    The problem with them ever coming back is they've sort of taught all the luxury brands that if they grow their own e-commerce profile and sell it while telling the individual story of the brand they're trying to sell that they will do better than selling it through a company that no longer focuses on the experience that luxury truly is was a great idea in theory but the concept went the wrong way and it failed

    Hi Nick, thanks for the video, just wondering that if i got 100 units at the start of the January 2024, and i sold 50 unit during the January, my sell through rate would be 50%, and then in February i bought another 200 units for the stock, and i sold 60 units in February, would my sell through rate for the February calculate as 60/(50+200) or 60/(100+200) ?

    • @thenickmchenry
      @thenickmchenry 4 месяца назад

      I know this is not the clear answer you are probably looking for, but.. it depends. Is this an item you are going to carry for a long time and continue to reorder from? If so, I would do the month to date (February) sell through in isolation so 60/(50+200) because that will be a better gauge for when you are going to need to reorder. If you are going to only carry this as a seasonal item (for example do one more order and then not order anymore) I would measure sell through on the life to date sell through (in totality from the minute you received a single unit). That way you can gauge how it is has sold through in completion compared to when you have 100% of the delivery in. This accounts for the rush you normally get at the beginning when the first product arrives. Hope this helps!

    • @thenickmchenry
      @thenickmchenry 4 месяца назад

      Hey there - can you expand a little bit more on what you by "what does that make me?". I would say if you sell any product to a store for them to sell, you are a wholesaler to that store and should treat it strategically as if you want to sell a lot more through that store or other stores.

    It's far from the most expensive product Apple sold. Apple sold a gold watch for $17,000. The Macintosh Portable was $17,716 (adjusted for inflation). Mac Pro from 2019-now is also more expensive. Apple III from 1981 was $15,133 (adjusted for inflation). Pro Display XDR, up to $5,999, plus $999 if you wanted a stand. Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, $14,200 (adjusted for inflation).

    AirPower, Apple Maps (for a while), MobileMe, G4 Cube, Pippin, Newton, Ping, Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, eMate, Macintosh TV, FireWire... But the interesting part is not the VR, but AR. AR is being used by several companies. Even Google Glass lasted for 10 years, as it had good use cases. So the AR part of it is really interesting, unlike whatever Facebook is doing - creating a virtual world, which no one wants.

    I was the checking the formula on Chat gpt. It shows a different formula, its dividing the difference with the cost price and the one mentioned in your video is for profit margin. if you can clarify

    • @thenickmchenry
      @thenickmchenry 5 месяцев назад

      Hey thanks for your question. I’ve seen it done both ways and checked with several brands that also use both ways (I’m not surprised chat gpt uses the way I think you’re referencing). In my luxury background most stores use initial markup to basically equate to the initial margin of a single unit. So if an item is $100 with a cost of $40, then the IMU would be stated as 60%, which is also the initial margin (used be several department stores in the US). This is done to compare to the final margin of the item, which because it goes on sale will not be 60%. Other retailers would state it as you got from Chatgpt, which I am assuming is 150% markup taking the retail price - the cost and then dividing by the cost.

    Hello, I teach retail management at the university level and have also worked in retail. Interestingly - many retailers in fashion and hard goods these days actually do use the intuitive method of calculating retail markup... I am curious - do you know of any companies that are actually using this confusing method? Like you say in your video, most retailers actually use a concept of multiplying the cost by a multiplier (in your example you say 2.5x) - all retailers I have studied call this 2.5x the retail markup (or in this case it would be 150%)

    • @user-xd8wg1jr1x
      @user-xd8wg1jr1x 11 месяцев назад

      The "confusing" calculation you are describing is also referred to as the gross margin percentage of the product. It seems like a bad idea to have markup percentage be the same calculation as gross margin percentage

    • @thenickmchenry
      @thenickmchenry 10 месяцев назад

      @@user-xd8wg1jr1x Hi there - thanks so much for your comment. To make sure I had the right answer I wanted to make sure I went out to my retailer network. I came from the luxury goods industry where we used this calculation for IMU and although it is the same as the initial gross margin always used gross margin as the net number at the end of the season so accounting for sales as well. I spoke to some other retailers and there were some calculating in the standard percentage increase on the cost, which would be 150% (increase off of the cost as you mention here). I will keep doing some digging to understand what would dictate using one way or another.
