DIY Spray Deck for inflatable kayaks or canoes
Follow me while I build and test my second spray deck for my inflatable kayak: A Sea Eagle Razorlite 473rl.
This could work for many other inflatable kayaks and even canoes.
Here is the list of items I bought to build this deck:
-Velcro tape : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057562QO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
DO NOT buy the adhesive type, I tried that first and it ended being a disaster
-Glue for velcro tape :
(For an inflatable made of PVC)

-Waterproof canvas fabric : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7PLEU8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (15ft)

      @@fartherout9887salut merci bah du coup je suis en France donc les lien que tu as mis pour le tissu ne fonctionne pas je peut pas me faire livrer mais je vais essayer de trouver un équivalent, ma question est comment tu as collé le velcro sur le kayak simplement avec la colle qui est déjà dessus ou une colle spécifique ?

    • @fartherout9887
      @fartherout9887 28 дней назад

      J'avais essayé avec du velcro autocollant au début, ça a été un énorme échec, au bout de un ou deux mois ça se décollait et ça foutait de la colle partout. J'ai acheté du velcro qui normalement se coud et je l'ai collé avec de la colle aquasure: gearaid.eu/products/aquasure-repair-adhesive. Il me semble avoir acheté un tube de 250ml. Elle se vend sur pas mal de site, amazon, atelier de la mer... Il est possible que d'autres colles PVC pour pneumatique marchent mais aucune certitude. Attention par contre la colle ne marche pas avec tous les types de velcro. Regarde la composition du velcro (nylon vs polyester) et si la colle fonctionne avec ce matériel Dans le doute, le mieux c'est de faire un test avant de tout coller, avec un petit morceau de velcro

Pour le tissu, j'ai acheté celui là en France: NOVELY Oxford Grand 600D Étanche 1 Lfm Polyester 600D Tissu Étanche Extérieur PVC par Mètre Extrêmement Indéchirable Robuste Couleur: 39 Rouge-Orange s08 amzn.eu/d/1G4V8HE

    Very nice! I’m looking to do the same thing. What are your thoughts on using D rings and grommets on the side of the vessel to tie down the spray deck? How is the Velcro holding up?

    • @fartherout9887
      @fartherout9887 2 месяца назад

      I considered using D rings as well. I think it's a great option, it's just a lot of Drings patches to glue if you want a good seal. And it might be tricky on the front and back section. The velcro is holding very well after more than 5 years of use. I have not noticed any part of the velcro coming off. But I had to do some testing before hand with a piece of velcro, a patch of PVC fabric similar to the kayak fabric and the glue I was intending to use. I found out that the Velcro tape I was using did not work with the glue. And had to get a different Velcro tape. I think one was polyester, the other was nylon. But I don't remember exactly. I hope this helps! Let me know if there is anything else you need to know during the project!

      Oui, je peux faire des progrès en termes de poids. Surtout au niveau du sac et de la tente. Mais j'aime aussi la sécurité d'une tente 4 saisons pour ce genre de conditions. Et le confort d'un sac non ultra light. Et j'aime bien manger chaud 😅. Mais il est sûr que pour ma prochaine longue sortie, je vais soit m'alléger soit réduire les distances quotidiennes. Bonnes rando et bon bivouac !

    Hi. Do you think my 393RL would handle the trip OK? It’s the single version of your kayak; 12’10”.

    • @fartherout9887
      @fartherout9887 5 месяцев назад

      Hi! I've never tried the 393rl, so it's hard to say. I think that without a deck, kayaking in the Keys is probably not a good idea as you would take a lot of water in because of waves. If you're able to make a deck, then it will depend on how many miles you are able to paddle per day, and in what sea state you can paddle. I find wind to be the worst element for inflatable kayaks. Best is to try paddling long distances in different conditions and see how you feel.

      Brilliant job. I've got a sevylor pointer K2 which comes with zip in spray decks that are great. I don't know why they don't commercially make universal ones like you've made. Just to keep spray and drips from the paddle out. But again good job and like the way you put tubing in for the opening to hold the spray deck.

    It seems there’s many options for free camping on the keys & islands on this route… did you do that? Did you find much opportunity to hammock camp? What bug repellent do you recommend & what gear did you find to be least useful?

    • @fartherout9887
      @fartherout9887 10 месяцев назад

      It was not easy to find places to stop/camp, at least on the Atlantic side of the Keys, as most of the shoreline is either Mangroves or private properties. We had to plan ahead and find spots on Google earth and made sure it would be allowed/tolerated to camp there, and when not possible, we booked a hotel room or a campsite. Hammock camping would have been tricky, there aren't so many big trees, and rarely close together, we're glad we took the tent. I think we used some deet-based product as repellent, it did good against mosquitos but not that good against no-see-ums. But it really helped though. I read somewhere that deet based product are damaging gear it comes in contact with, so that might be something to be careful about. Something we brought that we ended up not using was our sleeping bags, it was really hot at night and sleeping bags were useless.our sleeping bag liners were plenty enough for a May paddling trip in the Keys.

    Well done and some great scenery. I don't think I could take a 20kg pack like that! I think you should get rid of that tent, TNF are over rated, and it looks heavy. Get a walking pole tent, they're strong and light weight. A lighter pack makes it easier and more enjoyable, or you could've done it in 5 days ;)

    • @fartherout9887
      @fartherout9887 Год назад

      Thanks! Yes, the tent and my pack are definitely on the heavy side. The tent is 2.8kg and the pack 2.3kg, I could save around 2 or 3kg with more adapted gear for solo hiking. that would help a lot.it's nice to carry a 4 season tent though (when it does not leak 🥴) as you can sleep in rough conditions. I also took too much food. I finished the hike with 600g of food.. A few things to improve but it was still amazing!

      @@fartherout9887 I couldn't go up the west coast of Florida due to the enormous red tide, so I couldn't make Houston. I am a safety kayaker for Adventures Unlimited and the Trinity River Coalition.The journey renewed my faith in humanity with all the wonderful people I met on the trip. I had an orca breach the water 3 feet off my bow in Maine and to kayak wit 70 manatees on the Atlantic Coast of Florida was mind blowing.

    Hi ! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and beautiful photoshots, that's amazing ! I'm preparing an expedition in Laponia for that winter and i'm still seeking for a high performance sleep bag for very negative temperatures (-30°C). What was yours please ? Thanks in advance for your reply.

      Hello! Thanks for your comment! Our sleeping bags are "Bloody Mary" from Valandré. It is rated at -5°C confort. www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/bloody-mary.html The manufacturer says the confort limit is more around -15°C. I think it was between -10 and -15 in the tent that night, and we had a fleece sleeping bag liner, and all our warm clothes. I think a 4 seasons tent really help with keeping heat inside. We slept pretty well. For -30°C, you can look at the other models from Valandré, it's a well known French brand for sleeping bags: www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/odin-neo.html www.valandre.com/sleeping-bags/thor-neo.html When we were looking to buy our sleeping bags, I looked at Thermarest, Mountain Hardware, Feathered Friends, and Western Mountaineering. But we are really happy with our Valandré. I bought them thinking we would never sleep below -15. But our first night using them proved me wrong. Also, the sleeping bag felt a little damp in the morning, as the water leaving your body condensate inside the sleeping bag as the temperature is so cold outside. They had lost little bit of loft. I think that a second night in such temperature would have not been so pleasant. I searched online for solutions, one of them is to sleep in a vapor barrier liner (pretty much a big trash bag that does not let the humidity out), you are wet but your sleeping bag is not. That sounds pretty miserable. Or to sleep with a combination of sleeping bag and synthetic quilt so that the water condensate in the quilt. Just something to consider, as it will happen if you sleep several nights in a row. Hope this help ! Laponia sounds amazing ! I hope you'll have the best time and that you will stay warm !

    Hi there, this is a wonderfull hiking tour, but it’s not the complete crossing of the calanques. You should have continued passing Morgiou, Sormiou, Podestat, Marseilleveyre to arrive in Callelongue or even Samena or Les Goudes. Anyway, thx for sharing👍👍☀️

      Yes, that's correct! We did a first episode where we hiked from Samena to Luminy 🙂, you can find it on our channel. This fall, we will try to film a third episode from la Ciotat to cassis. After that, we plan to do some more episodes kayaking: Les Goudes - cassis La Ciotat - Cassis Le tour de Frioul And maybe le tour de Riou
