Make a Pope out of a Pirate? | Start of Medici Fortune | Italy | European History | Medici ep.1
#medici #florence #italy #royalhistory #europeanhistory #history #Giovannidemedici #milan #travelitaly #pope #avignon #pisa #schism #Cosimo #Lorenzo #baldassarecossa
How did the obscure Medici family become the most powerful family in Florence? How did they become so rich? And how did they eventually become one of the most powerful families in Europe that not even the royal houses can ignore?
The Medici family's success started with the Medici Bank gaining control over the papal treasury. But, in the process, the family faced near ruin by picking the wrong pope to support. How did this happen? In this video, we will see the story of how the Medici came to manage the papal treasury.

@@HistoryofArt-365 Actually I was being ironic. My father was a fan of the poem "The Battle of Blenheim". In the poem a peasant and his children found the bones of soldiers killed in the battle. The children keep asking what the battle was about. The father knows the names of Eugene and Marlborough, but has no idea about what they were fighting for, or what it meant All he can repeat is that "It was a famous victory." The poem is a commentary about how we idolize generals and battles, but in the end, the causes that in their day summoned mighty armies and killed thousands are as dead and forgotten as the skulls in a field.

Madame de Montespan was very ambitious, manipulative and selfish from what I've read about her and how she has been portrayed in a few movies and a mini series that I've seen. From what I've read, Louis was besotted with her and she managed to hold onto him for a number of years. Even though this was over 360 years ago, I felt bad for Queen Maria Theresa who had to endure the barbs and loathing from Montespan. I feel bad for any historical queen that had this happen, including Katherine of Aragon.

Thank you for this video. I have done some reading, mostly Wikipedia, on the French Royals along with watching "Versailles" which, of course, is a lot of fiction and the writer's twist on the stories. I do have to say that Alexander Vlahos who played Phillip knocked it out of the park. He played that role so deliciously. He was my favorite in the series. I did know what the Chevalier was up to when starting the secret club. From what I've read and seen, he did have a "black" heart. Phillip seemed to have had the "spare" behavior a lot like Harry does. I wouldn't think that it's easy in royal or aristocratic circles of not being the first born. That also shows in some of the marriages in the gilded age of American heiresses marrying into English nobility. Sometimes it was the first born son, sometimes it wasn't.

@@HistoryofArt-365 That would be very interesting to some of your viewers. The story that I'm most familiar with is Consuelo Vanderbilt. What the poor young woman had to endure, first from her mother, Alva Vanderbilt and then her first husband, Charles Spencer-Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough. These families are so complex in how they are related to each other, but Diana Spencer and Winston Churchill are from the same family. Just like the royal families of Europe!! It would be so helpful to have a huge family tree chart instead of trying to piece together the quilt that are the royals and the nobility!! Anyway, there is a lot out there about the American heiresses too. Some were really cruelly treated. Your channel came up on my YT feed and I will watch the rest of your videos. You can have "converted to *the Catholic Faith* or *converted to Catholicism* You cannot have "converted to catholic" because that's just an adjective and the sentence makes no sense. (You could have said "converted to become *a* Catholic" though )

Thanks for the comment. After some follow up research, we concluded the opening portrait is of Louis XIV, by Juste d'Egmont (Justus van Egmont). There are indeed portraits of Louis XV wearing similar coronation robes and in similar sitting pose. If you still think the portrait was of Louis XV, please let us know of the details. Thank you for watching!

Charles was far too inbred to breed. It was entirely his infertility.
