To Arms? How to String Arms on a Doll
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.5 лет назад
Latex bands are darned near impossible to come by these days. When stringing a doll with these bands, try to have enough tubing to cut yourself several. A nice crochet hook is important for ease of insertion. I used an "H" hook. Doesn't Rhett look nice? I bought the tubing at Lowes.

A cat brush? A CAT BRUSH?? Well, yes. Sometimes things that have nothing to do with dolls can be useful in restorations. Watch what happens when you apply the brush to fleece and brushed cotton.

Yay for the UPS man! I got two new dolls, but the biggest prize was the doll trunk. There are actual travel stickers on it from New York and places in Europe. I'm thinking that the Alexander doll went on an adventure with her mommy. By the way, her original dress and slip were in the trunk, so win-win all the way around!

Thank you Sunny and Lola for this wonderful little doll! I'm sure we're going to have a great time restoring her. You'll see one of the hazards of restoring these dolls, the rubber band broke! But she'll be terrific when she's done, I just know it.
oh how disappointing. looks like a mark hartley quality repair
I love your accent you're great to listen to
Dodi, what kind of paint is your base, and what oils do you use?
Tbh, rotten dolls sounds like a cool band name. Poor baby tho :( it's face is so sweet. It's really cool to learn about antique dolls, that's why I love your channel!
Ok just to clarify, the glue you made with the gelatin and vinegar is what you’re mixing in to the saw dust? Also you’re using that same gelatin glue to glue the doll back together? Also, using this glue allows you to use oil based paint, correct? Thanks!! Love your videos!!! ❤
Can you list the repair materials you used here please? Thank you! ❤
What do you recommend for this doll if it’s missing an arm an leg? Any replacement options? Or rebuild? Thanks!
If the doll has that much crud on it, just imagine the effect on the people in the house.
Is it possible to sand the arm to smooth out the texture before painting?
Looks adorable 😊
Great video! Where can I find the larger diameter tubing for connecting the head down through the torso to the legs on a Madame Alexander 8 inch doll? I've been looking everywhere and can't find it.
Looks nice!! Do you do services on anyique dolls.? If so i have a little one thsts body and limbs that neec painted
Hello, looks nice i have a question . Can i use oil base paint on my composition doll without sanding it down? Do you know? I am unable to sand my doll so just wondeting how i can paint it . Do you do a restoration service for other?
What tool kits do you recommend for removing old paint? Just exacto knifes and protective gloves? What about when you get to the little grooves in the face? Beginner here! Thank you
Love you Dodi❤
Oh my gosh Dodi I will miss you so much. Last we spoke you were getting better. I was so looking forward to you teaching me more. Rest well my friend. Prayers for your family.❤ Love you
I'm new to the channel and love all the information she has shared. I see she hasn't posted videos in a few years. If you don't mind me asking what happened?

Rest In Peace Dodi, you will be missed but never forgotten! 💐 prayers towards your family and friends ❤️
Good job, she is adorable!
Does this appt for had plastic dolls?
No, what I thought was oil based paint was actually acrylic. I had to search for oil paint for the doll since she's composition where the paint absorbs differently. You can use acrylics on the hard plastics. Check out Dollastic's channel, she does fabulous acrylic work. If you just want to brush paint, she has specialty "face up"work that shows other special materials that would be helpful to you.
The "dirty" doll yes was a experiment in producing dolls that were lighter and more importantly unbreakable making them safer for children. However the doll is made from a mixture of latex vinyl and stuffed with foam. The discoloration is due to the materials age, the doll was also exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time while the back of the doll was not. So that doll was probably a mixture of dirt and smoke, but if that was the case the hard plastic head would have been a similar colour. The only reason that doll is still soft and bendy without cracking is because the child who owned it probably bathed the doll on a daily basis.
Agreed. Around that time "baby oil" was a household item. While it does preserve the latex, it does little to restoring the color of the doll. I have found that Goo Gone is a much better product to use, given that it also conditions the latex but actually lightens the latex to it's original color. The reason I addressed this is that people were using Magic Eraser to "restore" these dolls. What Magic Eraser does is micro plane the latex, thereby actually damaging the doll. Try a small bottle, it works wonders on these dolls.
Beautiful dolls.my mom hung the dolls with the big flarey dresses on the wall.we called them Dresser dolls. Fun!💗
She is very sweet💗
I love her.is like one my Grampa had on his sofa where he rented a suite from a widow lady. I loved to clink her heels! And the baby doll is spuer cute!
Super cute!💗
Hi Dodi, many thanks for the quick reply, so sorry to hear your'e battling with Cancer at the moment ,you just focus on yourself at the moment that's the most important thing, sending you healing and Prayers , I will keep you in my thoughts when praying, may God grant you a complete recovery xxx
I didn’t realize that the Tupperware thing my mom has was a salad spinner lol, maybe I should use it after asking her if she says yes, but that is creative I never thought of that
😎 Yeah, amazing what you find that your mom has stashed.
I like your voice i think ours soothing
Would using a peroxide wipe and maybe baking soda cut thru? The soft abrasion of the baking soda? Just theorizing.
Hey what kind of doll is that? I'm pretty sure I have the same one.
These are a collection of 30s babies that are not marked. The best you can do is to look very carefully at the curl pattern and try to figure it out. I suspect that it's a Uneeda doll, but nothing is confirmed. They're the equivalent of the dress me dolls of the 50s.
Do you always have to take off all the old paint from a doll when it starts to flake or lift off? For instance, if the head is really bad but the limbs just have some crazing on them but no paint lifting off, can you just fill in the crazing and repaint?
If you are just repairing one doll, the "shove acrylic paint into the crazing" works well. BUT if you are actually repairing and restoring a composition doll, it is best to take the acrylic off. There is such a difference in the finish of an oil based paint versus acrylic. My point is that I like to keep as close to the original materials as possible...and acrylics weren't patented until 1951.
I had a big can color matched!!
God bless her. She is in my prayers.
Boy that went on nice! I had a lung transplant so I use an air brush and acrylic paint. I also mix my own paint. I kind of like the lighter color too.
Wow Beautiful 💝💝💝💝💝💝💝

I know it's been a long time since you had a video up I'm trying to find out what happened to Tammy her Channel says no videos I was just worried about her she's the wonderful person
Dodie please tell tell tammy that i miss her and hope she will come back soon. Saludes de Costa Rica. ☺️🇨🇷
Love bed doll
Her spine is broken
Take this girl to a hospital
😔
Do you know where Tammy is? I just looked at her channel and there was no content
Tammy is taking some time off. She's fine, just making plans and deciding how she wants to put new content on. You know how many changes she's been through. She'll be back directly.
@@DodiTov Thanks. I knew she's mentioned changes and things. It took me by surprise when I saw it was just all gone.
Did you air brush the body color on? What did you use to attach the grunt and, back together? I think I have this same baby doll and, Mine is all original including its eyes. When I got it he was a little stinky and, even after airing him out he still had a smell. I closed him up in a ziplock bag with ciliagel packets and, after a couple of weeks no more smell.
I glued her back together with wood glue. You need to find "hide glue", it's the original wood glue. And I simply used a paint brush, no air gun. I have several camel hair brushes, it works well.
Hello, so you know what has happened to Tammy’s videos?
Sandra, I don't know. When I talked to her yesterday, she seemed fine. Be patient, she hasn't deleted her channel, so she just privated them all. She's done this before a couple of times. It might be that someone criticized what she did on some video. I don't know. I'll find out when I talk to her next.
Dodi's Restoration and Repair, thank you. I’d like to be added to her private videos if I could. I love watching her videos and yours. I’ve learned so much!
@@sandrafitts3622 It doesn't work that way hon. When you set your videos to private, they can't be seen by anybody but by invitation. What she's done is make her videos so no one can see them. I can't even see them. I have no idea what's happened, but something has. I'll find out and get back to you.
Dodi Tov, thank you!
@@sandrafitts3622 I talked to her last night. She's just stepping back and finding her center again. This has been a tough year for her, with John dying and all. She's just getting her act together. Nothing's wrong, you know how you have to have a time out to breathe.
How do you finish off your painting? Do you varnish them?
Good question. I like shellac. Period correct and very shiny.
@@DodiTov thank you!
@@DodiTov do you make you gesso with the basic 1-1-1 ratio, but using oil paint, instead of acrylic?
@@Verrucca00 yes. The plaster will absorb the oil, what little of it there is, and go on smoothly.
@@DodiTov thank you! I’ve had trouble finding a good recipe, so I thought I’d ask the expert! *HUGS*
So nice to see you!
She turned out beautiful! I'm so excited to try working on some of these dolls! I have the very same carrier, that my daughter had for her babies 15+ years ago!
Have you ever restored a Toni doll? Mine has a badly glued wig, and the glue is very yellow. What would you recommend?
Yes I have. There's so many dolls from so many time frames, I just haven't gotten to them all. For your Toni, wring a wash cloth in water and plop it on her head. From the yellowing, it sounds like a water based glue and they will soften with water. The washcloth will deliver the dampness without damaging the wig. Check back in about 6 hours or so, and if it isn't softened enough, just repeat the process. Get back to me if this doesn't work because there are other things that can be done, but let's try the simple things first, right?
@@DodiTov thanks so much! I’ll try that.
I soaked her all day, and that glue didn’t budge. I’m so afraid to ruin her, so I’m at a loss.
@@Verrucca00 So we go to step 2. Get your hairdryer, put a nozzle on it, and aim it at the hairline. Put it on medium heat and just wait for the glue to melt. It will and if you leave it on medium heat, it won't harm the doll. Have a spoon handy to gently pry the wig off. Spoons won't scratch the plastic.
Thanks again! I’ll give that a try.
Thank you. My wife has been trying for years to find someone to repair two of her MA Dolls. Because of you, I was able to fix them in just a few minutes.
You are very welcome! MA dolls look so delicate, yet are so sturdy! Keep that latex tubing, it comes in hand fixing lawn mowers too.
Hi dodi would like to know the colors from the tube is oil paint??? Or acrylic?? Would like to know if there is any other type of oil paints that doesn’t have the strong odor????were I am living now I have to be inside, I don’t have a work area outside because. Of the rain down here in Florida!!! Love ❤️ your videos!!
Maria, all paint has odor. I work inside all the time, in fact, I seldom go outside. It's a case of what you get used to. In this video, I was using oil paints. Basic set from Walmart, primary colors. You'll get used to the smell after a while if you've never done oils. My 85 year old aunt is still painting in oils and it doesn't affect her health. Fun fact: "mineral oil" is just refined vaseline. Lindseed oil is flax seed oil. Don't be afraid of oil paints, they're harmless unless you make a meal out of them, and even then you'd have to eat massive amounts of them for it to affect you. Oil paints are "all natural" and not liquid plastics.
