I am interested in nearly everything, but have an especial passion for classic Volkswagens. After 36 years of dreaming, I've finally obtained my dream car. Join me in my love affair with the 1964 VW 1500 (aka Type 3 Notchback)
Why is it still not running right? #dailydriver #notchback #aircooled
I got the engine, trans and subframe back in, and everything seems to be in order.
But, it's still not running quite right..
Or...
What changed?
Could it be something simple?

What to do when you're putting back together a rare car and you're not entirely certain how something should be? Reach out to your group of friends who also have the same rare car, that's what. @jeremydoc has recently acquired a terrific little project Notch, and he's got it underway. However, he had some question about how the rear seat back support is fastened. Hopefully this helps!
My first experience in a Split Window Bus #kombi #type2 #vwbus
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.День назад
The split window Type 2's are really the only ones I get very excited about. I get really hung up on the body style changes to cars that make them less appealing. With Type 2's, they replaced that beautiful V shaped nose with a rectangle, and they really lost something at that point. Getting to drive this bus was more meaningful than I think Gary even realized.
80+ days of downtime come to an end

Over eighty days earlier I pulled this engine.. and trans.. and subframe. I built a platform and put all three items back in at the same time. This was both a good idea and an exercise in frustration. I took this opportunity to replace all the subframe bushings and make a number of other improvements. 00:00 Intro / Time Lapse 09:45 Preparing to Install 16:02 Installation Begins 27:38 New Boots ...
Preparing the Engine and Trans to go back in the car

With the motor stripped down as far as needed, it was time to put it back together, replacing and adding seals and such. This also afforded me not only the replacement of the nosecone with a reverse switch version, but also replacing the failed gasket there.

With the engine, transaxle and subframe dropped, it's time to see where I'm leaking and get what I need to get it back on the road.
Engine running perfectly / What's next?
Просмотров 1162 месяца назад
After getting my carburetors back together and the car running wonderfully well, my son gave me my Subaru back, so I finally had the chance to do something I've been putting off for a while now. The engine has some oil leaks, and so does the transaxle. It doesn't amount to a lot, but I don't like allowing these things to fester.
Four steps you haven't seen when rebuilding your Solex carbs - part 4

While rebuilding my carbs, I had some places where I wanted clarification, but couldn't find the answers. So, I went where anybody would.. thesamba.com. A guy there referenced this great little book, so I picked up one myself. I came up with four things I have never seen or heard anybody talk about before, which I've peppered into this video. I hope you find value from this, as did I. 32 PDSIT-...

2024 Eureka Springs 32nd VW Car Show with parade

Thirty two years running, Eureka has hosted what must be one of the best VW shows for miles in every direction. Each year I see something I haven't seen before and learn something I didn't know before. While I missed seeing a few people I would have liked to see, I got to see some I haven't in years past. Not only is the show full of great cars and fun people, but the parade is a really fun way...

Some of you may recall that I took at trip to Moab a while back and stumbled across this amazing boneyard. I was far from alone in expressing my desire to own one or more of the projects he still had remaining on this land. Well, sadly "Tom Tom", or "TK" Arnold passed away some time ago and his museum is about to be scattered to the four winds. That second part is good news for some enthusiasts...

My Baby is Coughing and Sputtering - part 3 - carburetor assembly
Просмотров 1375 месяцев назад
It's time to put it all together again. However, first I wanted to be sure I would get good seals from the gaskets. I could have disassembled them, cleaned them and slapped them back together, but if you put in a bit of extra effort, the results will be worth the time spent.

I've wanted to rebuild these carb for some time now. Maybe that clouded my troubleshooting, but here I am tearing them down. The 32PDSIT is a relatively simple carb. The biggest problem is that both the base and the top have protrusions I don't feel comfortable trying to remove, which makes it far more difficult to restore flatness to the mating surfaces.

Why does this Notchback deserve the S badge?
Those linkages are always so dang finicky!
On my ‘72, many years back, I was never able to get them to stay put. I got REALLY good at synchronizing the carbs. Did it about once each week!
They make an extension piece for the end of the cable. Easier than messing with your linkage.
So simple I didn’t even consider it. I’ll have to look into that!
This duel carburetor stuff is way over my head. You the man.
It’s like anything, just more processes to learn. You’d do just fine, I have no doubt.
Thanks for sharing, it took 6.5 years to get our 61 kombi back on the road. Still a bunch of little things to do. We logged 2k plus miles so far
That’s fantastic. I’d love to see that!
Drill some holes for seat brackets and use self tapping 10 mm bolts.
That would certainly work. As usual, I’ll probably put way too much time into deliberating which way to go. 😂
Thank you for the close up on the 63 bug, I have a 62, same but it is in winter storage now....
Thanks for the input. It’s always good to hear what people want to see.
Why coast out like that ? oh, you must be married. When is the next show ?
8/22 - 24 2025. You nailed it. I am definitely married. 😂
Where I live you must have lap/sash seat belts so getting the bottom of the seat out is made more difficult. Nothing I can do but squash to side trim cards each time and because the battery is under there I have had to do it often. (70 model Notch)
Oh, very good point. I don’t ever have passengers in the back, and haven’t yet put seat belts there. That would certainly change things.
So basically a Fastback and Notchback use the same back seat, and the body structure behind it. And your seat back is probably a later 70 and up piece. Earlier ones use the single mounting tab that is on your body.
Very nice. Thanks for confirming that. I can work with that!
@ No problem. I’m glad to help however I can
Can't imagine this video didn't help Jeramy. It looks like he snagged a very nice Type 3. What kind of camera do you use to video with?
Yeah, he really scored! Most of my videos are done with my iPhone, but some (especially time lapse) is done with a GoPro. The shots of the rear seat where you see me in the shot are all GoPro.
My man!! This helped way way more than you think. ‘Preciate you digging into this for me. Not only did it help with my rear seat setup, but it also helped with where all the holes are for the clips that hold the panels above the arm rest! As you may know, EVERYTHING is covered with Kilmat on mine. I’ll def be taking screenshots haha. Thank you, brother
Fantastic! I had a feeling some of that other stuff might be helpful. Let me know anything else I can do to help.
@@vdubjunkiewill do man. I asked for a little bit of detail. You gave me a lottle bit of detail haha.
You know I’ll help whenever I can!
This is really informative! I just bought an armrest backseat for my notchback too and am yet to dive into it like such!
I’m glad it could be useful!
Cool bus! I think the color is "Turkis"? I just picked up one just like it, but its got a smaller rear window (maybe its a '61 or '62?, gotta look at the title). He was asking a hundred bucks for it, so hard to turn it up. Put an air filter on that bus, dude, save the motor! ✌️ 🚌
Dang! Hey, I’ll double your money back to you and take it off your hands for $200!! 😁
Thanks for sharing! Happy New Year !
Glad you enjoyed it. Happy New Year to you!
Glad gary got it's driving I've got to get my bus done wait on a 944 front caliper then should be ready for show season gary one of the most honest and great bros I've met since I moved here from Socal 4yrs ago I definitely love our vdub community here in the ozarks😊
I have no argument for you. I feel truly blessed to call him my friend.
Great video 😊 I drove my '67 bus for over twenty years. When I sold it my daughter cried - so I found and restored a '58 bus. Subscribed to your channel 👍
What a fantastic story. I’d love to be able to sit down with you and hear more!
Love that you captured my dad's voice and his story. This is special.
I can’t even tell you how much it means to me that you not only saw this, but to know that it is meaningful to you. It was my absolute pleasure. Gary is a terrific person and I am richer for knowing him.
Great video! Awesome bus! Are you able to provide more information on the rubber wheel used to remove the stickers? Thinking that may be a good tool to help remove the old glue from my firewall tar board I removed.
Thank you very much. I’ll reach out to Gary to see what we can figure out for you.
If you Google "rubber eraser wheel" several choices will come up. You can also likely find them at your local auto supply store. As you can see they chuck up in a drill. I can't speak to using them to remove old glue, but they work great on old decals and stuff like that.
@ perfect! Thank you for the reply! I just found them online. Greatly appreciated!
@@vdubjunkie Thanks so much!
@@LOWBIMMER323i so glad you were able to get something more from the video!
This was a great story to hear as I'm a Springfieldian! Its nice to Know that this beauty came from Steve at ROY ROGERS (our old VW parts place ). I'm sad he is gone now. I hope to see this beauty while cruising around in my 71 bay 7 passenger deluxe bus. or my 66 sea blue beetle! Thanks for the story!
I love hearing about your connection. Thanks for sharing that. I know he plans to drive this thing about, so perhaps you will encounter him!
what color is the 71 bus ? NIagara Blue ? Sierra Yellow ? Chianti Red ? Montana Red ?
Sierra yellow OG it’s gotta lotta primer on her in spots now but not RUST! Bumps an bruises yes yes but not rust😄
@@fromthebeginningofvankind28 I’d love to see that!
@@fromthebeginningofvankind28 thats the way to buy them. My NIagara Blue had the original paint, Santa Cruz to Portland to Chicago - Gary IN to my house...June of 71 and it's a joy to work on. The lady who sold it to me, had grandkids and they make little FEET in the faded paint from their skin oils or suntan lotion ?? I did not know about sierra yellow, but that's a neat color. I want a blue one since 1986.
That was cool! thanks for sharing another Vw enthusiast, Gary is really enjoying his Split bus. He's doing a great job putting it together and loving at the same time! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. There are so many great VW enthusiasts out there, and Gary is the genuine article.
There's nothing like driving a split window bus. Even a baywindow is a unique experience! If you're ever passing through OK and want to drive another let me know!
Oh, you better believe I’ll take you up on that!
id love to drive one some day
It really is a completely unique experience, yet with that familiar drivetrain. It’s hard to explain.
What an awesome Bus man! Certainly an honor to drive it
No surprise you would understand. Super great guy too, so the whole experience was a real pleasure.
Great video David! It was my pleasure to give you the experience of driving your first VW bus. Looking forward to seeing you around the shows in 2025 and beyond. Please keep posting your wonderfully entertaining and informative videos.
Very much looking forward to seeing you with your own entry in the shows this coming year!
I love seeing what that lot has in inventory. It’s the perfect combo of classic Ford trucks and VW’s.
Yeah, I really enjoy how we still have some regular car lots left.
Great video, great narration. I love your passion for the vw, I’m the same way, I’ve owned and worked on these since the 70s, I think vw owners are a different breed, I dream about them, I’m 69 and still loving it. Currently working on a 69 ghia, ghias are my choice! Keep up the great work my friend 😎
I truly appreciate you saying so, and you must be right about VW owners. You can see it in other people. They just don’t understand why we love them so much! Not sure if you know this, but I also have a ‘69 Ghia and I’d really love to do something great with it
As the owner of a 70 Notch (full auto) I approve of this message. Even though I'm in another hemisphere.
Our passion clearly transcends global boundaries! Nice to hear from a fellow Notchback owner!
@@vdubjunkie Just watched your Petroix video. Wish I had half a brain on electrics. I have an unknown brand points replacement in the distributor, a Petronix coil and now I'm waiting for a failure.
@ make sure you have a low ohm resistance between the distributor body and the negative battery post and your plug wires are fully seated into the cap and coil. I feel like these are the two most common points of failure.
nice job great contrast
Thanks. I’m really loving it too. I’ve also got two more of em getting close!
Your thorough work paid off! I like the grease on the boot end idea. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that.
Thanks man. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you it is a labor of love!
This is great, bro. You did a ton of work in the short amount of time you had. Good idea installing the entire assembly (engine/trans/subframe) all together at the same time instead of piece by piece. That crate you made helped I’m sure
Thanks man. You know that platform has a spot in my attic now!
Great content! Knowledge is king! You are just like me you want to get right to the core of what makes everything tick, Because we want to fix it ourselves, Because we know we can! People do not understand the difference in the word knowledge and wisdom! Showed wisdom in this video, and I like that! Good job, and great video! Keep them coming!
Wow, thanks for the very kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Keep an eye out. I’ve got more fun on the way!
Welding, hammering and dollying! Thats exciting!!
I had Jack and Arista as my childhood Cats
I completely agree. I’m really looking forward to reaching the point where I’m comfortable doing some body work!
Thermostats are contested like oil type but I am becoming a thermostat advocate. There are some really nice thermostats available now so having to find and trust a used one isn't necessary. With all the great work you did to restore the tin to its original shape and function for sealing in the air, not to mention all your carb work etc, get you a thermostat to make it all function proper. Just one guy's opinion.
I appreciate that input. I got myself into a hurry putting this back together, but I may be talking myself into a new build anyway. I may very well put a thermostat on that one. I’ll also be going a lot further with tin work and everything else, because it won’t cause the car to be offline!
Wow bro, you really have been putting in work! Take advantage while you can, right? Haha. When I did my rebuilds, I would buy my hardware in separate batches. I didn’t think to buy a pack of a hundred until now. I probably spent hundreds in hardware alone at this point. Ps, my cats name is Goober.
Yeah, I’ve been able to put in more time than usual lately, partially because of an upcoming event. Absolutely, take advantage while I can!
Another great video David. Love watching your progress.
Thanks, as always! Time is getting tight, but I’m staying on it!
Try using a higher ohm coil , you don’t have high compression so why have the lowest ohm coil to trade reliability for no benefit….any Mallory points or electronic or olunite would be better….even a prestolite is better but parts scarce
Thanks for the input. I was just matching my coil to the Pertronix Ignitor as they suggest. I’m quite happy with the way the old school points are working for now.
You had 2 separate issues…The primary cause for the burnt secondary coil wire was improper connection , this is a common error with these female style terminals, you must push the wire completely first and perhaps spread the wire end a bit for a tight connection then slide the boot down ,anyway the poor distributor ground which although is attached to the coil negative doesn’t ground the coil but only the module so definitely was flaking out tbe module but perhaps only exacerbated the coil which was already handicapped by loose wire connection
I ell, it’s hard to say for sure now if that wire may have been loose, but it would surprise me as I make it a habit to install the wires just as you describe. Anyway, I do appreciate the insight all the same.
I had to retire the one man motor lift a few years back. I'm not as young and dumb as I once was.
I hear ya. I feel like I could have, but the reality is my back is pretty bad. I also would not have lifted hunched over like that. I was just getting a feel for how heavy it was.
I do my best to keep up with your videos. As always another great one. I learn something on every one of them.
Not only do I appreciate the kind words, but it really makes a difference for me. I enjoy working on the car and I enjoy making videos, but I could get a lot more done if I didn’t make the videos. Knowing that people appreciate them is what keeps me doing them.
Great work doing tearing it down! It’s always good to inspect and do your own investigations. Also, when I saw you start to lift up that engine by yourself, I almost fell out of my seat yelling “YOUR BACK!!!” Wish I had an extra pair of helping hands from my son. The problem is, he’s a cat. Haha
From my youth, I’ve found how to do everything by myself.. including building a garage with 10’ 4 1/2” walls and attic trusses. I could have rigged up some mechanical advantage, but this was quicker and easier 😂
Im excited for when the body work starts
Me too. I’m not entirely certain how to approach it though. So many variables.. not the least of which is that I know it will be a long time before I’m ready to do a body off operation
Great information, I like that you use the old books rather than internet information
Thanks man. But, you know I use both. Generally the information doesn’t conflict one another. If it does, I’d need to decide which sounded more compelling
Running great! Time to take it apart! That sounds spot on. Congrats to your son. It's great to hear about the next generation excelling in tech.
Yeah, timing can be an odd thing. I’ve been waiting to address some oil leaks for a while now. Thanks too for the acknowledgement of my son. I’m really happy for him.
You know as I watch this video, it's not been that long ago you and your buddy traveled to the west coast to buy this VW. Then to top it off, you guys proceeded to drive it home to Arkansas! I know it's really been a fun journey for you. What memories you will always have from this experience. Can't buy that stuff with money.
It really does my heart good to know ow that somebody out there has followed my journey so closely and really seems to get how meaningful it all is. I truly appreciate you!
That's a great idle! The in depth, detailed carb tune paid off for sure.
It is so great. Thanks for watching!
As always another great informative video!
Thanks man. I really enjoyed this process and I’m hopeful it will be useful to others.
Hello, what chemical are you using to clean? What car is it out from? I have a 2019 VW tiguan, replaced the battery but still have issues turning over.
If memory serves, I was using acetone. Mostly it’s a fine dust in there. The starter is from a 1964 VW Type 3. If the starter is struggling, but your headlights are plenty strong, maybe your battery is good, but it could be worth checking the cold cranking amps on the battery. If that is good, I’d wonder if the starter wasn’t getting a strong connection to the battery. I would look for corrosion, or loose connections. If that all looked good, the starter could be going out.
I’ll keep an eye out! I’m here in central Arkansas and I’ll see what I can find!
I really appreciate that!
0:08 my mind instantly went to "for parts"
Honestly that’s what I’m thinking with most of the cars I find on there, but this one was in better condition than mine!
