I'm a bit confused. So you rub the doll down with acetone, see if it will remove acrylic paint, hopefully get down to the original, yes? Using the linseed oil should lower the raised chipping of what type of paint ... acrylic or oil, or original? It you think it's the original paint that has cracked into raised chips, why not just pick it off, sand it? Obviously, I'm a newbie at this, just trying to understand. Thanks so much for your time and expertise!

Sure! First, you have a misconception here. "Original" WAS oil paint. Before 1951, there were no acrylics, so if your doll still has original paint on it, and it's only cracked and partially lifting, the paint can be repaired. I have dolls that went through this treatment and their paint literally re-adhered to the composition. It can take time, but the patina of an old doll is hard to replicate! The color, the charm of a composition doll is it's patina. We do not have access to the original paint formulas, so the vintage color can be lost if you strip the doll.
I do agree, if the doll is hopelessly lifted, it's best to strip the doll. But if there is only minor lifting, I like to keep as much as possible of the original paint. In the doll above, I didn't test first, so I lost original paint. She will get a new paint job soon. And yes, a year after I did it, she's still waiting.

I appreciate your help SO much, Dodi! I have several dolls I'm trying to restore and I don't want them to look like NEW dolls ... I LOVE the old patina. I bought a wonderful pair of old baby legs (they look kind of like Kestner); have matched them on an old baby torso with arms, a really good fit and in great condition. But I want it to have a patina similar to the nice old legs. I'm going to try using a bit of burndt sienna thinned with mineral spirits as a glaze, then wiping it in/off. Any advice about that? I was an art major 50 years ago, have painted in oils, watercolors, done pottery, etc., so mixing colors isn't new to me. I'm 71 now and really getting into this "doll thing"! Thanks much!

@@JenniferMitchell77 Ok! In THIS case, thin your paint with the linseed oil! Not a first choice, as I explained in my other response, but it would be appropriate for your glazing. I'd let it sit for about 20 minutes, then wipe. Let dry overnight, then see if it's the color you need.

Oh, OK! I have linseed oil ... still LOVE the smell of it, and turpentine, from my days of oil painting. Thanks!

@@Verrucca00 yes. The plaster will absorb the oil, what little of it there is, and go on smoothly.

Dear Dodi, what on earth do you mean by "the stuffs"? I have looked at a lot of your videos, but I can't find it. I have 6 compos, all original, and I would like to make them look nice again, but it's a long haul. Think I bit off more than I can chew, but I would like to get what I Can do right.

LOL! Joan, I hate the whole "comment, like, and subscribe" thing with a passion. My answer is to "do all the stuffs". That's it, nothing more. As for your original dolls, FIRST THING...test them with acetone to see if they've been overpainted. I've been fooled before (see Horsman doll), so that's the first order of business. Then, if they haven't, apply the linseed oil over all the painted parts. Do not wipe it off, just oil them down and let them sit by themselves for a while. At least 24 hours, preferable about 3 days. See what happens!

Hello I checked my fridge its Energy efficient and doesn't put out much heat so I'm going to have a friend babysit the doll. His apartment is very warm and he's only got one dog. I won't have to worry about my cats getting curious.

Yeah, but heat rises you know. So even if its energy efficient (so's mine) it's warmer up there than at counter height!

I decided to go ahead and bring him to my friend's apartment. I put him under the vent near a window . Another plus I don't have to worry about my cats knocking him over or anything. My house is just too cold. His apartment is always too warm, the temp. was 79 at his place today. Its freezing outside today. Thank you for all your help.
