Fishing for Monster Striped Bass During the Migration. Here's How I Troll for Dozens of 40"+ Fish
This year I'm focusing soley on trolling shallow water billed lures for striped bass from a kayak. The water temps are very cold so I'm always in a drysuit this time of year. I use medium power fast/moderate action rods; 3500-4000 reel sizes; I mostly fish with 12 lbs braid but I do take one rod with 25lbs braid.

How I Using Weather and Water Conditions to Help Pattern Fish with a Fishability Score

Weather has a big effect on where fish will be and knowing where to start your trip can turn boring trips with no action into all day line tugging. All of this information is based solely on my own experiences and scientific literature. I also reveal my fishability score formula. I hope its useful to you and thanks...

Been wondering about slower trolling lures, thanks.
Hope it helps
Could I commission a few of these from you? You make and I pay you?
I appreciate the support but I don't sell stuff.
@@MDYakFishing I understand. I don't believe that I can find the hooks to make them, the link is broken. The ones I found have addition barbs/spikes on the jig. also that tool you used for the 210 denier, and which white maribou you used? I'm new to this stuff so I was hoping I could pay, but if I was to make it myself I dont know which is ideal, if you have links to use that would be great. thanks
Hey if you could recommend a few really good lures/anything to help with perch. Could you send me a link? Trying to bulk up on gear for when its a bit warmer for perch. I'm making a trip to my local tackle shop soon
Depends on what you are doing. Summer fishing I'd recommend 1/8oz beetle spin and winter jigging I'd recommend 1/2 oz kastmaster plain.
Somehow all the American snakehead videos miss out listing a crankbait which is heavily used in Asia for snakehead...check any of the malaysian giant snakehead videos and a lot of them will have a deep diving crank when fishing open water (note that this is only for sight casting to fish coming up to breathe on the surface) Maybe its also because we don't get chatterbaits that easy this side of the world
I appreciate the feedback. I don’t use crank baits just because of the treble hooks. I love using crank baits for other species though.
Hey there! I’m still watching all your videos and trying to learn as much as possible. I had one question though, how deep is the water you like to troll? Thanks for your content!
I appreciate you. The depth range I troll in is 1’-20’ I don’t like to troll deeper as I don’t enjoy using down riggers.
Not exactly sure why you are so avidly throwing them back it. Its almost universally expected for anglers to harvest snakehead catches, no limits, no license required. "Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) strongly discourages catch-and-release fishing for invasive species like snakehead"
They are very good to eat. I keep until my catch bag is full.
One thing you have to remember is that how deep a lure runs is from THE ROD TIP - it's a geometric function of the angle from the tip to the lure - the water has no impact. The lure has no idea where the water surface is. So a lure that runs 4' feet deep when your rod tip is 4 feet off the water, actually runs 8' below the rod tip. So keep in mind that you can vary the underwater depth by setting your rod holders to hold the rod tip higher or lower.
No, the most important aspects of billed lure’s depth of travel is the diameter of the line, the amount of line let out, and the speed of the lure in the water. This is just the physics of it.
@@MDYakFishing Yes, line plays a major role but there is a maximum depth that any lure is capable of running. It is the geometry of the bill and its size that determine the maximum depth a lure will run. Let me try it this way - take any lure you have and with say, 12lb line and 100 feet out, it’ll run a certain distance below the rod tip. If you raise the rod tip, it’ll come up higher in the water column. If you lower the rod tip, it’ll go lower in the water column. In other words, with all else equal, it will stay the same distance below the rod tip.
@@rodmakermagazine7117 Sometimes in a short message it’s hard to understand a point. We may have some wires crossed. If you are trolling a yo-zuri crystal minnow 6’ deep on 10 lbs braid with 2’ of 20lbs leader at 3 mph with 120’ of line out (from the rod tip) and the rod tip is 2’ above the water and you then move the rod tip up from 2’ to 6’ the change of depth the lure travels will be about 1’ different so the lure will be around 5’ deep. It’s not a 1:1 ratio. Hope that helps clear things up for you.
Incorrect. That would mean the geometry, the triangle, would suddenly change, just because you raise the rod tip, and that won’t happen. The lure has no way of knowing where the water surface is. It can only react to the angle of the line and the rod tip. We spent years at Berkeley working on this sort of thing in test tanks, and when you raise the rod tip, the entire triangle, by the rod, and the line back to the lure moves upward with it. For what you say to be true, the lure would have to know where the surface of the water is, which is absolutely impossible.
It's not physics - it's geometry. You have a fixed 90 degree triangle - dictated by the size and angle of the lure's bill. The line length is on the hypotenuse leg, the depth is the "A" leg and the "B" is the actual distance back (not line length out). Yes, the hypotenuse length changes as you let more line out and the "A" leg (depth) will lengthen accordingly but the entire triangle is anchored at the rod tip. If you move the rod tip up, the entire triangle moves upward by the same amount. If you move the rod tip down, the entire triangle moves down by the same amount. I run my rod tip about a foot off the water. If I have a lure that iis running say, 8 feet deep, and I'm in 6 feet of water and bumping bottom, I adjust my rod holder to put my rod tip two feet higher (3 feet above water surface) and now my lure is still 8 feet below the rod tip but only 5 feet below the water surface. The distance from rod tip height will not change - it's still 8 feet but the entire triangle has moved upward.
Curious to know which water are you fishing? Ease to get to?
I fish the Chesapeake Bay. I don’t get more detailed than that on social media. The technique has worked the same up and down the coast.
@@MDYakFishing Thank you very much!

I appreciate you!
Are you still fishing?
My wife just gave birth so my fishing is taking a hit here in the short term.
@MDYakFishing , I understand, congratulations!
How fast are you pulling the 3D Crystal Minnows?
My speed is from 2.8 to 4mph depending on conditions
@@MDYakFishing Thre Yo-Zuris seem to like the 2-3 MPH speed. Most bass type crankbaits only work up through about 1.5 to 2, and then start running on their side.
Two at a time, and big ones at that. Must be a curse.
lol. yeah. you can’t reel in 2 40’s. They always tangle and break off. At least that’s my experience.

September 9 10 11, just got back from fishing the mecca of snakehead fishing locations, the Blackwater refuge in Dorchester Md. Travelled over 250 miles to get there, spend big bucks on this trip. Fished hard for three days, trying every lure you recommended. Fished open water, lily pad covered water. Caught absolutely nothing! Damn!!!!
That’s rough. This time of year they start to move again so you can run into some tough days. If the water temps drop or rise 3-4 degrees over a few days it can slow the bite. They usually hit best with consistent weather. The days you were out the best tide movement was after dark which isn’t the best snakehead fishing. The water temps were also starting to dip which can turn them off. The lures can only do so much. Hope you get them next time.
We need to find out who first released this fish and put up a statue to that guy. Wonderful fish. They are here. You can't do a thing about it. They will always be here. There are billions of them Come into the future, make them game fish.
LOL. There are a couple problems with that though. Making them a “game fish” means devoting tax dollars to continually evaluate and regulate a species of fish. This is not a cheap undertaking and my taxes are high enough. Next, they are so fecund that they can produce 100,000 eggs a season and they also guard there young making them so prolific that “game fish” status will never be needed. None of the other countries that have this invasive fish have ever had to manage the population. Even with immense fishing pressure.
@@MDYakFishing Yakfishing man; The state of Virginia already has assigned John Odenkirk to evaluate and watch over just the snakehead population. So those thousands of dollars are already being spent (on one species). His salary comes from fish license sales, not general taxes. We have never managed our fish or game regulations based on what other countries do. Restaurants in DC have found out how good snakehead meat is, and are buying snakeheads from local fisherman. So much so, that the game commission has put a requirement to buy a license before you can sell them. Unfortunately, our game commissions have always been super slow to adapt to changes, but we should be attempting to drag them out of the past and into the future. Snakeheads are here, they aren't going away, lets regulate them.
This kind of content will pay off in the long run. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I appreciate feedback

Where have you been Brother?
I’m still kicking. I’ve only been out a few times since this spring. My wife is due soon so a lot of my free time has been working on projects to get ready for that. I’ve gotten a few 30”+ snakeheads this past month. I’ve probably only caught 300 perch. So a pretty light summer.
@@MDYakFishing Good Deal and CONGRATULATIONS on the Upcoming Little One. My Daughter is expecting my 2nd Grandchild any Day now. @@mikejordan6036 Appreciate the info! Wish I could be getting out more to pick up a few reds. Best wishes!
I see you use both baitcasters and spinning rods in this video. Which would you generally recommend and at what power? Thanks.
I grew up fishing bait casters and I’m very accurate with them. They just are a victim to physics and you can easily get break-offs due to line cut in. It is much easier to cast light lures with a spinning reel in the wind than it is to use a bait caster. That said if I am using 1/2 oz lures I like using the bait caster with 40lbs braid and a 7’ medium heavy fast action rod. If the lure is lighter than that I use a spinning reel with 12lbs braid on a 7’ medium fast action rod.
@@MDYakFishing thank you
Concur with the info in this video. Smaller baits, low weight, spinning rods, color choices. Accurate assessment of advantages and drawbacks of various commercial lure types.

What’s your troll speed? Jim
I troll from 2.8-4.0 mph
I live in Edgewood pull over on 40 at big gun powder walk down the hill an they in there
Yeah, they are in every tributary of the chesapeake. The western shore started getting good numbers 4 years ago for the places i’ve been.
hey, Looking at most of your videos and that bridge in the background of some are you on the Patuxent River? I just moved near there recently and got into fishing. Any recommendations for a beginner looking at getting a fishing kayak?
I fish up and down the western and eastern shore of Md. If I've discovered anything it's that there are no secret spots. I mostly fish what is close to me just because it's convenient. I don't give out those spots because I want to keep what's close to me fishable. I made the mistake early on letting my fishing spots be known and they soon got so overcrowded that i can't fish them anymore and I have to travel much farther to launch. My recommendation for starting out is first to figure out kayaking and then incorporate fishing. Boats are the biggest danger to kayaks so keep your head on a swivel and never assume that they see you. I'd also keep your gear simple at first and your targets small. Panfish are a great starter. They keep you close to the shore and acclimate you to casting and landing fish from a kayak. Best wishes.
*Booyah is tough to* beat. I catch a lot of shoals, spotted and smallmouth bass on the Booyah mini spinnerbait in black and yellow.
I use more Booyah lures than any other brand for snakehead. They just work.
@MDYakFishing I'm really interested in trying to catch some northern snakehead. If you'd consider hosting a guided fishing trip, I'd be happy to drive up from NC. You can find my email in my channel details. Hope to hear from you soon.
I appreciate the offer but these days I'm more of a fish when I can instead of planning trips. Life likes to get in the way of my fishing. I'm sure you can relate. Hope you get on them.
Do you ever troll with spoons if so what kind and how do you rig them?
I don’t troll spoons very often. I haven’t found a need to as my catch rates are pretty good with my current techniques. I have trolled Kastmasters at the surface with no special rigging.
If u only had one lure for ur best chance to go out every day and try to catch a snakehead on open water would it be mepps/chatterbait?
Open water that a spinner bait/chatter sit would be high.
Do u use 6-12 pound braid?
I use 12lbs braid for spinning gear and 40lbs braid on bait casters due to line cut in.
Really appreciate people like you who are so knowledgeable, and willing to share that knowledge, so others can enjoy this wonderful hobby. Your channel is a gold mine of info and entertainment. I’m looking to buy 1 or 2 rod holders that fit into the track. What is your favorite? Looks like you may be using two different types in this video.

You don’t use a leader? You go straight braid to lure?
I use a 18” flouro 20lbs leader terminated to a tactical angler clip.
So you where trolling with a jerkbait? I never even thought about doing that.
Yeah. That is the yo-zuri 3d minnow. One of my favorites to troll for striped bas.

Nice work on the fish! What is your trolling motor setup? What type and size of battery are you using?
Thanks! I use a Ultralight 1103 AC with a 915Wh battery.
What speeds do you usually troll?
depends on water temp. i troll from 2.5-3.8 mph
What are your favorite kayak launches on the Bay?
Most of my fishing is from Solomons Boat Ramp and Fishing/Crabbing Pier and further south. I don’t fish the hot spots as they are too crowded for my liking. I have a radius of about 10 miles from each launch and spend hours just searching each trip. I pattern them as they move up the bay and I move with them. I say that just to say there is a lot of nothing on the road to land them if you fish like I do.
@@MDYakFishing Thank you. I like to avoid the crowds. You are at a different level when it comes to striped bass.
