Big Progress Taming Peach Throat Monitor Lizard! 😍 4K

Peach throat monitors (Varanus jobiensis) tend to be quite a nervous and easily spooked species, which can frequently mean they can bite if they are startled. This together with an off the charts food drive that usually has them diving at food (or the hands holding it!), means that the taming process needs to be with a healthy level of respect and caution. Best vid yet in my opinion
@@GodSlayer803 what are the reasons you think that?
@@MostlyMonitorMad because U showed so much of the monitor just moving about and minding its own business. As well as showing off the enclosure
@@GodSlayer803 quite a few of the first videos I put up on here are like that, with the peach throats exploring the new enclosure, if you want to check out more of the same kind.

@@amysreptileadventures6664 thank you :)
Always enjoy seeing a video of your peach throats ! I don’t think it liked the surprise shower though 🤣 I’ve tried the crawfish with mine a couple times and he definitely liked them ! Did you ever figure out what was up with the dark spot on the underside of the tail on the new one you got ? Mine has had a similar dark spot in the same place ever since I got him. It’s never went away ? Very strange ?
It was just shedding skin there. If yours is thicker as well as darker, it might be stuck shed. If you notice on the video he was twitching before the spray and how it made him twitch more... I have observed many times that when peaches are in food curiousity mode and they have a stimuli that makes them fearful or apprehensive, the conflict manifests in twitching... That was why his reaction to the water was so over the top 😂
CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE
Excuse me but I’ve seen in some of your past videos that you have or do keep black headed monitors what do you think is a good enclosure size?
@@manuorenstein4153 anything 40 cubic feet or above is a great size, a bit below can be good also. Minimum 8 square foot of floor space, ideally more.
Nice calm peaches
@@310ExoticReptiles yes... The one out is super chilled. The one in the viv is mostly, but not a fan of being picked up and will wriggle and jump down........ He also has an intense hatred/fear of the gloves I wear if I need to hold him for more than a couple of seconds, as I did today when switching them in to the vivs the other was in...... He bit the glove a couple of times 😂

@@codygervais995 Yes, very cool species :D
@@MostlyMonitorMad I will probably always want one but will never have the space. Can you think of good alternatives? Timor monitors? Something in the 2ft or less area.
@@codygervais995auffenbergi are really cool, but even captive bred ones can be very shy and hard to win round. Tristis are the small monitor most likely peach throats IMO... They have the same level of reactivity to movement, energy levels, etc, etc.
Peach throat?

@@leecranch4489 thanks mate... He'd been in transit at cool temps for about 4 hours, so that will have helped but yeah, he does seem pretty chilled.... Possibly a bit longer in the body than Percy, but head and body is much chunkier.
Wow ! No way man ! You got another one lol ! This is awesome ! I’m super jealous 🤣 I’d love to have another peach throat ! They are such an amazing monitor to work with…haha as you know ! I just love them ! He’s a big boy… clearly that one is a full grown adult ! He’s a handsome fella lol ! Question…. I noticed on the underside of his tail is a big dark spot…. Mine has that also… it’s been there since I got him when he was a baby. Idk what it is or how it got there ? 🤷🏼♀️🤔 I thought it would eventually go away as he got bigger… like after shedding a bunch of times….but nope ! Do you happen to know the story behind this weird marking on the underside of their tails?
@@amysreptileadventures6664 I'm not sure, I need to have a proper look at it.

Hi can I keep a peach throat monitor in a 8x3 x 3 tank
@@Hasu61727 people keep them in worse, but larger would be better
@@MostlyMonitorMad ok then what is the biggest lizard that will be fine In a 8x3x3 . Anything tegu monitor types . Since you’re an expert I want ur opinion .please don’t say ackie 😅
@@Hasu61727 find the species you really like, then find what the biggest vivarium you can offer is and assess whether that works... Picking a lizard based on size along is not a great idea, nor is trying to fit the biggest animal possible in to a vivarium. 8x3x3 is enough space for most lizards in a size range up to 90cm length, but some will find it a far better home than others
@@MostlyMonitorMad how about a female Argentine tegu ?
@@Hasu61727 I don't keep tegus, so outside of my direct experience... Some people do keep tegus in that size.... 8x4x4 seems to be the most commonly stated minimum size
He’s not the only one
@@tfrye1232 🤣
Wow! He's very food motivated! :) So cute!
How big is the vivarium ?
@@Hasu61727 280x100x200cm, stood on a 15cm high platform.
@@MostlyMonitorMad do u think a 180 x 120x 180 is fine ?
@@Hasu61727 if the space is used intelligently, it could be made to work.
@@MostlyMonitorMad ok would you recommend a quince , peach throat or mangrove considering I want a harsh and interactive lizard
@@Hasu61727 quince and peaches are more likely to get tame than mangroves. None of them are likely to be thrilled about being picked up, even when tame. also quince have potential to grow enormous.... I've personally seen on that was around 6.5 feet and very heavily built like a water monitor
Hi, what is your enclosure size for your adult peach throats, also can you house them outside in SoCal year around
@@Chef_Arhan no, they need rainforest levels humidity and So Cal is more like a desert, isn't it? It's 280x100x200cm.
@@MostlyMonitorMad thank you so much
Actually one more question, can I house it in a 6x2x3 ft enclosure
@@Chef_Arhan no worries
@@Chef_Arhan no, it's too small for permanent housing of adult animals.... Even a small female would be better in something bigger.
Hey nice catch lol ! I still think this is one of the most amazing enclosure buildsI I have ever seen ! I would love to have something like that for my peach throat !
@@amysreptileadventures6664 thank you. Not clear on the video, but she freaked out a bit and was running all over my back and half way down both legs... Did well to convince her not to go on the floor 😂
@@MostlyMonitorMad haha well good job on keeping her above the ground ! & aww man….i know those claws do not feel good on the legs ! lol I’ve got the scratches to know about that ! 🤦🏼♀️🤣 How’s Toad doing btw !
@@amysreptileadventures6664 yeah, even at her size she scratches me up! Just occured to me though, that of the three short videos I recorded from this session, the one you're commenting on isn't the one where she was running on my back - that posted to IG 🤦♂️😂 She's great thanks. I've been busy so not had time to be making many videos, or spending as much time interacting with her, but she's getting more confident as these were the first times she properly leapt out to me.
@@MostlyMonitorMad Yeah those claws are no joke ! & haha I was wondering if I maybe missed something…I know I saw the catch lol but definitely no running on the back or legs lol ! Glad to hear Toad 🐸🦎is doing great & gaining more confidence ! So Toad is the lucky one that’s in this magnificent enclosure….Wow, she’s a lucky gal ! She’s in lizard paradise ! 😃🤣🤙🏻 Did you ever do a video about this enclosure build ? Not that I could ever re-create something like that lol…. I’m just curious on how you constructed / built the whole thing !
@@amysreptileadventures6664 yeah, my male is in the other half, and other female is in a vivarium in a different room..... She's bigger than toad... It may be that I switch her and Toad round, pair her with my male and let them have the full space, then when Toad is big enough I can see if the three of them can cohabit peacefully.... Will probably be a month or two before I start with these plans though. There are some videos on here from Dec/January time... The side with the male has changed a fair bit since, and a few minor changes to the side with Toad, but that's as good as it gets until I record a new one.
Gorgeous, adventurous sole comes to mind!
Debating on getting a tristis i have space for a 5x2x3 (LxDxH) but not sure yet. Not sure its big enough. Iv had a couple of monitors species the years these doo look fun.
It's a bit on the small side... Could be made to work for a solo male, but if you are someone that likes to feel you're giving a generous amount of space rather than just enough, would definitely go bigger.
@@MostlyMonitorMad yeah not going to squeeze a lizard into something just for the sake of it. On a plus side iv found an add on preloved with tristis available by me so at least there's a breeder local to me for future.
@@nanoreefer1622 I think that is probably my advert that needs taking down, as won't be breeding for the foreseeable.... I'm not aware of anyone other adverts on Preloved, and have heard nothing in the grape vine about anyone else having eggs or hatchlings.
