Skateboarding in my 40's: Re-Learning Boardslides
Just got back into skating this month and I’m making more progress than I did as a teen Your channel is so chill and helpful dude!
Such a good clean video man. You’re such a natural at teaching and explaining things. How far did you have to drive for that park?
Thanks!! Really appreciate it! This park is about 45-50 minutes away. I really need to make more time to get here. It has a great variety of things, except a mini ramp-which is fine since I have one closer to home for those days.
Manuals are something I need to start work on now I can comfortably ollie up and onto the pads!
Add them into your runs here and there, or in between tricks. Kinda like hippie jumps, they’re such a solid foundational trick that gives us so many benefits.
Are you using the flex of the board. It seems to be an illusion. How is the skater jumping up off the board raising the board.
Good observation! The board’s flex might seem like it contributes to the ollie, but it’s the combination of popping the tail, jumping, and catching with the front foot. If you go to 4:13 in the video and change the "playback speed" (in the gear icon) to 0.25x, you can see the back foot pushes the tail down, causing the board to start to lift the nose, then the front foot catches or levels out the ollie. Same thing at 4:36-this is a good one to see, also at 0.25x playback speed. Hope seeing these two parts gives you a better visual of the pop.
Great vid Miguel and Happy New Year mate! The Ollie to manny looks great and I agree they do feel nice. I’m going to work on them after the couple I got on my last crusty sesh a couple weeks ago. You make light work of those rail slides too 🤯 What size deck do you ride mate and is it a pop shape? I can’t decide what width I prefer but I want to get a new set up 👊🏻
Happy New Year!!! Welcome to 2025!!! Rails are surprisingly still my favorite thing. All my friends were super good at flip tricks, and I had to make up for my shortcoming with rails and transition skating 😂. The deck I've been riding is 8.8 inches wide, 32.4 inches long, with a wheelbase of 14.5 inches. It has a unique shape to it and is a little broader than a popsicle but doesn’t have a narrow nose or tail like an egg. They are slightly squared-off yet rounded. It's a great board for transition skating, but it lacks a bit for street-type skating. The concave is medium, then steep towards the nose. With all that said, it’s a great board, but I’m going to start skating a popsicle board again soon. Having tried all kinds of shapes, I’m going to stick to a width of 8.5 (minimum) and no bigger than 8.8. I think that’s a good width area for transition skating and tricks while maintaining maneuverability. You can check the deck out on the Welcome Skateboards website. Any deck with the shape "Sphynx." They usually don’t put too many out, and the graphics are an acquired taste 😂. welcomeskateboards.com/search?q=Sphynx&options%5Bprefix%5D=last
Great advice. I really appreciate your methodical, practicality as far as slow and steady. It’s hard as a beginner who’s older to not try to make up for lost time, jump from one thing to the next, and try to push something too far, too fast. I recently made a small “new years resolution” list of things I would like to accomplish with skating; very practical, doable things that I have laid out I. Front of me so I’m not chasing tricks or jumping around too much. Love the channel; thanks for your time and efforts. 👍👍
When I first got back into this, I was chasing tricks left and right, and it just wasn't fun. I skipped a lot of things that I now see have an impact on many tricks and parts of skating. Going back through it all again at a slower pace and thinking it through a bit has made it so much more fun. The list is great! I made one with the goal of trying to get 20-25% of what's on it. It really helps to break away from being hyper-focused on one thing every session. Thanks for watching, and glad you're enjoying the vids 😎.
The 50-50s on the ledge were awesome. And a pretty nice way to slowly step up the difficulty. You have a decent length on flat for beginners, and then you can go longer and get higher and higher drops. Wish my local had something similar I have a hard time with stationary tricks. I can't ollie or manual as well stationary vs actually rolling
Love the ledge box/manny pad at this park! It goes from 4 inches to about 3 feet, allowing for that step-up. I'm right there with you-stationary tricks are difficult, and the same goes for trying things slower. I've always been used to the "just do it with speed" method, but I'm starting to realize it doesn't always work for me. The stationary and slow rolls have been helping me improve at catching my falls-my wrists and hips are pretty happy with that 😂.
It’s like you read my mind. I spent the last few minutes of my morning practicing ollies to fakie on my inclined driveway and axle stalls on the step up of our walkway.
All the little bits count 🙌. It may seem like I get a lot of park time, but I actually get twice as many short morning or afternoon practice sessions after all the dad and adulting stuff. It all counts, and any time on a board is time spent improving board feel. Even when its freezinggggggg
I do those stationary manuals all the time, I just think its fun to see how long I can hold it for so much fun!! Manuals I think are by far my favorite trick I really need to work on nose manuals, fakies feel fine but for some reason nose manuals just feel strange I'd much rather go backwards! LOL Also filled out your form brother, just keep doing what you're doing, you got an incredibly positive attitude and that goes a long way!
Try doing a switch manual, but don't think of it as a nose manual in your head, even though, in theory, it's very similar. Do them stationary here and there, then test out your regular nose manual. The fakie thing is too funny-I can ollie higher and do a few tricks fakie that I can't normally do. It's bizarre. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!!!!!
Great session. I'm going to start with more switch this year too.🤙🏼
Hell yeah man 🙌 It's not necessarily about doing new switch tricks, although that's an added bonus. It's more about giving us that board feel, confidence, and expanding our balance. It'll come in super handy on transition too! Thanks, bro!!!
Fill out the feedback form linked below and help shape what’s next for this channel. Your input means everything-plus, it only takes a minute! 👉 forms.gle/9p5BReT1XYJwejGSA Thanks for being part of this journey! Let’s keep progressing together. 🙌
Hell yeah! I've been experimenting myself aswell, i started doing switch tik taks, trying to hold manuals without moving both regular and switch, and doing hippy jumps but landing with different foot positions while moving.
🙌 All great things!!! Manuals are such a great foundational trick-so many benefits from this movement, stationary or rolling. I'm not quite at fully landing the hippie jumps in different positions; need to fall a couple more times 😂. Tik Taks are another great one too; I’ll have a vid later down the road on those. You're doing lots of good for your skating-keep it up!!!
What park is this?
This is Hive or Hive Skate Shop in New London CT
What an amazing little skate park. Fair play for first time slappy's, they've been doing my head in for a while
Slappies look sooooo simple when others do them 😂. Wish we had more slappy blocks out here. The park was pretty fun-still surprised it's the only indoor one in the state of CT!
Thanks for the shout out! Basics are so easy to overlook. Ive only recent got confident with the hippie jumps, and really need to try skating switch more
Anytime, Scott!!! I was so guilty of skimping on the basic stuff-always in a rush to just figure out all the other tricks for some odd reason. I'm sure getting back into some of them will have a positive impact. Switch has been fun, just another challenge that builds more board feel and confidence. It'll be a long, long, long time before I do anything outside of manuals or ollies switch.
I may take a step back myself from doing tricks and just focus on some basic stuff as well. See if I can gain some balance and confidence. Might be the next video for me
That’s what I’m talking about! Board feel and balance drills will build confidence and lead to more fun sessions in the long run. Can’t wait to see what you put together!
"Old Broken Skater"....NAh man, your still skating. Your not broken. I'm ten years younger than you and due to breaking all 5 of my metatarsals on my left foot (my push foot) will never be the same. Hence, I can't skate like I use to and no, I SUCK at switch riding
I couldn't come up with any other names, and there were like 1,000 Miguel's already on RUclips 😂 But for real, that sounds brutal, man. I looked this up (metatarsals), and it's pretty amazing you're still skating. I can't skate like I used to either-not in the sense of tricks, but my struggle is with range of motion and flexibility. The military destroyed my legs. I've had my ACL replaced in the right leg twice, along with medial tears and a few others. Then on my left leg, the ACL was replaced twice, along with lateral and medial tears, PCL and MCL tears, and a tibial fracture. The left leg (my push foot) just struggles with flexibility. I also think there’s an element of fear of injuring the leg again that holds me back. But I’m just happy to skate again and to get to the point where I’m at now. Hopefully, it inspires others to just skate and not worry so much about landing wild tricks or getting "good."
@OldBrokenSkater I can still skate but only for like a few minutes to max of an hour at a time due to my foot not healing right (because I didn't listen to my doctor about leaving the boot on) lol. Love seeing your progress though. And when it comes to your name, I just had to give you laugh with what I said haha
Thanks so much! Hoping for more progress this year. It’s awesome you’re still getting out there, even with the lingering pain-that’s solid dedication. Appreciate the support and the laugh about the name! Miguel's Skate Channel just sounds too meh 😂 Hope you have a great New Year!!
Front boardslide looking good dude, keep at it! 🤘👍🛹
Thanks!!! 🙌 Gotta figure out how to come out regular and not fakie all the time. That’ll be the next step for that trick.
Great boardslide variety mate, switch skating sounds interesting! Love a hippy jump over/under obstacles 👊🏻
Appreciate it, Simon! Switch skating is fun and frustrating, but it’s a good way to take a break between working on other moves. I think it’ll also help with more board confidence and open up more setups in transition skating.
Great video. Love the focus on fundamentals. Need to do more of this during the winter to improve my overall board control. Keep the tips coming!
🙌 Thanks!! I think we can all benefit from a little fundamentals-winter’s a great time to catch up on stuff like this.
Great tips man!! Skating switch is so damn hard good to help with balance and some transition tricks!! Also gotta learn some 180 hippie jumps on a bank would be a cool move!!
Thanks bro!! Now when you see me putting around like more of a looney bin you know what I'm doing 😂
I am totally going to do those hippie jumps I think I could really benefit from this, thanks for the pointers brother great video.
Thanks Wes! Go nice and easy to start the hippie jumps those things can get wild real quick. First few days I was definitely kissing some pavement doing stationary. Work in progress for me.
@ Thanks will do for sure!
I've been avoiding hippie jumps. I should hippie jump my rail since Im not sliding on it. Body varials are another one I've been shying away from. Good idea though I'll probably start back with stuff like that once I can get this sciatica under control.
Got some great stretches from “Chase Mountains” on here for that. Feels so good! Hurt my lower back and hip falling on the lip of a stair and couldn’t move for months, have had sciatica for over a decade. The stretches help remove my nerve pain and tightness in my hamstring.
@ thanks I'll look him up. Seeing a chiro and doing Mckenzie exercises currently.
I would start super easy like stationary with the hippie jumps unless you already got them.(Once your back at it) First one I did I went for a ride to the pavement 😂. Super easy looking trick I think, but not to be under estimated. Will be a few weeks before I get wild and jump my rail. Love body varials another super good one coming down the pipeline with shoulder and hip rotations...but the shuv it vid is coming out first lol, I know I'm a slacker. Also I second @TheTWhite suggestions for "Chase Mountains" for stretching as well as "Knees Over Toes Guy" for anything knee related lower body related. Been trying to fit pockets of both in when time allows.
@@OldBrokenSkater I second moving hippie jumps are harder than it looks. I can do them stationary, but tried it moving one day and almost ate it big time, haha. Def need to do more
That one trick that looks easy and fun, then bam throws you to the ground. I do have a blooper from this video, will probably purpose it somewhere 😂
Great tips bro! Looking forward to more videos like this!
Thanks man, appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it! Hoping to get more like this out soon!
I got the same shoes 😊
Love these shoes! Swap between these and affordable Nikes.....if theres even such a thing 😂
@ I’m also tryna kickflip out a bank for my last kickflip of the year 😹
Hell yea man!! 🙌 Plenty of time to get it!!! I found that it's a bit easier to do tricks out of the bank. The ones I've done on flat are terrible because I can't bring the knees/legs up high enough yet. So the banks helps for now until I can start seeing benefits from box jumps and step up exercises.
❤👍
🙌
🥰
awesome! ive always been scared of handrails haha
Thanks!! I was terrible at street skating growing up, I could only do rails 🤣 while my friends did alllllll the flip tricks.
Oh and I rock bones filmers wheels at the slippery spots, they're 80 durometer but prevent death pretty well
Thanks! Slappys are so hard-can't grasp the concept without lifting up the nose. Not enough curbs around to spend time on them either. I was super lucky my wheels held for the most part. Literally watched someone drop in, and with one slight weight shift-bam-straight to the ground. That’s when I was like, “Okay, I’m just doing a straight line back and forth.” 😂
Nice job slappying bro... I can't not lift my nose too. The dudes that do them are sick w it though
Dude, you absolutely rock! So much great stuff in this vid, love the boardslide to Fakie and getting into 50-50 BS, really !!! 🤯
Thanks, Simon! I was surprised to get the back 50-50-one of those moments where I let my mind wander off, and the next thing you know, I'm trying them out and landing one. Hope you have some downtime coming up and enjoy the holidays! 🌲
@ thanks mate, you too. Have a lovely Christmas holiday ✌🏻
Such a sick video mate, everyone was ripping.
Thank you!!! So much fun, great to kick back and enjoy a park with new friends!
That's a cool looking indoor park. Looks like you guys had a fun session dude! 🤘🛹👍
Thanks! The indoor park was fun-perfect for staying out of the weather. We definitely all had a fun session!
Cool skatepark also, looks kinda unique and weird 😅
Very spread out so hard to find the right flow here, but it does offer some unique obstacles.
Cold ❄️ skate session season here in the UK 🇬🇧 too 😮 stay warm and keep shredding dude 😎👍💜 merry Christmas/seasons greetings from across the pond 🔥🎁✨💯🇬🇧😎💜
Thank you Adele!!! Single digits this weekend with a bit of a heat wave later next week 40f (4c) 😂 Hope you have some great holidays and good skate sessions!
The more comfortable you get, start shifting your weight towards the ledge. Meaning have your hips closer to the ledge. Right now your weight is closer to your tail which is making it harder to lock in. Think frontside 180 and land with all your weight on the sliding foot.
Yes sir!!! Thats my biggest flaw I need to fix. Getting the hips over the ledge and sitting on the nose. Think it's a confidence thing I gotta work through. I can do these with no ollie / almost slappy with the hip and weight centered. Just the gotta commit, thanks for tips bro!
🤙🤙Fun session!
Absolutely!!!🙌
Second I saw that rainbow rail, I thought “I would totally love to try that. I’d bust my butt, but would like to try it” I’m used to skating in the street, so it always takes me 5 mins to get used to the slickness of my garage or skateparks
Such a fun little feature! I think this is the second one I’ve done. It looks really intimidating at first, but after a few attempts to figure out the lock-in, it’s not so bad. Each time, I’ve worried that the back wheel would catch towards the end, but in reality, that’s not really possible. I’m always overthinking these things! 😂 The slickness of the park took a bit of getting used to, but luckily, I had somewhat softer wheels, so it wasn’t as bad for me as it was for one of my friends on 99s. He really had to work for that extra grip!
Nice video! Nice to see some real life skating opposed to all the video parts and pros I watch. I’m just starting in my late 30s, so watching some regular guys at the park is inspiring. How do you like those Nano Rats? Are they the 97 or 93? I could tell you had some softer wheels the way you were gliding and from the quiet roll. I feel like it’s hard learning stuff at the park on regular 99a classic wheels because they are so quick. I think dropping the durometer a bit to a 97 or even the 93 dragons might help a little. I’m doing well, but learning stuff like rock to fakie is hard when the wheels shoot out down the quarter pipe.
Thanks! Appreciate it! I can’t relate to many of the new skate videos or sessions unless it’s a beginner or someone getting into skating and just working for their lines. Seeing that kind of skating makes it more real and inspiring, like you said. Love the Nano Rats-they’re 56mm 93s, and they’ve performed really well on everything from crusty streets to a super dusty indoor skatepark recently. They have a super smooth roll, especially at the concrete parks I frequent. The only other wheel that comes close is the Nano Cubics (the red circle ones)-can’t remember the duros off the top of my head. Love those wheels too! I’d try the Nano Rats out, though, if you’re on parks mostly. Keep an eye out-I sometimes do tips videos for things I see others wanting help with, and rock to fakie is on the list. But yeah, try Nano Rats toooo!!!
Great time.
Sure was!!! Hoping for some warm weather next week to get some outdoor park sessions in!
Love that place. Great work. Especially loved the rainbow grinds and those 180 Ollie’s off the bank. What wheels were you using in there?
Thanks! Super fun, just a bit dusty-could use a regular mopping. Luckily, I had Nano Rats 56mm 93a (I think 39 wide). They held up very, very well, even when caked in dust. One of the friends had to switch out the harder wheels he was skating because it was pretty slick.
@ That’s what I found too. My softer 93a Dragons worked better for me indoors on wood ramps whereas my 99a Spitfires were scary slippery. 👊
@@Steves_SkateXplosion yep sounds about right! 99s are like ice skates in a park😂
nice place to skate during cold weather
Absolutely especially when everything else is covered in snow. Still couldn't believe it was uncrowded for a weekend.
Nice session. Especially liked that late shuv from Spencer. 🤙🏼
Thanks bro! Spencer was killing it! Think at one point he was trying impossibles. Tried explaining late shuvs to me but my legs couldn't understand.
@ I need to roll shuvs first. Late shuvs might be a while for me. Looked like a good time though.
Spent an entire day doing shuvs. Hopefully, that vid might be up in a week or so when the holiday madness simmers. Super fun time-wish we had maybe one or two more indoor parks.
@ There are 0 indoor parks near me. Can't wait for that video..
