Suspect like me you remember the balata days which just wouldn’t allow the top players to hit it like they do now. Think you’re spot on also with your bag changes and more should be following you 👍
@@GolfingFocus Yes indeed mate - I played a balata ball -a few times. It was great to chip and putt - but with the driver I only hit the fairway 2-3 times. I loved how east it was to hit over a high tree - but I hated how much spin with driver. A fade became a big slice - but a draw became a hook and was way worse.
@@AussieBob999 And a bad shot let you with a ball with a big smile on its face! 😂
With no contract, 95 out of 100 would use pro v
Interesting. You don’t think the Titleist sponsorship with them being the biggest means they’re played more than they otherwise would be?
How about looking at iron use based on top 20 GIR rankings? Just a suggestion.
Thanks for the feedback. Something we can consider for the future for sure 👍
I’ve switched from Pro V’s to Wilson Staff Model, and I’ll never go back. They’re longer off the tee, with better spin around the greens. Phenomenal, yet very overlooked golf ball, in my opinion.
Interesting. What’s the price differential? And how long ago did you switch?
@@GolfingFocus Identical price as Pro V. About a year now….
@@jamiesloan7259thanks for sharing. And what was it about the Pro V’s performance that you thought it needed a switch away from?
@@GolfingFocus A buddy of mine gave me a sleeve of the Staff Models to try, or I would have never switched, to be honest. As soon as I saw the distance difference, and watched one 2 hop, and stop, on a long chip, I was sold. My only complaint about the ball is the clicky sound.
Surprised Bridgestone doesn't get more love considering they've partnered with Tiger for so long. The Bridgestone Tour B X really is the best ball all-around IMO
It’s been a surprise for sure given Tiger’s success more pros haven’t tried using this ball. Maybe the money from Titleist is just too good?
The MaxFli Tour and Tour X balls are just as good as any of these for 2/3 the price.
It will be interesting for sure to see if there’s a lot of take up of this ball compared to the standard premium offerings out there.
4:52 That looks like a wild slice swing.
Tiger did not use a Bridgestone ball in all his 15 major wins!!
Yup, it's a confusing one especially when you think of that Masters chip at the 16th in 2005. But Tiger's Nike balls were made by Bridgestone. Here's a clip we found of the man himself talking about it - twitter.com/MyGolfSpy/status/1087688553486864386
seems like half pros like 10.5 and the other half are 8.5 - 9.5
They play whoever is paying them.
Yup lots of people saying the same thing Stephen. Do you think there’s anything to be learned from the pros set ups though even in spite of the endorsement deals?
@GolfingFocus sure that every club manufacturer can make anything with precise detail. The brand doesn't matter, it is the match of the golfer swing to the correct specification aka fitting.
I am 22 with a heavy sports background. I started around Febuary of this year. I hit my 7 like 165 i hope that once i get more consistent i can make it do that more regularly.
I'm still looking for the best drunk driving utility iron
Now this is what we need - actual data
Carry ping g30 19 and 22 degrees, fairway wood 4 in 17 degrees good spread for longer approach shots.
